The old homey BrainSlice caught a flight last Friday to the 206 to kick it with Catch and I for a few days...and what a few days it turned out to be. The whiskey and beer were flowin like they were a fresh mountain spring and it took me a few days to recuperate. It started the moment he got off the plane and continued all weekend. Caught a few shows and missed a couple performances because we drank too damn much. Check out the rundown:

My buddy Troye has been tellin me about his guy Larue for a while now, and even sent through a few tracks off his new mixtape "Larue In The Streets". I never did get a chance to listen, so BrainSlice, Troye, and I decided to hit up his show at the Vera Project. I can't say that I was surprised that I liked what I heard, Troye and I have a lot of the same taste when it comes to hip hop, and this was no different. What did surprise me was how well Larue performed on stage. I think this was one of his first, if not his first, "headliner" show. Up until Larue took the stage, I wasn't real impressed by what I had heard from the other acts. For what he may lack in experience on stage he more than made up for with energy. I thought he did a good show. We met up with them after the show and had some drinks and shot some pool. Larue was an all around good dude. Sunday was a LOOOOONG day for sure. We started tailgating the Seahawks game at about 10am. After a few drinks there we got BrainSlice to his first NFL game, a Seahawks win (hey it may have been Detroit but at least we didn't lose...*cough Redskins choke*). We were due to head over to Neumos around 8 to the Swollen Members show featuring Big B, Bliss N Eso, and Common Market. Needless to say the drinks had taken their toll, and we passed out for a few hours after the game and missed all but Swollen Members.

If you remember, BrainSlice recently did an interview with MadChild of Swollen Members and struck up a bit of a friendship. After the show we met up with MadChild and got to kick it with the guys and chop it up a bit. All of them were totally chill, laid back guys. This is when we met Bliss N Eso. Bliss, Eso, and DJ Izm comprise the Australian group Bliss N Eso. The dudes gladly gave us a copy of their "Flying Colours Mixtape" and after a couple listens, I am pissed that we missed their performance. These dudes spit straight fire. When they handed us the mixtape is came with a simple request, "burn that shit, copy it, hand it out, give it away, just get it out there". So here it is...definitely worth the download. Bliss N Eso - Flying Colours Mixtape

This would be my first experience with Swollen Members, other than listening to their new album "Armed To The Teeth". BrainSlice, on the other hand, has been a fan since the beginning. It's good to go to a show unbiased about the music sometimes, you never know what to expect. I gotta say, I was impressed...Prevail, MadChild, Tre Nyce, and Rob the Viking put on a great show. MadChild was even fighting off a bit of the flu, but still tromped around the stage like a madman. To this day, Prevail is the only dude I have seen spit his verse while stage diving and crowd surfing. Tre Nyce is the "new" guy. Having not heard much SM prior to Tre, I thought dude was dope...singing hooks, delivery, stage presence, everything. Tre, you were right my dude, it was cold as shit out there!!! If you don't have "Armed To The Teeth" go cop it now! I'm gonna work on gettin some of that older Swollen Members. Below is a video for Bollywood Chick off the new album, and SM playing to the Seattle crowd with their take on Nirvana.

All in all, a great weekend. Got to hang with BrainSlice (can't believe it's been like 10 years), a Seahawks win, and some great hip hop. Peace!

AYCE Presents: A Conversation With Mad Child

“Tens, twenties, forties, eighties, Mad Child poppin’ more pills than Slim Shady”

“Mad Child should be dead” – that is a phrase I have heard repeated quite often lately. I was happy to hear that he was off the pills, and I was eagerly anticipating the new Swollen Members album. What was supposed to be a twenty minute phone interview with Mad Child turned into an eye-opening 60 minute conversation. When we were done I had a renewed respect for Mad Child as an MC, and as a person. He is a survivor, a Hip Hop soldier that almost became a casualty of war. He lost a lot in the last 3 years, and now he is more determined than ever to make music, and repair the damage his drug habit caused.

This may be a long-ass post, but whether you are an old or new fan, or even if you forgot about Swollen Members altogether, please read! Also if you missed it, check my last post about ARMED TO THE TEETH – Out Now!

Disclaimer: I am not a professional. My interview skills suck. So, I’m gonna strip this down and paraphrase a lot. I just want Mad Child to be heard. Check it:

Mad Child: It's a different time. Imagine me, going through what I just went through, not even paying attention to the world for the last 3 years; and then coming back and being reintroduced to the whole music industry, not just as a business, but just what people are listening to. It was quite a culture shock. You know, that 3 year gap of me not really paying attention to music, or to the outside world, and then coming back, I was like: "Holy shit man, things have changed so drastically."

BrainSlice: I respect you for comin' back hard and being strong with the pills and all. It's a hard road, I can't imagine.

MC: It's fucked up, I'll tell you that much, it's fuckin' crazy. Thanks for the support man, that kind of stuff really helps me make it through the next day. That shit was gnarly, if you have friends that have been through it, then you know exactly what I'm saying, it consumes your world, you know?

BS: We need you man. Your lyrics just kill me.

MC: I'm honored man.

BS: We gotta keep you around, we gotta keep you here.

MC: (laughs) Keep me around, yeah, okay! Cool. Well, we've been doing a lot of recording the last 5 weeks, when I got back from L.A., we opened Battle Axe back up with Suburban Noize. I came back and everyone was like, well what are we gonna do before we go on tour? I said, let's just go to my house and record, let's make every day count for 3 now that I'm finally off these pills. I wasted 3 years of everybody's life, so, let's try to make every day count for 3. We went back and we recorded tons of music, Coming back after 3 years of doing damage to yourself financially, physically, and spiritually…. It's NOT like you just come back to life and then everything is good. I don't know if you've watched the Vlog thing on YouTube?

BS: Yeah I did. I watched all that shit.

MC: I lost a grip of money. It's all my own fault, you know what I mean? So, it's up to me to make up for the mistakes that I've made, and what I've done to myself. My whole point is, we've really gotta be productive now. Even when we go on the bus for this tour, we're bringing the music equipment. The whole goal is that, once you get off stage, after we say "Hi" to the fans and stuff, we can get back on the bus and keep writing and making music.

BS: I like that man, that's organic, that's where the art comes from.

MC: So, If the internet is where things are now, people keep pumping stuff out; instead of sitting around and crying about it, let's just embrace the good things about it and make sure we keep feeding the fans. We gotta feed ourselves too, with a constant, creative process, and keep moving.

BS: Some of the lyrics on the new album really had me laughing; with your comments about dudes wearin' tight pants and stuff.

MC: Yeah, I'm not really a fan of that. Coming back to that whole shit and seeing what these kids are doin' right now and you're like, "Wooow." I understand that trends happen. We're both getting up there, but we're still young at heart, right? If music is your life, which it's both of our lives, yours and mine, that keeps you young at heart. It keeps you in touch with what's going on in the streets. You find trends and roll with 'em, because that's what you did when you were younger, but, I just can't embrace what's going on today with a lot of kids.

BS: I'm in that exact place, I mean, I look at these dudes and I think, "Did you steal those fucking pants from your younger sister?"

MC: Exactly! I just can't get with it, no matter how hard I try to be open minded. I think that those kids are gonna look at pictures of themselves in 2 years and say "Oh my god, what was I thinking?" I'm not getting caught up in that. I'd just rather keep it classic. You know what I mean?

BS: True. They WILL do that, because we probably did the same thing. I look at pictures of me when I was in high school, and I say: "Who the fuck did you think you were?"

MC: Yeah (laughs) exactly! (more laughter). We've learned that lesson. They're learning it for the first time. The guys in high school and college, taking pictures, they're gonna look back and go "What the fuck was I thinking?"

Throughout the interview, we talked about a wide (and arbitrary) range of artists that he enjoys, and have influenced and inspired him. He mentions Ghostface, the Beastie Boys (Ad Roc in particular), Led Zeppelin, Son Doobie, Nirvana, Souls of Mischief, AC/DC, Del, House of Pain, The Rolling Stones, La Coka Nostra, and a lot of others. Then Mad Child throws me a curve ball: Gucci Mane!?

BS: So you feel like he's different, he's not part of this whole fuckin' radio mess we got goin' on right now? I mean, I just saw his name and I was like, “Don't care."

MC: Right

BS: But I haven't listened to him, so I'm gonna take your word on this and check it out.

MC: This is where we might differ in opinion, because as much as La Coka Nostra is one of my favorite groups, and Beastie Boys, same thing, I had their records on my wall. They're one of my favorite groups of all time. They were more than a group to me, it was more of a lifestyle. The Beastie Boys were epic to me. Ad Roc was one of my favorite all time rappers, hands down. They consumed my world. The Beastie Boys were so dope.

BS: When I was a kid, I could not stop listening, you get in my truck and that tape is rolling: if you don't like it, get the fuck out.

MC: Hell Yeah, I had a fucking '63 Mercury back then. Driving around listenin' to 'em, and I didn't even have my license; I was 16 years old. (laughing) I fucking loved that shit.

But, my point is, now it's 2009. I can't get stuck in a time capsule, and that's what I try to explain to some people that are like: "Why aren't you just doing that same Bad Dreams sound that we love?" The true loyal Swollen fans want us to keep doin' that Dungeon and Dragons sort of stuff.

BS: Right. That's one of the things I wanted to ask you about, because I always go back to Balance as a favorite.

MC: I know what you're saying. The thing is, look, it's not 1999 anymore, it's 2009, and I have to make music for myself before I make music for anybody else, because I have tried making music for the wrong reason before.

Heavy was the one album in our disc set that we weren’t 100% happy with. We feel like we rushed that album, we were making it to keep the business machine going. We made that album for the wrong reason, it was a weird time. Looking back, one day I may re-release Heavy, with some of the tracks still on it, but with some new songs; and make it the album it was supposed to be. It still bugs me to this day.

BS: Do it! Strip it down. The lyrics on there are amazing.

MC: Thanks bro, I appreciate it. What I realized from that is, "Hey, we gotta make music for ourselves first, I gotta make myself happy." And yes, I do want to make sure that there are a certain amount of songs on Armed to the Teeth, like Kyla, or Funeral March (with Saafir), songs that have the same feel as that classic Swollen Members sound. It's where we came from, and I always want to keep that as part of my artistry.

I also want to be an artist that's progressive, and keep moving forward. The difference is this: even when I was a so called, "backpack rapper" when the backpack movement was crackin' off, I was living a different lifestyle than the rest of the guys in my group, and I always have been, since high school. I talked to them before we started recording this. I said, "Listen, I don't wanna feel confined as an artist. I know it's gonna throw some people for a loop, but I want to be able to talk about things that are going on in my life, things that are happening around me, and I don't wanna feel confined by my audience, or my group." I don't want to feel like I'm in a box and I can't go to the left or the right of the path because I'm expected to only address certain topics. So they agreed that I should be able to grow, and talk about things that I want to. It's more than just a gradual jump, but I wanted to make sure that there was a balance of the classic Swollen stuff, and also new things.

In addition to other artists we've talked about, I also like Lloyd Banks. I love to listen to that fuckin' guy. The Clipse are fuckin' dope. I was listenin' to this thing they did on Sirius a couple weeks ago, driving around and they were just doin' freestyle to promote the record over a bunch of people's beats. Those guys are sick. There are other rappers out there that are killing it, like Glasses Malone, we got to do a song with him for the new album called Real P.I. It was the last song on the album. That guy is fuckin' dope. He needs to blow up.

It's just fun to not always do the same mathematical rhyme patterns every time. I wanted to try new stuff and say, "Hey, this is somethin' that's poppin' right now" I can adapt this style into what Mad Child is doing and I can show and prove to MYSELF first and foremost that I can continue to be a progressive MC. I can stay on the front lines of what's going on. That was my thought process.

BS: I gotcha man. I gotta be honest, a couple tracks on Armed To the Teeth threw me. I think that comes from a misguided loyalty to your group. I said, "What the fuck is this? This doesn't sound like Swollen Members."

MC: Right.

BS: I understand what you're saying though. There are tracks that I love out of the gate, and there are some that I learn to love.

MC: I'm more proud of this album than anything we've done, even though Bad Dreams is probably my favorite album that we've done, and I was really proud that we made Black Magic.

BS: Oh yeah, I loved Black Magic.

MC: Yeah for sure. So I don't think there's anything wrong with doing stuff in topical categories. When shit is the truth, and it's all around me. I don't think there's anything wrong with me opening that part of my life up to my listeners. I wanna make sure that we never over-do it, and I know it came on a little strong! I was enjoying driving around and listening to music. but I've been listening to our album for months now and I haven't gotten sick of it yet. That's how I know it's something that I'm proud of. I want you to listen to it more if you have time.

BS: Hell yeah I got time man. I'll do it.

MC: That's what I want, I want honest feedback.

BS: I don't know shit about Hip Hop. I'm a fan. I don't know about the business, I don't know about the production, I don't know shit. All I know is whether I like or do not like what I hear.

MC: Exactly, and that's all I'm asking for. It's important for us to reflect on the stuff we've done, which helps us to move forward as well.

I'm just gonna give you a heads up with this Battle Axe Warriors thing. We've got an album that is done. We're working on a bunch more songs. The Battle Axe Warriors stuff is gonna be pretty hard the whole way through. Beautiful Death Machine, and the next Swollen Members record we do, will also have a nice balance. I'll be able to satisfy my appetite for both types of music. That gives the fans a chance to decide: are they Battle Axe supporters all the way through? Or is Swollen Members more just their thing and they're not really hip on part of what I'm doing. That way, the fans will have a choice! It's just gonna' take me a little bit of time to build both things up, but I do want to give that to our supporters.

This is just a fraction of the conversation. I hope I did it justice. Big thanks to my crew at AYCE, my wife (she transcribed that whole shit for me! Doesn’t help that we sounded like we were speaking a foreign language!), and of course to Mad Child for taking an hour out of THE NIGHT BEFORE THE TOUR STARTED to talk to me.

That's like a heavyweight rumble royal right there. I'm gonna pose this question again...why is Black Thought not on anyone's "Top 5" or at least "Top 10" MC list? Dude is MAD underrated and, in my opinion, one of the most versatile cats in the game...real talk.

ARMED TO THE TEETH

I have always liked that phrase. I don’t know where it came from, but it is a fitting title for the new Swollen Members album that drops TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27th.

I spoke with Mad Child recently, and one of the questions I wanted to ask was about the title. I pretty much forgot about that question, and the 500 others I had prepared. It would have been a stupid question anyway. When the phone interview was set up, I was told we had 25 minutes. Mad Child could not have been a nicer dude, and we ended up talking for an hour. As a result, I have decided to do a two-part post. Stay tuned for more details about the interview.

I have been a fan of S&M for a long time. The first album I bought was Heavy. The next day I bought everything else the record store had (Balance, Bad Dreams, Monsters In The Closet). Since that magical time (when I didn’t give a fuck about the internet, and listened to new albums on a Discman at my local record store), they have released two studio albums: Black Magic and on Tuesday, Armed To the Teeth. One of the great things about these albums is the order of the tracks…they are made to be a complete listening experience from beginning to end. Black Magic was amazing. One of the highlights for me was “Weight” which featured Ghostface Killah, and was produced by none other than The Alchemist. Why do I always fucking digress? We are talking about the new album dammit.

It seems to me that Mad Child, Prevail, and Rob the Viking got backed into a corner in the last 3 years. Rather than languish, cry like bitches, and give up… they came out swingin’ like Battle Axe Warriors…..With the help of SubNoize Records, Tre Nyce, Everlast, Talib Kweli, Slaine, Glasses Malone, Young Kazh (please drop the Young, you just don’t need it!), and Tech N9ne.

This album is dope. I have to admit that a couple tracks kind of left me scratchin’ my head, but I do appreciate them a little more after my conversation with Mad Child. I’m still wondering why my copy did not include the 2 final tracks with La Coka Nostra and Glasses Malone, but I’m sure I’ll hear them eventually.

Go ahead and form your own opinion, because I don’t give a fuck, and I’m pretty sure they don’t either! Really though, Mad Child was sincerely interested in my thoughts as a fan, and I appreciated that. Favorite tracks right now: Bang Bang, Kyla, My Life, Concerto, and Warrior - check out the video:

Something New Remix...

So I'm back and gonna work to get a few things caught up this week. Lemme start off by sayin, if you have yet to cop that Fresh Espresso album...then I'm not sure all the punches to the throat, face, nuts, etc. are going to be enough to save your shitty excuse of a life. This shit gets better each and every time I listen to it. Then I come home from a long weekend of drinking and gambling to find that Catch's buddy, Stephan (@GrayMattr), had shot a video of, arguably, one of my favorite songs from "Glamor" called Something New. Then when I looked closer it was the Something New Remix featuring Grynch, Macklemore, and Larry Mizell Jr. Wow, this is dope stuff...a new verse from PSMOOV woulda been nice though. Not sure if he could top the original though, "she did this tongue roll/on my uh-oh/just so/I thought I was gonna uxplode/then I would need Dr. Huxtable"...genius. I gotta say the dude Stephan does some amazing work and I'm looking forward to seeing more *foreshadowing*. Peep the video below...

Panacea – Corkscrew Gaps

K-Murdock sent the new EP through to me the other night while I was enjoying the Subsoniq show on BackSpin (Sirius/XM), which he co-hosts. I gotta say I sometimes get stuck in a rut, listening to the same shit over and over. Not the same album or artist, but stuff that feels similar. A recent example would be La Coka Nostra and Slaughterhouse – as opposed to Mos Def and Talib Kweli. I don’t love one more than the other, but sometimes I need a little push. Thanks to Panacea for giving me that. The production is smooth, and the lyrics are sick. It is flowing, ethereal, and positive – it is the Hip Hop that we all need in these times of uncertainty. It’s not the borderline skinny-jeans. The last album was a good indicator, but…no, that’s not it. The endless collabos with pop-py stars of all genres? Getting warmer, but that’s not the proof I’ve been looking for. I mean, we all knew Ye had issues (he musta been drunk to think Beyonce’s video was one of the best of all time…her body, yes. I know it's taken some time for me to get this stuff up, oh well, it's the thought that counts!Just wanted to bring y'all some pictures and video from Bumbershoot. Minus the rain, it was a beautiful weekend.

U-N-I absolutely killed the stage, and nearly themselves while stage diving. Shout out to DJ Hyphen on the ones and twos back there. We see you homey!

Before we closed out the night with a little De La Soul, can't think of a better way to do it, there was some comedy and a little Mayer Hawthorne.

Day two was more of the same. Dyme Def brought a joint of their forthcoming EP "The Sextape" and fuck if I forgot the name of it. Something new and different from the brothaaas. They came out backed by Big World Breaks...

and brought the always lovely Choklate out to rock Suns Out and Grown Folk off her new album "To Whom It May Concern"...

GodSpeed took the stage with BWB as well. I just got hip to these dudes a couple weeks back and I gotta say, so far, I'm feelin them.

Cruised over to the EMP for a little Spaceman and D.Black. Yo, if you don't have that new D. Black "Ali'Yah" yet...go cop it. So nice...

That was about all I got of day two...Common Market put on an artistic spectacle and we didn't make it to see Swollen Members. Closed out the day with some Raphael Saadiq which was a nice way to cool down.

Day three started off with a bang as Macklemore took the Fisher-Green Stage, in his "hella schmedium jacket", and made it his own with the help of Grynch and Xperience along for the ride.

The real Bang Bang took place when we headed over to the Mainstage for a visit from The Knux. Dudes went hard...pause.

Caught a little more comedy by Aziz Ansari, Sarah Silverman, The Red Wine Boys and others. Missed Champagne Champagne, caught a little Janelle Monae and closed it out with Modest Mouse. All in all, despite the rain, it was a good weekend.

I have been less than stellar in my blog-posting duties lately. That doesn’t mean I have not been trying . . I’ve been lookin’ for inspiration pretty hard. Ironically, as I write this, Helmet and House of Pain (collabo from the “Judgment Night” soundtrack - “Just Another Victim”) are screaming at me and it seems eerily appropriate for my state of mind. . . maybe Jesus speaks to me through the Itunes DJ? I feel like the world, the radio, and people in general have beaten me down, but redemption is in the struggle. I am still, and always will be, a soldier for Hip Hop. I have been forced to go it alone without my Sirius radio and my Ipod at work lately and it is killing me. It seems like life hit me with the force of those Katrina waves against the levee. Thanks for the swift kick in the nuts, karma. I have an amazing woman by my side, but some enemies you must fight on your own. What enemy is that? Me (if you don’t get that, read some Sun Tzu). I must change my attitude. . . this does not mean I am relinquishing my right to hate on whomever I choose, but it does mean that I need to remember that I LOVE Hip Hop, and I will strive to look for the positive before I scream about the negative from the rooftops. As always, my relationship to music seems to mirror my attitude towards myself and life in general. I gotta say thank you to Benny, Catch, Subsoniq, my little brother, and my wife for helping me out. AYCE Presents: 20 questions with Brainstorm...

It's a new month and that means it's time again for another installment of AYCE's "20 questions with..." segment. Now, anyone out there that reads this little blog of ours knows that we tend to rep our PNW bredren to the fullest. Thats not to say that we don't appreciate music from other areas, just that we like to help get the 206 out there for all to enjoy. That being said, I hit up our next victim via Twitter (cough www.twitter.com/allyoucaneat cough) and invited him to sit in the hot seat. Dude JUMPED at the chance, ok, ok maybe not jumped, but was he was cool with it. So here it is producer and 1/3 of Seattle's own Dyme Def, Mr. Celestine AKA Mr. ExcellAtEverything...Brainstorm.

Let's get right into the music, and save all the bullshit for later...

AYCE: Dyme Def is compromised of Fearce Vil, S.E.V., and yourself as the MC's and you and BeanOne on production. What does each MC bring to the table that makes Dyme Def whole?

Brainstorm: I bring everything to the table, fuck them dudes, they're like my back up singers. When I say jump, they say how high!! Ok ok, SEV is the hype man...he's one of the reasons for all the energy in our live set. He's the "in yo face type dude" that makes it happen. You can even hear it in his verses, dude is a beast and honestly he's prolly the best in Dyme Def at this point. FEARCE is like the OG of the squad. He's the most clever dude in Dyme Def, his flow is impeccable and he has a real distinct voice. He's the one that always kept Dyme Def grounded when we would get big headed and such...kinda like the big brotha of the group (Shout out To C.O.). Me, I bring reality and the battle/lyrical aspect to the group. I started off battling so it's always been in my nature but I left it alone because I wanted to be a great songwriter. I'm the face of Dyme Def. I'm the voice of Dyme Def but witout them cats, none of that would even matter...not to mention i make some OK beats *laughing*

AYCE: My first experience with Dyme Def may have been when y'all opened for Lupe Fiasco at the UW Ballroom, and I have seen my fair share of DD shows since. The one thing that sticks out is the energy you three bring to the stage, where does all that energy come from, cause DD brings it like that EVERYtime? Are y'all on some "5 Hour Energy" shit?

Brain: Nah man, I mean, if you went to go see a group of dudes that just stood in one spot the whole time they were rappin and acted like they honestly didn't give a fuck about what anybody thought....would you pay to go see them live again? Even if they're music is hot on wax? We wild out cause we want people to REMEMBER us, and i think weve done a great job. Every show were gettin better and better and wilder and crazier...cause that's just what the fuck we do.

AYCE: Why did Dyme Def decide to scrap the new EP?

Brain: It was a last minute project that we wanted to put out to promote our next OFFICIAL EP titled "THE SEXTAPE" which will be an exclusive project with our partners in crime

T.I.T.S.(Two In The Shirt), ran by my man Marek, which is a clothing company that is doing EXTREMELY well. The project wasn't supposed to come out until almost next year but it got pushed up. We said fuck the EP we was workin on and lets just handle this cause its a way bigger opportunity. Those songs that we have recorded will be dropped as leaks close to the release date. We're still gonna drop this EP except were gonna drop a different song from it everyday. So if you want the whole thing check everyday for a new song and you'll, basically, have a whole EP before the weeks over, not to mention were still doing the "No Beat Is Safe Campaign".

AYCE: Since you brought it up, tell the folks that don't know the idea behind "no beat is safe".

Brain: Just takin popular and old school favorites and makin em our own, "no beat is safe". We also take request, so anybody who knows a beat you think we'd sound good on let us know!

AYCE: Are you finally going to release "Bad Nite" to the masses...if not when?

Brain: BAD NITE is such a weirdo song that we're thinkin we're gonna make a video for it, kinda like how we did that Kanye joint with the video behind it. The concept of the song is ill but anybody who's a fan of Dyme Def, and even if they're just gettin hip, it mite rub them the wrong way without a visual to go along with it (Way Hetero).

AYCE: Trust me, Bad Nite is bananas, and a video would be dope too. Now you're a Producer and MC, you pretty much excell at both, which do you prefer and why?

Brain: I've loved music my entire life. I started rappin at the age of 12, started takin it serious at the age of 16-17 and been doing every since and I'm 23 now. Sometimes I don't think people realize how seasoned I am in the game and the scene. I can honestly say that pretty much the whole PNW knows Dyme Def. We been at it for awhile now, and it's starting to pay off and flourish. I've been producing for about 4 years. When I tell people that they're AMAZED like, "wow, and you produced Get Down", or "you produced Not That Dude", or "you produced that Pinky And The Brain song" (among other various cuts) and I'm like "yeah". I took producing up in the first place because Dyme Def couldn't afford to buy beats, so I took the initiative to start producing myself. Luckily I was decent at it and I only got better. If I had to choose, I'd be a producer. More money involved, plus I'm not as good at it as I am at rapping. I love challenges!

AYCE: The video for "I'm Gone", which I thought was kinda dope, was shot entirely with the new iPhone 3GS...who came up with the idea and concept for the video?

Brain: It's kinda funny how that came about cause our manager, Josh Berman, and Fearce Villan still fight to this day about who ACTUALLY came up with it. Me, personally, I dont give a shit, it was a genius idea and I'm glad ONE of them muhfuckas came up wit it. *laughing*

AYCE: On the producer tip, you were the 2007 Red Bull Big Tune National Champion and got to make a track with Young Buck. Were there others to choose from, if so, what made you choose Buck?

Brain: There was but, due to a technicality, I didnt really GET to choose (although it prolly woulda been Buck anyway). I hate talking about it cause my hometown beat that whole situation down to the ground, so I'm tryna let it die out completly. For some people, who may be fans of other people from the town, it's still a sensitive subject so I do my best to avoid questions like this.

AYCE: While we're talking about Red Bull, there is a blog on your myspace about your experience in NYC. Lets hear it from your mouth...tell us what happened at 2008 Red Bull Big Tune Competition because you were the reigning 2007 National Champion, as well as 2008 Seattle champion, and then got ousted in the first round?

Brain: Short and simple, I'm not pointing fingers, but while I was up there I was having technical difficulties with the CDJ (as was everybody) and i couldnt get it to play. I was gettin yelled at, and rushed, so bout time I figured it out I was so nervous that I just played whatever beat was first on my cd. Didn't work out for me, so I tried the Red Bull theme to try to save face, but my opponent just had the better beats. Shoutout to my dude Hitmakers who beat me, we actually go way back. We used to battle each other on Rocbattle. That's the story in a nutshell.

AYCE: Understandable, moving on! Buck was definitely on some wild shit in the studio, hilarious. Do you continue to use the AKA "Digital Hands" given to you by Young Buck?

Brain: Nah, that shit was wack anyway. Imma stick with Brain.

AYCE: I think that's a very wise decision, my dude, you're fingers ain't that pretty anyway! Alright, forget Buck for a minute and give us the skinny on Saigon. Now that dude is a beast, physically and lyrically. How was it to work and tour with him? Just how geeked were the two of you to meet MISS Hilson?

Brain: Saigon is mad cool, that's like my big/lil bro *back to laughing*. He definitely laced me up while we were on the road together, and we've been talkin a lot even after the tour. Seeing Keri Hilson, shieeeet, I almost dropped my pants right in front her and pulled a Ron Burgundy and said "DONT ACT LIKE YOUR NOT IMPRESSED". I DONT THINK SHE KNOWS THAT I WILL EQUALIZE HER, won't be none of that talk of turnin her off fuckin with brain...I gets it in!

AYCE: Shoulda used the ol "I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany", I'm almost positive that would have impressed her. How big an influence have people like J. Moore, JakeOne, Vitamin D, and BeanOne been as "big brothers"/mentors to you?

Brain: J.Moore has always been an awesome mentor to me and he's always believed in me and looked out for me. He's blunt with me and lets me know if a beat is wack or not, which is probably why I've done so well in these Big Tunes. Jake-One is just more of an influence. That old ass fossil (shots fired) got slaps and if you listen to his shit, it's never crowded up or sounds like too much...perfect layering and perfect drums. Dude is a beast. Vitamin D is MY favorite producer. Vitamin is almost TOOOOOO good. I've heard a LOT of his beats and, I can honestly say, I've NEVER heard a wack Vitamin D beat EVER. Some better than others, but never wack. BeanOne, man where do I start, there ain't enough words to describe me and Beans relationship. That's like my brotha from anotha ya know. I tell him all the time he's the vanilla face version of me! We're JUST alike, grinding ass, hard headed, argumentative, weed smoking, liquor drinking, beat making, ass friends till the end...no chucky. Lately we've been kinda distant due to schedules and Bean's new addition to his family...but to this day it's still Dyme Def, BeanOne, SPACE MUSIC RECIPE.

Now on to the rest of the bullshit..

AYCE: I read somewhere that you quit playing organized sports at 16 to focus on music...True? Is there still a "baller" inside of you somewhere?

Brain: We all did, chasing this got damn rap shit. I ain't picked up a ball in damn near 3 years, but im sure i still got it. Just need to get my lazy, rappin ass back in the gym and get back in shape and I'm pretty sure I could run with the best of em.

AYCE: Now, this baller, has issued a challenge. The "No Hawk" showdown...any chance of this becoming a reality or was that just the liquor talkin?

Brain: Liquor had a bit to do with it, but I'm definitely down to make it happen. See, Spaceman (of Sportn' Life Records) doesn't drink or smoke...he's READY (way hetero), me on the other hand I partake in both of those activities on the regular.

Now Space tellin me to get on the court and play right now, would be like me sayin "Yo Space, lets drink a whole 5th of Jack (Daniels, for you young folk) and smoke a zip of kush...NOT HAPPENING!

AYCE: Now, that would be a site to be seen, maybe that would be the equalizer...Space loaded and zooted and you outta shape! So we all know about the infamous "broken laptop" but while I was searching around the net a bit, I came across a picture of a young Brainstorm with, what appears to be, a "new" Palm Treo...go ahead and tell the folks what you're rockin now...and don't try and front cause I have born witness...

Brain: Shit I don't need to front homie. I got a Treo 700p with a broken antennae AND fucking with them porn websites, or whenever I do a certain things on it makes my shit reboot itself. All bad. I do have a brand new Blackberry Curve that I haven't turned on yet, I'm just ridin this Treo till the wheels fall off.

AYCE: Homie, the wheels done fell off and kept going without you. Time for you to roll with that Blackberry. Which would make it easier for you to tweet! Twitter, ahhh, Twitter...is it an addiction or what?

Brain: Most definitely, for me it's more of a networking tool and a tool to talk to people you may not get too otherwise. It's cool to see how many people actually give a fuck what you think. I'm close to 700 followers, and I'm a nobody. The thing is, my twittering is entertaining and I actually respond (or try to respond) to EVERYBODY even if I don't follow you. People love my "Dear ______" letters, ending it with "Thank you for your punk ass time"...I kill em every time with those.

AYCE: I'm not gonna lie either, those "Dear _____" letters are some funny shit! Who, well besides us, are you're favorite "followers" and "followees"?

Brain: Hexmurda and my guy slopfunkdust are the funniest dudes on there hands down. Shaq is pretty funny, Peter Griffin is hilarious and so is drakesknee *knee slapping laugh (pun intended)*. Wale's ego is pretty funny too! Sometimes whoever be doing some of these fake ones, I wonder who they truly are and if they're really as funny as they seem. Pause Police are funny, oh, and so is The Sluthunters *earmuffs kids*

AYCE: You have coined a few "Brainisms" along the way and used one a couple times here. Tell everybody the true definition of, probably one of your most notable phrases, "Way Hetero"?

Brain: "Way Hetero" was my response to the whole "no homo" movement. "No homo" is startin, and was startin, to get played out because people was takin the shit way too far. I thought about what I could say that could mean the same thing but sound a whole lot better, so instead of "no homo" I say "Way Hetero" you use it just like you would use "pause" or "no homo".

AYCE: Speaking of "pause", what is your obsession with "prick"...ahhmmm PAUSE...the word "prick"? *laughing*

Brain: What the fuck? I ain't got no kinda obsession with anything prick-like homie. Now imma take it as a sign of disrespect and not answer this question.

AYCE: Ok, and moving on again *crickets chirping......*. You look like a grown ass man, and claimed earlier to be a "liquor drinkin, beat makin ass fool"...word on the street is that you can't fuck with tequila (Patron, ladies and gentlemen, we don't mess with that other shit), what gives?

Brain: Before I started drinkin the grown man shit I drink now (Way Hetero) *shots fired in Catch's direction*, I was KILLIN bottles of Patron. I don't mind takin a shot or two but as far as just casually drinkin it like its good, NAHHHHHH, whiskey or cognac is better than Patron ANYDAY. Patron ain't nothing but a hangover in a bottle for me now, fuck Patron, and fuck ANYONE WHO THINKS LESS OF ME BECAUSE OF IT *someone call 911, I think that shot hit Catch*. Brain: Are you callin me smelly? I'll have you know my essence is like a pheromone for the LADIES. They love my smell, they breathe it in as if it was they're very own supply of oxygen. You gotta say it like that or he doesn't respond. Spaceman has long been one of the favorites around AYCE. Dude is bonkers on the mic and an all around good dude. You can hit dude up on twitta, @Spac3man, but make sure your funny if you expect him to follow!DeVon, the big boss, over at Sportn' Life sent through this nice little freeverse video from the Spaceman himself. After choppin it up with DeVon the other night outside Nectar, sounds like there is more to come from Space and label mate Fatal Lucciuano.
