Knowing somebody close that has bed bugs can also sometimes be hard. When you hear that person talk about how they can’t sleep at night due to the fear of bed bugs, or how they have bites all over their body it almost seems like it impacts their daily lives just as much as if they had an illness or cancer. Depression follows, you can see it in the attitudes and the way they talk about work and daily life. The only thing you can do is to listen to what they have to say. You feel helpless because you can’t really do anything to make that person feel better or give them advice. In the end you just feel really bad for that person. In a way it sort of affects your life too.

With summer approaching fast, there will be an increase in bedbug activities in the city. This is mainly due to travelers going in and out of highly populated urban areas, and that bed bugs are becoming are growing and becoming more of an epidemic. “Bedbug infestations are most common in July, August, and September” said Jeffrey White, a research entomologist (NBCNY Newspaper). There is some talk a big explosion during the summer, with some areas receiving a 400% increase such as Alaska. Although they are only talking about NYC, this could happen in any other city. Fascinating article, and actually contests previous held beliefs that bed bugs were incapable of spreading any illnesses or bacteria from host to host.

More important than the spread of any kind of illness, is that this kind of news should urge us more and more, to learn about bed bug prevention, and how to avoid spreading it to neighbors, friends or loved ones.

Read the article on Forbes about the “most infested cities” in the United States. Of course New York City was mentioned. An important line reads

“lack of knowledge regarding control of bed bugs due to their prolonged absence”

which comments on why they believe bed bugs have seen such a recent and large resurgence. Education!

On Yahoo’s front page today, bed bugs were listed 7th from a list of 10, for 2010′s biggest obsessions. Bed bugs joined the list alongside more popular obsessions like the iPhone, iPad, Facebook, Lindsay Lohan, and others.

The article outlined where they hide, where the infestation problem is concentrated in the U.S. (New York) and the hefty price tag of eradicating them.

Top 5 infested cities, according to Terminix are:

1. New York City
2. Philadelphia
3. Detroit
4. Cincinatti
5. Chicago

Cities are ranked according to how many phone calls Terminix receives.

“In the past, offices might get a couple of calls a month for bedbug eradication,” said spokesman Clint Briscoe. “Now, some of them are getting several dozen a week.”

5th Ave. Juicy Couture location in New York closed today for a bed bug infestation problem. These infestations in New York are no longer a surprise anymore – the state hands down has one of the worst infestation problems in the United States.

Interesting tidbit as well – about 15% of all my visitors are from New York City alone.
