Computer maintenance is a part of everyone’s lives now, much like owning a car and getting it serviced, it just has to be done. Computers are the same, needing regular maintenance, as they get clogged up with truck loads of hidden files.
Most of the time the average computer user has no idea that they are actually messing up a computer just by using it. Do you surf the internet, read file attachments from your email, or simply write a Word document? Without even personally saving a file on your computer, there are hundreds of different files save automatically each time you do anything on your computer. For example if you receive an email with a Word document attached to it and open it to read instead of saving it first, the document Will be temporarily saved in the Windows Temp folder. Imagine after reading this Word document, you try to save it to your computer without looking where you are saving it. If you do not choose where to save this file it will be saved in a temporary folder. Eventually this temp folder becomes quite large in size without you even realizing.
In the video below I show you how I perform Computer maintenance on my computer. Of course there are programs out there that can do all this for you, which I will mention in a later article. Here are some steps I go through:

1. Move files I want to keep and store for later use.
2. Delete files i do not need.
3. Remove programs I do not need. (Ones I have installed)
4. Delete old emails.
5. Delete Temp files manually.
6. Delete junk files from the rubbish bin… Email programs have a junk and deleted folder to clean out also.
7. Perform disk Cleanup. (Getting what I missed)
8. Defrag with JKdefrag.`

There are many reasons why you should take care of your computer. Number one is that there is a large investment for most people, and you would probably like to keep running as long as possible.

How to increase the speed of your hard disk in windows XP

View two windows side by side using Smart Window

Smart Window or Snap, allows the user to view two windows side-by-side in Windows 7 without having to manually re-sizing either window. This is also useful if you don't want to use Alt-Tab between 2 windows. Below is an example of what this looks like in Windows 7.

1. Click and Drag on the top title bar of the first window so your mouse pointer hits either the left or right side of your screen. Let go of the window when you see the outline of the window re-size to ½ of the screen.

2. Then choose the other window you wish to view on the side of the first window. Click and Drag the 2nd window to the opposite side of the screen until the mouse pointer hits the side of the screen and resizes to the other ½ of the screen.

These steps can also be done using the Windows key and the right and left arrow keys by doing the below steps.

1. While pressing the Windows button on your keyboard, press either the Right or Left arrow. This will move the open window to either the left or right portion of the screen.

2. Choose the other Window you wish to view to the side of the Window in step one. When using the Windows key for this step, as described in step one above, use the opposite (right or left) arrow button that you used in step one.

There are three different ways to get out of this view, below are some of the different methods this can be done.

1. Click and drag the window so the mouse pointer hits the top of the screen and let go. This will put the window back to regular size.

2. If you just want to view one of the minimized windows that was in side by side view, simply click and while holding the mouse button down shake the window you wish to view and it will minimize all other widows to the Taskbar. To reopen windows that were minimized by this step, simply click and shake the window you are using again, and they will re-appear.

3. Press the Windows key on your keyboard, and at the same time, press either the up arrow or the down arrow. The up arrow will maximize the screen; the down arrow will put the screen to minimize.

Many computers can be speed up without spending any money. A memory upgrade is the best value for your money if the tips on this site aren't speeding up your computer enough. When doing simple things such as web browsing, word processing, and checking email for most users, the CPU, hard drive, and motherboard are not going to be the bottleneck. When I advise others, I usually tell them that if their computer can't be upgraded with a simple memory upgrade, it is probably worth looking into a new computer. In general, I wouldn't spend more than 100 dollar on a memory upgrade for an old computer. If it is going to cost hundreds to upgrade, a new computer may be a better option. Also, a little bit of memory can go a long way. For example, upgrading from 512 MB to 1 GB will make a huge difference and will probably be inexpensive.

There are three reasons why we recommend a memory upgrade for the average user. First, memory is cheap. Second, memory will noticeably speed up common applications such as web browsing, checking email, word processing, and overall system responsiveness. The last reason is that memory is easy for the average user to install. I would recommend going to Crucial.com and using their memory scanner to find and buy the correct memory. You can also find out the specs of your computer and then buy the appropriate memory as well from other sellers. This "may" save you a few bucks, but you also risk buying incorrect memory. I have had many people come to me and ask for help and it ended up that they bought the incorrect memory. I recommend using the Crucial Memory Advisor Tool since you will get the exact memory you need from a reputable company. This tool will analyze your system, find the exact memory you need, and then give you a few different upgrade options.

Memory for install

Stage 1 of 3: Removing Old RAM
• – Shut down the computer.
• – Unplug the computer.
• – Remove the desktop computer's cover. You will probably have to loosen a few screws or press a button on the back of the computer to release the cover from the rest of the computer.
• – Locate the old memory on the motherboard.
• – Release the latches that are holding the old memory in place which are located on each end of the memory.
• – Carefully remove the old memory by pulling on the center of the memory in a direction that is perpendicular to the motherboard.

Stage 2 of 3: New RAM for install
• – Take the new memory out of its package.
• – Take the new memory in your hand and line up the break in the memory to the break in the memory slot.
• – Install the new memory by placing the memory into the slot you have just removed the old memory from and push the memory into the motherboard until the latches snap the memory into place.

Stage 3 of 3: Close Up the PC
• – Put the computer cover back on the computer in the same way you removed it making sure that the cover is securely in place.
• – Plug the computer in.
• – Start the computer.
• – If the computer starts correctly then you know that you have successfully installed the new memory.

Troubleshooting:
If the computer doesn't start up correctly, check the following things:
Make sure that-
• the memory is compatible with your computer.
• the memory has latched all the way into the memory slot.
• the computer is plugged in.
