Meet and Greet with ASG Candidates: 2/10

A meet and greet will be held in the Campus Center lobby from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today — Friday, Feb. 10 — for everyone to meet the candidates for the upcoming Allegheny Student Government presidential and vice presidential elections. The candidates are Tyler Gund and Sydney Cordell, Alexis Nielson and Colin Soleim, and Charlie Watkins and Michael Waine. Pizza will be served. The presidential and vice presidential primary elections will be held from Monday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m. to Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. If you have any questions, email malika@allegheny.edu.

Meeting of New Group “Women in Science”: 2/15

“Women in Science” is a new faculty-led student support group to encourage and support female students interested in pursuing a career in science. We invite you to our kick-off event, “Women Sharing a Scientific Moment in Time,” on Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Schultz East Alcove. The goal of this event is to facilitate discussions between students and faculty regarding a future in science, while helping to strengthen bonds among women in the field. We will have faculty representation in the fields of chemistry, biology, environmental science, physics, neuroscience, and mathematics. We will be discussing an NPR webcast, Women in Science: Climbing the Career Ladder. Please listen to the podcast prior to our meeting. It is only 20 minutes. Women’s Basketball Team in Play 4Kay: 2/11

The Allegheny women’s basketball team will be participating in Play 4Kay on Saturday, Feb. 11. The initiative hopes to raise breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Allegheny will be donating all gate receipts for Saturday’s games against Denison: women’s basketball (at 1 p.m.) and men’s basketball (at 3 p.m.). In addition, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be selling carnations and holding a 50/50 raffle. Allegheny athletics and SAAC encourage fans to attend in an effort to support both women’s basketball and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Interviews for internships with the Summer Treatment Program — developed by Dr. William E. Pelham of the University of Buffalo to help children who are diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) — will be held on Feb. 21 and 29. The program is hiring interns and is open to any student who is a psychology, social work education or related human services major, has knowledge of ADHD, has experience with children and adolescents and is willing to work with a diverse group of children. Interested applicants should make an appointment no later than Feb. 17 with Kay Nageotte in ACCEL. Applicants should give a copy of their cover letter and resume to Kay when they come in to make an interview appointment.

First Lecture in ES Department’s Spring Speaker Series: 2/10

Please join the Environmental Science Department this Friday for a lecture by Dr. John Stolz, director of Duquesne University’s Center for Environmental Research Education, titled “Environmental Impacts of Marcellus Shale Gas Extraction.” The Marcellus Shale is thought to contain 500 trillion cubic feet of natural gas trapped in rock. New and controversial techniques known as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are being used to extract it. Learn about the environmental implications of these new natural gas extraction techniques and enjoy free pizza. The lecture will be held from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Feb. 10 in Quigley 101.

Pocket Factory 22 Founders To Talk About Innovative, Sustainable Modes of Manufacturing: 2/11

Bilal Ghalib and Alex Hornstein, two entrepreneurs who left San Francisco in mid-January on a cross-country road trip to talk about innovative and sustainable modes of manufacturing, are making a stop in Meadville this week. Ghalib and Hornstein, founders of Pocket Factory 22, will be at the Meadville Market House on Saturday, Feb. 11. From 9 to 11 a.m. they will demonstrate an assortment of 3D printers, sell unique creations they have made from those printers and talk about the potential of desktop manufacturing. They will be joined by Allegheny faculty and students. Everyone is welcome to attend this free event, whether they are interested in sustainable manufacturing, want to learn more about how to use 3D printing to create their own designs or are just curious about how the technology works.

Presentation and Activism Training Workshop with Bill McKibben: 2/16

One of the world’s best known environmentalists, author and activist Bill McKibben, will give a presentation titled “350: The Most Important Number in the World” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 in Shafer Auditorium. The event, part of the Year of Sustainable Communities, is free and open to the public. More information can be found here. McKibben will also collaborate with Students for Environmental Action to host an activism training workshop from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Quigley Auditorium on Feb. 16. McKibben will share successful strategies and insights from his many years as a leading environmental activist. On Feb. 14 you will receive an email from President Mullen asking you to participate in this important study. That e-mail will contain a link to the on-line questionnaire, which should take about 15 minutes to complete. The NSSE help colleges understand their students’ experiences. It asks the questions that matter, for example, do you interact with faculty outside of classes; how much time do you spend memorizing facts compared to discussing ideas; and what kinds of activities are you involved in? This is one of the most important surveys Allegheny asks students to complete. As a token of Allegheny’s appreciation of their time, students who complete this spring’s NSSE will be sent a gift certificate good for a $2 purchase at the Wrecking Ball Café. Alpha Chi Omega Sells Carnations for Valentines Day

Alpha Chi Omega will be selling carnations for Valentines Day to raise money for Women’s Services. Carnations with a love note can be delivered on Valentine’s Day. You can buy carnations every day this week, starting tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. and continuing to next Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Campus Center and Brooks. The price will be $2 for 1 carnation, and $5 for 3 carnations.

Student/Faculty Summer Collaborative Research

The Provost and Dean of the College Office announces funding opportunities and availability of the application form for Student/Faculty Summer Collaborative Research for Summer 2012. All application materials must be received by the Provost and Dean of the College Office by 5:00 p.m. on March 31 in order to be considered for funding. Student/Faculty Summer Collaborative Research funding offers students and faculty the opportunity to work together on a research project of mutual interest. The project must not be directly related to the student’s senior project, although it can serve as preparation. This funding is not available for independent studies, summer internships, assistantships, or summer employment opportunities. Students interested in obtaining summer employment should contact the Financial Aid Office for a list of positions available during the summer. In order to be eligible for funding, student research must be conducted in collaboration with an Allegheny faculty member and the applicant must be a continuing student in good academic standing. The Provost’s office will make the awards and notify students and faculty. The Student/Faculty Summer Collaborative Research Application Form can be found here.

A childcare leave policy has been approved for faculty and staff. An employee whose spouse or partner gives birth is entitled to five work days of leave immediately following the birth with no loss of pay or benefits. An employee may request additional unpaid time off beyond the five work days under the College’s Family and Medical Leave Act Policy. Yoga for ALS Week: 2/6 – 2/10

Starting Monday, Feb. 6, Braxton Rose is doing Yoga for ALS Week. In addition to Braxton’s usual yoga classes — which take place at 5:30 to 6:45 Tuesday-Friday at the Wise Center dance studio — Braxton will be teaching additional classes. A schedule can be found here. The goal is to raise $1,000 for ALS. Alll the classes are donation based: although they are all free, any donation of $5 or $10 would be greatly appreciated.
