A webinar is open to all who RSVP on “Genderqueer and Non-Binary Students: Research and Practice,” on Monday, May 20, from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Campus Center 302. This one-hour webinar is sponsored by the ACPA Standing Committee for LGBT Awareness. This session is open to all individuals who have completed Level 1 and Level 2 of Gator Safe Zone as well as all others who are interested. RSVP to vguerrero@allegheny.edu before May 19. The webinar is from 11 a.m. to noon, brunch will be available at 10:45 a.m., and the session will close with a 30-minute to 1-hour discussion. The webinar is presented by Symone Simmons, Kara Devaney, and T.J. Jourian of Loyola University Chicago. Description: When seeking to serve transgender students, practitioners and researchers often reconstruct the gender binary of men/women. Students who identify as genderqueer and/or non-binary often still feel left out as programs and services are implemented to better accommodate transgender students. This session will present current research in higher education on genderqueer students, examples of good practice on various campuses, and provide opportunity for practitioners and researchers to identify next steps for work with genderqueer students. This program session challenges participants to think, research, and practice beyond the confines and boundaries of the gender binary system that we live and operate within in our various roles on campus. Our students possess many identities on campus and our profession must be equipped with the knowledge and information needed to serve such a large diversity of students. This session will challenge participants to expand their lenses and learning around gender, and explore the possibilities of gender without boundaries.

Please arrive between 10:30 and 11 a.m. for brunch: the session will begin promptly at 11 a.m. Location will be sent via your registration confirmation. Session summary: Track 1 – Developing a Common Understanding. This two-hour session focuses on understanding key terms and the impact of language as they relate to gender, sexuality, and individual identities. This first track helps participants clarify their own attitudes and beliefs about homophobia and transphobia while also identifying examples of heterosexism and privilege. This track aims to assist participants in understanding how the stated objectives relate to their own role on campus. Individuals who participate in Track One have the option to continue to Track Two and are provided with an introduction guide for ongoing reference and to continue building their knowledge.

More and more of us are reading, working, and playing on mobile devices. While Computing Services will continue doing what we can to help you keep information safe, you are the person most responsible for protecting your identity and the data entrusted to you. With this in mind, we share three suggestions to help you be safer when using a smartphone or mobile device. 1) Enable the “passcode” or “screenlock” option on your phone or tablet to limit others’ access to personal information and data available on the device. 2) Register with a Find/Wipe Service like Find My iPhone/iPad or something comparable for Android to help locate and remove sensitive data from a lost device. 3) Use your mobile data plan (3G/4G) instead of public WiFi when connecting outside of your home or college networks. Your mobile data plan is generally more secure than a public WiFi network. A longer list of safer mobile habits is available on the Computing Services web site. Want to discuss your computing habits and look for ways to more safely and efficiently use resources necessary for your work? Contact Computing Services at 332-2755 or create a Web Help Desk ticket to begin that conversation.

The response was better than we could have hoped for, with some really great comments, constructive criticism, and ideas. (We’ve put together a page answering some of the common questions we received here.) We can’t thank you enough for contributing your thoughts to this project. The launch of the new home page was an unqualified success due to the participation and support of numerous offices and individuals across campus. Thank you!

Physical Plant has recently received many requests for grills and propane. For many reasons, we no longer provide either of these to students, but you may rent a charcoal grill from Lloyd’s Rentals (336-2336, 1355 South Main Street, Meadville). If you are going to use the grill on college property, however, you must first check with the Office of Safety and Security (332-3357) and have it approved prior to use. In recent weeks Physical Plant has also received numerous requests for gas and gas cans. Although Physical Plant is more than happy to assist students and staff whenever possible, we do not provide gas or gas cans. Questions can be directed to Physical Plant at 332-5378.

Please check your email for an invitation from President Mullen, Provost DeMeritt, Dean DiChristina, or Professor Murphree. If you have not yet completed the YFCY (first-year students) or the CSS (seniors), you should have received an e-mail from each of these individuals asking you to participate in an important study. Those e-mails contained a link to the on-line questionnaire, which should take about 20 minutes to complete. The YFCY for first-year students and the CSS for graduating seniors help colleges understand their students’ experiences; they ask the questions that matter. These two surveys are administered nationally to thousands of college students every spring. They are follow-up instruments to the Freshman Survey, administered the summer before you came to Allegheny. As a token of appreciation for the time involved, students who complete the on-line questionnaire will be sent a gift certificate good for a $2 purchase at the Wrecking Ball Café. For more information about these studies or questions about them, please contact Director of Institutional Research Marian Sherwood at marian.sherwood@allegheny.edu or 814-332-2983, or Dr. Richard Bowden, chair of Allegheny’s Institutional Review Board, at rbowden@allegheny.edu or 814-332-2869.
