Students who are thinking about living off campus next year should be aware of Allegheny’s policy regarding financial aid and off-campus housing before a lease is signed. This policy has helped to assure that students are making their housing choices based on sound decisions without regard to an advantage created through financial aid to live off campus.

Need-based financial eligibility is determined by the cost of education minus tuition, fees, room and board costs, and an estimation of costs for books, transportation and personal expenses. The standard cost of education used for students living off campus is less than those remaining in campus owned housing. With the reduction to cost, there is a similar reduction to need, so less financial aid is available.

For 2010-11, students choosing to live off campus incurred up to a $2,400 reduction in eligibility for need-based gift assistance (all grants and endowed scholarships). We encourage students to contact the Financial Aid Office by phone or schedule an appointment to discuss this policy with us.

Because Congress was late in passing major tax legislation in 2010, the IRS needs extra time to update its systems, causing a delay for some taxpayers from filing their federal tax returns this year. However, we want to remind students and parents they can file the FAFSA using estimated financial information. It is very easy to update your FAFSA information once a federal tax return has been filed. Allegheny’s priority FAFSA filing deadline for applicants is February 15th, and for returning students is March 15th. If you have any questions about completing the FAFSA, please feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office at fao@allegheny.edu or by telephone at 800-835-7780.
