Computing Services Announces the Technology Workshops for Summer 2008

For the fourth year, Allegheny College Computing Services is offers workshop on various aspects of technology available at the College. This year eleven workshops will be offered in June and July thanks to the expertise of many folks around campus that incorporate technology in creative yet practical ways in their daily work. Working on Summer Workshops for College Employees

After a few really productive brainstorming sessions, the field of possible topics for this year's employee training sessions narrows into an exciting mix of topics that range from desktop publishing to tips on greener computing. Topics still under consideration are:

We chose the topics based on questions received through User Services, surveys conducted by AAC and general direction that Computing Services and technology are heading. Over the coming weeks the list of topics will be finalized and a schedule created. There is still planning to do so ideas are welcome. You are invited to share your ideas by commenting on this post or by contacting Computer Services at ext. 2755 or computing@allegheny.edu.

NITLE Instructional Technology Workshop Registration Deadline

Friday, April 4th is the registration deadline for the NITLE workshops on teaching students who grew up in the digital age. The workshops Teaching Digital Immigrants and Visual Literacy: Tools for Teaching and Learning with Images still have spaces available. Both workshops are full-day sessions that will be offered on May 15 and 16 respectively. Participation in these workshop is open to members of the Allegheny community and faculty, librarians, and technologists from peer colleges of the NITLE network. Visit the online registration form before Friday April 4 to reserve your place in these workshops. The registration period for the remaining instructional technology workshop remains open until a week prior to the workshop.

NITLE Workshop on Technologies for Teaching Writing

I want to bring to your attention an opportunity provided by NITLE on Technologies for Teaching Writing. The day long workshop will examine the impact digital tools have on the teaching of writing and provide an overview of tools that facilitate:

the draft and and revision writing process;
faculty and peer review;
public and private writing;
and new forms of communication, such as multimedia.

This workshop is being host by Southwestern University on May 3, 2008. Contact James Fadden for more details and registration information.

Julie Evans, Chief Executive Director for Project Tomorrow - NetDay, spoke again at this year's Educause Annual Conference on expectations of K-12 students in regards to technology use and ways they wish to learn. Tomorrow's Students: Are We Ready For the New 21st-Century Learners? If this sparked your fancy you might also be interested in these workshops being offered May 15 and 16 for faculty, technologists, librarians of Allegheny College and NITLE colleges.

May 15: Teaching Digital Natives: Strategies for Digital Immigrants (Registration Deadline: April 4, 2008)

WebCT Lunches Scheduled to Discuss Sakai Migration

We would like to invite everyone who has used WebCT in the past or is currently using it to attend a lunch discussion on EITHER Monday, February 25, 2008 at noon or Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 12:30 pm. Both sessions will be held in the Campus Center, Room 301/302 and lunch will be provided. The main purpose of this discussion is to tell you more about Sakai, the new software that will be replacing WebCT beginning Fall 2008, and to talk about the transition from WebCT to this product. Podcasting in Education - A Different Model From Students At UBC

With the growth of podcasting and other user created content at Allegheny, I thought this article from NITLE's Liberal Education Today. Here is an excerpt of the post -

Notes on a presentation about student podcasting from University of British Columbia (UBC), given at the ELI 2008 annual conference. The Prototype of an Educational Podcasting Initiative (PEPI) project involved multiple UBC offices, including Land and Food Systems, journalism, the library, public relations, and instructional technology. The goal was to support podcasting in a different way than profcasting, which was seen as very often done. A second goal was to move somewhat away from dependence on Apple's iTunes. Pedagogical goals: improving communication skills, engaging academic content in a new way, adding digital fluency, and reaching a larger audience.

Learning, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) is please to announce two instructional technology workshops presented in conjunction with the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) -

May 15, 2008: Teaching Digital Natives: Strategies for Digital Immigrants
May 16, 2008: Visual Literacy: Using Images for Teaching and Learning

The workshops will focus on the impact emerging technology has on liberal arts education and methodologies for taking advantage of those technologies within a liberal arts philosophy. The materials and activities of the workshop are geared to faculty and those who support instruction at liberal arts colleges with limited seats available. Participation in this workshop is open to members of the Allegheny community and NITLE Network colleges. Similar workshops in years past provided an opportunity to investigate new instructional technology and learn how those tools are being utilized by instructors at peer institutions. The registration deadline for this workshop is April 4, 2008 if you are interested in attending or learning more please contact James Fadden.

Our Life Online - A Student Panel From the University of Mary Washington

Last year, I found a podcast from the University of Mary Washington that provided an interesting window into the lives of students in regards to how they view their life online. This year the folks at UMW offer us an update from a new panel of students as the culminating session of UMW's Student Academy on Information Technologies. While obviously anecdotal, what the students share is consistent with what is being reported and put forth by leaders and journals in the field of education.

In this episode, Glen Wurst shares his experience with PowerPoint and the need to balance the strengths of the tool with the content you need to present. He also spends some time talking about using PowerPoint with PRS (aka Clicker) technology.
