TODAY’S READING: 1 CHRONICLES 23-25

In today’s reading, we focus on the description of Moses in 1 Chronicles 23.14. Here is defined simply as a man of God. In other places he is hailed as a great person of faith, Hebrews 11.23-28. He is noted for his humility, Numbers 12.3. All in all, Moses’ life was one of complete dedication and devotion to God. How would you like to be remembered? Each day we are building our legacy. What example are you setting? Make it your goal to be remembered for your love and dedication to God. Live in such a way that others will want to follow your lead in being a man or woman of God. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you, Philippians 4.9.

Will we move in faith and trust by remaining committed to God’s ways when temptation comes? Will we be courageous and resist? Will we stand true in matters related to righteousness and holiness? God gives victory to those who walk in His ways.
Lesson 10 – How Grace Demonstrates the Light of God

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Introduction:

Over the last thirteen weeks, we have sought to understand what is involved in walking in the light. We have discussed what is involved in the conversion process and developing a new attitude toward sin. We’ve spoken about our personal responsibility in chasing away the darkness and moving with total trust in God.

Finally, we wish to discuss the element of grace and how it brilliantly demonstrates the light of God. We will do this by first discussing our viewpoint of God. Then we will examine Ephesians 2 and remind ourselves of the depths of darkness which we once occupied. A deep recognition of these facts will serve as the motivation behind everything we do in Christ.

How does grace demonstrate the light of God?

What is Our View of God?

How we view God matters. In my perspective, mankind has constantly battled internally on how to achieve proper balance in how to relate to God. In some ways, it feels as if we reside on a giant pendulum that swings back and forth toward extremes. In American culture, some tend to relate to God as a huge teddy bear, who will just “love” everyone into heaven. Almost a decade ago two prominent men from central Indiana wrote a book promoting universalism that created quite a stir.?1 In If Grace is True, authors Jim Mulholland and Phil Gulley argue that all persons will be saved, because a loving God could not possibly send anyone to eternal punishment. This viewpoint ignores the clear teaching of passages like John 14.6; Romans 1.18; 9.22; 2 Thessalonians 1.7-9; Hebrews 10.30-31; and Revelation 20.11-15. Those who look to God as One who will ignore sin live with a sense of false security. This extreme must be avoided at all costs.

Universalism stands as a polar opposite to the other perspective some possess about God. From this side, God is seen as not much more than a Commander who, almost without mercy. moves to barely save those who have the most abundant amount of works. Everything relating to God is viewed through the prism of law. People who approach God in this way continually work for grace, rather than from it. God is pictured only as a righteous Judge, sitting high above, always angry when we fall short of His expectations. This perspective ignores passages like 1 John 2.1-6 and 4.8, 16. It becomes very easy for those who live under the shadow of this viewpoint to live in fear and uncertainty concerning their salvation. Their salvation is never secure because they could lose it at any moment. This extreme must be avoided at all costs.

And so the pendulum swings. Passages like 1 John 4.8, 16 must be balanced with Hebrews 10.30-31. God will not love everyone into heaven, but He is not an angry, abusive master who is ready to punish us at every mistake. He is our Father, and we need to relate to Him in this way. While we may be punished for our wrongdoings, as long as we are in possession of a penitent heart, God will never reject us. In Scripture, passages that describe God are included for a high purpose: that is, the need to approach spiritual life with all seriousness. Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God’s kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off, Romans 11.22.

The proper viewpoint of God seeks to identify with Him as our Father. He earnestly desires a relationship with us and was willing to sacrifice all in order to accomplish it. I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty, 2 Corinthians 6.18. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins, 1 John 4.9-10. This relationship is not precarious. It is rock-solid and secure. For You, LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; You are exalted above all the gods. You who love the LORD, hate evil! He protects the lives of His godly ones; He rescues them from the power of the wicked. Light dawns for the righteous, gladness for the upright in heart. Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous ones, and praise His holy name, Psalm 97.9-12.

Since God is our Father, what are some key attributes we learn about Him as we walk in the light?

Our Father is good. The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation, Exodus 34.6-7. See also Psalm 25.8; 85.8-13; 100.5; 106.1; and 119.68. In the New Testament, John the Baptist proclaimed, a person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven, John 3.27. James declared, every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change, James 1.17. Simply put, God is the source of goodness. He is the rule and measure of what we truly know to be good. This fact is something that should cause us to move with confidence as we walk in the light.

In Romans 8.28 Paul declared, And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. As we live inside a relationship with Him, the Father actively works in our life for good. We need to give Him the glory….for everything!

Our Father is full of grace. They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness, Psalm 145.7. Throughout the New Testament, these passages testify to the overwhelming grace of God:

Romans 1.5: through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations,

Romans 3.24: We are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

Ephesians 2.8-10: For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Hebrews 4.16: Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

In making His grace available to us, God gives us what we do not deserve. Our actions do not merit salvation. Grace involves a free gift. In giving salvation, God gives it to us without any consideration of our character at the time, Romans 5.10; 1 John 4.10. God’s grace is expressed in two ways. One is easily seen through physical blessings that all persons receive. God has given us life, health, prosperity, good weather, education,….everything! Everything anyone possesses in this life is by the grace of God. But there is also the grace that is dispensed relating to salvation. For those who act on the call of the gospel, God’s grace provides:

Forgiveness from sin, 1 John 1.9.

Every spiritual blessing, Ephesians 1.3.

Heaven, John 14.1-3.

Our Father is always near. He is actually not far from each one of us, “‘In him we live and move and have our being’, Acts 17.27b-28a. See also Jeremiah 23.23-24 and Haggai 2.5. God is always at hand, working to express His love. He works to draw us to Him through His word and prayer. God is present and actively participates in our life. There is no place or situation that is too far to be under God’s protecting hand.

Our Father is full of love. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, Deuteronomy 7.7-8. See also John 14.31; Romans 5.5, 8; 8.35, 39, 1 John 4.8, 16. God is the genesis of love. He is it’s source. By Him we experience love. God has expressed His love on us so that we might glorify Him. The greatest expression of His love was demonstrated through the gift of Jesus, John 3.16; 1 John 3.16.

Our Father is full of mercy. For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abundant in steadfast love to all who call upon you, Psalm 6.4; 86.5. See also Hebrews 4.14-16; Psalm 103.10-12; Ephesians 1.7-8; 2.4; 3.18-19; Romans 9.23-24; Titus 3.5; and 1 Peter 1.3. As you read these passages, you see the language of abundance. Our Father is not stingy in pouring out His blessings on His children. God has never begrudged any gift to mankind. His mercy is without limit. No one is beyond His saving power.

Mercy is God’s favor that holds back from us what we deserve. In order for God to dispense mercy, we must agree with Him that a more negative treatment should have been justly dealt out. Mercy is “kindness and goodwill toward the miserable and afflicted, joined with a desire to relieve them.”?2

Our Father disciplines. God is grieved when His children fall short. He is displeased with the breach of sanctification. Sanctification is an ongoing process and this is why we should always be confessing, allowing us to continually be forgiven and cleansed. An example of this type of forgiveness is seen in Hebrews 12.1-11. God disciplines us through His word, for our good, so that we may share His holiness. Holiness and righteousness always connect to salvation.

Our Father is transcendant. For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite, Isaiah 57.15. See also Isaiah 55.8-9; Psalm 113.5-6; and John 8.23. Nothing can come close to describing God. Because of this, we must always approach Him with reverence and respect.

Light and It’s Connection to Grace

As we come into the light, we begin to better appreciate God’s abundant grace. While every passage in Scripture has been communicated for a purpose, there are sections that are especially important in helping us understand the basis for our relationship with God. Ephesians 2 is one of those chapters. Only as we walk in the light do we understand the depths of darkness form which we have come.

The message of Ephesians 1-3 is simple. God saved us by the immeasurable riches of His grace….through faith, when we were headed for certain disaster. We must never forget the helpless and hopeless condition we occupied before coming to Jesus. This is explained throughout chapter 2:

2.1 – we were dead in our tresspasses and sin. We didn’t need an ordinary Savior, we needed a great Savior, with great power! By using the language of death, Paul reminds us of the seriousness of our old circumstances and the bleak darkness we dwelt in.

2.2 – we walked according to the ways of the world. As we walked in darkness, we possessed and participated in the same customs, desires, cares, and thoughts as the evil world around us. We followed Satan.

2.3 – we walked in the passions of our flesh. We willfully chose to follow the wrong path. In calling us children of wrath, Paul chooses to emphasize our stubborn and ornery rebellion against God. We rebelled, knowingly and voluntarily, against the loving authority of God.

2.12 – we were once separated from God. Sin separated us from our God, Isaiah 59.1-2.

2.12 – we were once alienated from the commonwealth of Israel. We possessed no citizen rights to heaven.

2.12 – we once had no hope and were without God in the world.

2.11a is important. When the Holy Spirit tells readers to remember, it is communicated in present tense, suggestion continuous action. Even after salvation, we should never forget our awful condition before coming to Christ. Remembrance of this will create a vigorous role in causing us to love Jesus.

It is hard to imagine a bleaker or gloomy picture than what is described in Ephesians 2.1-3. Here, the Spirit portrays the world living in open hostility and rebellion to God. Theirs is a destiny of disaster. It was our destiny. This bleak picture was interrupted by two powerful words in 2.4: But God… Now, in midst of explaining the darkness that enshrouded us, Paul interjects the loving action of God. God made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2.5b-6. The darkness of our sin and the hopelessness of our condition provides the background for the brilliance of His mercy to brightly shine through!

Now, as we walk in the light, we can see the beauty of grace. See how this is communicated in Ephesians 2.4-7. Here, we see the vocabulary of grace:

2.4 – mercy.

2.4 – love.

2.5, 7 – grace.

As you identify these terms, see also the language of abundance.

2.4 – God was rich in mercy.

2.4 – God loved us with a great love.

2.7 – The amount of grace is compared to immeasurable riches.

See how these things are offered to us in abundance. Our God is not small, scanty, sporadic, or meager. God’s love and care for us is infinite. Light reveals that God sympathized with us and pitied us in our lost condition. It was His mercy that relieved us of the penalties that accompanied our sin. In fact, His sympathy for us is exhaustless. His desire to forgive abounds and overflows. Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts, Isaiah 55.6-9. Even though it defies our comprehension as to how God could be so gracious and merciful, He invites us to respond so He can transform us in someone who reflects Him.

As Paul prayed, let us earnestly desire to fulfill Paul’s prayer: According to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God, Ephesians 3.16-19.

Recognition of These Facts Propels our Obedience

Because God has sacrificially loved us by giving us His Son to be the propitiation for our sin, we have been urged to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, Ephesians 4.1. How we walk is explained throughout the rest of Ephesians:

4.11-16 – find and fulfill your role in the body.

4.17-22 – put off the old self, which belongs to your former manner of life.

4.24-32 – put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

5.1-21 – walk in love, imitating God, giving thanks and submitting to once aonther out of reverence for Christ.

5.22-33 – submission to God’s way in marriage.

6.1-9 – submission to God’s design for the way the family functions, and in various relationships in life.

6.10-20 – standing not in our own strength, but God’s.

Each one of these aspects describes what grace motivates us to do. Everything we do in our spiritual walk should be driven by the fact of God’s great love, grace, and mercy for us. God has not arbitrarily ordered commands, just for the sake of keeping commands. There is a higher purpose for it. That is, His expectations are intended to draw us into a deeper relationship with Him. In this way, the closer we draw to Him, the more magnificent the light becomes as it illuminates every step of our journey to heaven.

Questions for Discussion

1. What are the ramifications of viewing God from the extreme position of love?

2. What are the ramifications of viewing God from the extreme position of law?

3. What is the best viewpoint about God that we can take?

4. How can the seven attributes of God discussed here help you in your spiritual walk? Why is viewing God from this perspective so important?

5. Why is it so important to always approach God with reverence and respect? How is this being lost in our culture today?

6. How does the Holy Spirit describe our condition before coming to Christ?

7. Why is it important to remember these facts?

8. What is the vocabulary of grace in 2.4-7? In what quantity were these things given?

9. Why does God work so hard to redeem us? Isaiah 55.6-9.

10. How does grace motivate us to walk in the light? See Ephesians 4-6

Let the earth rejoice; let the many coasts and islands be glad. Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. Fire goes before Him and burns up His foes on every side. His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the LORD — at the presence of the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim His righteousness; all the peoples see His glory. All who serve carved images, those who boast in idols, will be put to shame. All the gods must worship Him. Zion hears and is glad, and the towns of Judah rejoice because of Your judgments, LORD. For You, LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; You are exalted above all the gods. You who love the LORD, hate evil! He protects the lives of His godly ones; He rescues them from the power of the wicked. Light dawns for the righteous, gladness for the upright in heart. Be glad in Yahweh, you righteous ones, and praise His holy name.

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 95; 97-99

Our God is a God of glory and unlimited power. He is mighty and holy. His radiance and unrivaled presence stands second to nothing. He is our God, who has bought us back from the slavery of sin through the blood of His Son. Because of the favor He has shown, we should rise up in praise and wholehearted commitment to love His ways. As we walk in the light, we stand in safety, protected from the evil one, and are free to grow and blossom into His kind of person! Take a few moments today to praise God for His wondrous blessings and the promise of salvation He has given you. Sing praises to the LORD, O you his saints, and give thanks to his holy name, Psalm 30.4

2 Samuel 22.1-7 ESV

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 22-23; PSALM 57

In today’s reading, David refers to God as the horn of his salvation. While that term may sound strange to a modern audience, in David’s time this signified great power and strength. When a horn sprouted on the head of an ox and grew strong like iron, the animal became feared by all his enemies. And so, when David referred to God as the horn of his salvation, he gave praise to God for gaining the victory over his enemies. God is the one who is strong and gets the victory for His people. God was David’s defense (his shield) and his offense (deadly/powerful horn). Here is an abiding principle that should guide our life. God lives to secure and protect His people. This same picture is used in Luke 1.69-71 where Jesus is called the horn of salvation because He uses His power to overcome sin. Jesus was the power that God would use to destroy our spiritual enemies. By sending His Son, God aims to create a righteous and holy people, who live without fear because they trust in Him. We, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days, Luke 1.74-75.

Lesson 11 – Elisha: A Decisive Response to God’s Call

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Introduction:

We are first introduced to Elisha in 1 Kings 19.16, 19-21. This passage lets us in on some very important aspects of the man’s character and faith. Earlier in the chapter, the great prophet Elijah escaped Israel for his life. He soon fell subject to depression and loneliness. He even went so far as to question his effectiveness as God’s prophet. God responded by telling him to get back to work, 19.15. Whether Elijah had previous knowledge of Elisha is not known. There is no indication as to why Elisha should have been called to this office, although we can be certain that God knew the qualities of Elisha.

The story of Elisha is very important as it teaches us a great lesson in decisively serving God. His is a great story of faith and one that has a number of practical applications for a modern audience. The choice that Elisha made in responding to God’s call is worthy of our examination. By his own freewill, he made an unselfish choice that involved great faith and trust in the protection of God. Like Elisha, we have been called to choose. What will we do with our decision? Will we respond decisively?

Elijah Goes to Meet Elisha

When Elijah came, Elisha was going on with life as normal. It is interesting to note that Elisha was not found in the schools of the prophets. He was in the fields plowing. He obviously was not above working and providing for his needs. When Elijah approached, he cast his cloak upon him, 19.19. The cloak would have been made of animal skin and would have been considered a person’s most important piece of clothing. It provided warmth. It could be used as bedding or as a place to sit. Elijah’s actions were done so as to communicate to Elisha that he would be his successor. 2 Kings 2.13 shows that upon Elijah’s being taken into heaven, that the cloak became the property of Elisha.

Elisha immediately responded to the call by leaving his oxen and running after Elijah. At the call of God, he gave up all. He expressed no hesitation in entering the service of God. It should be noted that Elisha did not go home to ask, but to take leave of his parents. 19.20 should not be taken as a pretext for delay.

This was a response to the call of God, and Elisha’s actions are a large statement of faith. By doing so, he renounced the world. He did have something to sacrifice. In 19.19 we read that Elisha was using twelve yoke of oxen to plow. This indicates prosperity. The short glimpse we have indicates that he left behind a home of comfort and happiness. So here he is, in the pursuit of his business, he was called into spiritual service. We must not let the cares of life take us away from the spiritual.

19.21 stands out as far as the completeness of his decision. As he prepared to depart with Elijah, Elisha took the yoke of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the yokes of the oxen and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and assisted him. For Elisha, there would be no worldly entanglements. As he followed Elijah, he would have experienced tremendous change. The life of a prophet was one of discomfort. And the relative safety Elisha enjoyed before was now gone as Elijah lived under the constant threat of Jezebel, who had sworn to kill him. Think about it. Elisha knowingly walked into this. What an incredible demonstration of faith!

We Have Been Called to a Decision. What Will We Do?

Christianity is not just an academic pursuit. Sermons are not just to be heard, but practiced! Scripture is not just about receiving information, but through it God passionately persuades us to be transformed! Christianity is not just a matter of what we think and claim, it is a matter of individual response of the heart to God. It is not about what we profess, it is about what we do, 1 John 3.18, James 1.22. God sacrificed to send Jesus. We’ve not been forced to obey, but been invited. Jesus said, Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light,” Matthew 11.28-30. What will we do with the invitation? Which path will we choose?

Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 7.13-14 presents mankind with only two ways to proceed. We have a choice. We must choose to move forward through the narrow gate. This involves sacrifice. Like Elisha, we must leave worldliness behind. Everyone has something to give up for God. Peter said, But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light, 1 Peter 2.9. Each one of us has been called to be someone special, exceptional, and unique. Our journey with Jesus will be difficult and unpopular. We can’t take the crowd with us. It was Paul who plead, Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 2 Corinthians 6.17.

Like Elisha, we must be decisive. When he killed his oxen, his farming days were finished. Spiritually, there can be no going back. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God, Romans 8.8. We must not be tempted to fall prey to the temptation that we can have things both ways. Jesus urged His disciples to fight the reluctance to break with the world. No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God, Luke 9.62. Jesus had the ability to see this man’s heart, which was divided and unfit for service. We must have our priorities firmly established. Jesus must become the Lord of our life and occupy first place in everything, 1 Peter 3.15; Colossians 1.18.

Paul’s example in Philippians 3 fits in well here. Just like the great apostle, we too must commit ourselves to knowing God, Philippians 3.8-11. When we do this, our need for decisiveness will take care of itself. Is there anything in your life presently that would impede your relationship with God? What happened with Paul committed himself to knowing God? Like Elisha, he left the past behind, Philippians 3.3-7. Like Elisha, Paul embraced his future with hope and faith, Philippians 3.12-14.

Conclusion:

There is so much we can learn from Elisha, as well as other Bible heroes. Let us use their example to move with faith and courage and be decisive in our service to God. We can’t look back. We must not fall prey to doubt or wonder what if? There is only one way for progress. That is, looking and moving ahead.

Which direction are you moving?

Questions for Discussion

1. What was going on the day Elijah came calling on Elisha?

2. List some ways you can prepare now to make a good decision when God calls you into action.

3. What causes us to hesitate when making spiritual decisions?

4. How can we strengthen our commitment to renounce the world?

5. How does the main point of 1 John 3.18 and James 1.22 fit in with today’s lesson?

6. How can 1 Peter 2.9 motivate you while you make spiritual progress?

7. Is there anything in this world that has the ability to hold you back and limit your spiritual progress? If so, what? What are some measures you can take to limit its influence?

8. What did Paul leave behind? See Phlippians 3.3-7.

9. What did Paul gain by knowing Christ? See Philippians 3.8-11.

10. How did Paul embrace his future with hope and faith? See Philippians 3.12-14?

That is, obedience is the evidence of, or fruit, of our salvation. Isn’t that the teaching of Ephesians 2.8-10? We work from grace, not for it. See Titus 2. Grace trains us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives, …zealous for good works, Titus 2.12, 14b. Ultimately, we are justified by faith (Romans 5.1) and our works are a manifestation of that active and growing faith, James 2.21-24.

Recently, in some circles there has been a good amount of consternation concerning my thoughts on obedience post salvation. So much so, that one person has made me the subject of his secret and personal campaign of distortion and slander, sending emails across the country to who anyone or anything he thinks will listen. I’ve been accused of six things:

dividing a congregation that I presently live 1300 miles from, in a city I haven’t resided in for 9 years.

teaching the “grace/fellowship” doctrine or “grace only.”

belittling being saved by works.

belittling fearing God.

teaching that salvation is a matter of only trusting in Christ to save (faith only?).

promoting the idea that grace will save apart from works.

Those are serious charges. It is sad to see those among us who think nothing of throwing around the term “false teacher” and “false doctrine,” with no regard for accuracy or exhibiting the spirit of Christ with those they disagree. I can tell you if I felt compelled to label someone else’s teaching as “false,” I’d be very careful to make sure I knew what I was talking about. And, I’d have the common courtesy to personally contact the person and exhort them before I decided to go public with my accusations. But, alas, this is not the method of operation for some who claim to represent the way of Christ.

This present controversy got started on May 14 after I posted a quote from an acquaintance of mine on Facebook. I thought it was something worthy of consideration, as did ten other persons who “liked” the quote. Here’s my Facebook post:

If no one ever accuses us of excusing sin by our doctrine of grace, perhaps our teaching on grace is different than Paul’s (Ro. 3:8; 6:1). If no one is moved to greater obedience and sanctification by our doctrine of grace, perhaps our teaching on grace is different than Paul’s (Ro. 6:1-23; 8:5-14).

Within 30 minutes, a preacher from North Alabama responded by charging me with minimizing obedience after salvation and used this post as an example. In that article, I quoted an excerpt from Dr. Tim Kimmel’s book called Grace Based Parenting. (I preached a sermon series on parenting last July, and came across those bullet points as to how parents should approach the way they raise their kids.) Those who read the entire post will notice that the main point was the need for a positive and encouraging atmosphere which encourages spiritual growth inside the local church. I felt Kimmel’s points worked in well with what I was trying to communicate. Looking back, I should have reworked Kimmel’s writing (like I have in the updated version of the original post) to better express myself. But, since Kimmel is associated with denominational churches that teach Calvinism, I have been tagged as a Calvinist.

Well, simply stated, I’m no Calvinist. In fact, I’m very far from it. And, lest there be any doubt, just click here and read through all 30 articles I’ve written on the necessity of obedience post salvation. And, to be fair, here’s a link to the 37 articles I’ve written that have a connection to the subject of grace. It should not take you long to see where I stand on the matter and that the charges being made about me are false.

And, just in case some of my readers are wondering as to why on the evening of May 15, I decided to pull down the Facebook post that got all this started, it is simply because I felt the discussion took a direction that was not becoming of the spirit of Christ. It was certainly not pulled down out of any fear or worry about what some might think of my teaching. It’s my Facebook wall, and I reserve the right (as do all Facebook users) to choose what I put up and what I take down.

Also, comments made by Steve Wolfgang in that Facebook thread prompted me to call him on the afternoon of May 15. While Bro. Wolfgang and I obviously have our disagreements, our conversation was generally positive. And, he passed along some very sound advice that I needed to hear. Additionally, I took into consideration Gary Johnsen’s comments about his dislike of the term “grace based vs. obedience based.” So, after prayer and a night of “sleeping on it,” I decided to update my original post. I think it expresses my point much more clearly. Instead of viewing my actions with suspicion, my critics should be relieved and joyous to see that I have sought to correct what was so troubling to them. Which, by the way, are writers not entitled to update their material? Who doesn’t do that? Are those we disagree with somehow not allowed to do so?

Here’s something else that’s been on my mind lately. And that is, the “concern” being bantered about in some quarters about consulting denominational reference material etc. In my experience, this is usually brought up when listeners hear communication they disagree with. They see a certain source and then everything is viewed only through the prism of denominational error and summarily dismissed. While it may be spoken or unspoken, some are guided by the idea that if the Baptists or Methodists said it, it must be wrong. And, if a denominational source is used, it is assumed the writer must agree with them or be headed in that direction. Really? How far down that road do we want to go? Consistency would seem to demand that several of my preaching brethren need to have a book burning! Is everything our denominational friends say and do wrong? When they communicate valid points that agree with the Biblical message, are we to say we should not use those references, lest someone get the wrong idea? I thought truth was truth – no matter who communicated it. (I did receive some good advice on this the other day reminding me that it is important to make it clear that we may not agree with everything our denominational friends write, etc.)

So, finally, what do I believe concerning obedience post baptism? Simply put, our obedience is the natural result of a transformed life that has been crucified with Christ, Romans 6.1-6; Galatians 2.20. It is our heartfelt response to God.

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.

Psalm 5.1-8 ESV

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 5, 38; 41-42

It has been said that Psalm 5 was written on the second morning after David’s flight from Absalom. Here, David provides a model for us in how we are to fully surrender to God and count our desires as secondary. Although David experienced seasons of sin, the entirety of his life could be viewed as a passionate pursuit for God. No matter how fiery his trials had been, David had every reason to rejoice. He knew God would always lead him in the right direction, as He will do for us. God wants us to succeed. God works to make our way smooth and straight. God will surround us with His favor so we can be safe from those who work against us. Have you given your heart to God? As long as we think we can succeed by our own efforts, we will never pursue God with passion. Only in our weakness will God’s strength be made full in us! According to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, Ephesians 3.16.

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 26; 40; 58; 61-62; 64

In today’s psalm, David asks God to clear his name of the false charges made against him by his enemies. Slander has always been the work of fools, Proverbs 10.18. No matter what others say, when we walk in integrity, examine our actions, and remain faithful, we can trust God to rise to the occasion and be gracious to us. He will protect our character and uphold our name. When we walk with the Lord, our steps are never precarious. We stand on level ground and move forward in constant trust in Him. O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me! Psalm 40.11.

Besides, your father is expert in war; he will not spend the night with the people. Behold, even now he has hidden himself in one of the pits or in some other place. And as soon as some of the people fall at the first attack, whoever hears it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.’ Then even the valiant man, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will utterly melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and that those who are with him are valiant men. But my counsel is that all Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, as the sand by the sea for multitude, and that you go to battle in person. So we shall come upon him in some place where he is to be found, and we shall light upon him as the dew falls on the ground, and of him and all the men with him not one will be left. If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we shall drag it into the valley, until not even a pebble is to be found there.” And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.”

2 Samuel 17.7-14 ESV

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 16-18

Hushai was the friend of David, 1 Chronicles 27.33. After David fled, Hushai approached the king’s son and pledged loyalty to him through flattery, 16.16-19. As Absalom sought counsel on how to eliminate his father, he first sought advice from Ahithophel. Then Hushai was consulted. Hushai appealed to Absalom through pride and visions of glory. The picture of being the leader of a giant army that would swoop down in great victory over his father was just too enticing for Absalom. Without delay he decided to follow Hushai’s advice. Had Absalom listened to the Advice of Ahithophel, it was very likely that David would have been killed. But, God was at work. Hushai found Absalom’s greatest weakness. Absalom’s vanity led to his quick demise. We need to be aware of the subtleness of pride. Satan will always work through it to bring about our downfall. We must resist any visions of personal grandeur and live for the glory of God. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, Romans 12.3.

Psalm 3 ESV

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 3-4; 12-13, 28,55

What others mean for evil, God can intend for good. Psalm 3 is a hymn of individual lament. It paints for us a clear picture of what triumphant faith looks like when it is tested in the fires of adversity. In the midst of a terrible ordeal, brought on by his sin with Bathsheba, David comes to God with absolute trust – believing that God would rescue Him. Every personal trial teaches believers to trust God more fully. When you encounter trials, remember that God is Lord over your life. He will always work for His glory and the good of His people. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one, Ephesians 6.16.

And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!” But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.” But he would not listen to her. He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.” Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves, for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went. And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house. When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.

2 Samuel 13.15-21 ESV

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 13-15

Just before today’s reading, the text reveals the awful story of Amnon and Tamar. Amnon was the first son of David, 2 Samuel 3.2. His unbridled lust led him to rape his sister and then banish her to a life of isolation. Verse 21 records David’s reaction. While he was very angry, it appears that this was as far as David went. Could this be due to his credibility on sexual integrity having been eroded with his recent adultery with Bathsheba? Amnon’s rape of Tamar was just the beginning of a very difficult time for David. Amnon would later be killed by Absalom, 13.28. Then Absalom began a period of rebellion, in which he publicly raped David’s wives, attempted to depose David, and wound up dead, 2 Samuel 14-15. These were dark days for David, all brought on by sin. While David was forgiven, the ramifications from his actions did not go away. We need to always be aware of the danger of sin. It will lead us down a long and difficult path. Stand strong. Stand firm. Resist temptation. Glorify God. Take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm, Ephesians 6.13.

Psalm 32.1-5 ESV

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 32; 51; 86; 122

Concealed sin is like a cancer – it eats away and destroys us from within. Until David found the courage to deal with his sin, his life was slowly draining away. Imagine the scene. Here is the great king of Israel now living in the shadows of his own palace. Because of his direct disobedience to God, sin had shriveled him into something he was never destined to be. If you’ve been trapped by Satan’s snare, there is absolutely no way you can release yourself. You cannot undo what has been done. The first step in being released from sin is to admit failure. We must be willing to admit our spiritual poverty.

The aim of confession is not to erase or ignore the consequences of sin, it is to restore joy. Secret sin, buried in the past, disturbs the present. Confessed sin, exhumed from the past, brings peace to the present. This is what David learned, and, with God’s help, this is what we will learn as well. When we get the matter in the open before God, we find immediate relief. Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy, Proverbs 28.13.

Lesson 9 – Light Comes Through Total Trust in God

Sunday, May 20, 2012

Introduction:

It has been said that after 8th century conqueror Charlemagne overcame the Saxons, he compelled them to become Christians. They agreed under one condition that could easily be seen at their baptism. The Saxons were each immersed holding their right arms out of the water. They wanted it to be clear that they were being “Christianized” with the exception of their fighting arm.

Throughout history, many Christians have struggled with commitment. Modern life has its share of distractions. Education, career, family, and recreation place the strongest of demands on us. Cultural norms on morality and tolerance impact our spiritual life. Like the Israelites during the days of Elijah, many try to achieve a balancing act between Christianity and the world, 1 Kings 18.21. Because of this, some Christians still limp and stumble with darkness in their life that should have been eradicated long ago.

In Christianity, surrender precedes any victory. The more we surrender to Christ, the more that His light will illuminate our life. Coming to fulfill the expectations in Matthew 16.24 is a lifelong challenge. Paul’s actions should be our goal. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me, Galatians 2.20. Self surrender has been likened to taking a blank piece of paper, signing our name at the bottom, and letting God fill it in as He wills. Are we up to the challenge?

Knowing Christ

Philippians 3 is one of the most celebrated parts of the New Testament. In it, Paul speaks of his life dedication to knowing Jesus. Before coming to Christ, Paul had lived his life as a Jew. Because of his works of the law, he would have been regarded as superior in his standing with God. He was a God-fearing; law abiding Jew. At one time, he placed his trust in these achievements for his salvation. But, after becoming a Christian, he realized all his works and achievements did not make him right with God, but actually hindered him from being right with God. Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ, 3.7. Now, he saw the value of Jesus and that salvation came only through Him – what he once thought was gain, now was counted for loss. So, Paul abandoned all for Jesus.

It has been said that 3.4-7 is a record of what Paul lost and that 3.8-11 is a description of what Paul gained in Christ. What did he gain?

3.8 – knowledge of Christ.

3.9 – righteousness of Christ.

3.10 – power of Christ.

3.10 – fellowship of Christ.

3.11 – glory of Christ.

How did Paul gain these things? It was through his total trust and commitment to God. Jesus Christ must become first in our plans, affections, time, finances, conversations, and decisions. The person who puts Jesus first will find Jesus with him in the end. If we offer Jesus 2nd place, we offer Him no place. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me, Matthew 10.37-38. Jesus is not valued at all unless He is valued above all.

Paul’s teaching in 2 Corinthians 6 is also important.

6.1-2 – do not receive the grace of God in vain….behold now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

6.4-10 – total dedication to Christ brought hardship, but also wonderful things as the apostles learned to fully depend on God. All Christians need to develop this same kind of dedication.

6.14-18 – We cannot be pleasing to God and divide our affections with Him and ourself, our past, or the world.

7.1 – We are expected to bring holiness to completion in the fear of God.

To be successful, we must sanctify Jesus as the Lord of our heart. Honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts, 1 Peter 3.15. We can’t take what we want with Jesus and leave out the rest. We must not attempt to take Jesus as our Savior and refuse Him as Lord and Master of our life. Since He is Lord, he has the sovereign right to command and we must obey. We most follow through without charge or reservation, regardless of how foolish the command may seem or regardless of the cost.

As the light penetrates our life, this becomes who we are. Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him, Colossians 3.17. Heaven must now dominate our thought pattern, decisions, and our lifestyle. If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, Colossians 3.1-2.

We Need Conviction

Conviction is what we do about what we believe. Neutrality is certainly not the need of the hour – but yet that is what is applauded in our culture. Wendell Winkler has said, Conviction, not consensus; nerve, not neutrality is the need of the hour! We are living in a transient and “butterflyish” age.?1 Despite our changing world with its constantly evolving ideas, there are some things that remain unmoved and unchanged.

James 1.17 – God – With Him there is no variation or shifting shadow.

Hebrews 13.8 – Jesus – He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

1 Peter 1.22-23, 25 – The Bible is living and abiding and remains forever.

Hebrews 12.28 – the Church is a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

As Christians, when it comes to our convictions and godly lives, we must remain unmoved. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain, 1 Corinthians 15.58. A lack of conviction will lead to our spiritual demise. We must remain true to our beliefs no matter what. Walking in the light gives us courage and confidence to hold the line against the strongest resistance.

Conviction involves acting on our beliefs. It is more than just a firm belief – it requires something from us. In Acts 4.18-20 we read, So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard. What was the force behind the apostles’ preaching? Conviction. They just could not help telling others about Jesus – no matter what the authorities said. What was the result?

4.29 – they prayed for more boldness!

4.30 – they prayed for God to work His signs and wonders so more would see the power of God and come to a knowledge of the gospel.

The same was true for the Thessalonians. In his first letter, Paul said they were fully convicted of the teachings of God, 1.5-7. They were convinced of the resurrection and the return of Jesus. This led them to change their lives and fight compromise.

In 2 Samuel 23.11-12 the story of one of David’s mighty men is told. Shammah stood against the Philistines when everyone else fled. He took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory, 23.12. We need more persons like Shammah. That is, those who will stand their ground, defend God’s truth, and glorify God.

We need Christians who will not compromise for convenience. It is better to die with conviction than to live with compromise.?2 We must not surrender for expediency or given into situationalism for the sake of being accepted. When we walk in the light, we can stand in quiet confidence – knowing that the way of God is better.

Christians have been instructed to:

Titus 2.12 – live righteously and godly.

James 1.27 – remain unspotted from the world.

Romans 12.2 – we must not refuse to be transformed.

Walking in the light will involve our commitment to living according to the highest moral ethics. This should be seen in every relationship. It should be seen in our home, in the church, our community, and at work.

Conclusion:

Coming into the light involves full dedication to Jesus Christ. There can be no reservation in our commitment. We must be singularly focused to the task of setting aside our entire self and allow the interests of Jesus to dictate our life. David said, all that is within me, bless His holy name, Psalm 103.1. There can be no variance in our allegiance. Any corner of our heart that had been reserved for self, Satan, or sin must be destroyed. We need to be immersed or absorbed in our spiritual pursuit, 1 Timothy 4.15.

Questions for Discussion

1. What were some of Paul’s credentials as a superior Jew? See Philippians 3.4-6.

2. Paul lost some things as a result of coming to Christ, what did he gain? See Philippians 3.8-11.

3. How does 2 Corinthians 6 illustrate the urgency of our spiritual commitment?

4. As Paul sought to “know” Jesus, what types of hardships did he endure? See 2 Corinthians 6.4-10. What positives did he gain? How can this help us in our spiritual walk?

5. What does it mean to set Jesus as the Lord of our life? See 1 Peter 3.15.

6. How would you define conviction?

7. What type of change did conviction bring for the Thessalonians? See 1 Thessalonians 1.

8. How does 1 Corinthians 15.58 serve as an inspiration for New Testament Christians today?

9. Discuss the expectations for righteousness found in Titus 2.12 and James 1.27. What can we do to keep these principles at the forefront of our mind?

10. What are some ways you can become more absorbed in your spiritual pursuit, 1 Timothy 4.15?

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 10; 1 CHRONICLES 19; PSALM 20

God leads His people into victory when prayers expressing total reliance on Him are delivered. Christians must always look to the Lord when they are confronted with conflict. The battle is the Lord’s. See 2 Chronicles 20.15. For those who trust in themselves and their possessions, defeat comes. But, when those who trust in God rise up against the enemy and stand firm, victory is theirs. As you go forward in life, move in firm trust in God’s sovereignty – even against formidable opposition. God is God, and victory belongs to Him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God, to help us and to fight our battles, 2 Chronicles 32.8.

But so are homosexual activists who feel the President did not go far enough. So what can I add to the discussion?

I’m sure your Facebook and Twitter feed is going crazy like mine. It seems as if everyone is sounding off with remarks on President Obama’s statement that he supports gay marriage. Like many, what he said Wednesday did not surprise me. And the reaction I’m seeing this morning as I read internet posts on both sides of the issue is not surprising either. Bible believing Christians are rightly outraged. But so are homosexual activists who feel the President did not go far enough.

So what can I add to the discussion? Scripture is very clear on the matter. Here are two passages that should sum up the issue:

Genesis 2.24: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

1 Corinthians 6.9-10: The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

While there are many others to consider, these passages sufficiently communicate God’s will on the matter. 1) God designed marriage to take place for male and female persons. 2) Homosexuality is just one in a long list of sins that will keep one outside heaven.

These passages and principles are communicated passionately by New Testament Christians everywhere. But across the country, the message is being rejected – especially by those under the age of 40. Check out a Gallup Survey I found last night:

In 1996, an overwhelming majority of Americans opposed gay marriage, 68% to 23%.

In 2012, a slight majority of Americans believe gay marriage should be valid, 50% to 48%.

What explains the trend? What is the heart of the issue? Like every other sin, homosexuality is a symptom of a spiritual heart problem. In his blog, Collin Hansen explains the thinking on homosexuality that a growing number of Americans are embracing:

God made homosexuals that way.

He wouldn’t deny them their natural desires.

They should not have to explain themselves to anyone.

In essence, people have turned their natural desires into an idol. This god now rules the throne of their heart and only lip service is paid to the Almighty God. This is not a new problem and it is not only related to homosexuality. In Romans 1.20-21, Paul taught that all sin begins with what we make of the glory of God. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, Romans 1.21a. This is the starting point for all the world’s evil. When Paul begins to describe the progression of sin, he does not first deal with sexual sin (1.24-27), or the list of 21 sins in 1.29-31. He deals first with the fundamental problem: what do we make of the glory of God? Do we magnify it? Do we treasure it? Or, do we belittle it? Prefer other things and exchange it for created things?

Will we honor God as God? Will we trust Him enough to bring our fleshly desires (heterosexual or homosexual) in line with His expectations? If not, Paul explains the effects:

It makes us rely on human wisdom, 1.22a. (Read President Obama’s statement and see the human logic on display.)

It makes us foolish, 1.22b.

We exchange the glory of God for images, 1.23. May I stress that self is the biggest image/idol we pay homage to.

The growing tide on the issue of sin (not just homosexuality) can be turned if we will help people replace self with God on the throne of their heart. Only then will heterosexuals and homosexuals be committed to keeping their sexual desires in line with God’s divine expectations. That is, sexual expression is valid only inside the confines of a marriage this is comprised of male and female.

In the mean time, let us commit to reaching out to the lost in a spirit of love and compassion. Being ugly about the matter and making homosexuality come across as the worst sin will not help – it will simply slam doors shut. Some will reject God’s message. If they do, it’s not on us – it’s on them. Our job is to patiently and passionately teach and let the chips fall where they may.

How committed are you in keeping God on the throne of your heart?

Psalm 50.16-23 ESV

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 50; 53; 60; 75

It matters little as to what we say compared to what we do. Have you ever seen someone whose heart is far away from God but yet possesses an ability to quote Scripture with ease? Our actions reveal the condition of our heart. Hypocrisy is never overlooked by God. His silence should never be interpreted as approval or indifference. God holds out from immediate punishment to give us time to repent, 2 Peter 3.9. His silence will not always last – a time of judgment will come. Does your speech match your actions? Have you given your heart to God? As I live, declares the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways, Ezekiel 33.11.

Lesson 10 – Elijah: The Great Prophet of Israel

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Introduction and Background

We are first introduced to Elijah in 1 Kings 17. God raised him up to announce impending judgment over Israel. Over the previous fourteen years, Ahab and his wife Jezebel had been heavy proponents of Baal worship throughout the northern kingdom. Ahab (874-852 BC) was the son of Omri, who according to secular history was one of the more notable kings of Israel. He is mentioned in the annuals of history in other nations at the time as a good trade partner. Omri and Ahab did much evil in the sight of the Lord, 1 Kings 16.25-33. His wife Jezebel was the daughter of the king of Sidon. Theirs was a marriage of political convenience as Israel valued Sidon as an important trade partner. But, spiritually, the nation was dead. Ahab’s window for self judging and moving back toward God had passed. Throughout Biblical history, God has given mankind time to repent before exacting judgment against them. See 1 Corinthians 11.31 and 2 Peter 3.9-10. God was now going to act against Israel by bringing in a severe famine in hopes of turning their hearts back to Him, 17.1.

Elijah’s name means “Yahweh is my God.” By promising a drought, this fell completely in line with God’s warning about what would happen if His people forsook Him. Take care lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and serve other gods and worship them; then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and he will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and you will perish quickly off the good land that the LORD is giving you, Deuteronomy 11.16-17. See also Leviticus 26.18-19 and Deuteronomy 28.23-24. The promise of a drought was God’s direct challenge to Baal. Baal was a Phoenician god who was viewed as the storm god. Baal was also a fertility god. He was also known as the god of fire. Archaeologists have found depictions of Baal holding a thunderbolt in his hand. Baal worship included ritual prostitution, human sacrifice, as well as lascivious acts between male and female prostitutes. God hated Baal worship and considered it spiritual adultery. God used Elijah as a prophet to communicate His displeasure with His people.

Elijah’s Time of Preparation – 1 Kings 17

Elijah’s story is told primarily in 1 Kings 17-19. Chapter 17 may be viewed as a time of growth for Elijah. After communicating with Ahab in 17.1, God immediately sent Elijah to Cherith, which was east of the Jordan River. By sending Elijah here, God used this time (over two years, 18.1) as an opportunity to teach him that He would provide him with his needs. While Elijah was hidden away from Ahab, God built his faith and prepared him for what would happen on Mount Carmel. Through very personal experiences, Elijah would learn that God is the only source of life, fertility, and blessing.

After dwelling in Cherith, where he was fed by ravens, God told him to go to Zarephath. Zarephath was located in Phoenicia – the home of Baal worship. As these events occur, the drought is continually worsening. As Elijah approaches the village, he comes into contact with a widow who was gathering sticks to start a fire in order to cook her last meal. Widows would have been the first to run out of food during drought conditions, and there was no more way for her to provide for the needs of herself and her son. Elijah commanded her to give him water and prepare a meal for him. He promised that her food supply of flour and jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth, 18.14. Think of the message being communicated to the woman in this story. Here, in the homeland of Baal, the local god was powerless to provide for her most basic needs. God stands in unique contrast, who was more than able to care for the widow and her son.

Some time later, the widows son became very ill and died. Through the power of God, Elijah prayed and asked God to raise her son from the dead. 1 Kings 17.22 is the first restoration of a dead person recorded in Scripture. Throughout 17.17-24 we see the intimate relationship Elijah had with God. His heartfelt prayer, 17.21, was heard and answered by God, 17.22. Throughout this process, Elijah was learning about the great power of God as well as the power of prayer. God was communicating to the widow as well as Elijah that He alone has power over life – not Baal.

Elijah on Mount Carmel – 1 Kings 18

At the beginning of 1 Kings 18, the drought was inside its third year. It was especially severe in Samaria, most likely due to the fact that Ahab and Jezebel lived there. Elijah, who had been dwelling in Zarephath, was told to go down to meet Ahab. His mission in spelled out in 18.19 as he told Ahab to gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table. Mount Carmel was located geographically between Israel and Phoenicia and was regarded as Baal’s sacred dwelling place. The mountain often was shrouded in clouds and had many storms filled with lighting and thunder. The ancients believed this was a sign that deity dwelt there. Mount Carmel was regarded as “the garden land” and was famous for its fertility.

The scene described in 18.17-40 is most certainly dramatic. Elijah stands as one against the 450 prophets of Baal. Probably hundreds, if not thousands, gathered since he summoned all Israel to Mount Carmel. In the minds of many, Baal would have had a distinct advantage in this contest. Elijah knew that this victory would require a supernatural act of God. He moves forward in faith – publicly challenging the prophets. You call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God. And all the people answered, ‘It is well spoken,’ 1 Kings 18.24. The prophets of Baal did as Elijah instructed and for six hours they cried out…to no avail. As they cried out, Elijah mocked them, 18.27. By doing this, Elijah was exposing Baal’s limited power.

Finally, at the time of the afternoon sacrifice, Elijah called the people to him and rebuilt the altar of the Lord. When all was ready, he prayed a prayer for God’s glory: O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back, 1 Kings 18.36-37. God immediately revealed Himself. The Israelites turned back to God and demonstrated repentance through their obedience to the Law by killing the false prophets, 18.40.

For the 21st Century Christian

There are times of life where God prepares us to carry out His plan. Elijah’s experiences in chapter 17 were difficult at best. God called him to stand up to Ahab, announce judgment, and then depart into the wilderness. Elijah immediately responded. As he descends into the wilderness east of the Jordan he has taken no personal provisions. As the drought worsens, his personal circumstances would have been very stressful. But yet, God used this time in his life to teach him to rely on Him. Not even the ravens feed their young, but God commanded them to feed Elijah. Day by day they brought him food. Elijah took his water by the nearby brook, until the lengthy drought caused it to dry up. This would have been a time of great patience by Elijah – trusting in God for the very basics of life. As you endure difficult circumstances and times of trial in your life, view the situation as an opportunity for God to strengthen and establish your faith. God will work through various means to teach us dependence on Him. How much do we trust? Had Elijah not been gone through the times of difficult training in 1 Kings 17, he may not have been prepared to serve as he did in chapter 18.

We must make a decision. 1 Kings 18 identifies the problem Israel had. Elijah asked the people, How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him, but if Baal, then follow him, 18.21. At issue in this story is not so much that Israel wanted to reject Yahweh and choose Baal as that it was they wanted to serve both Baal and Yahweh. Elijah calls for an either/or decision. Isn’t the same necessary for us? We have been called to be decisive and choose God. No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other, Matthew 6.24a. But yet we often struggle. Too many struggle with leaving worldly desires behind and wholeheartedly committing to Christ. There are a number of Scriptures which urge us to follow through:

Luke 9.57-62 – No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God, 9.62.

James 4.4 – You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

2 Corinthians 6.1-2 – Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

Finally, our lack of decisiveness is an indication of lukewarmness, of which the Lord is extremely displeased, Revelation 3.16-18.

We must walk in faith and obedience, just like Elijah. Elijah proved his faith in God by living it out. While the situation he faced may have been fraught with fear, he responded with tremendous trust. Every time we move forward in faith – God will stand behind us. We will reap wonderful rewards. To those who live by faith, eternal life is promised, Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life, Revelation 2.10. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead, James 2.24, 26.

Questions for Discussion

1. What does Elijah’s name mean?

2. Describe the pagan god Baal.

3. What can we learn about God’s patience as he gave Ahab fourteen years to repent?

4. What was God’s purpose for sending Elijah to Cherith and Zarephath?

5. Describe Elijah’s growing relationship with God as seen in 17.17-24.

6. What was the principle problem with Israel as described in 18.21?

7. How did Elijah’s mocking Baal expose the god’s limited power?

8. How did Israel demonstrate repentance in 18.40?

9. What should be our perspective as we endure trials?

10. What are some practical measures we can take to grow our faith?

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 8-9; 1 CHRONICLES 18

I must confess that as I did my daily devotional this morning, a short note in my Bible software program really spoke to me. And, I’m sure that if this is something I need to hear, there may be others who could benefit. 2 Samuel 3.36 says, everything that the king did pleased all the people. And today’s verse provides us with an explanation as to why this was so. David’s first priority was to please God. He did what was right, let the chips fall where they may, and trusted that God and people would respect his convictions. When we seek justice, equity, and righteousness, the respect of others will come. Work on strengthening your commitment to please God and spend less time devising ways to become accepted in the public eye. So we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts, 1 Thessalonians 2.4b.

We can never go wrong trusting in the ways of God. How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments! Psalm 119.9-10.

You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord GOD! And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord GOD! Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. Therefore you are great, O LORD God. And you, O LORD, became their God. And now, O LORD God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you.

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 7; 1 CHRONICLES 17

In today’s reading, David praised God for His wonderful blessings and the making of a covenant with Him. Even though David was not allowed to build the temple, God showed His favor on him with something far greater. God promised to establish his throne forever. This promise was ultimately carried out through Jesus, who now reigns for eternity. David’s praise is notable and is indicative of his wholehearted commitment to God. His trust in God led to wonderful blessings. Let David’s example motivate you to greater devotion in your own service to God. Always trust in God’s providence and purpose for your life. He will never lead you astray. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours, Psalm 86.8.

Lesson 9 – Mary: The Mother of Jesus

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Introduction:

Not much is known about the background of the mother of Jesus. Mary came from a poor family in the Galilean city of Nazareth. Her father was either Heli or Jacob. Born in the tribe of Judah and in the lineage of David, she was in the royal line. The genealogical account in Luke seems to trace her family history, while the one in Matthew shows us the lineage of Joseph. We do know that Mary was related to Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist.

In this lesson, we will examine the reference points in Scripture that mention Mary. What can we learn from her life? How did she walk by faith?

At the Birth of Jesus

Around 5 BC, Mary became engaged to Joseph, who was a carpenter by trade. Luke 1.26 records the story of when Gabriel was sent from God to Nazareth to Mary. She was told that she had found favor with God, 1.30, and that she would conceive in her womb and bear a son and call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end, 1.31-33. As we continue reading Luke’s account, we get just a little picture of Mary’s inner thoughts and feelings at being the birth mother of the Son of God.

While at first she may have been afraid as she tried to discern what the angel meant by telling her she had been favored by the Lord, 1.29, we see her logically thinking through the situation in 1.34: How will this be, since I am a virgin? This question should not be viewed as a lack of faith as much as it should be seen as her trying to understand the possibility of conception without her ever having known a man. Her answer in 1.38 is amazing. After Gabriel explained how this would happen she simply said, Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. What faith! What trust! No arguing. No doubting. Just simple trust in the Lord. Mary’s high character and faith are on display here.

Matthew’s account tells this story from a different perspective. That is, the outward or public account. As news leaked out that she was with child, she would have been subjected to shame and suspicion. She was already engaged to Joseph. In the Jewish culture, the engagement process lasted around 10-12 months. Unfaithfulness during this time would have been considered adultery, Deuteronomy 22.25-28. In Matthew 1.18-19 we observe Joseph’s actions. We get a picture of his reaction as Mary would have to endure the bitter humiliation of telling him she was with child. Joseph could have reported her to the authorities. She could have been put to death, Leviticus 20.10. But, Joseph was kind, tender, and merciful. He was a just man, 1.19. He was not willing to put her to shame. Rather, he intended to dissolve their relationship and restore her to her family. This had to be a great trial to both of them. She was innocent. He did not believe her, but moved without behaving rashly or harshly. This says volumes about the character of Joseph.

In Matthew 1.20, an angel appeared to Joseph inside a dream and told him the truth. Joseph did not need to doubt her character and virtue. The child she had was a creation of divine power. Isn’t it great to see God’s protection here? God will guard our reputation. Christians may be assailed by slander and the circumstances may appear to be against us. But yet, in due time, God will vindicate our character and save us from ruin. It was David who said, Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday, Psalm 37.5-6.

After the angel visited, Joseph took Mary as his wife, Matthew 1.24-25. When the time came, Mary gave birth, Luke 2.7. She witnessed the visit of the shepherds, Luke 2.15-20. As these things occurred Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart, Luke 2.19. At some point before Jesus’ second birthday she witnessed the visit of the Magi, Matthew 2.2-12, and the fled with Joseph to Egypt to avoid Herod – who intended to kill Jesus. Neither Joseph or Mary appear again in Scripture until Luke 2.41-52, when Jesus stayed behind in the temple. After finding Jesus there, his parents accepted his explanation realizing He was the Son of God. Luke 2.51-52 says that after this Jesus subjected Himself to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart, Luke 2.51.

In the Gospels

We next read about Mary in John’s gospel at the wedding in Cana. Mary is mentioned here as she asked Jesus to use His power to meet the crisis as the host ran out of wine. Jesus told her that His hour has not yet come, 2.4. The record goes on to show that Jesus did turn water into wine – thus working His first recorded miracle.

We also see Mary mentioned in Matthew 12.46-47 when she and her other children came to visit Jesus. This event is also recorded in Mark 3.21, 31 and Luke 8.19-21. The purpose of their visit has not been revealed by the inspired writer. Speculation is rampant as to what prompted Jesus to say what He did on this occasion. Some have suggested that Mary must have feared for Jesus as the multitudes pressed on Him seeking healing, etc. Jesus said that the bond between Himself and His disciples were stronger than family ties.

By this time, it is believed that Joseph had passed away. Post Luke 2.51-52, Joseph is no longer mentioned in any occurrence in Scripture.

At the Cross and Beyond

Was Mary the only one inside her family who believed that Jesus was the Messiah? Even though all appeared to be lost as He hung on the cross, she stood there – getting as close as she could. Imagine the pain she must have felt during those six agonizing hours as she was Jesus slowly and painfully die. Her suffering had been prophesied. Simeon said that Jesus had been appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed, Luke 2.34-35. She must have endured her incredible pain through tremendous faith.

We last see Mary in Acts 1.14 as she takes her place among the worshippers. We can only imagine her joy as she realized that her Son had been resurrected from the dead. As we observe the Acts account it is important to note that she worshipped Jesus and was not an object of worship herself.

Matthew 13.55-56 and Mark 6.3 give us details on Jesus’ physical family. He had four brothers and unnamed sisters. James and Judas would become prominent leaders in the church and each would author epistles. Details concerning Joses and Simon have been left out of the divine record.

Conclusion

Mary walked by faith. Her example is seen throughout her life. She was an ordinary woman used by the Lord for an extraordinary purpose. Her willingness to be used in God’s plan should be commended. We need to have a humble and submissive spirit like Mary. We too must endure our struggles with faithfulness. And, we must learn to love Jesus with all our heart.

Lesson 8 – Chasing Away the Darkness

Sunday, May 6, 2012

Introduction:

You know the feeling. It starts deep down inside, and as it grows your stomach turns and anxiety builds. It’s the realization that you’ve fallen short…again. Satan seeks out our weaknesses and effectively exploits them to the fullest. And now, the guilt. The constant questioning, if only I had… Think of the dread of coming to worship services and thinking if these people knew half the things I struggle with, they’d run me out of here. Many obey the gospel of Christ and do well initially. But then, they find themselves falling back into the same habits they had before their relationship with Christ. After they succumb, then comes the guilt. This time it is even worse. Sometimes the guilt is almost overpowering and younger Christians are tempted to give up.

Sin is a terrible thing. The Hebrew writer likened it to a great weight that ties us down, Hebrews 12.1. It can paralyze our spiritual progress and shackle us with guilt. When we begin to compare ourselves with the perfect example of holiness, Jesus, it can feel even worse. When Peter finally realized who Jesus really was, he responded, Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord, Luke 5.8. When we begin to understand sin for what it is, the burden may feel overwhelming. I wonder if this is some of the thought process of those who were compelled to obey the gospel on the day of Pentecost. What a powerful, passionate sermon Peter delivered! As he concluded his words, Peter delivered the painful reality to his audience. The Jews had crucified the Son of God, Acts 2.36. When this realization came crashing down upon his listeners, verse 37 says many were urgently asking, Brethren, what shall we do? They understood they were guilty of their sin and wanted a way to be forgiven. Peter answers their question in verses 38-42 and the record says about 3000 souls were added to the church that day. The way out of sin is through Christ. God works to pardon the sin of all people. To those who have never obeyed, like those mentioned in Acts 2, they must obey the gospel of Christ. To the ones who are already Christians, they must stand ready to confess their sin and seek God’s forgiveness, 1 John 1.8-10.

So how do we chase away the darkness, especially when it seems to be all around during our moments of weakness? In today’s lesson we’ll discuss some helpful things to consider to make you more effective as you walk in the light.

Three Things We Can Do With Our Sin

I once read that there are three things we can do with sin:

We can resolve to never sin again. If we do this, we set ourselves up for failure. This is impossible. See 1 John 1.8.

We can let sin make us a coward. This is what happened to Judas. Upon realization of the terrible consequences of his scheme, Matthew 27.3-5 tells us he went out and hanged himself. He could have faced his sin through confessing it to God. Had Judas humbly approached God seeking forgiveness, he would have been forgiven. Instead, Judas now has all eternity to deal with the regret of his sin. Sin turned Judas into a coward.

Since resolving to never sin and not facing our sin are ways leading to defeat, we must learn from our sin. This is the third and most profitable option. It is what Peter did. After suffering a crushing spiritual defeat by denying Jesus three times, Matthew 26.69-75, the apostle sought God’s forgiveness and picked himself up. A mere fifty days after the resurrection, Peter preached the greatest sermon of his life on Pentecost. There were over 3000 persons who obeyed the gospel that day. Toward the end of his life, Peter would write: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 1 Peter 1:3-4.

Learning from our sin is essential in chasing away the darkness. Jason Hardin identifies seven valuable lessons we can learn after we sin:

Anger does not give us a license to sin.

Past victories do not excuse future sins.

Details matter to God.

Positive physical results does not mean God is pleased.

God’s word must properly be applied.

Sorrow and repentance do not always remove the consequences of our actions.

We are always in desperate need of God’s grace and mercy.?1

How to Chase Away the Darkness

Chasing away the darkness starts by dealing with our emotions. We can let our setbacks and failures paralyze us. Here are three suggestions on how to deal with our emotions, so we can move away from inaction and begin to move toward the light.

Remember that human perfection is not attainable. After our obedience to the gospel, there will be occasion to sin – and we will give into it from time to time. Satan plays a role in this. He plays to our weaknesses. I believe he exerts more effort on Christians – he wants their soul back. After a few times of falling, he tells us we are no longer worthy to be a Christian and there is no use in trying anymore. We also play a role in this. Many temptations are pleasurable. It is hard to resist. But, we must work to gain control over the body and fleshly desires.

Stop comparing self to others. We look at other Christians and form an inaccurate image of them. They appear as strong as ever and any temptation that comes along is handled with hardly an incident. They have always got a smile on their face, are upbeat, have a great spouse, are busy in church, and know most of the answers in Bible class. We might be tempted to ask, what are they doing that I’m not? We must not give into this mindset. Paul wrote, Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding, 2 Corinthians 10:12.

When we begin to compare ourselves with others, we start down a road that ultimately leads to disappointment and even ruin. Everyone struggles with sin. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 1 John 1:8, 10, 2:1-3.

No one is immune to temptation. No one is immune to sin. Those that we look at and think have it all together are still subject to weakness and the possibility of falling short with God.

Let go and trust God. We must learn to let go. Sinful behavior happens. We can’t take it back. Life offers no “do-overs.” Take inventory of your life and identify what is causing your guilt. For example, it may be something like immorality, dishonor, harsh words spoken, anger, hatred, resentment, grudges, impure thoughts or desires, etc. Take out a sheet of paper and list out your sin(s). Deal with each one specifically. Honestly confess them before God. Make a commitment to refrain from doing this again – to the best of your ability. Be committed to bringing your feelings out into the open – so you can deal with them properly. Once you have confessed these things to God, realize that His remedy for sin is complete. Jesus died for all our sins – past, present, and future. All your sins were future when they were paid for – that payment is complete. There is no sin but what Christ has already paid for! Paul wrote, you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, Colossians 2.13. See also Ephesians 1.7; 2.4-7.

Our God does not find it hard to forgive. When God forgives, our sins are blotted out completely, Psalm 103.9-14. He never holds them against us again. The sins we have sought forgiveness for will never again be a barrier between you and God unless we refuse to accept God’s forgiveness or doubt the value of Jesus’ sacrifice.

Not only must we fight emotional battles in order to chase away the darkness, but there are also some tangible things we can do during the course of everyday life.

Make good decisions on what you take in. We are surrounded by a culture and media that pumps in immorality. There is a open sewer located in many of our living rooms and home offices. Television and the internet can instantly pipe in raunchy and ungodly content. We are affected more than we realize. There are two passages we should focus on. Jesus said, Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone, Matthew 15.17-20. We should also give consideration to Paul’s writing: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things, Philippians 4.8.

Be careful who you associate with. Paul said, Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals, 1 Corinthians 15.33. Those we are around most do have an impact on us. They influence our thinking, speech, and actions. We should draw a clear line as to how far we will go and what we will participate in. Worldliness is pervasive and is often subtle. We can drift toward rationalization and compromise without even noticing.

Understand that chasing away the darkness is a matter of the heart. The key to our ultimate success resides inside a changed heart. That is, a heart that has completely given itself to God. Personal surrender is absolutely necessary. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me, Galatians 2.20. Paul also wrote, If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, Colossians 3.1-2. Once we take care of our heart, our actions will take care of themselves.

Far too long, we preached against symptoms of spiritual heart disease and wondered why many Christians fail to heed what is taught and progressively grow weaker. We hammer away at issues on social drinking, immodest apparel, entertainment choices, attending worship, gossip and purity in speech. It is right to teach on these things. But too often we only treat the symptoms and then wonder why problems constantly recur. These problems continue to occur because of spiritual heart disease.

We need to focus on the need for submission to God. We need to always pray for tender hearts. Hearts that are willing to conform to God – no matter what the rest of the world does. We must not be afraid to exhibit godly behavior under all circumstances at all times, Matthew 5.14-16.

Conclusion:

Darkness does not go away on its own. We have a personal responsibility to participate in the process. We can do so by surrendering our heart to God, dealing with the emotional baggage that is associated with sin, and taking decisive action to steer clear of darkness. Vigilance is always necessary. We must treat these matters with the utmost sense of urgency. As we close today, let us consider Paul’s writing in Ephesians 5:

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is, Ephesians 5.8–17.

Questions for Discussion

How is sin described in Hebrews 12? Describe the weighing effects of sin.

What are three things we can do with our sin?

Besides what was already listed, can you think of additional lessons we can learn from sin?

Why is dealing with the emotional component so important in chasing away the darkness?

Does understanding that perfection is impossible suggest a lax attitude toward sin?

Why is self comparison so paralyzing?

Why is it so hard to let go of our past sins and mistakes?

What can you do to better guard what media you consume?

David's conduct sets an important precedent. When we make plans and respond to situations we must include God first.

When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.

1 Chronicles 14.8-12 ESV

TODAY’S READING: 2 SAMUEL 5.11-6.23; 1 CHRONICLES 13-16

David stands in great contrast to Saul. God seemed to almost be an afterthought for Saul, who would determine his course of action and then cry out to God when things did not go his way. (See 1 Samuel 13-14.) David lived from a different perspective. Before acting, David inquired of God. He sought His presence and guidance. When David engaged the enemy in battle, God was there routing them with ease. As we think of our own time and circumstances, David’s conduct sets an important precedent. When we make plans and respond to situations we must include God first. Doing so accomplishes several things. First it reminds us of the importance of God’s will and purpose for our life. It gives God an opportunity to demonstrate His love for us and manifest His great power. It also may bring us incredible blessings. And finally, it will give us an opportunity to glorify God in thanks and praise after He has provided a solution. When making a decision, who do you think of first? The LORD is with you while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you, 2 Chronicles 15.2.

Psalm 107.1-3 ESV

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 106-107

As God’s children, we have an innumerable amount of reasons for praising God. God is so glorious, and the price that has been paid for our redemption is so great that the praise we give should pour out of our hearts. We have been rescued from spiritual death and have been adopted into His family. He has given us access to every spiritual blessing. And He has brought other godly people into our life to encourage us on our journey. Take a few moments today to pause and reflect – and thank God for what He has done in your life. You’ll be amazed at how this will change your entire perspective on the day ahead. And they shall be called The Holy People, The Redeemed of the LORD; and you shall be called Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken, Isaiah 62.12.

Psalm 133 ESV

TODAY’S READING: PSALM 133

Unity is a gift and is not a result of human achievement. When Christians come together it is because of the action of God, who has destroyed our sin, made us children inside His family, and made us together as one. Galatians 3.26-28 points to three things that happen when we obey the gospel. We become children of God, 3.26. We are clothed with Christ, 3.27. And, we are made one with all others, 3.28. When we realize what God did in Christ to save us and our need to become like Him, we can make wonderful progress in unity. I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one, John 17.11.
