Dear Patriot,

Greetings to our Constituents, fellow Floridians, and all Americans. As I sit and write this, I am reflecting on Memorial Day 2012, which also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Vietnam War, where my older brother served and was wounded at Khe Sahn.

The weather has been so nice here in South Florida and my concern is that many Americans did not stop to reflect upon what makes our nation such a free and exceptional Constitutional Republic during their holiday festivities. Many citizens have the day off, but the question is whether they remember those who gave “the last full measure of devotion?”

In memoriam:

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us? Then I said, Here am I. Send Me!”- Isaiah 6:8

“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends”. – John 15:13

When I reflect on all of the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for America since the battle at Lexington and Concord all the way up until today, those two Bible verses come to mind. What manner of person answers the call to service and leaves behind the comforts of their loved ones and homes to protect our beloved America?

Those who serve their country represent the best among us. They are the brothers and sisters with whom I, and many others, have had the privilege and honor to stand beside. They are our true heroes for whom we find a sense of impeccable pride when we remember their faithful sacrifice.

Two hundred years ago, America fought her second War of Independence, the War of 1812. In that war, we were blessed to have written the words which every American should know by heart, “The Star Spangled Banner:”

Oh say can you see, by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there
Oh say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Let us remember the men at Fort McHenry. During that bombardment,  these brave men ensured that our flag, the standard of liberty, freedom, and democracy, continued to stand. Let us remember that we are indeed the “Land of the Free” because we have always been and shall forever be the “Home of the Brave.”

Today, I had the honor of speaking at services honoring our fallen heroes in Stuart, Tequesta, and Port St. Lucie.

“Memorial Day is set aside every year to remember the ultimate sacrifice given by our Men and Women in uniform. Precious lives lost, so that we may live free.  One day a year is hardly fitting for such a gift to all of us, which is why Americans must always remember the price of freedom and never expect that it is free.

As a 22- year Army Veteran with several friends and relatives still serving in the Armed Forces, I have made it my primary mission in the United States Congress to act in the best interest of our troops, so that those who died did not die in vain.  This includes providing for the families of the fallen and providing for those injured even once the physical battle of war is over.  As a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will continue to fight to make sure our Military has all of the resources it needs, up until the last warrior returns home to their family safe.

The United States of America possesses the greatest military force the world has ever known. Our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsman volunteer to protect and defend this country and all of its citizens, and do so with honor, integrity and excellence. When our Men and Women in uniform take the oath to serve their country, every single one of them is prepared to die for his or her country, and yet their courage and selfless committment to their beloved Nation, surpass any fear they might have.  This is true bravery and loyalty. These are the greatest men and women of each generation.

As Americans enjoy the Memorial Day weekend and pay tribute to the men and women who have literally laid down their lives for us, I hope and pray each and every family member of the fallen find peace in knowing their country stands stronger because of their sacrifice, and they will forever be an American Hero.  My wife Angela and I, and our daughters Aubrey and Austen, will be reflecting on this somber day with sorrow for those lost, as well as an understanding that we live in the greatest country this world has ever known, not by luck, but because of the courage, commitment and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform.”

The solemn act of honoring those who have fallen in battle is a custom that seems to have faded in importance to our nation over time.

Nowadays, many Americans have forgotten the meaning and traditions of Memorial Day. At cemeteries across the country, the graves of the fallen are sadly ignored, and worse, neglected.

While there are towns and cities still planning Memorial Day parades, many have not held a parade in decades. Some think the day is for honoring anyone who has died, not just those fallen in service to our country.

Perhaps they do not know how deeply our nation once appreciated those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the principles we hold most dear. Perhaps those very principles of individual sovereignty, freedom and liberty are no longer so important.

It was not always so.

In 1868, on May 5th, Memorial Day, originally called “Decoration Day,” was officially proclaimed by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11.

General Logan asked that we cherish “tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes. Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders.”

But times change. In the 1960s our warriors were not welcomed back from battle with parades and cheers, and the fallen were not honored as they had been in the past.

Perhaps reflecting those times, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed in 1968 as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends – time for fun and recreation, rather than remembrance and reflection.

Dr. Thorpe was born in North Carolina to wonderful parents who were career educators at the college level. They instilled in him the important values of faith in God, hard work, education, family, responsibility, caring for your neighbors and fulfilling your dreams with integrity. Those fundamental values have shaped his character and his career and formed the basis for his lifelong commitment as a strong conservative. They taught him that America is the greatest country and to look for opportunities not excuses.

After working hard and successfully completing honors classes in high school, Dr Thorpe was widely recruited as a star basketball player by over 100 major colleges and eventually chose Duke University after receiving a phone call from Duke president Terry Sanford, a former US Senator. 

Early during his college years, Dr. Thorpe lost his father to cancer, his grandmother, his dog, and several other family members within a three month period. Mentored by Coach K, he made an important decision then to commit himself even more to excellence in his pre-med studies and he graduated with a 3.5 GPA and a BS in Psycholgy and Biology.

Dr. Thorpe received his MD and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the U of North Carolina. He completed his internship in internal medicine and psychiatry at Tulane Medical Center. Instead of clinical medicine, he decided to focus on healthcare administration and reform and his career has been marked with great achievements in this field.

In 2004, Gov Jeb Bush asked Dr Thorpe to serve as Secretary of Florida’s Agency for Healthcare Administration and then in 2005 he was appointed Florida’s Chief Medical Officer for AHCA. Dr. Thorpe has also served as Chair of Health Care IT Committee of Broward County Medical Association and Dr Thorpe was elected Chair of the Medicaid Reform Advocates Coalition, an organization composed of 99% democrats.

Dr Thorpe also developed a master plan for Public-Private-Partnerships between Hospitals & Community that is widely recognized as creative and highly cost-effective.

This election cycle, President Obama’s team is bringing up class warfare, the war on women and Mitt Romney’s record at Bain Capital. One issue that’s missing, to the displeasure of the left, is gun control.

During his 2008 presidential campaign, Obama called for a ban on the sale or transfer of semi-automatic weapons and more restrictions on purchasing all firearms. I pointed out in a previous column that most handguns sold today are semi-automatic.

Since his inauguration, however, we have heard little on gun control from the president. And he’s been given plenty of opportunity to make a stand. There have been several school shootings. There was the Fort Hood tragedy (which the administration incorrectly called a “work-related incident”). Finally, there was the infamous Jan. 8, 2011, massacre, when U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and 18 others were shot during a public gathering in a supermarket parking lot.

In the days following the Giffords shooting, liberal politicians and the press called for tighter handgun restrictions — but the president remained silent, choosing instead to urge everyone to tone down the rhetoric. A month after the shooting, Time Magazine’s Alex Altman noted that Obama’s reticence pleased neither the left nor the gun lobbyists. Fully a year after Giffords’ injuries, the Washington Post argued that the best way to honor her would be to enact gun control legislation, much like the Brady Bill signed into law by President Bill Clinton. The Post editorial noted that when President Obama delivered his State of the Union address after the shooting, he “could not muster a single word about the need for reasonable gun control measures to ward off such violence in the future,” expressing hope that he would soon find the courage to do so.

What the Post’s editorial board refuses to recognize, however, is that outlawing handguns won’t mean an end to handgun violence. Criminals would continue to obtain handguns just as they  always have — through illegal street sales. It would merely make law-abiding citizens unable to protect themselves and their loved ones in the face of violence directed toward them. And self-protection is, after all, the whole purpose of the Second Amendment.
