The ‘Consent Of The Governed’ Undermined

A modern ‘train of abuses and usurpation’s

The state of the British colonies when the declaration was written very much resembles the state of our union today. I believe more Americans are losing trust and confidence in the federal government.

Consider the arrogance of Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner after she was exposed as a key player in the scandal involving politically motivated investigations of tea party groups and other conservative outlets seeking nonprofit status. She made a statement to a congressional committee, pleaded her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and then departed the hearing room, soon thereafter to begin a taxpayer-funded “leave of absence.”

The Declaration of Independence expressed the people’s right to petition the government for a redress of grievances, resulting in one of our First Amendment rights. However, last week Democratic Rep. Jim McDermott suggested to six American citizens at a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on the IRS abuses that they do not have that right.

Former IRS Chairman Douglas Shulman was asked to explain some of the 157 trips he took to the White House. He responded with “Easter Egg Hunt.”

We had to endure Attorney General Eric Holder saying he knows nothing about the Justice Department secretly probing private communications of the press, only to learn later that he signed off on an affidavit for such. But he really did not mean it. And don’t forget his role in the gunrunning scandal Operation Fast and Furious.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told us during the healthcare debate a few years ago that Congress had to pass the bill in order to know what was in it. Now Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is soliciting private funding in order to finance the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Scandals that must make a difference

We must listen to government officials telling us that losing an American ambassador and abandoning Americans in a combat engagement is irrelevant or that the incident at Benghazi, Libya, consulate is a joke or a made up scandal. This truly does not speak to the better angels of our nature.

When Susan Rice can lie to the American people five times on Sunday talk shows and be rewarded with a promotion to National Security Advisor — or when Victoria Nuland can play a key part in altering intelligence talking points and be recommended for higher State Department post — the government lacks the accountability the declaration envisioned. But then again, as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said, “What difference does it make?”

We found out this week that the State Department allegedly has been covering up some disturbing behavior by some ambassadors and security detail personnel. I know, what difference does it make?

The difference is that we also now know that our own government is recording our communications data. We are told that these activities are all about ensuring national security, that the PRISM data-mining program and the PATRIOT Act that presumably allows it are necessary. President Obama told us “trade-offs” of our privacy are necessary to keep us secure.

But remember Benjamin Franklin’s warning: “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Refuse to consent to bad leadership

We know that a huge data collection facility is being built in Utah. What becomes of the billions of records mined daily?

What happened with Anwar al-Awlaki, the jihadist with ties to al Qaeda eventually killed in a drone strike; with Maj. Nidal Hasan of the Fort Hood, Texas, terrorist attack; with the underwear bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab; with Faisal Shahzad, the Times Square bomber; with the Tsarnaev brothers of the Boston Marathon bombings; and with Carlos Bledsoe, who traveled to Somalia and Yemen for terrorist training and shot two Army soldiers? Why are 57 Islamic organizations, some with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, sending a letter to former counter-terrorism adviser and now-CIA Director John Brennan?

Why are we carpet-bombing American citizens while disregarding the enemy for precision scrutiny? Has cultural relativism and political correctness led us to the point where we all must be classified as being guilty of something to appease the sensitivities of others?

No, I do not subscribe to the belief that we must surrender civil liberties in order to be safer. That belief and the scandals discussed above have fueled a lack of trust between the governed and those occupying high elected offices.

If there is to be a next generation, we must re-establish the consent of the governed and discharge those who believe that lying, deception and the officialdom of arrogance is the new normal. We must find American leaders who will take responsibility and accountability for their actions, and we must not tolerate excuse-makers and deflectors.
The time for choosing is upon us all.

Today is Flag Day and I hope everyone takes time to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and remind ourselves of the greatness represented by this simple symbol of liberty and freedom. However, our flag wouldn’t have such a grand history if not for something else we celebrate today: the 238th birthday of the United States Army. The US Army’s simple creed says “This We’ll Defend” so how appropriate that we recognize the flag and those who take the oath to support and defend it – on the same day. From the day the Minutemen answered the call to Lexington and Concord, to those who answer the call today to deployments worldwide, the American flag has been that herald of liberty, not oppression. Army men and women leave the warmth and shelter of their homes not as conquerors, but as liberators. I’m often asked what title do I prefer, Congressman or Colonel? Well, I seek to be a good Christian, husband, and Daddy, but I shall always prefer the title American soldier — a title I share with my Dad and nephew. Happy Birthday, Army Strong!

As I ponder the NSA records data mining episode here are my thoughts. This is like carpet bombing vs. precision attack. Can someone explain why we weren’t listening to Anwar-al-Awlaki and his conversations with Major Nidal Hasan? Why weren’t we able to track Carlos Bledsoe’s travel to Somalia and Yemen to receive terrorist training? Why didn’t we pay attention to warning signs of Abdul Mutallab (underwear bomber) with a one-way ticket and little baggage traveling from Nigeria to America? Why weren’t we paying attention to the Tsarnaev brothers’ travels and connections to Chechen Islamic terrorism — heck Russia warned us? Why is it that in October 2011, 57 Islamic organizations — several with ties to Muslim Brotherhood — sent a letter to then counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan demanding we purge training materials and punish instructors they deemed “offensive” and we didn’t say “shove it” and target THEIR records? We’d rather carpet bomb Americans to cover our cowardice in confronting Islamic extremism. Benjamin Franklin said, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Now and then I like to share with you some items of hypocrisy when it comes to our government. I just received another notice from the US House of Representatives Committee on Ethics relating to the Ethics in Government Act. Yes, I know what you’re thinking. It seems they want me to file another financial disclosure statement since I departed the Congress, and they threatened me with a $200 fine. Now would it just be simple to ask, are there any changes from your last statement? However, consider this, did anyone ask the IRS to submit a financial disclosure statement after 225 conferences over the past two years at the cost of $50 million to the American taxpayer? Did anyone ask Secretary of State John Kerry to file a financial disclosure statement after giving the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood government American taxpayer dollars — after Congress had stated no? So actually, why should I file a financial disclosure statement since the DOJ, IRS, and NSA can just secretly get all my financial, phone, email records anyway. Welcome to the hypocrisy of our Federal Government. This is similar to Satan asking Reverend Billy Graham to disclose his church attendance records. And yes, I will be calling my former colleague Rep. Michael Conaway, Chairman of the Committee on Ethics.
