AAU Governing Board Welcomes New Member

Allied American University (AAU) proudly welcomed Dr. Dan Lubin to its governing board this summer. Dr. Lubin, who earned his Ph.D. in geophysical sciences from the University of Chicago, is currently a research physicist and senior lecturer at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Dr. Lubin also serves as an engineering duty officer in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

His research has been awarded various accolades, including the NASA Goddard Earth Science and Technology (GEST) Fellowship, the U.S. Coast Guard Arctic Service Medal and the U.S. Navy Antarctica Service Medal. His major field work has taken him across the globe, including an assignment in Antarctica to conduct atmospheric optics and satellite remote sensing research.

Lubin's extensive background is a complementary addition to the rich and diverse background of AAU's governing board membership. The board's unique compilation of strengths, professional experience and strategic planning capabilities ensures every AAU student will receive a quality education that prepares them for their professional career.

Allied American University Introduces University-Level Medical Certificate Programs

Allied American University (AAU) now offers four medical certificate programs that provide comprehensive curriculum on a university level. Students who want to enter the growing healthcare field as a medical biller, medical coder, medical administrative assistant or pharmacy technician can now take their coursework to the next level and set themselves apart in the market. The certificate programs are particularly good for military spouses who want to start new, portable careers with growth potential.

The four certificate programs give students the necessary essentials, while additional university-level coursework enhances core skills and helps give them an advantage in today’s healthcare field. The programs include:

Medical Administrative Assisting - Students learn the basics of medical administrative assisting such as coordinating patient care, maintaining patient records, filling out insurance paperwork and handling billing and bookkeeping. Additionally, students gain knowledge of electronic health information management and learn about Electronic Health Records (EHR) software, as well as develop a strong comprehension of English Composition to equip them with the tools necessary for professional business writing. Employment of medical assistants is expected to grow 34 percent from 2008 to 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations.*

Medical Billing - Students are oriented to the background and importance of insurance, coding and the medical billing processes encountered in a physician office setting. Accurate healthcare documentation is emphasized, while students are enabled to distinguish and differentiate among the various ICD-9-CM codes, requirements and insurance providers. Additionally, students will learn Electronic Health Information Management and how to utilize Electronic Health Records (EHR) software that is commonly used in healthcare settings. Employment is expected to grow much faster than the average. Job prospects should be very good; technicians with a strong understanding of technology and computer software will be in particularly high demand.*

Medical Coding - This program teaches students the medical coding conventions and guidelines for the ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT and Level II HCPCS medical coding system and how to apply the rules to assign codes for patient medical services accurately. A variety of healthcare payer systems is also presented that includes Medicare, HMOs, PPOs and managed care. Additionally, emphasis is placed on the importance of professional business writing, to enable the student to communicate clearly and effectively with insurers and other business entities. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 20 percent, much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018.*

Pharmacy Technician - The essentials of medical history, pharmacy settings, drug regulation and administration are just some of the subjects reviewed with the pharmacy technician program. Students learn to assist the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care to individuals, which may include drug distribution, inventory management, pharmacy administration and customer service to patients. Additionally, a comprehensive review of English Composition and Algebra enable the student to firmly grasp the importance of good communication and mathematics in this growing field. Finally, the program prepares the student to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam. Employment of pharmacy technicians and aides is expected to increase by 25 percent from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.*

Henry Moultrie Jr. Recognized as Allied American University’s 2009 Outstanding Graduate

Allied American University (AAU) is proud to announce that Henry Moultrie Jr., a technical sergeant in the United States Air Force, has been recognized as the university's 2009 Outstanding Graduate. Henry received this award for his stellar academic performance and commitment to pursuing his associate of arts degree in General Studies, while also maintaining important military and family responsibilities.

As an active duty service member, Henry's top priority was his position as an Aerospace Propulsion Mechanic at McChord Air Force Base, where he supervised a team of 24 individuals working on cargo planes. In addition to his military career, Henry is a husband and father to three young boys. Free time was a rare commodity for Henry; yet, his desire to ensure a brighter future for his family led him to purse his degree at Allied American University, an online, military friendly university.

"My reasons for taking college classes are to advance in my military career and to obtain the knowledge and skills required that will assist me in the transition to a civilian lifestyle after the Air Force," said Henry.
