There are things in life that you certainly can’t handle. In fact, some trials perhaps make you break your spirit. But remember, these things aren’t given to you without any reason. Sometimes, these trials are here to remind you that your life is worth living and that there are things you need to get through to be able to appreciate what life has to offer.

Realize Your Worth

Though you may not feel it, you are valued and appreciated more than you know. You have already impacted so many people with your existence. Your family, your friends, and the members of your community, you previously contributed something special to them. You already made a difference, even if it doesn’t feel like it. Your permanent absence is something that people might not be able to handle. So before thinking about doing something stupid, consider those people who might not continue living without you, who would miss you, and who would grieve for you forever. “Not all people who have thoughts of suicide end up acting on those thoughts. But for those who do, generally there is deep emotional pain combined with a belief that things will never improve.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC said.

Source: wikimedia.org

Face The Fear

Counselor Monte Drenner once said, “An individual’s world gets smaller each time they give into a fear.” Several people or events might trigger dark thoughts of suicide. It could be due to bullying, a death of a loved one, physical abuse, emotional neglect, and a lot more. It’s perfectly okay to feel sadness from those painful experiences. However, it’s not enough reason to spiral those thoughts into committing suicide. Death is not a solution to end the pain. In fact, your negative thoughts are only the result of your mental condition. Therefore, it is still diagnosable and treatable. Understanding the influence of a pre-existing condition can lift you out of the black space where suicidal thoughts fester.

Do Something Different

Your emotions push you to do things negatively. Start channeling it to something you enjoy doing. You can start writing a journal, compose a song, paint, draw, and create a poem. Do anything that can give voice to your feelings. This way, you can be able to understand what you are going through further. It will allow you to open your thoughts and feelings to others as well. Be productive and do things that make you happy. Appreciate your life and live the way you want to. Remember, “Happy people do things differently. They make their emotional well-being a priority and practice daily and weekly habits that help them create joy, happiness, and satisfaction in their lives.” says Dr. Chantal Gagnon, PhD LMHC.

Source: pixabay.com

There Is Hope

Whenever you feel like hurting yourself, seek help. Suicidal thoughts aren’t treatable, but the mental condition associated with it is curable. There are tons of ways to silence those internal voices that make you lose yourself. You only need to accept your situation and try your best not to let them control you. There are clinics and counseling centers that provide help. They can give you confidential support and even offer resources or medications if that’s what you need. You can find the type of counseling that works for you. It could be group counseling, phone counseling, or even one-on-one counseling. Choose the one you’re comfortable with.

Your thoughts matter, so share them with people you trust. It will help you widen your horizons and see the world from a different perspective.
Just a month ago, I thought I was ready to die. I tried to murder myself and even wrote a suicide letter for my parents stating how I was disappointed in myself because I was about to cause them disappointment. I have been suffering from depression for a year now, and I am one of the millions who can attest that this is not something you can just get rid of only by watching an inspirational video. People with depression suffer. It is like something is going to explode inside, and there is no one to feel it but you. It is like your own mind is betraying you somehow.

According to Dr. Chantal Gagnon, PhD LMHC, “While suicide is a very serious health and national problem that requires our attention, an even less public reality is that many of us have had suicidal thoughts at one point or another in our lives.” My concerned friend insisted that I seek professional help as my condition was becoming severe. It has been two weeks since I went to counseling, and somehow, I get a peek of what it’s like outside my mind, though it’s just for a limited time. My therapist gave me a different perspective. For instance, she asked me how I see my life, and surprisingly, I couldn’t remember saying anything negative about it.

“I have loving parents back home. All I can see is my dad’s bright face while sitting on his favorite chair and my mom coming close with a cup of coffee. They are excited for me to become a doctor, and they know it has been my dream ever since I was little. I am not going to be a doctor anytime soon as I have decided to become an artist, a sculptor, to be exact.”

Then, I realized how lucky I am to have wonderful people in my life. How selfish can I be to even think about putting unbearable pain on these people? Am I really letting them grieve for me just because I couldn’t handle the pressure, the burden, the overwhelming darkness in me? I am scared of the thought of breaking their hearts for not being a doctor, but then again, to end my life is beyond any heartbreak a parent could bear. No, I cannot let them go through a horrible situation where they could wonder what they have done or could have done. Alicia H. Clark, Psy.D. says, “The sensation of pressure doesn’t have to be negative—it can be a positive challenge and motivating.”

Three Questions You Need To Ask Yourself Before DecidingTo Murder Yourself:

Source: unsplash.com

Why Am I Doing This?

“Sometimes the reasons people don’t recognize the signs of suicide is because they are in denial, especially when it comes to those close to them.” Torey C. Richards, LMHC, said. If the answer to your question is because you can’t handle it anymore, then tell that to those who haven’t eaten in a week or those who have no roof to hide under during the storm.

So, you are not going to be a doctor, an engineer, a lawyer, or a pilot. Then, go rant to those people who cannot afford to go to school or someone who doesn’t even know how to write their name.

We all have problems, and you are not responsible for everyone else’s. You only have to carry your cross, which can be lighter than someone else’s who refuses to stop and throw away his cross.

Is Dying The Only Way?

Can’t you talk it over? If your problem is a family member, your parents, siblings, husband, or wife, communication should be an option. Never think it is impossible as you are somehow connected.

If talking is not an option as it will only cause misunderstanding and make things worse, can’t you walk away, move out, and let things die down?

Do I Really Want To Die?

No, of course, you don’t! You just want to be heard. You wish for someone to see somehow the misery you are in and that you need help.

Reach out to a family member, a friend, or anyone who cares for you, and don’t be afraid to seek the help of professional people who have the power to help you. Never mind what your mom used to tell you about not talking to strangers. Counseling can definitely help!

Source: unsplash.com

Although suicidal thoughts are one of the symptoms of mental health illnesses such as depression, and sometimes, it is impossible to battle with, keep in mind all that I have written above, and more importantly, seek help! You cannot fight depression all by yourself. I know you are strong, but that’s precisely the point. Your battle is with yourself, and that is more than enough signal for you to seek help from someone who knows how to deal with and manage what you are going through. For online counseling services, there are reliable sites such as BetterHelp, which are ready to lend a hand in helping you fight depression. Don’t let it take over you. Reach out!

Many of us face the apparent symptoms of anxiety. In fact, we get to feel worried almost every day about the things that require our attention. Unfortunately for some other people, it’s an emotional dilemma that they can no longer control. Even in a seemingly ordinary situation, it leaves a lasting effect on the quality of life they have. So, what’s going on with that condition?

Why Are You Anxious?

“Anxiety is often thought of as an emotion, but it’s really more than that, especially when it gets to be problematic.” That is according to Robert Allison, MA, LPC. While the exact causes of anxiety disorders are not fully understood, some things can increase the risk of developing one. First, the condition of anxiety can come from a person’s genes. In most people with anxiety disorder, their family shares related cases in their lineage. Another one is the environment where they get to experience a traumatic event in their life that triggers it. Meaning that due to the emotional and psychological experiences they’ve encountered, their brain functions differently where there is an imbalance in activity levels. Sometimes, other pre-existing conditions are also linked to this illness as well.

Source: flickr.com

What Happens When You’re Anxious?

According to research, there are tons of people in the world who experience different types of anxiety disorders. Someone can have excessive anxiety that occurs more days up to a couple of months. It’s an unfortunate circumstance because you get to experience irritability, sleep disorders, fatigue, stress, and muscle tension. Though some cases may vary and tend to be different from the latter, the episodes of intense fear are always triggered. It may cause a slight to severe physical reaction, such as shortness of breath, accelerated heart rate, muscle pain, and dizziness. “Just like our feelings give us information about our needs, so do our bodies through physiological feedback,” says Eliza Chamblin, LCSW. However, not all people have the same effects. In fact, anyone can experience anxiety without a known triggering factor.

Anxiety’s troubling symptoms may also vary from one person to another. However, their commonalities are trouble concentrating, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, high blood pressure, and headaches. As is with all mental illnesses, anxiety is not just an overreaction of a person’s body or a personal weakness. So, telling someone to relax is not going to help at all. It is a condition that is deeply rooted, and it’s not that easy to just let it go. Needless to say, the neurochemical basis of anxiety is exceptionally complicated, so telling people to calm down is not going to be useful.

Some people with anxiety disorder go through life without seeking professional help. Though they might find it time-consuming and somehow embarrassing, they need to see a psychologist. Those with anxiety disorders can get treated with cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT. It is a process where an individual is encouraged to create a different way of thinking, behaving, and reacting. “CBT is a relatively brief, skills-focused treatment that has been shown to be effective for a wide variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, anger, social skills deficits, and relational problems.” Shelby Harris, PsyD, CBSM explains.

Aside from the therapy, the person with anxiety disorder is often advised to avoid alcohol, drugs, and caffeine and encouraged to get regular exercise and have a healthy lifestyle instead. Another form of anxiety relief is medication, where the patient can get drug prescriptions such as benzodiazepine or antidepressants.

If you think that your anxiety is not that harmful and you’re confident enough not to worry about it, that’s fine. Nonetheless, if it’s something that bothers you and seems to change your way of living, try consulting a professional expert. Asking a therapist won’t hurt and if you need to start working on your progress, let BetterHelp assist you on that matter.

When it comes to anxiety, it’s easy to think that somebody got it all figured out because everything seems to be normal. You wake up in bed the next morning, wash your hair, brush your teeth, and then you’re all set up. People assume that if you cannot visibly see that something’s wrong, it’s not there. It is as if the pain doesn’t exist unless you’re bleeding. They don’t know that at the back of your head, something lingers. They don’t understand that the worst pains that you can’t handle are the ones you cannot see.

“When you’re consumed with what may or may not happen in several minutes or months, you can’t appreciate the here and now,” says Marla W. Deibler, PsyD. So, to be able to get on with life, you hide everything with a smile. You pretend that everything’s okay even if you entirely know that it’s not. The worst part, only you can feel it. Sometimes, you don’t want to talk about it because the more you take time to notice the situation, the more it gets painful.

Source: flickr.com

The Devastating Truth

Anxiety makes your whole body move too fast.”Anxiety is a broad category of symptoms, while panic attacks are a specific way in which anxiety can express or manifest itself.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon PhD LMHC said. It makes you feel that emotional stress overly consumes you. You won’t even realize that you’re developing strange habits like grinding your teeth, cracking your knuckles, or rubbing your fingers. It feels like you are holding on to yourself, like you’re the only lifeline you can get. You somehow want to twitch reality and create a world of your own. You avoid eye contact because you don’t listen to any words that others are saying. Though you don’t intentionally ignore them, you just keep hearing the sound of your voice that tells you to stay away from people’s opinions. You don’t want to speak with anything related to your problem.

Your anxiety feels like a fire that is out of control. Everything is unexplainable and confusing to understand. All the things you know become frustrating, and it feels like it takes forever to manage it. Sometimes, you try to look for an answer to a question that isn’t there. You overthink that it makes you see things beyond their every meaning. There’s no life in that situation because you’re feeling the entire emotional dilemma all at the same time. As a result, you deem to end it at all cost.

The Realizations

Some days are better than others, but it still doesn’t take all the pain away. You may feel happy today, but it gets worse in the following days. Even if you think it will be over, there’s a lot of it from where it came from. Overcoming emotional, psychological, and social issues is difficult because anxiety comes back anyway.

Source: pixabay.com

Lying awake at night and thinking that you’re going to die without everybody noticing becomes a sad life. Anxiety makes you fear everything, even those that you are not supposed to. You get worries on every split second of your life and you know that’s not healthy. “Fear makes us feel alive and know we are stepping outside our comfort zones, which is exciting,” says Steve Orma, PsyD, a clinical psychologist.

Sometimes, the only way to understand your situation is by embracing it. By knowing that you’re vulnerable to pain and worries make you aware of the things you can do. It will be hard at first, but when you realize that your life is meaningful, you’ll soon want to live. Your anxiety can worsen your current situation, so before anything gets out of hand, seek professional advice. BetterHelp might share with you some solutions. All you have to do is reach out.

Bullying is just one of those things that can happen to you, whether you’re a kid or an adult. Sometimes, the only way to make it stop is to do something about it yourself. Luckily, there are a lot of ways you can confront your bully. From talking to understanding and even taking a stand, these things might be able to make your situation better. What we have here for you right now are some of the best pieces of advice you can get when handling a bully.

source: alert.psychnews.org

Remember That Being Bullied Is Not Your Fault

“First of all, let’s define bullying. It is the deliberate, recurring, and intentional activity by the bully that is intended to create fear and dominance over the person being bullied.” Sr. Patricia E. Hudson, CSJ, LMHC, explains. One of the first things that you should imprint in your mind before you confront your bully is the fact that whatever he put you through is not your fault. According to an expert, most bullying victims believe that they did something wrong, and that’s why bullying is present. That is wrong. Your bully is the one who has issues, not you. We’re telling you this because, chances are, your bully will use it against you. People will say that you brought this upon yourself when you didn’t. Don’t resort to committing self-inflicting harm, and always ask for counseling and advice when you feel you can’t handle the pressure.

Stop Playing The Victim

It’s more of a reverse psychology scheme. One of the probable reasons why your bully just won’t go away is because he still feels like you can be manipulated, harassed, and controlled. Try making them feel confused by doing something unexpected whenever they go the extra mile just to make you suffer. If they make a joke out of you, laugh with them. If they embarrass you in public, walk it off or own the moment if you can. And if they make snide remarks whenever you pass by, pretend they don’t exist. Show them you’re not affected. They will move on from you eventually. “Being bullied is hurtful and humiliating. It’s not an accident or joke—it’s a repetitive action that happens to a designated person or group over a period of time.” Debbie Pincus, MS LMHC, said.

Take A Stand

Bullies love to torment people who lack the confidence and courage to stand up for themselves. If you’re getting bullied and you feel like you’re alone, then maybe it’s time for you to prove to everyone that you can handle yourself. When approaching the bully, stand straight and confident. Use your words and not your fists. Have a verbal battle with your bully. Challenge his motive. Show everyone just how much of a sick person he is. But when your bully starts attacking you physically, then you know what it means – time to defend yourself. Always remember that making the first attack is a bad idea. Don’t become the monster you’re fighting.

source: pinterest.com

These are three of the best pieces of advice anyone must remember when confronting their bully. It’s hard. It is emotionally and physically taxing, but always remember that you’re doing it for yourself. Aaron Norton, LMHC, LMFT, once said, “The effects of constantly being bullied are more than just psychological. Research now shows that there may be physical structural differences in the brains of adolescents who are regularly victimized, and this could increase the chance that they suffer from mental illness.” And once you show your bully that you can fight back, then there‘s a considerable chance that the bullying will stop and your life will get better.

Our minds are unbelievably active when it comes to storing information and memories we acquire every day. However, it is also quite vulnerable to a lot of things. From everyday stress and things that are out of our control to our thoughts and bad habits, all of these are factors that can cause adverse effects on our mental health. Lucky for us, we can protect our psychological wellness by being able to identify or recognize the things that can cause our minds to suffer. On that note, we have listed some of the most common reasons why we have poor mental health. Read on and find out if there’s one that applies to you.

Lack Of Exercise

“For starters, exercise releases endorphins, the body’s “feel-good hormones,” that can calm the mind and relax the body.” Clinical psychologist Jenny C. Yip, PsyD, said. Research conducted by professors from the University of London proved that there’s a link between a person’s physical and mental aspects. According to the research, low levels of physical activity can make an individual more prone to depression and other forms of mental issues. What you can do to help yourself is to start using those muscles. It doesn’t even have to be a proper workout routine. Everydayusual stuff such as cleaning the house, walking around the neighborhood, going out for a jog, and running errands will do. What matters is that you don’t spend most of your day in one area and that you’re using your body muscles.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

According to Dr. Aaron Kaplan, PsyD, Clinical Psychologist, “Sleep can restore your mind and body. The immune system repairs itself, and the brain rests and recharges while you sleep. Without enough sleep, you can’t function at your best.” Not having enough sleep every once in a while is okay, but when it becomes chronic, then you definitely need to do something about it. Sleep deprivation is much more harmful than you think because, aside from its physical effects, it can also increase your risk of developing depression and anxiety disorders. Don’t let it go that far, and start forming a healthier night-time routine. You can do that by cutting the time you spend using your gadgets late at night, putting a limit on your caffeine consumption, and making sleep a top priority.

Being A Workaholic

Working too much exposes you to stress and exhaustion, two of the most common things that can cause dangerous mental conditions. In fact, a 2011 study showed that people who are working for at least 11 hours a day are twice more likely to get depressed than those who just work on regular 9:00 am – 5:00 pm shifts. What you can do is set some time for yourself and your loved ones. You can spend your day off just relaxing or spending time with your friends and family. It’s important to take breaks now and then. Your well-being is more important than your work, after all. “Some stress is unavoidable, but if you can keep perspective, then it can be a whole lot easier.” Gretchen Flores, MA LPC LCPC, said.

These three are just some of the probable reasons why you have poor mental health. Unfortunately, there are still other factors that you should consider if you want to find out why you experience psychological suffering. Just remember that if things are becoming too much, then it’s better to seek professional aid. You can visit https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/ and get some additional knowledge you might need.

Medicine today is very advanced compared to 10 or 20 years ago. We have achieved a minimal amount of time, leaps and bounds compared to our rate in the past. Not to mention our highly advanced medical equipment available to use that helped us to cure different kinds of diseases, which not too long ago was very dangerous (an example of the disease is cholera). However, we still haven’t found a cure for bipolar disorder. All we can do is suppress them by taking preventive medicines and with the help of the people around us.

What Are Some Of Its Indications?

People with bipolar tendencies are irritable and have extremes of emotions, sudden outbursts of laughter and anger, and maniacal feelings. People often do not understand patients with bipolar drifts, and we take their outbursts as somewhat extremes of our common emotions. Specific studies about bipolar disorder show that people who suffer from the disease tend to have fewer friends or acquaintances because they commonly evade them whenever possible. Apparently, they do not understand what they are doing. They sometimes start laughing hard and then suddenly shout angrily at something all in the blink of an eye. People often mistake them for mentally disturbed persons, so they avoid them. But they should not.

What Triggers The Disorder?

Source: aolcdn.com

“Bipolar disorder is probably the main psychiatric disorder where medication is absolutely essential.” John Preston, PsyD. said. Bipolar disorder is triggered by a variety of stimuli: stress, exhaustion, personal problems, or even little things such as a funny hat someone passing by is wearing. We can help them by sharing our time with them by talking to them, visiting them often in their house, or by merely encouraging them to take on physical activities such as sports or going to the gym to exercise. It can be an outlet to relieve some stress building up in them resulting from their day-to-day life.

What Can A Person Do?

Source: images.agoramedia.com

People with bipolar disorder do not know it themselves, and it is up to the people around them how to help them. We can even suggest that they seek professional advice or see a doctor who specializes in people who have bipolar disorder so that they can prescribe medicine that suits their needs, such as mood stabilizing medications. One of the ways in which to suppress their bipolar tendencies is to have a daily routine. That means they can take their mind off of stressful things, and it will help them establish a stable condition of their mind, lessening the triggers of these episodes. Simon Rego, PsyD, said, “Some patients with bipolar disorder may have trouble complying with medication and/or dealing with the consequences of the disorder.” That’s something to look into.

All in all, people who suffer from bipolar disorder need help, and we, as the people who love them and have a concern for them, can help them because it will undoubtedly lead to depression if not checked. And as we all know, depression is potentially dangerous for the people who suffer from it and for the people around them. Worst case, patients often attempt suicide without ever knowing what is happening to them. BetterHelp can help you understand the need to adequately know sufficient information about the disorder because it is not a light case. Though it does not have a cure as of yet, the treatment that they really need comes from our understanding and love.

It’s pretty reasonable to feel pressured and anxious about things around us. But it’s not normal when we get stressed out for stuff that doesn’t need to matter either. Sometimes, we overthink all of it, and as a result, we end up damaging our thoughts and behavior. We might get over it at some point, but as long we keep on stressing over things for no reason, our mental state isn’t going to be healthy at all.

It’s not helpful if we cause ourselves harm by thinking about stupid things. Sometimes, we’re not even aware of what those things are. So BetterHelp made a list that probably most of us are guilty of stressing ourselves out.

Source: defense.gov

Creating Relevance – We might say that we don’t care if we matter to people, but at the back of our minds, we’re thinking about it. Meaning we want them to know that we exist and that we are relevant. It adds up to the stress because we believe we’re not good enough when people ignore us. It is okay to feel desired and liked, but stressing over it? It’s not worth it. “Research shows that how you think about yourself can have a powerful effect on how you feel. Practice using words that promote feelings of self-worth and personal power. Give yourself a positive pep-talk.” That’s what Dr. Aaron Kaplan, PsyD, Clinical Psychologist implies.

Physical Appearance – It’s not okay to get stressed over our looks, provided that people are different in all aspects. We shouldn’t stress over our physical appearance that much because the important thing that matters is our personality. We know that looks have become the basis of almost everything that attracts positivity, but when we think about it, it all fades.

Finding The Right One – If we get stressed about finding the right one for us, it will not allow us to live our lives in the moment. We’ll end up missing out on the things that indeed make us happy. When we are anxious and depressed because we think we’ll never meet someone who matches our standards, then we’re putting a high amount of impossibility to find the one. “By conveying this message to you, they keep you ensnared because you eventually start believing that no one else would ever want you,” says Nicole Issa, Psy.D. So, instead of thinking about it, let’s just wait.

What People Think – it’s one of the primary reasons why most of us feel depressed and stressed. We stick ourselves with the idea that we have to be “perfect.” We somehow strive hard to get people’s attention. That’s why we lose track of the things that make us become a better person trying to justify what others want us to be. Better yet, we need to live our lives the way we want and not care about what people might say. That’s the only way we can live freely.

What Others Have – It’s natural for us to compare things because we somehow feel the desire to want what others have. It’s not a bad thing. However, it becomes stressful when it comes to the point that we lose ourselves in the process of wanting what others have. We become open to the idea of doing wrongful things. We get incredibly jealous and start to think that life is always unfair. So before we end up doing something stupid, we should at least value the things that we have rather than chase those things we don’t have.

Source: pixabay.com

Getting stressed isn’t always that bad, but if we let the condition control us, it will become damaging. So before we end up getting a severe mental condition, we should start thinking less about the things that don’t matter. “Some stress is unavoidable but if you can keep perspective then it can be a whole lot easier.” Gretchen Flores, MA LPC LCPC said.

A psychiatrist is a mental health professional who can also provide psychotherapy services and prescribe psychiatric medications. Since they can facilitate talk therapy sessions, they must possess the necessary skills. What type of skills must a psychiatrist possess? Specific abilities build a great psychiatrist, and mainly those are the following:

Compassion

Source: flickr.com

“A Psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health issues and has specific training in medication for depression.” Dr. Chantal Gagnon, PhD LMHC, explains. Psychiatrists who possess a sense of compassion for their children and adult patients are indeed helpful for a person’s recovery. With that, they can treat patients and their families adequately and with a useful approach.

Communication

Communication is an essential ingredient that makes a psychiatrist special. As their patients require immediate action, staying in touch can help them overcome their illnesses – while shaping a patient’s mind with optimism and letting the patient’s inner heart speak. Take communication and connection among the most critical elements of full and genuine recuperation.

Reasoning

A psychiatrist with strong reasoning abilities can identify and analyze a patient’s possible condition and will decide the course of action to be taken.

Critical Thinking

Source: flickr.com

With years of educational experience, psychiatrists should think outside of the box when identifying and diagnosing a patient’s mental problem. Critical thinking is a must when dealing with these topics of expertise.

Interpersonal Skills

As important as communication are interpersonal skills, which are also demanded in psychiatrists as they interact with patients of different mental health conditions daily, and they must have different interpersonal skills in communicating with them. Karla Helbert, LPC, E-RYT, C-IAYT, states that “During therapy, we may work on communication skills, stress relief, relaxation, self-expression, or ways to cope with the stresses of daily life, depending on the person, and his or her needs and development.”

Evaluation

A broad sense of evaluation must be imbued in psychiatrists, as their assessment is crucial in a patient’s life. This evaluation will last for a lifetime, and a wrong one might lead to more complications regarding the condition and treatment.

Analytical

Same with evaluation skills are analytical skills that apply to the symptoms, diagnosis, and recuperation of the mental condition.

“You’re considering therapy because something doesn’t feel right. You want relief, healing, or increased insight.” Sarah Rumpf, MA, LPCC said. Luckily, most mental health professionals would know about all your options for treatment, so they should be able to refer you to the right specialist as you go along. It’s a good idea to research or ask about your potential therapist’s experience in treating conditions similar to yours. Generally though, if you will need medications, a psychiatrist will have the expertise in dealing with your case.

If you only need counseling services, then many types of therapists can help you, and they won’t be requiring the medical degree of psychiatrists since they won’t be prescribing medication. Nonetheless, be sure to check that they are licensed to be giving treatments. These people can be psychologists, social workers, or family counselors.

(If you want to know more about these professionals and their online services, you can check out this link: https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/psychologists/reasons-to-choose-an-online-psychiatrist/.)

Don’t hesitate to open up to your treatment provider regarding all your concerns about your program and your progress. Sometimes, it is merely a matter of finding an approach that works best for you.

Since no one program works for all, your psychiatrist or therapist should be able to adjust to your needs as you proceed with the treatment. If your therapist no longer seems right for you, or you feel uncomfortable with him, you can always go to someone else. The important thing is that you don’t get discouraged and continue to seek help until you find the right specialist to help you.

Have you heard of postpartum depression? Yes, postpartum depression. I had some reservations about getting pregnant when my hubby and I determined to have kids since I have a reproductive problem—more precisely, obstructed fallopian tubes.

Source: pixabay.com

However, I was shocked to learn that I had become pregnant without planning. Many things have changed since then. We became incredibly excited, and I began to picture our happiness when my kid finally arrived. I felt like I was eager to meet him, hold him in my arms, care for him, cuddle with him, and kiss him.

However, I was unaware that things sometimes work out differently (hint: mostly due to postpartum depression). Roughly, things took an unexpected turn of events.

My Personal Experience With Sadness After Birth Struggles in Motherhood

In a way, I see that I was experiencing increased risk factors for postpartum depression at the time my child came into the world. I didn’t have any experience with or handling infants before. I’m not sure exactly how to respond or what to do. I recall wondering, “What am I supposed to do now?” as I looked at him.

Others claim that things will gradually come to you after you’re done giving birth and welcoming your baby. You’ll simply know what’s going on. Regretfully, I didn’t experience that.

I still recall our initial moment with my child alone at the hospital. “He is crying,” I would usually say when I called the nurses in. “I have no idea what to do!”

Despite my husband being at my side, I would consistently have what I refer to as “unfamiliar depression” at night for unknown reasons.

Usually, that strange feeling intensifies into unexplainably depressed mood disorders, severe mood swings, and an awful state of mind. I kept this postpartum depression to myself since I certainly did not want to seem crazy.

In reality, I was not at all satisfied. I recall believing my postpartum depression would improve. Everything would eventually work out, and these emotions from postpartum depression would disappear. I had no idea that things weren’t getting better. Things were growing worse with my postpartum depression. I’m now beginning to wonder about weird things because of major postpartum depression, and my increasingly serious mental illness and emotional strain cause me baby blues, which could be a cause of a family history of postpartum depression.

Feeling Trapped In My Dreams

I had the impression that I was trapped in a dream. I wasn’t feeling like myself or like a mother. I used to act cheerful a lot because I thought perhaps I might feel that way eventually. I can’t let anybody else see this new side of me, especially with postpartum depression. I do not want them to think negatively of me because of my postpartum depression. My husband and I are unable to discuss postpartum depression for the reason that we could both get misinterpreted, or he could become confused about my postpartum depression. When my emotions from my postpartum depression take over, things will get much more problematic since I would hate everyone closest to me and isolate myself as a result of postpartum depression.

So, I Have No Options.

Source: pixabay.com

Postpartum Depression – Stress In Baby Handling

Taking good care of a baby, working full-time, striving hard to keep the house fairly organized, and squeezing in restful sleep when I could all left me feeling extremely stressed and anxious. I paid no attention to anything around me, not even to my husband postpartum. I was very preoccupied with my little one. I was aware of this. I believed I was ready for it.

When my son would cry all the time, I suddenly became irritated and occasionally yelled at him. It doesn’t matter whether he’s a newborn. Whenever I could, I would scream and shout at him to relieve the mental strain and depression. He couldn’t help it, and I am aware that it wasn’t his fault. That was not the kind of mom I wanted to be like!

I used to cry when I was sad, often for a few days at a time or for no apparent reason at all. I couldn’t make it to the office because, regardless of how hard I tried my hardest, once I started crying, there would be no putting an end to it. My crying was that bad.

The Diagnosis

To schedule an appointment, I ultimately had to call my doctor. Although I knew very little about postpartum depression, I began to suspect that I was suffering from it. Upon visiting my physician, I completed an assessment form to treat postpartum depression.

It dawned on me that I had been deceitful about postpartum depression because I had put all those sentiments away and believed I would soon feel better. I had to force myself to say what was happening this time.

After receiving a postpartum depression diagnosis during my previous pregnancy, I began taking antidepressants. I was crying so much trouble sleeping so much that I could not work despite taking the meds. It took me approximately three months to get it under control, so I had to take a leave of absence from work for that period.

Overall, I would still occasionally feel like I wasn’t quite myself, and my healthcare providers needed to increase the prescription dosage for my postpartum depression several times due to this.

I was also recommended to attend an appointment with a therapy counselor by a healthcare provider and medical professional for my postpartum depression. When I initially visited the counselor, he advised me to ask for support because I was taking on too much. I decided to continue to think he was wrong, even if I strangely believed he was correct. I think I can manage on my own and don’t believe I need assistance. The therapist went on to say that individuals suffering from untreated postpartum depression tend to either do nothing at all or be a “push it” person.

That’s where I knew I was the go, go, go, person.

It wasn’t until I spoke with a psychotherapist that I understood that my cleaning habit was compulsive and that it was perfectly acceptable to occasionally skip doing the dishes postpartum. I have since established a list of chores that I attempt to complete daily to avoid becoming overly stressed and possibly experiencing postpartum depression and psychosis the following day.

Confrontation With The Therapist

The therapist also pointed out that I needed to set aside time for myself and encouraged me to take steps to make sure I did so each night. I felt that doing this would help me be the most compassionate mother I can be for my baby, providing my child with everything he requires. This will also enable me to deal with my postpartum depression.

The mental health professional pointed out that it is hardly self-care to simply retire to bed once my son has fallen asleep. In addition to finding stuff I enjoy doing, I had to dedicate time to my family members and husband as well.

Because I am so preoccupied with looking after my little one, it was difficult for me to come up with ideas for activities I would enjoy doing. Additionally, since we can care for the baby at the same time, both my husband and I have the opportunity to spend a lot of time together. Thus, I didn’t give that counsel any thought. Nevertheless, I received a few recommendations on my postpartum depression and opinions concerning what to do if I feel overly overwhelmed or if I suddenly get angry or upset.

The therapist’s recommendations to deal with postpartum depression have all been very beneficial to me. Finding out what I enjoy doing, what seems to work and what doesn’t for me, and what is most important to my spouse and me has required a lot of introspection and soul-searching on my part. I’ve discovered that I appreciate activities that I was not particularly eager to engage in before having a child.

Source: pixabay.com

There Are Better Times To Come After Childbirth

I believe that I am in an extremely positive position now that I have been, despite having to experience postpartum depression for about nine months. I genuinely feel at ease and like myself again. In addition, I think my relationship with my son is now pure. Perhaps all of my experience with postpartum depression has improved me as a person compared to before I ever had a child.

Sadly, postpartum depression and bipolar disorder are stigmatized and should not be spoken in such a private manner. I wish mothers who are experiencing mental health issues, like depression, could share their stories with others and work together to find solutions for postpartum depression.

I want individuals with depression to know that reaching out to others won’t make them feel alone, unloved, or shamed. They will recover, and assistance is available for people dealing with postpartum depression. I really think that my early postpartum checkup for symptoms of postpartum depression was intended for me in order to support and raise awareness of this mental health issue. So, to all other moms out there, don’t let your mental and emotional health strain you, and this can be discussed with other moms out there via support groups.

Our mental well-being and postpartum depression symptoms are important and deserve to be talked about through talk therapy, or any form of therapy that our mental health provider tells us.
