On the pars, small budget films that were made without superstars were partially successful. With Sun Pictures releasing the most low profiled films ‘Kadhalil Vizhundhen’, ‘Thennavattu’ and ‘Dindukal Saarathi’, they witnessed grand triumph…

Endhiran - Starring Rajnikanth in dual roles, Aishwarya Rai is the female lead while Chakravarthy is performing the baddie role. Director Shankar has been striding to complete the film soon and plans are to release it by December.

Kandasamy - Can’t exactly figure out why Vikram is taking whole lot of time in completing each of his films. Kandasamy started rolling before a year and yet uncompleted. Sources have revealed that film would be hitting screens on May 1, 2009. Directed by Susi Ganesh, Shriya Charan stars opposite Vikram in female lead.

Villu - Vijay ’s previous couple of films ‘ATM’ and ‘Kuruvi’ were flops and now the duo combo Prabhu Deva-Vijay is sure about striking gold with ‘Villu’. The promos were released yesterday on all satellite channels and interestingly they’re mindblowing. The film is getting released for Pongal with around 200 prints alone in Tamil Nadu.

ASAL - here goes another duo combo Saran-Ajith Kumar. It was a great triumph with ‘Kadhal Mannan’, ‘Amarkalam’ and ‘Attagasam’. Produced by Sivaji Productions, the combination is anticipated to make a great entertainer. Sameera Reddy pairs up with Ajith Kumar and Harris Jayaraj scores music. The film will start rolling from February end and plans are to release it for Diwali.

Ayan - Getting felicitated with best accolades for ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’, Surya is all set to make it big with K.V. Anand’s ‘Ayan’. K.V. Anand came up with his best debut directorial in ‘Kana Kanden’ and he is sure about making it bigger with Surya. Thamannah is the female lead while Prabhu dons an important character. Harris Jayaraj scores music.

Naan Kadavul - ‘2008 hasn’t been a great year for me as there were none of my release. But I am about this year as Naan Kadavul is set ready for release’ said Aarya during the audio launch of Naan Kadavul yesterday…. Directed by Bala, the film is set at the backdrops of an offbeat theme. With Pooja in female lead, Ilayaraja scores music while plans are to release the film for Pongal.

Sarvam - Followed by grand success of Billa, Vishnuvardhan has taken almost a year to make his next film ‘Sarvam’. Shooting is almost completed and probably Aarya can look out for double cheers this year. Chakravarthy is the baddie over here and Trisha dons female lead and Yuvan Shankar Raja scores music.

Peraanmai - ‘Jeyam’ Ravi who can turn successful without his brother Raja’s combination has better hopes with Director Jananathan’s ‘Peraanmai’. Nevertheless, Hollywood’s super actor Roland Kickinger starring opposite as baddie is something ridiculous. Roland’s forehand is almost the size of Ravi’s face and Just imagine their combination… Ayngaran has produced the film.

Aayirathil Oruvan - A very long time after Pudupettai’s success. Selvaraghavan has completed shooting 99% of the film. Paruthiveeran fame Karthi, Reema Sen, Andrea and Parthiban don important roles in the film. According to the sources, it’s an adventure/fantasy/drama where the story travels from 13th century to this year. G.V. Prakash has scored music and V. Ravindran of Media Valley Entertainment has produced this film.

Ashokavanam - Despites being dubbed ‘Guru’ made great collections here in Tamil Nadu. Ace filmmaker Mani Rathnam is set making bilingual film ‘Ashokavanam’ and ‘Raavana’ in Hindi and Tamil. The Tamil version has Vikram and Aishwarya in lead roles with Prithviraj appearing in negative shades while Prabhu and Karthik have vital roles to play. The Hindi version has Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in female lead and Vikram donning baddie role. A.R. Rahman scores music for the versions while Anil Dirubhai Ambani produces the film.

Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam - Gowtham Menon utters, ‘It may not be so powerful as Vaaranam Aayiram, but it’s a movie that has an interesting theme’. The film deals with group of youngsters working in call centres for night shifts and problems faced by them. Debutant Suresh along with Gowtham assistants’ (most of them are those who played Surya’s friend in Vaaranam Aayiram) dons lead role along with Trisha.

Trisha to play the role of an Anglo Indian girl

Trisha will soon be seen in the Vishnuvardhan directed ’ Sarvam ’ that stars Arya and if it goes on to be successful, there could be another spurt in her career graph which has not been very impressive of late.

The yet-to-be-named Vetri Maaran film would be shot completely in Madurai and shooting is to begin on the 15th of February. A never-seen-before Dhanush (with mastery over the Madurai diction) is expected to be part of a riveting storyline that also involves a love affair with an Anglo Indian girl. After Polladhavan’s success, Dhanush has been keen to work with the same team hoping to recreate the success. Sexy Bipasha Basu is proper security arrangements

Bipasha Basu had left shooting of Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Lamhaa ’ in the Kashmir valley in mid way and had returned back to Mumbai owing to security reasons, but now Basu is back in Kashmir for the shoot after the producer and director assured her of proper security arrangements.

Sanjay Dutt in fact proceeded to Kashmir a day ahead of her to make sure the atmosphere is conducive to her safety. The producer Bunty Walia has met the Deputy General of Police in Kashmir who has appointed a senior-rank officer to take charge and provide all the required security force to cordon off the areas where the film will be shot.

Speaking candidly for the first time on why she left Kashmir suddenly during their schedule in November, Bipasha says, “Too much was made out of the whole thing. Lamhaa is a difficult film. There was bound to be ups and downs. The producer and director knew why I left. A certain amount of security was promised. The first seven days were absolute chaos. There was disorganization and lack of security. Beyond that I really don’t care what people say.”

Bipasha is very clear on her security issues. “Yes, my work is my life. But then I’ve a life beyond work. I’m not going to risk my life unnecessarily for any film. Who comes to hold your hand when you’re in pain? Let’s be optimistic. This time hopefully we’ll shoot without any trouble. Let’s be sensible about it. Lamhaa is a sensible film.”

So, now we have Bipasha, Sanjay Dutt and Kunal Kapoor shooting in the Dal Lake of Kashmir in freezing January. Bipasha also got the leave from the producer for one night on Wednesday to dance for an awards function then return the next morning.

Said the actress, “Yes I came back for the awards on Wednesday night for just one evening. I reached just in time to get into my costume and rush to the stage. It went really well.”

Villu, Prabhu Deva’s next directorial venture (with Vijay and Nayantara paired together for the first time) is readying for release on January 12th. Meantime, Prabhu Deva, who spoke to a select gathering of the media, revealed a little bit about what Vijay fans can expect from the film.

Music director Devi Sri Prasad being the music composer and Prabhu Deva being one of the lyrics writers (albeit unknowingly), Villu is all about non-stop entertainment. The first half is full of fun and frolic, with Vadivelu and Vijay raising a lot of belly laughs; the second half is very racy and styled along the lines of a James Bond film.

Prabhu Deva said five dance choreographers who had been his students have worked on the film, so audiences can expect quite a storm onscreen! At the same meet, Vijay stated he wished to watch the film in a regular theatre surrounded by his fans and that care has been taken to give audiences, especially his fans, the maximum entertainment that can be loaded into two and a half hours.Pokkiri, which was Prabhu Deva’s directorial debut in Tamil, starred Vijay and Asin. Shooting in the thick jungles of Kerala may sound cool, but Ash-and-Abhi we’re sure won’t mind treading places with anyone who wishes to be in their shoes. The couple was shooting for Mani Ratnam’s next, tentatively titled Ravana in Kerala. And never mind the adventure part of it all, shooting in the thick forests was proving to be pretty dangerous.

A unitwala informs us that Aishwarya Rai was bitten by a leech on the first day of shoot there. "The jungle is full of leeches, snakes and other wild animals that director Mani Ratnam had had to hire local snake catchers to deal with such problems," we are told. But our Tarzan and Jane Bachchan aren’t complaining at all, and are taking every blood sucker in their stride.

Kareena Kapoor is on a high. She is getting one film offer every day and receives more than 300 SMSes daily. The actress says her career has started looking up ever since Saif Ali Khan entered her life.

“Saif is extremely loving and supportive. In fact, the best phase of my career started when Saif came into my life. Now he’s enjoying this phase in my life along with me. That makes this phase even more special,”Kareena told IANS.

Many people gave her relationship with Saif no more than six months. Reacting to that, Kareena said: “There’s absolutely no room for such negativity in my life. I only have place for people who are positive and who make me happy by sharing in my happiness.

“This is the best phase in my life. And I feel I’m in a place where I’ve never been before.

Commenting upon her career, she said: “I’m a lucky girl. I’m being offered one film every day. Normally a Bollywood actress does about 40 days’ work. My directors are taking about 100 days with me. I’ve already given Karan (Johar) 100 days for his film directed by Rensil D’Silva.”

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: What are you doing in this guy-oriented cast of Rajkumar Hirani’s “Three Idiots”?

A: I’ve an effective role. And no power on this earth would’ve made me miss the chance of working with Hirani. I’m a lucky girl. I’m being offered one film every day. I don’t have time to read scripts. I’ll do so in March 2009 after I finish my current lot of films which includes Karan Johar’s film with Saif. Normally a Bollywood actress does about 40 days’ work. My directors are taking about 100 days with me. I’ve already given Karan 100 days for his film directed by Rensil D’Silva.

Q: Looking back, has it been a turbulent year for you?

A: I wouldn’t call it turbulent. It was an exciting phase in my life when so many things rushed down on me at the same time. The last year was a turning-point in my life. But the end result is happy. Both, professionally and emotionally, I think I’ve come out a winner. I’ve tried to be as dignified about my personal life as possible. As for my work, god has been kind.

Q: Do you think you’re lucky?

A: It’s not just luck. I’ve worked really hard to get here. It’s my perseverance that has got me where I am. And I owe my success to no one else but myself.

Q: Perseverance? You’ve begun to sound like Saif.

A: Yes, my vocabulary has increased. He makes me memorise some pages of the Oxford dictionary every day, ha ha. That’s a joke. But seriously, he does speak very well. So I’m trying to catch up.

Q: Who’s your favourite Khan?

A: Ah-ha. Do I have to spell it out?

Q: Is there anything you want?

A: I have it all. For me, the journey as an actress has just begun. And I’m not going to shift focus from it for four-five years.

Q: No marriage for four-five years?

A: I know, I definitely want to. But not at least for three years. The work I’m doing is giving me so much satisfaction. No 28-year-old can ask for more.

Q: People gave your relationship with Saif no more than six months?

A: There’s absolutely no room for such negativity in my life. I only have place for people who are positive and who make me happy by sharing in my happiness. This is the best phase in my life. And I feel I’m in a place where I’ve never been before. As an actress I feel everyone and that includes me, expects things from me that are not generally expected from Bollywood actresses except maybe Kajol. Or my sister Karisma.

Q: Do you get enough time with Saif?

A: He’s extremely loving and supportive. He knows how long it’s taken me to get the work that I’m getting now. In fact, the best phase of my career started when Saif came into my life. Now he’s enjoying this phase in my life along with me. That makes this phase even more special. The only thing I miss is time with my family and Saif. When I finish this schedule I head straight to Venice for Sajid Nadiadwala’s “Kambakht Ishq{rsquo}{rsquo}.

Q: Are you and Saif doing a lot of endorsements together?

A: We’re offered a lot of endorsements. But we are not doing any except a shampoo brand (Head & Shoulders). But we’ll soon be signing on for endorsements. And we’re doing another film for Asthvinayak. That starts in April 2009. We want it to be a fast and furious action film. Something larger-than-life. Saif is working very closely with the producers. He’s trying to lock in on the script and director.

Q: You’ve changed so much in appearance and behaviour.

A: Ha, that’s what you think. I’m still the same. It’s just that I’m so busy. I’ve been working constantly. On top of that my house is being done up. There’re a dozen things demanding my attention. I get 300 SMSes a day. I can’t answer them personally.

Hollywood Action Director Jack Gill Helps Actress Kajol On Action Scenes

Ajay Devgan and Kajol shot some really stunning action scenes recently in Mehboob Studios for their forthcoming film, Toonpur Ka Superhero. Hollywood action director Jack Gill, whose work repertoire includes big action successes like the Spider-Man and Superman series as well as The Rock and Terminator 2, was at the helm of the affairs.It is learnt that while Kajol was a little apprehensive of the difficult action scenes, Jack managed to convince her to go ahead without fear.

“Kajol is quite a lot like my wife in the sense that she does not want to do action. She likes love stories and drama. I kind of identify with her. She is a beautiful lady but I had to coax her to do the stunt with Ajay. It was not a very difficult shot, but I could see fear in her eyes. She is not comfortable with it, like Julia Roberts who does not like action at all. Julia had this fear of heights and I had to go slow with her. It took her a while to get used to it, too,” Jack tells us.

Jack had in mind Ajay’s ‘action hero’ image before he began the actual shoot. “But it took a while for him to get back to action…. He was sore for the first three to four weeks. He didn’t realise that it would get so rigorous,” explains Jack.”Along with the equipment, we had something called the cage. It lifts the actor high up in the air 20 to 30 metres and twists his body, spiraling him up to the camera. He’s looking up at the camera as it is above him. Lifting the camera and actor as one piece of machinery can make anyone feel dizzy. It’s tough but Ajay picked it up fast,” reveals the action director.

But shooting in Mumbai has not been easy ride for Jack. Says he, “We got cutting edge equipment from the US, which was a first for any Bollywood film. It was a new technique for them and was taxing. Especially the manual hydraulic devices, which can pull you up from one place and fly you across stage and land you right in front of the camera. If you don’t handle the rig properly it can break your legs.”

Today, with talk of recession and pay cuts and power cuts, can the ultra-insulated film world be left behind? Now rumours of big stars taking salary cuts as producers struggle to stay afloat are surfacing. The big corporates that stepped into the South Indian film world and paid the stars any price they asked are now being cautious in projects they take on.Shriya is one of the first female stars to cross the magic amount of one crore per film. Now, she is extremely hurt by gossip that she has slashed her fee drastically, gossip that is creating confusion on her career front.

A national newspaper quoted her as saying, “I have no clue how such rumours originate. It’s not that I demand a hefty sum for my work. In fact, I have done movies without any pay. I have not demanded big money for Deepa Mehta’s What’s Cooking, Stella? or the Hollywood film. It’s not because of recession that I am cutting down on my pay. The industry needs money to flourish and at such hard times, I don’t think I will choose money over good movies. I always give importance to the script. At the end of the day, it’s all about having a nice movie in your kitty.”

Her Hollywood film, The Other End of the Line, an English film produced by Ashok Amritraj is now running in US theatres; Shriya is eagerly waiting for it to release in India. Though she had no releases in Kollywood or Tollywood this year, she is involved in many other projects, one of which is Kandasamy (Tamil) starring Vikram, titled Mallanna in Telugu. She has also signed up for Vishal’s next project Thoranai and another untitled flick with Dhanush.

Namitha has suddenly filed a complaint at the Nadigar Sangam. Thee, directed and produced by Kitcha, is all set to release. Namitha has now alleged that her full salary has not been paid for the movie. She strongly feels that her salary will not be paid once the movie is released.

And has urged the Nadigar Sangam to act on her behalf before the movie hits the theatres. Secretary Radha Ravi is looking into the complaint and has already passed on the matter to the Producer’s Council.

The forthcoming Nayanthara-Karthi starrer has the fans’ expectations soaring high. The film, titled Payya, will be directed by Lingusamy. Speaking about the film and Nayanthara in particular, Lingusamy said that Payya’s storyline revolves entirely on the highways of Bangalore-Mumbai route. What happens in a car forms the crux of Payya, he elaborated.

On selecting Nayan for the role, Lingusamy said that she is the best actress who has all the qualities that Sridevi had. He added that Nayan’s acting skills will be showcased in Payya. The actress might even be paid a crore for it

The film’s shooting will commence on December 15th in Bangalore and go on for 20 days. Lingusamy is teaming up yet again with music director Yuvan Shankar Raja after their association in Sandakozhi.
