The Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation is looking for golfers, sponsors and donors to participate in our 2017 Golf Tournament and Celebration dinner to be held on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Sterling Farms Golf Course.

2017 Scholarship Packet

The Allyson Rioux Memorial Award recognizes a top female athlete in Stamford with a $5,000 award towards higher education.

Criteria for nomination:

1. Senior female athlete from a Stamford public or private high school.
2. Nominee must have participated in and competed in one or more varsity level high school sports or teams. Recommendations in multiple sports or multiple seasons are heavily weighted.
3. Nominee must exemplify sportsmanship, leadership, excellent character and athletic prowess.

Thank you for your generosity to the Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation. More importantly, thank you for your involvement with the 26th annual Allyson Rioux Memorial Golf Tournament and Celebration Dinner. The day was a huge success thanks to a fabulous turnout and participation of so many.

That generosity and outpouring of support exceeded our expectations, and enabled us to provide a significant donation to this year’s beneficiary, Perry Mihaleas. The money raised will help offset major medical expenses and allow him to focus on improving his health. We thank you for your support in making this happen for him and his family.

2014 Award Winners Announce - Claire Howlett and Stephanie Roones

Claire Howlett – Westhill High School, 2014

Claire spends plenty of her time in running shoes! She is a three sport runner, participating in Cross Country in the fall; Indoor track in the winter; and Outdoor track in the spring. While at Westhill, she was Captain of all three teams. During the Cross Country season she set school records in the 5000m and the 4000m. She was 1^st Team All-FCIAC, All-State and All-New England.

During the Indoor Track season Claire was the FCIAC champion in both the 1600m and 3200m events. She won the LL Championship in the 1600m, and was runner-up in the 3200m. She placed 3^rd at the National Championship and was all named All-American. She set school records in the 1000m, 1600m, 3000m, 3200m and 5000m races.

During the Outdoor Track season Claire set a FCIAC championship record in the 1600m with a time of 4:48.19. She was also the FCIAC 3200m champion. During the Outdoor Nationals on June 15^th, she placed 3^rd in the 5K with a time of 16:46.74.

Claire will be continuing her running career at the collegiate level when she leaves this fall for Stanford University. Congratulations Claire and much continued success to you at the next level.

Stephanie Roones – Westhill High School, 2014

Stephanie is a three sport scholar athlete at Westhill High School, excelling at the varsity level in Volleyball, Basketball and Track & Field. Every sport season Stephanie led a different team, appointed Captain for all three sports.

During the fall season, Stephanie earned All-FCIAC and All-State honors in Volleyball. She was also named MVP.

During the winter season, she earned All-FCIAC honors in basketball and again was named Co-MVP of her team.

During the spring season, Stephanie placed first in the Javelin at the FCIAC championship, with a 128’ 08” throw. She also set a Westhill record in the Javelin. Stephanie also participated in the Discus event.

In addition to participating in these three sports, Stephanie has all played soccer and lacrosse. She truly epitomizes the multi-sport athlete.

We wish Stephanie continued success as she begins her collegiate experience at Monmouth University in the fall.

Scholarship Award Winners Announced

We are pleased to announce TWO 2013 Allyson Rioux Scholarship Award Winners!

Rose Rather

Rose is a three sport standout athlete, having competed in Field Hockey and Lacrosse at King and Ice Hockey for Rye Country Day. Rose was Captain of her field hockey team and also received both All League and All New England awards, leading her team with 10 goals and 10 assists her senior year. Rose’s real love is Ice Hockey, starting out in the Squirt travel program at the age of six.

Although attending classes at King, Rose played two years for the Rye Country Day ice hockey team as King does not have a team. As a junior she earned All-League honors and lead the league in both goals (62) and assists (27). In her senior year, Rose set the Rye all-time leading scorer record with a total of 163 points. She completed her senior year with 48 goals and 26 assists. The pinnacle of her ice hockey career to date has been playing in the U.S. Nationals four times, competing against the top women ice hockey players in the country. The next stop for Rose is the College of Holy Cross where she will be a member of the Ice Hockey Team.

In her application essay, Rose stated a saying that has motivated her throughout her athletic career, “if you don’t know how to fail, then you won’t know how to pick yourself up”. Athletics has also shaped Rose’s life. For every sport she played, she always knew there was a higher level to attain. Above all, she believes athletics can teach you life skills far beyond the field. Rose’s coaches all talked about her ability to use those life skills.

According to Elizabeth Oxler, Rose’s field hockey coach at King, beyond her athletic abilities, Rose always took the time in practice to work with younger players individually and was always the first one to run and jug a player when they scored a goal or made a great move. Elizabeth also said so eloquently about Rose, “Rose was our most valuable player because she made the team her most valuable possession”. Lastly she said, “when thinking about adjectives such as gracious and generous spirit used to describe Allyson Rioux, I am aware that those are also words used to describe Rose Rather”.

These exact words were expressed by Rye Country Day girls ice hockey coach Gil Castagna as he described Rose along with Cooperative, sportsmanlike and organized.

Megan D’Alessandro

Megan is a three sport standout athlete at Westhill High School competing and excelling at Volleyball, Basketball and Softball. In this her senior year, she has been named Captain of all three sports. Megan has received All-FCIAC honors in both volleyball and basketball and has also received All-State honors in basketball. Megan is a true student athlete. She was both a News Channel 12 Scholar Athlete and a MSG Varsity Athlete selection.

In her application essay Megan said participating in athletics has many benefits, both tangible and intangible. While the tangible ones of exercise and awards are nice, the intangible ones of mental strength and integrity are what have influenced her the most. Megan truly practices what she believes. Her three coaches, Ali Walsh, Mike King and Tom Pia all commented on her amazing work ethic, her leadership strength both in the classroom and on their teams and her ability to garner the respect of her teammates. Mike King summed Megan perfectly when he said “Both Megan and Allyson share similar qualities; athletic success across three sports, academic prowess, being a winner, being a fighter, having a willingness to work hard and a passion for sports.”

Megan ended her essay stating how grateful she is to the women that paved the way for her by fighting tirelessly in passing Title IX and allowing equality for women in athletics. She called Allyson a trail-blazer who made playing three sports with a drive to succeed possible. Megan has also successfully accomplished the same.

The Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation and the Award Committee is thrilled to have Rose & Megan join our list of amazing student athletes.

2013 Beneficiary - Ed Schulte

Hello Friends - we are pleased to announce our second Beneficiary for the 2013 Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation:

Ed Schulte was recently diagnosed with Invasive Adenocarcinoma. Ed's treatments will be long and extensive, even before surgery, and will continue after as well. He has a challenging road ahead of him but with the love and support of his family, wife Cindy and children, Rachel and Eddie, as well as numerous friends, he is prepared to fight this disease. Eddie and his wife Cindy are self employed owners of Cindy and Eddie's Barbershop in Springdale.

We hope you will help support both Ed Schulte and Riley Perna through our Foundation.

2013 Beneficiary - Riley Perna

We are pleased to announce our first beneficiary for the 2013 Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation.

Riley June Perna was born prematurely weighing 1 pound 8 ounces on January 7, 2009 at Yale Children’s Hospital. She remained there for 9 months after her birth. Riley has several medical conditions which include Cerebral Palsy, Bilateral Hearing Loss, Cortical Vision Loss, Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Congenital Hypotonia, Subglotic Stenosis and G-Tube Dependence.

Riley cannot sit independently, crawl, walk, talk, close her mouth, suck or swallow. Despite her disabilities, she attends school, with a nurse, at St. Vincent’s Special Needs School in Trumbull, Connecticut. There she receives Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech & Language and Vision Therapies.

Parents, Greg and Jennifer, have privately funded alternative therapies such as Hyberbaric Therapy, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Medic Physical Therapy and Oral Motor Therapy. Some of these therapies are partially covered insurance. However, most are not and are extremely expensive.

Within the last year they have seen a significant change in Riley due to the combination of intense standard and alternative therapies she receives. Through therapy, their hope for Riley is that she will strengthen her core so she can sit up, walk, swallow and eventually have her tracheostomy removed.

Cross Country Meet Benefits The Rioux Foundation!

The Stamford Public Middle School Cross Country City Championship will benefit the Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation.

This City Championship will be held on Thursday, October 25th at 3:00PM at Cove Island Park in Stamford.

Each participant of the meet will be asked to collect "pledges" and raise funds for the Allyson Rioux Memorial Foundation. These funds will be gifted to Bryce Klingel, son of Cloonan Middle School Track Coach, Bobbi Barhydt.

Here is a little bit about Bryce in his mom's words:

Bryce is 4 months old and has a very rare congenital condition called Neurocutaneous Melanocytosis. There are 24 people in the world registered with this condition. It is so rare that it is not recognized by NORD - it is considered an orphan disease.

Being so rare there is no funding for research and there is no cure. As a family we have decided to raise money for his doctors so they can research and hopefully help him live longer than expected.

Bryce has had complications from his condition. He was shunted for hydrocephalus at 1 month old, started having seizures at 2 months old, and had a feeding tube put in to help gain weight and nutrition at 3 months old. He has been hospitalized for multiple days 3 times. He has had 2 mri's, many ultrasounds and x rays and a PET scan. He currently has home nursing checks and many doctor appointments.

He has been to Hartford, NYC and Texas to see doctors and is going to Chicago and possibly Boston. We go to the doctor at least once a week with Bryce for weight checks and check-ins to make sure he is maintaining or gaining strength and skills. Children with this condition usually do not make it to be a teenager- many die in the first year or as a toddler.

Inspite of all this Bryce is the happiest little boy. He loves his big brother and he always has a smile on his face. He can brighten a room in a moment. In one way or another he is going to make a difference in this world. He is very strong and even though he does not know it.... he is our blessing- He has taught us more in 4 months than I have ever imagined to learn.

We have met some fantastic people along his journey and we will continue to fight with Bryce! He is our love.
