Kelly says: It will be clear to readers that this post was written by MyEmissionsExchange.com, but I want to emphasize that I was not compensated for it in anyway. Lots of people pitch stories and post ideas, many companies try to get me to talk about their products, but I’m very selective about who I mention.

I found MyEmissionsExchange.com to be an intruiging idea- a great way to combine being green and being frugal. I liked the idea behind the company so much that, instead of having them advertise on the site, I asked if they’d be willing to write a guest post.

Earn cash for saving energy on new free website

By Marissa Miraval, My Emissions Exchange

As much as the “green revolution” is upon us, we’re not seeing much of an increase in consumer consciousness. To the average family, cutting energy use around the house may seem like a daunting and costly process. Solar panels are expensive, green products cost more than comparable products, and re-insulating one’s home may not be a step that the average consumer is ready to take. Put simply, there’s just not enough incentive to reduce household energy consumption.

However, we know that incentives work. According to the Container Recycling Institute, states that implemented bottle return incentives experienced a 70-85% reduction in beverage container litter – even a 30-35% reduction in overall litter.

To align economic and environmental interest, MyEmissionsExchange.com has captured this idea, and developed an incentive for home energy conservation. The idea behind My Emissions Exchange is to create a market for individuals to sell personal carbon credits, where you reduce your utility bill at home, and earn extra cash for it.

With MyEmissionsExchange.com, individual households and businesses can “earn green for going green” by demonstrating that they have reduced their electric, natural gas, propane, or fuel oil bill. The reductions are sold on the voluntary credit market, and retain value much like traditional offsets. The difference here is addressing the demand side of the equation – instead of planting a tree in the Amazon to offset the value, My Emissions Exchange motivates individuals to conserve.

To get started, users sign up and input one recent utility bill (since most utility bills display a year’s worth of billing history). As users reduce their energy usage, the reductions are verified by MyEmissionsExchange and certified as “personal carbon credits.” These credits are then sold on the voluntary market to large companies looking to demonstrate their environmental commitment. There are various companies that choose this path – from IKEA to Timberland, from Dell to Yahoo. Finally, the profits from the sale are deposited directly into MyEmissionsExchange.com users’ PayPal accounts for the users to spend any way they like.

The average household can save $400 a year on its utility bills and earn an additional $70 by selling the resulting personal carbon credits through MyEmissionsExchange. To those who are concerned about how to conserve around the home, MyEmissionsExchange.com offers no-hassle ways to immediately cut 10 percent off a user’s utility bills.

As a recent Time Magazine article quoted, “by appealing to our checkbooks instead of our conscience, My Emissions Exchange might help reduce U.S. carbon emissions better than a stack of hectoring environmental reports.” In the current economy, with consumers looking to get the most out of every dollar, and companies looking to become more sustainable, MyEmissionsExchange provides a crossroads for conservation. The website mantra, “Be Green, Earn Green” says it all.

What do you think about the prospect of earning cash for reducing your home energy use?

How much is a tooth worth nowadays?

My oldest son is losing his first tooth. He’s very proud, and I’m a bit emotional. My baby’s growing up after all! So it seems as though the Tooth Fairy, and her French counterpart the Tooth Mouse, are going to be visiting our house soon.

Traditionally of course, the tooth fairy leaves something under the pillow in exchange for the tooth. I remember getting some special presents, like books, or sometimes just money: a quarter!. And of course I’ll be doing that for my son- in fact at lunchtime I went out and bought him a little Playmobile set with a puppeteer and two puppets.

But this makes me think about how to mark special occasions frugally, or at least conscientiously.

Some close friends of ours got married this past weekend. As they had been living together for several years, they didn’t register for gifts. Instead, they asked people to give them money for their honeymoon; we gave them a €50 note. I don’t resent giving them money, or that amount of money, I’d rather contribute to their honeymoon experience rather than give them something they don’t really need. But, for some reason, I don’t like them knowing how much I gave them- it feels awkward to me, like I’m subconsciously trying to compete, or at least keep up with the Joneses. If I had bought them a gift, I doubt I would have spent €50 on it, but somehow €20 would have seemed cheap.

Someone told me not to long ago about a system, a website I think, where you can buy people experiences. For example, a couple will sign up for a honeymoon package, and choose all the things they want to do: scuba diving, dinners out, theater dates, whatever. Then people will choose what they want to pay for, and contribute the full amount, or even just part of it.

I like this idea better than just giving them cash. It feels more personal, less mercenary. I know this comes from my father- he refuses to buy people gift certificates for the very same reason!

How do you mark special occasions? Do you give cash? Gifts? Experiences?

A little known secret of the restaurant industry is its easy ability to cause its patrons to spend more money than they would have otherwise. This does not come from the lure or temptation of food, but rather from the layout of the restaurant’s menu. By not placing dollar signs next to the prices on the menu, the restaurant sends signals to the customer that the prices are not actually money, which thereby causes the person to spend more than they would have liked. In a downward economy, this type of ploy makes all the difference in the restaurant business.

This study by the Cornell University School of Hospitality Research tested different visitors to St. Andrew’s restaurant in Hyde Park, New York with menus that had the price listed as dollar increments, simple numbers, and numbers that are written out ($20, 20, or twenty). The customers would spend more when the amount was written out in words, although it was determined that this was due to the lack of a currency sign next to the number. This survey has been well determined within the restaurant industries, with more and more businesses advertising their food without any sign of currency on their menu. Customers were found to spend 8 percent more without a dollar sign through this study, though it was surprising that the spelled-out format did not yield higher spending.

According to many leaders of the study, people who are more price conscious tend to add up prices in their head when going to a restaurant, but do not do this when the price is written out, or when there is no dollar sign next to it. The dollar sign inevitably comes to remind people that they are spending money, and the lack of the sign takes away this emphasis on money. Restaurants have thereby discovered that customers are more relaxed when they are not adding up the bill in their head throughout the meal, and tend to spend a bit more money as a result.

As a frugal customer, you need to be aware of this marketing ploy that many restaurants present to their customers and not fall into it. Be aware that the price is not less than you think it is, but simply looks to be less because of the lack of a currency sign. Once you add the prices up in your head regardless, you need to realize that you are still spending the same amount of money, and the price is not diminished. In this type of economy, the restaurant industry has thrived over menu upgrades such as this, although many customers are slowly learning this secret and are maneuvering ways around their psychological approach to eating.

What are your tips for being frugal at restaurants? Do you try to save as much money as possible? Or do you allow yourself to splurge on nice occasions? How often do you eat out?

In France, children start school in the September of the year they turn three; they go for three years to nursery school, or maternelle, before going to elementery school, or primaire. So while starting first grade this year isn’t quite as emotional for me as it was when he went to school for the first time, it is still a big deal.

But I digress.

In fact, my son will not be going to the same school that he has already been attending for three years; he’s been accepted into the international public school. This means that he’ll be doing most of his classes in French, but will also have some classes in English. More importantly, it means that he’ll be with other bilingual, bicultural children.

However, enrolling him in this school, although he’s already been accepted, means dealing with French bureaucracy, which, I’m sure you’ll understand is a frustrating affair, to say the least.

The other day I decide to tackle the unpleasant chore of submitting his paperwork. I decided to leave the kids with my in-laws, so I drove from my end of town to their house. Then I drove from their house to the Prefecture, or city administration headquarters, to enroll my son. Once I got there (and paid for parking), however, I decided to look at the letter of admission one last time before going inside. Lo and behold, it said that I needed to do the paperwork at a local branch of the Mairie, or mayor’s office. When I looked at the map, the place I needed to go was back on the other side of town, near my in-laws’ house.

Grrr.

So back in the car I go, in the sweltering sun and heavy traffic. When I get to the mairie, the woman informs me that I need to bring a whole slew of other documents, photocopied and in triplicate, before she will accept our file.

The point of this story is that, had I looked at the letter of admission, and a map before setting out, I would have saved myself a whole lot of time, frustration and gas. And I find that I often do the same thing with my financial goals as well.

I often don’t take the time to read the documentation, or plot out my objectives in detail, or map where I’m going or want to go before heading on my way. And by doing so, I often feel frustratred and out of control, with no clear result at the end of the day.

I know this about myself, and I know that I need to remind myself to sit down and plan things out before I jump into things. I’m working on it, and slowly improving.

But the follow up trip to the mairie will have to wait til next week!

Do you plan things like your financial goals in advance, or just jump in feet first?
