Lately, I’ve received numerous inquiries about drawings and commissioned art for tattoos. Some might assume that artists provide these services for free, perhaps stemming from the era of pre-drawn designs known as tattoo flash.

Let’s clarify the distinction between flash and commissioned artwork for tattoos. The designs we create are tailor-made for you, incorporating years of experience in flow and body composition. These aren’t generic “flash” designs; they are unique, commissioned pieces of art crafted exclusively for each client.

The drawing fee accounts for the hours invested in creating a custom piece of art for your tattoo. Designing something that fits your body seamlessly requires considerable time and expertise. This dedication is reflected in the finished tattoos and becomes evident when your tattoo is complete.

It’s crucial to understand that you’re not purchasing ownership of the drawings or sketches; instead, you’re compensating the artist for their time, skill, and commitment to bringing your envisioned tattoo to life. Even if you bring in a design, modifications are often necessary to ensure it complements your body’s contours – an integral part of the artistic process.

For extensive pieces, multiple drawing sessions are often required. The complexity involved in creating a permanent piece for a specific body is often overlooked. Designing and refining the artwork demand more time than the actual tattooing process, but it’s a crucial step to prevent surprises during the tattooing session.

So, in essence, the drawing fee contributes to the overall cost of your tattoo. However, it’s important to note that drawing fees do not cover the session or hourly tattoo rate; they directly support the creation of the unique art you’re commissioning for your tattoo.

The Unique Challenge of Finger Tattoos: A Word of Caution

Once again, a client scheduled a small tattoo without providing specific details, only to express a desire for a finger tattoo upon arrival. With the growing popularity of finger tattoos, we find these requests becoming more frequent.

While finger tattoos serve as an excellent means of showcasing personal expression, reminders, or messages that can’t easily be concealed, they differ significantly from “traditional” tattoos.

Most individuals seeking finger tattoos conduct some research, but often, we tend to focus on the positives and best-case scenarios when exploring potential purchases.

Finger tattoos fall into what I term “novelty” tattoos. Unlike elaborate works of art found in other areas of the body, the epidermal layers on fingers are thicker, experiencing constant wear and irritation. This heightened exfoliation limits space in the dermis layer, where the ink is deposited and retained. Due to the “high traffic” nature of fingers, being used frequently throughout the day, the challenges of tattooing in these areas become apparent.

Although it is possible to tattoo fingers, the outcome is less satisfying roughly 60% of the time. Thick, blurry lines, loss of small details, and difficulty retaining color are common issues, especially when the tattoo extends beyond the top areas onto the sides, bottom, or knuckles. Most finger tattoos necessitate multiple touch-ups, and up to 40% may not endure due to the unique physiology of certain individuals’ finger makeup.

While we have extensive experience in executing finger tattoos about three times a month, those contemplating finger tattoos should be aware of the potential downsides alongside the benefits.

That’s right; If you’re looking for a tattoo, We’re looking for your story!!! We’re looking for 3-5 (maybe more) people with a great story behind the tattoo they want.

The tattoo can be big or small, completely hidden, or on even the top of your head. We prefer fresh skin, but a cover-up often has a more compelling story. What’s important here is the story of the why behind the tattoo you want!

If you want a tattoo, and you have a compelling story behind wanting it ie; life event, challenge overcome, family member(s), something inspiring, some small miracle, milestone reached, hurdles overcome, a reminder of what or what not to do again, a secret kept, etc… Then we want to hear from you!

We want to work with you to develop this tattoo into something that will truly represent your story and document it along the way. We will be giving at least one of these tattoos away, but the rest that are chosen for this project will be done at a significantly reduced rate.

Message us if this sounds like something that interests you and we’ll get into the details. Sent a Brief summary of what you want to get and don’t forget the most important part… The WHY, and we’ll go from there.
