At the age of four, my stained white t-shirt proudly bore the name Trottier with the number 19 across its back. Those flower print, iron-on decals may not have made my dingy t-shirt into an authentic Islander jersey, but those letters and numbers marked my roots as a fan.

During my own struggles as an aspiring athlete, I looked to the Islanders for inspiration, for hope, for a hero. I learned that superstars are made of raw talent and dedication. I learned that not-so-super stars are made of practice-until-you-vomit and perseverance. I learned you may not always be popular for your actions, but that the perception of others cannot affect your performance. I also learned that teams are made of unity and loyalty.

I never became an athlete, but the lessons I learned were not without merit.

Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy were stars because they had raw talent and dedication. My talent is not in sports. I find my strength in scholarship, and I am dedicated to my love of language.

Patrick Flatley was no Pat LaFontaine, but he earned the respect of his team and his fans because he worked harder than any other player I have ever seen. His perseverance made him a star in his own right. My perseverance has brought me where I am today. I’m proud to be an English teacher, and I refuse to give up my bigger dream to become a writer, no matter what the cost.

Tom Poti may not be the most popular player on the Islanders. Maybe cheers from the fans aren’t as loud for Poti, but that doesn’t mean his talent and hard work go unrecognized by his coaches or by his teammates. He succeeds in his play, holding the most ice time of any Islander. In order to succeed in my arena, I make decisions based on what I believe is right, not by what is popular.

This year, the Islanders made the playoffs. Some say it was a miracle; some, a fluke. Fans know that they made it because when it counted the most, the Islanders became a unified team. Working as a teacher, I have learned that my best work is not my work alone. That comes from the collaboration of my team of colleagues.

These lessons have made the difference in my life.

Clear your basics

मेरा पहला व्यंग्य

एक आधुनिक सन्त ने कहा है कि जो उत्पादन नहीं करता, उसे उपभोग करने का अधिकार नहीं है। इसी तर्क से मुझे लगा कि मुझे व्यंग्य लिखना चाहिए, क्योंकि बचपन से ही मुझे व्यंग्य पढ़ने में आनन्द आता रहा है। सवाल यह पैदा हुआ कि शुरुआत कहाँ से करूँ। एक पुराने सन्त ने कहा है कि सबसे पहले घर में दीया जलाना चाहिए। आधुनिकता के प्रभाव से मैं 'हम दो, हमारे दो' का शिकार हूँ। जहाँ तक बच्चों का सवाल है, वे व्यंग्य से परे हैं। मेरे दोनों बच्चों में से किसी एक के बारे में कोई कुछ कह देता है, तो माता-पिता यानी हम दोनों में वीर रस का स्राव होने लगता है। सो अगर मैं उन पर व्यंग्य करता हूँ, तो पड़ोसी महाव्यंग्य करना शुरू कर देंगे। फिर, वे मेरे ही उत्पाद हैं। उन पर व्यंग्य करना अपने आप पर ही व्यंग्य करना हो जाएगा। दूसरों की तरह मुझमें भी इतना खुलापन कहाँ।

तब ध्यान अपनी पत्नी पर गया। मैंने पाया है कि पत्नियों पर व्यंग्य करना आधुनिक हास्य परम्परा का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रस्थान है। वैसे, स्त्रियों को मूर्ख मान कर उन पर हँसने की परम्परा पुरानी है, पर इसका व्यावहारिक दोहन हिन्दी के प्रारम्भिक हास्य-व्यंग्यवादियों ने शुरू किया। पहले साली आई, फिर घरवाली। पत्नियों को व्यंग्य के केन्द्र में रखना इसलिए भी सम्भव हुआ कि प्रत्येक मध्यवर्गीय घर स्त्रियों का तिहाड़ हुआ करता था। उनको बिल्कुल पता नहीं होता था कि उनके पति बाहर क्या कह (या कर) रहे हैं। तब पुरुष लेखक बाहर बुद्धिमती स्त्री की खोज करते थे और घर में अपनी छोटी-मोटी जागीर चलाते थे। मैं यह दावा नहीं कर सकता कि मैं इस पाखंड से परे हूँ। लेकिन जब व्यंग्य की दृष्टि से अपनी पत्नी पर विचार करने लगा, तो मेरी आँखें गीली हो गईं। बेचारी कितना सहती है, फिर भी हँसमुख बनी रहती है। उस पर मैंने इतने जुल्म किए हैं कि उसके सन्दर्भ में मैं ही व्यंग्य का पात्र हूँ। सच पूछिए, तो वह समय-समय पर मुझ पर व्यंग्य कर अपने इस ऐतिहासिक कर्त्तव्य का निर्वाह करती भी रहती है। मैं तरह दे जाता हूँ, क्योंकि औरतों के मुँह कौन लगे। वे चाहें तो हम सभी पुरुषों का भाँडा फोड़ कर रख दें। पुष्टि के लिए आप मैत्रेयी पुष्पा, रमणिका गुप्ता, चंद्रकिरण सौनरिक्सा आदि की आत्मकथाएँ पढ़ सकते हैं। सो पत्नी को भी मैंने लिस्ट से निकाल दिया।

अब पड़ोसी की ओर ध्यान गया। वह बहुत ही दुष्ट है, जैसा कि अधिकतर पड़ोसी होते हैं। वह मुझसे जरा भी नहीं डरता, जैसे मैं उससे नहीं डरता। कई बार हमारे बीच नोकझोंक हो चुकी है, जिस दौरान हम एक दूसरे की आलोचना फ्री होकर करते थे। लेकिन जब उस पर व्यंग्य लिखने का विचार करने लगा, तो कई ऐसी बातों पर ध्यान गया, जिस पर पहले मेरा ध्यान नहीं गया था। बेचारा देश के एक ऐसे हिस्से से आया है, जो दशकों से अखिल भारतीय स्तर पर बदनाम है। उसके पास एमए की डिग्री है, पर उसकी बातचीत के स्तर से लगता है कि उसने यह डिग्री जरूर कहीं से चुराई (या खरीदी) होगी। लेकिन इसके बिना वह दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय में प्राध्यापक कैसे बन सकता था? शिक्षित बेरोजगारी की नई अर्थव्यवस्था में वह रोजगार और किस तरीके से हासिल कर सकता था? सो उसे माफ कर देना चाहिए।

उसकी पत्नी और बच्चे पूरी कॉलोनी के लिए एक समस्या हैं, पर गहराई से सोचने पर लगा कि इसमें उनका क्या दोष। पत्नी को आज तक एक बार भी मेंटल डॉक्टर के पास नहीं ले जाया गया और बच्चे तो ज्यादातर अपने माँ-बाप के ही सांस्कृतिक डुप्लिकेट होते हैं। फिर जैसे मेरे बच्चे, वैसे ही उसके बच्चे। मैं अगर अपने बच्चों को आदर्श नहीं बना सका, तो उसकी क्या बिसात! सो यह नजदीकी विषय भी छोड़ देना पड़ा। हाय, लेखक का कितना कच्चा माल यों ही बरबाद हो जाता है।

कई और पात्रों पर मैंने गौर से विचार किया। वे सभी व्यंग्य के बजाय सहानुभूति के पात्र ज्यादा लगे। बेचारे किसी तरह जन्म लेने की सजा भुगत रहे थे। उनमें बहुत-सी बुराइयाँ थीं, पर ज्यादातर बुराइयाँ उन्हें अपने परिवेश से मिली थीं। एक लेखक ने कहा है कि अक्सर हम उससे ज्यादा बुरे बन जाते हैं जितना ईश्वर ने हमें बनाया है। ईश्वर को इस पर विचार करना चाहिए और भविष्य में अपने माल में कम से कम बुराई डालनी चाहिए।

तभी अचानक घटाटोप के शिकार मेरे दिमाग में कौंधा कि मैं अपने बॉस को क्यों न व्यंग्य का निशाना बनाऊँ। आखिर सबसे अधिक व्यंग्य अत्याचारियों पर ही लिखे गये हैं। ऐसा सोचते-सोचते अपने बॉस के चरित्र का एक-एक गन्दा पक्ष सामने आने लगा। कुछ के बारे में मैं प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव से जानता था, कुछ के बारे में दूसरों ने बताया था। अपने बॉस के बारे में जब भी मेरे ज्ञान में वृद्धि होती थी, मैं यही सोचता था कि वह सौ-डेढ़ सौ वर्ष बाद क्यों पैदा हुआ। वह अपने समय पर पैदा हुआ होता, तो बहुत सफल सामन्त साबित होता। दफ्तर में कौन ऐसा नहीं था, जिसका नुकसान उसने न किया हो। जो अपनी नजर में नायक होते हैं, वे अक्सर दूसरों की नजर में खलनायक होते हैं। मैंने कलम चलाना शुरू कर दिया। कुछ पन्ने लिखने के बाद मुझे अपने आप पर गुस्सा आने लगा। मैं यह क्या कर रहा हूँ? ऐसे नराधम से तो खुले मैदान में दो-दो हाथ कर लेना ही ठीक है। जहाँ तलवार चलनी चाहिए, वहाँ कलम चला कर मैं अपनी तौहीन नहीं कर रहा हूँ? मेरी कलम गिर पड़ी।

इस तरह दुनिया मेरी पहली व्यंग्य रचना से महरूम रह गई।

Regarding scoring of good marks in Board Exams, it is not so difficult.
You have to stick to few important tips:

1. Firstly, study regularly, take out time for at least three subjects in
a day. Work more on those subjects, in which you feel you are weaker than other subjects.

2. Do not leave any subject for more than 2-3 days. Every subject should be taken up for study at least in every alternate day. The important and difficult ones may be taken up everyday.

3. Devote at least 6-7 hours for self study.
But do not cut down too much on your sleep and enjoyment. Take out a bit of time for relaxing and entertaining also.

4. Whenever you study, don't sit for too long continuously, you can also take one or two short breaks of 5-10 minutes during a continuous stretch of 3-4 hrs. of study.
This will help in maintaining your interest.

5. Be in touch with the CBSE previous years papers, sample papers etc. Keep on looking what has been the pattern of CBSE and what type of questions are generally asked. Also refer to their model answers.

6. Whenever you give a test in school and obtain marks, just go through your answer sheet seriously and see where marks have been deducted and how can the errors be avoided next time.

7. Take proper care of your health and hygiene. Do regular exercise, take more of green vegetables, milk and other nutritious food. Do not get tensed.

8. Although you must stick to NCERT books, but in science, maths, you must do some extra questions also. You can purchase a good book or question bank for that.

9. Be in contact with your teachers and ask them to evaluate yourself.

10. At the end of the year, do at least 8-10 model test papers for each
subject. This will help a lot.

Just keep working towards your Goal and keep on evaluating yourself.
