The calendar says Spring! But the thermometer still reads Winter. Despite the lingering cold, Mother Nature's signs are all around... Developmentally delayed by the Blizzard of February 2026, the daffodils are starting to open, and soon the trees will be sprouting buds for leaves.

Cape and Islands has said good-bye to 2025 and has embraced the New Year 2026. And of course, what is New Year's with out a list of resolutions? So, in addition to the usual slew of good intentions (lose weight, get in shape, eat healthy and drink more water, stay in touch with old friends, attend cultural events, clean the house, etc...) quickly discarded without a plan by the end of January, here's our environmental and personal goals for 2026...

Labor Day marks the (un)official end of the Summer season. The college students have left their summer jobs and are back to classes. K - 12 students are enjoying school and fall sports. The school buses are rolling and so are the tour buses! The sun is rising later and setting earlier, the days are getting shorter, and Cape Cod air turns cooler and drier - No more unbearable humidity! The traffic has eased up on the major roads, and most of the out of state plates are gone. Don't close up the summer cottage or hunker down inside just yet...

Put away those credit cards, stay away from the malls and shopping plazas! Take a break from all the commercialism (shopping!) of the Holiday season and enjoy some old-fashioned Holiday magic in the spirit of family, friends and community.

For most Cape Cod schools, traditionally starting with Presidents day, February 20^th through the 24^th is February School Vacation week! Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket public school students will enjoy winter recess the following week. Cape Cod offers lots to do in the winter, both in and outdoors, for Cape Cod kids, as well as visiting families and grandchildren.

The Coronavirus is present on Cape Cod. It is not summer here. Please think carefully before arriving early to open your summer homes. Our grocery stores are experiencing the same shortages of toilet paper, Clorox wipes, Lysol spray, chicken, produce, etc. Many small businesses have yet to open for the season, some have closed and others may be forced to close. Please Note: Our hospitals are limited in size.

March is Women's History Month

March is Women's History Month! Famous Cape Cod women include Barnstable-born, Mercy Otis Warren, a highly influential writer and Patriot activist for the American Revolution. She is honored with a statue on the lawn of the Barnstable County Superior Courthouse; her portrait is currently on display in the Art of Americas Collection at the MFA.

February is traditionally the month of LOVE; right in the middle falls Valentine's Day. According to one legend, Valentine, a 3rd century Roman priest, performed marriages despite Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage. Claudius believed unmarried men made better soldiers, and martyred Valentine. Valentine's Day was originally celebrated with hand written "valentines" and love letters. Fancy valentines made of fine papers and decorated with satin, ribbon and lace appeared in the 1830's. Now, Valentine's is the 2nd most popular day for sending greeting cards (Christmas is the first.)
