Whining at Engadget

Today I have listened to the 138th episode of the Engadget Podcast. I have been listening to the podcast, and actually enjoying it since I have noticed that I have been spending too much time sifting through various RSS feeds a few months ago. I have deleted much of my RSS feeds, and switched to the podcasts so that I could listen to them while driving.

This last episode, however, was a complete symphony of whining. They did not stop for almost an hour and talked about how Dell Adamo was meaningless, and how iPhone OS 3.0 was mostly catch-up with the other contenders in the smartphone arena.

Well, unfortunately guys, this is how Apple operates. They do stuff, and they do it very differently from the other people. They are for people who think different literally. Besides the good looks, shiny finish and elegance their stuff is really cool technically. And you know that.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t want an Apple fanboy podcast from the Engadget and I am sure you won’t be that way even I tried hard for the last 5 centuries or so. Also, I am not an Apple fan myself. But the recent trend in Apple anti-fanboyism is just bad as the other.

Yes, even the MacBook Pro has its own set of problems wrt the OS, like lacking a real Office suite (that is one of the thing MS has been doing the best). So it is quite obvious and expected that the two year old iPhone platform has its own set of problems. But that is not copy-paste, not MMS. And with the new push-notifications, peer-to-peer connection and custom interfaces over bluetooth and the data connector things are just looking better and better.

PS: I have rumors on a qwerty keyboard for the new generation iPhone. I am not sure they will add even one button, let alone one for each letter in the alphabet and everything that comes with it…

The iphone os 3.0

The talk of the day is the preview of the new version of iphone os. Apple will have an event in 24 hours.
What is the big deal? A new os for a gadgey? Copy and paste? Well it is bigger than that. We are expecting apple’s take on the netbook boom lately and we believe apple will show us the details of the os that will power the device bridging the gap between the iphone and macbook.
An apple tablet similar to nokia’s seems very likely with advanced power management (up to a day of battery power), multitouch and 3g connectivity.
So i am eager to see the os that will power it and enhance my dear iphone.

My new, shiny, social-web silence inducing toy

So… The dust have settled and i am back. As you may or may not have noticed, i have bought a new iphone 3g. This is the reason I have not been able to blog or tweet for the last 2 weeks.
I have been busy admiring, jumping from app to app to app store and definitely charging this little monster.
What i will do from now on is to try something different. I will try to run my blog mostly through the iphone.
I know it is harder to write on this screen, but it is always with me. This has been my biggest gripe lately. I had some things to say which went away until i found some comfortable place i found. Also i don’t write 500 word editorials. So i will go ahead and try this.
I am planning to write about the phone itself then advance into some posts about the apps etc.
All for today…

Google is on a roll

Google has gathered steam and has been releasing and updating products. I have greeted these latest products (Offline Gmail, most probably offline Calendar, Google Sync etc.) with a sense of satisfaction, joy and an occasional tear in my eyes.
Fortunately I am not those guys who believe that the billion-dollar giant corporation is after a few personal bit of data from a mere nerd who blogs and twits bullshit on the web. On the contrary I embrace the things has given me for free and try to enjoy every minute of using it.
These series of releases made Gmail the ultimate e-mail experience, online and offline, with the ability to manage several e-mail accounts over POP. I have ditched Apple's mail for my personal use and increasingly use Gmail for my business use. I can access Gmail from my WinMo phone both online and offline. With the current release of Google Sync I can change whatever I like on Google's server and get moving with my phone in my hand.
I am not sure what have triggered Google's recent releases but I gladly appreciate it. They seem to follow Apple's philosophy here. Simple design with core functionality in a product that works. Kudos and thanks to Google.
