Once SharePoint 2010 Public Beta is released, you would want to start playing with it!

This post will detail steps on installing Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS4) on a Windows 7 RTM.

Ideally this would be on laptop and the recommended hardware would be

• x64 capable CPU
• 2 Gb of RAM minimum (4Gb recommended)
• Download the SharePoint.exe file for Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4)
• Extract the files from SharePoint.exe with this command line. SharePoint.exe /extract:c:\SharePointFiles  This extracts all of the installation files to your hard drive at C:\SharePointFiles
• Edit the Configuration to Allow Windows Client. You will need to edit one of the installation files to permit the install on Windows 7. Edit C:\SharePointFiles\Files\Setup\config.xml and add this line to the end. Because this is an XML file you must get capitalization correct. <Setting Id="AllowWindowsClientInstall" Value="True"/> The complete file will now look like this:

</Configuration>

Before you install and configure Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4) on Windows7 RTM, you will need to configure Windows7 features and install the pre-requisite software, since SharePoint 2010 does not run the pre-requisite installer on Windows7 RTM.

I have written a separate post on how to prepare for Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4) installation on Wiindows7 RTM.

Once you have installed the pre-requisite software, you are ready to install and configure Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4)

• Run C:\SharePointFiles\Setup.exe.
• Choose “Install Windows SharePoint Services”. Do not install the software prerequisites.
• Accept the warning about installing on Windows 7.
• Choose the Basic install type.
• On Windows 7 only during the install you will be prompted for a known compatibility issue with SQL Server 2008. Ignore for now.
• Choose Run Program during install.
• After installation and configuration of WSS4.0 is completed, you will need to install the SQL Server 2008 SP1.
• On installation, start the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard. Run the Wizard.
• Once the configuration is successful  install SQL Server 2008 SP1. Download Link:  sql8sp1
• Create a new SharePoint site using the SharePoint 4.0 Central Administration under Administrative Tools.

SharePoint 2010 will come with pre-requisite installer and basically you just run the Prerequisite.exe before installing SharePoint 2010. This application takes care of the pre-requisite software including IIS installation. It does not install and configure SQL Server Of course, this may not be applicable for Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4), since it installs and configures SQL Express 2008 for you.

However, to install Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4) on Windows7 you will need to install pre-requisite software, since the SharePoint 2010 Prerequisite installer does not run on Windows 7.

Follow these steps to get ready for installing Microsoft SharePoint Foundation (WSS 4) on Windows7

• IIS (Windows Feature) installation and configuration (Refer to this post for a scripted setup of IIS)
• Reboot
• Install FilterPack by running c:\SharePointFiles\PrerequisiteInstallerFiles\FilterPack\FilterPack.msi
• Install Sync framework by running  c:\SharePointFiles\PrerequisiteInstallerFiles\sync\Synchronization.msi
• Download the Geneva framework Beta 1 runtime x64. Download Link: 2k
• Install Geneva framework.

This how to is enable IIS in Windows7, either using GUI or CLI. This is one of the pre-requisites for installing SharePoint 2010 on Windows7 for development purposes.

1. Click [Start] button.

2. In the [Search Box] box, type [windows features].

3. Click [###].

4. Double-click [Internet Information Services] check box.

5. Double-click [Web Management Tools] check box.

6. Double-click [World Wide Web Services] check box.

7. Double-click [IIS 6 Management Compatibility] check box.

8. Double-click [Application Development Features] check box.

9. Double-click [Common HTTP Features] check box.

10. Drag from [Position] indicator to [Tablet PC Components] check box.

11. Double-click [Health and Diagnostics] check box.

12. Double-click [Performance Features] check box.

13. Double-click [Security] check box.

Alternatively you can use these command line to do the same thing:

Start a Command Prompt and paste in this command.

Now that the veil has been lifted on the next version of SharePoint aka SharePoint 2010 at the SharePoint Conference 2009 in Las Vegas, NDA is not applicable and we can start sharing our discoveries of what you all have come to know as SharePoint 2010.

I have been privy to the Beta1 bits of SharePoint 2010 under NDA till date. I can only say one thing at this stage – AWESOME!

SharePoint 2010 Beta1 bits have blown me away. You will be too! If you have seen the sneak peak videos, you know what to expect.

Sneak peak videos were just that, introducing you to the new and fresh look, throwing some new terms and quite teasing!

Have a new installation of MOSS (SP2) and when we create an RSS feed from a SharePoint site (blog) the RSS feed comes up and does create a feed in Internet Explorer but does not create a feed into Outlook 2007.

Solution:

1.  

Synchronize my Outlook RSS Feed subscriptions with the Common Feeds List

2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. On the Other tab, under General, click Advanced Options.
4. Under General settings, select the Sync RSS Feeds to the Common Feed List check box.

Scenario

Data Type for Field is Whole Number (integer)

Problem

Client enters number starting with zero. On moving to next field, zero is removed from the number!

Resolution

Open the text box properties in the design view of the form.

Select Format, next to the Data Type (which should be Whole Number (integer))

Change the Format from Number to None (display XML value)

Click OK

Click Apply

Click OK

Test

Now enter a number staring with Zero and you will notice that when moving to the next field, zero is not removed from the number.
