Merry Christmas 2010 – We Are Moving

There isn’t much time for christmas feelings this year, because we are busy with packing for our moving to Leuven in January 2011.

While Tom and I are spending the holidays in Hamburg, our christmas tree preferred staying in Leuven. As if that weren’t bad enough, Sinterklaas was deterred by the thirty packing cases, which are blocking all entrances to our apartment.

So let’s just enjoy the days off and hope our presents were delivered directly to Leuven.

Coalition of the Willing

Coalition of the Willing is a collaborative animated film and web-based event about an online war against global warming in a ‘post Copenhagen’ world.

The film offers a response to the major problem of our time: how to galvanize and enlist the global publics in the fight against global warming. This optimistic and principled film explores how we could use new Internet technologies to leverage the powers of activists, experts, and ordinary citizens in collaborative ventures to combat climate change. Through analyses of swarm activity and social revolution, ‘Coalition of the Willing’ makes a compelling case for the new online activism and explains how to hand the fight against global warming to the people.

Coalition of the Willing has been directed and produced by Knife Party, written by Tim Rayner and crafted by a network of 24 artists from around the world using varied and eclectic film making techniques. Collaborators include some of the world’s top moving image talent, such as Decoy, World Leaders and Parasol Island.

It’s time for some jazz! Here’s me playing “Laura” (composed by David Raksin) on my Casio Privia PX-830 digital piano. It was adapted from the theme of the 1944 film “Laura” directed by Otto Preminger. Lyrics were written by Johnny Mercer. It has become a jazz standard with over four hundred known recordings. The best known versions are by Frank Sinatra, Woody Herman, Dick Haymes, Charlie Parker, J.J. Johnson and Julie London. I hope you like it!

Technical details: the video was recorded using a Kodak Zi8 pocket camcorder (at 720p), cut and H.264 reencoded at 4000 Kbps using MediaCoder. The audio was recorded (at 48 kHz / 24-bit) using Ableton Live Lite 7 while running the Casio PX-830s L/Mono Line Out to a Line 6 POD Studio GX and got FLAC encoded using MediaCoder. Video and audio were combined using MKV Toolnix.

Here’s me playing “Walking in the Air” (composed by Howard Blake) on my Casio Privia PX-830 digital piano. This one is dedicated to Doro. The song was composed for the 1982 animated film of Raymond Briggs‘ 1978 children’s book The Snowman. I hope you like it!

Levitron Omega

This is our Levitron Omega (by Fascinations) demonstrating spin stabilized magnetic levitation. The magnetic top levitates via magnetic repulsion above a magnetic base plate, stabilized by gyroscopic effect due to its spin.

The song is called “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad” by the Bourbon Street Stompers.
