It’s storm season in our part of the country, with tornadoes, rain and hail showing up in weather forecasts on a regular basis.

For facilities with rooftop units, it’s imperative to have those units checked out once a major storm passes.

Did you know that hail guards, which can be attached during installation or at any time in the units’ life, can provide extra protection from hail damage and prolong the life of the equipment? Ask your Alpha Mechanical salesperson about the availability and cost of hail guards.

The aluminum fins on your HVAC’s condenser coils can be bent by hail. Damaged or bent coil fins will prevent your HVAC system from operating properly.  If left unaddressed, bent fins from hail damage can destroy your HVAC unit entirely. The unit can lose efficiency as a result of damaged fins.

According to the announcement, CafePress will move its headquarters from San Mateo, Calif. and expand its operations in Riverport. It was announced April 30 by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer, Congressman John Yarmuth, Eileen Pickett, Executive Vice President Greater Louisville, Inc., and CafePress CEO Bob Marino.

From the release:

“This agreement represents a commitment for $16.5 million in investment by CafePress to expand the existing 140,000 square foot production facility by an additional 185,000 square feet, and a plan to create 592 new full-time jobs in Kentucky over the next 10 years. This agreement will also bring the company’s global headquarters to Louisville and cement an ongoing positive relationship between the company and the great state of Kentucky.”

CafePress opened a warehouse in Riverport in 2005. The company went public this year, and Marino said, at the news conference — “Today marks a continued commitment to our relationship with the great state of Kentucky as we bring our global headquarters to Louisville and cement the path to new jobs. And this move makes CafePress the first publicly traded e-commerce company to be headquartered in the commonwealth.”

At the expanding Riverport warehouse, workers customize dozens of items such as T-shirts, buttons and coffee mugs and ship them all over the world within 24 hours. CafePress already employs about 300 in Louisville.

Given that the location was in a high-traffic area in the middle of the city’s medical complex, the work was scheduled on a Saturday. The units were atop an 11-story building, requiring a crane and precision engineering to replace the units. Eight Alpha technicians were on the site.

The Alpha crew arrived before 7:30 a.m., and the job was complete by 5:00, with the units were up and running as scheduled. The work was part of an ongoing replacement schedule of units for Faulkner.

Alpha Mechanical had exhibited at the organization’s mid-year event in Nashville last year. At that event, business was so good that the company stepped up to the national stage, exhibiting as the largest self-performing mechanical services provider in our region. Alpha covers Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Tennessee.

“After two events, I can’t say enough about the quality of the retailers who attend PRSM events,” said Gerry Lewis, Director of Sales for Alpha Mechanical. “We met so many people who can, and will, impact our business as new customers.”

PRSM reported a record number of attendees in Anaheim, including nearly 400 retailers. Most of those were individuals responsible for facilities management, many for national chains. Included were restaurants, office supply stores and big box retailers.

The show also featured a few outstanding speakers. The first was Jeremy Gutsche, who calls himself the chief trend hunter at his web site. Gutsche’s talk focused on how smart companies innovate by recognizing trends and capitalizing on them. And when he gave away one of his books, he searched the crowd and walked directly toward our own Gerry Lewis to give him the award.

Everyone at the Friday breakfast came away inspired by the message from Navy Blue Angel pilot John Foley, whose talk was accompanied by dramatic video of Blue Angel performances. He discussed tactics that work in business and ways to assure high performance. Check him out here.

The show (Professional Retail Store Maintenance Association) is THE show for retail facilities professionals, and more than 1,600 are expected to spend a few days at the Anaheim Convention Center learning about their craft. There are education sessions on everything from HVAC management to the latest in green energy practices and new technology.
