Hello Fellow Kappans!

I just wanted to take some time to post about our first Phi Theta Kappa sponsored social here at Wor-Wic. We set up a nice night of games and food in the student lounge. Thank you for all who attended and brought games or snacks! I really appreciate the extra effort.

For future socials we might look into better advertisement of the event such as flyers on campus or Facebook postings. I would also encourage us not to advertise it as a "Phi Theta Kappa social" but what it is, ex: Game Night, and then "Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa". This will encourage those who aren't members to join in on the fun.

To those who had to miss this event, stay tuned for a Halloween themed social for the month of October! I'll try to keep everyone updated as plans are made. Also, I hope those who did attend enjoyed themselves or made some new friends because I did!

Nominee and Returning Member Mailings

Hello to all my fellow Kappans and Fall 2010 Nominees,

A Membership Mailing will be going out to the addresses on file of returning members as well as all of our new nominees for this fall. Within the mailing will be a lot of pertinent information about our General Meetings, Officer Nominations & Elections, and our Socials and Scrabble Tournaments. So please be on the look out for it this week to show up in your mailbox.

Better World Books

Hey Gang,

Today we were able to send 16 boxes of books off to Better World Books! I just want to take a minute to thank the faculty, staff, students, and individuals that donated books as well as those that helped throughout this process.

In total, we received 589 books. We received a very broad range of textbooks and academic literature. The majority of the books received were textbooks for World and U.S. History, thou many were also for Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Nursing, and Anatomy & Physiology. Although there were some Student Study Guides and Prep books for the SAT/ACT’s as well as the NCLEX-RN exams. We also received many compilations of various literary works such as poetry and short stories, as well as quick reference guidebooks for numerous subjects.

After the pre-screening process was complete, we were able to send Better World Books a total of 352 books that meet their requirements. Ten books were held aside that did qualify in order to implement our internal “Living Along the Poverty Line” scholarship. Of the remaining books that did not meet the criteria for Better World Books, we have already sold quite a few of them for fundraising. The decent majority of the books that remain are either for U.S. History or Literary compilations. There are quite a number of books geared towards excellence in college writing skills as well, that we possibly may be able to utilize in helping our fellow students achieve success. We are currently looking to find homes for the remaining books gearing towards sending them to shelters, state run facilities for rehabilitation, and medical care or assistance facilities.

If any Kappans are interested in the books we have remaining, please contact me so we can schedule a time for you to look through them, just remember they are $1 per book. Although we are hoping to have either sold or donated them by the beginning of the semester. Also, if any of you have any ideas or suggestions as to who may need some books donated to them please don’t hesitate to contact me at agenter0001@live.worwic.edu, as we have textbooks, academic literature, as well as leisure reading books from project graduation.

A Brief Reminder

Hello Everyone,

I'm so happy to see blogging! Since this is a collaborative journaling effort intended in part to make Hallmark writing easier in December, I would like to remind you of the labels that can be added to your messages. You can use the labels to search for all posts on a given topic. Great labels to use include: goals, Project Graduation, Book Club, etc. You can include multiple labels if a post hits a number of topics. Just remember that 10 seconds now could help avoid many minutes of searching in December.

Finally, congratulations to last night's graduates. For those moving on, we will miss you but encourage you to keep in touch and thank you for the time given to the chapter. For those of you moving into the chapter leadership, you're doing a great job so far and I can't wait to see what you accomplish.

Alpha Nu Omicron Book Club

Greetings!

The 2010-2011 Officer team met Thursday May 6th, 2010 to discuss the work we plan on accomlishing this summer to allow for a great school year. We made a great deal of progress and please watch for new blogs as activities come up that everyone can participate in!

Our largest order of business is the establishment of a book club on the Wor-Wic campus. This will tie into our project that is in the works including author Wes Moore speaking on our campus. We are now conducting research on the status of reading as an extracurricular activity. We will be conducting surveys over the summer and also hope to find a way to incorporate the literacy idea into the primary education schools. Wes Moore Interviews coming up

I thought you might like to know that Wes Moore is scheduled to appear on two good interview shows on PBS: Charlie Rose on Friday May 21 and Tavis Smiley on Wednesday May 26. Check your PBS TV schedule for air times; sometimes the show will replay on at a different time on a later date as well. Let's hope we get to hear him in person at WWCC in the future.

I wanted to keep everyone apprised of the things that Alpha Nu Omicron is working on for the upcoming year! Officers have been elected and are as follows

This is an extremely diverse and talented group and I am confident that we will work hard together to keep this chapter an important organization on our campus, in our community and world. We are off and running and would love any input the members have to give, so please share what you would like to see us doing!

We have taken on a sister chapter--Alpha Zeta Kappa--from Deltech Wilmington campus. On Thursday, April 29th, 2010, five members of Alpha Nu Omicron (Michelle Malinger, Cody Dennis, Jimmy Staley, Matt Lawson and myself) took a fun road trip to their campus to show support for their induction ceremony. Co-Presidents Lauren Green and Heather Boyce led the ceremony and they have a small but interested set of new inductees. Ms. Patti Van Atter was the guest speaker and as always she charmed the crowd. We will continue to help them grow in every way we can and consider this a huge part of what we want to do this coming semester.

We are currently comprising the set of individuals we will send to the Middle States Regional Officers Academy/Honors Institute (OA/HI). Our hope is to send new officers and members to allow them to grow in this organization through education and fellowship. Attending any Regional or International event is a beautiful experience that cannot be recreated with words, pictures or videography.

I, as President, will make contributions to this blog at least once a week at the start of the semester, to assure you all know exactly what we are doing. Please feel free to follow, comment and contribute as often as possible. I am confident that this chapter will continue to grow on our campus. We have an amazing set of advisors, officers and general membership and we can do anything we put our minds too! For now, lets try to enjoy this beautiful Spring weather and keep our minds buzzing with ideas!

I’ve just been informed by Mrs. Derickson that we have until Thursday to recruit 45!! doners for the blood drive to be held. Please talk up this event in your classes, at the café, outside lounging, etc. Send students to see Karen Lewis Dryden or Mrs. Derickson, both in the nursing department to sign up. I know the timing is somewhat inconvenient due to International, but please do the best you can and those of you who will be staying, please chat this up both days. If you were personally planning to sign up, please also take the time to make that contact. Also, please feel to pass this message along. I’ve tried to include the new inductees who were at the last meeting, and therefore know what we’re talking about, but I’m not sure I caught everyone.

Honors Seminar

Yes Folks I have finally created a gmail account and I will be contributing to this wonderful blog set up by the lovely, Nicole Bata! (Thanks Nicole for making it so easy)

After attending our rescheduled New Inductee Orientation, I am confident we are on the right track to bringing a strng team of new members to continue to take our growing chapters in the direction we all have such high hopes it will go! I felt that while only a few showed up, at least 50% of those who did, were interested in being active members and 3 or 4 may want to be part of our 2010-2011 officer team! This takes a large weight off my shoulders, as I have been quite worried that Ericka, Nicole, Ashley, Natalie, Alek, Jay and my own work would be in vain if we were unable to find individuals as patient as we, to keeping this organization a STRONG LEADER on our campus and in our community!

We have alot left to accomplish and the Spring Break is fast approaching. I will be sending you each an email so that I can switch this account to only Phi Theta Kappa related stuff. I believe this will better keep orgainzed the information I need to complete my portion of tasks and be available for you all as well! I must admit that I have gotten into an unhealthy habit of not checking my email daily (gasp) because my email is littered with Facebook notifications that won't seem to turn off!

I hope everyone is ready for the Honors Seminar Series this Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 in AAB333! I am still hoping for one more person to help keep the discussion going in a progressive manner! Contact me if you are interested!

Regional Convention

Hi everyone,

Alek, Jeffery and I attended the Middle States Regional Convention this past weekend. We weren't sure we were going to make it because of the weather, but the roads opened up and we headed up to the Jersey shore on Friday.

There are many changes taking place in 2010 and I would like to refer you to www.ptk.org for more information. You'll want to check out the Hallmark Awards as well as Five Star Competitive Edge, both located in the Quick Links dropdown menu. We were also introduced to the new Honors Study Topic: The Democratization of Information: Power, Peril and Promise. Finally, Alek and Jeffery attended sessions on journaling and the transfer process that they hope to share with everyone at future meetings.

The final event of the convention was also a very emotional time for us. Alpha Nu Omicron was recognized for becoming a Five Star Chapter, reaching Pinnacle (for a 20% increase in membership from 2008), and earning the Northern Star Award. During the evening Matt said his goodbyes as DE/MD State President and welcomed his successor, John Parsons, II, to the position.

All in all, a great weekend with wonderful speakers, amazing new friends, and a wealth of information to share.

Scrabble

Hello all!
The January Scrabble tournament was a success, even with the lack of publicity! By turning in all our dates for the rest of the spring we will be able to get more ads and therefore more players! Exciting, I know!

For those out of the know, here is how we ran the event...
Doors Opened at 6pm, Games start at 6:30
$10 for Wor-Wic peeps, $15 for others
3- 45 minute one on one games with 15 min intermissions between allowing for concession purchases
Scores were tabulated and ranked so players played 2nd and 3rd games against people of the same ranking
The top 4 scorers received prizes ranging from free ticket to the next tournament, Dunkin Donuts gift card ($15 purchased by PTK), a basket of Chocolate (from my momma), and a cheesecake donated by Ashley's friend.
The event included free pretzels on the tables with sodas, nachos, and hot dogs on sale for $1... and some amazing cookies Ericka made 2 for $1!

Events will be held Feb 26th, March 26th, and April 16th..... see ya there!
