That said, there are occasional flashes of the future, such as this order tablet often seen in bars and karaoke establishments. Just touch the icons on the screen for what you want, and within minutes the waitress will be at your table with your order.

A construction site on the way from the dojo to the motorbike parking lot has helpfully posted this eye chart. You are meant to stand 6 meters back from it and see which line you can read. What this picture can’t show is that standing 6 meters back from this sign involves standing smack in the middle of a very busy street.

This mirror-image chocolate is part of some manufacturer’s “gyaku-choco” (reverse chocolate) campaign. The point is that Valentine’s Day here traditionally sees women giving men chocolate, and the confectionery companies would like to see it working both ways. The ad campaign makes no mention of the already-existing and well-established holiday a month later devoted to exactly that — men buying chocolate and other gifts for women they especially like.
