Tell us about your family.

The Patriarch of the family, Joe, has three children. At some point they have all had a part in the business. Joe is expected to be a Great Grandfather this November.

What inspired you to start your business?

The previous owner was someone we knew, and he could not run it any longer.

What is one of the most difficult things you have encountered while running your business?

Working while ill due to not having anyone else to work.

How do you define success in your business?

Positive feedback from customers.

How is your business now vs. when you first started?

Alpine has tamed a lot over the past 3 decades. A lot more families have made Alpine their home. I miss the old days when you would see horses on the boulevard.

How would you describe your companies’ culture?

Easy going and friendly.

What do you look for when hiring employees?

Someone who is reliable and trustworthy.

This year’s recipients are:

Brooke LaFalce. Brooke is a graduate of Granite Hills High School and demonstrated academic excellence, a strong work ethic both in school and with her extracurricular activities as well as her work experience. She plans to attend community college to get her Associate of Arts (AA) degree and then transfer to San Diego State University to complete her degree with the ultimate goal of becoming a teacher.

Rylan Larsen. Rylan is a graduate of Grossmont High School and simultaneously completed her AA degree while still attending high school. Rylan showed great commitment to her academic studies and was a student athlete as well as participating in club sports. Rylan’s goal is to double major in literature and communication at UCLA.

Camden Sos. Camden is a student athlete and graduated from Granite Hills High School. He believes adversity builds character and after a sports set-back, he was able to build skills to become a better student and athlete. He would like to become a professional baseball player and plans to pursue a degree in engineering at Texas Christian University.

Elise Yankopolous. Elise is a graduate of River Valley Charter School. She is an excellent student, is bilingual in Spanish and plays with the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra. She has an interest in mental health issues and has partnered with City of Hope (a local crisis response organization) as a student team member. She plans on attending University of California, Davis campus majoring in neurobiology with the final goal of going to medical school to become a doctor.

Each year the AWC-SPEF committee is honored to read the essays, review the applicants academic transcripts and letters of recommendation submitted by the graduating seniors. The number of applicants varies from year-to-year.

The requirements and forms to apply for the scholarship are available on the Alpine Woman’s Club website: alpinewomansclub.org. These requirements include being a resident of Alpine, demonstrating a well-developed sense of community participation and/or work experience, scholastic achievement and an autobiographical essay including higher educational goals. Applicants must also provide two letters of recommendation and their high school transcripts.

In order to be considered for the scholarship, all criterion must be met no later than May, 31, 2024. The scholarship recipients and their families are invited to the June Woman’s Club Luncheon where they are honored and presented with their scholarship money.

It is a privilege and honor for the Alpine Woman’s Club to support Alpine students as they pursue their future goals. Alpine Woman’s Club is appreciative, as well, of the community support during our fund raisers throughout the year which allows them to do this highly rewarding work.

How long have you been a resident of Alpine? I was born and raised in Alpine. I have lived here for 36 years.

Tell us about your family. My husband’s name is Mike. We have been married for almost 12 years. We have 3 kids Cannon 10, Copper 9, and Charlee 4.

What made you choose to make Alpine your home? My parents moved here in the 80s, and I don’t know any different. I love that small town feel. I love walking into Albertsons and knowing 5 different people. I love the tight knit community that Alpine is. In this crazy world we live in, I feel like Alpine is protected in this little bubble, and it’s a special place to me.

What inspired you to start your business? I was working for my dad’s business doing accounting in 2008 when the economy was headed downhill, it was stressful and not what I had envisioned doing when I was 21. I wanted a fun job, and something that was more me. So, I came up with Bella’s Closet. For a few years I worked both jobs, so I could at least have a steady income, until I built Bella’s strong enough to support myself.

What is one of the most difficult things you have encountered while running your business? Well that is tough. In 2012 Alpine had the Sunrise Powerlink project that went straight through the center of town, which made traffic awful on the Blvd. most residents would avoid it at all costs. Many days I was never able to access my driveway to even open, so I would drive to work and not even be able to pull in my driveway. And then of course 2020, which was really scary in business for me. As I’ve grown Bella’s Closet over the years, so have my expenses. I wasn’t sure how I was going to be able to pay my overhead, but by the grace of God we pivoted our way through it. We came up with some unique ideas, like curbside pick up, and even delivery. Alpine really knows how to pull together and support small businesses in trying times, and I was more thankful than ever to have my business in Alpine during that time.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start a business? Don’t ever give up. Just like life owning a business comes with so many ups and downs, you just have to stay strong and stick with the hard times and you’ll make your way through it. Stay consistent, and always work hard, In the end hard work always pays off.

How do you define success in your business? Success to me is still having the same people walk through my doors, 15 years later. I have built so many important relationships and friendships with my customers, and the fact they are still shopping with me 15 years later makes me feel like I am doing something right. We pride Bella’s Closet with great customer service which so many businesses don’t have these days, but it’s so important in a small town to keep these people coming back.

How is your business now vs. when you first started? When I opened in 2008 things were much simpler. I didn’t realize I would still be here 15 years later. (Time flies) We have expanded in many ways over the years, bigger store front, we are open 7 days a week, and a website. With the over saturated market online, and big box competition we are always working on ways to stay unique, but still true to ourselves. I truly think that’s why it’s so important to have a brick and mortar location so people actually have somewhere to shop.

How would you describe your companies’ culture? At Bella’s Closet we believe that your clothing is an expression of yourself. We have established a culture that is creative, passionate and friendly in order to inspire each person to embrace their unique style.

What do you look for when hiring employees? With having a brick and mortar location, it’s so important to have someone friendly and outgoing. Someone who isn’t shy about talking to customers, and can help with styling and outfit. Another important qualification is having someone reliable, someone who shows up on time, and is ready to work when they are here.

How have you personally grown since becoming a business owner? I have grown so much over the years. When I was younger I was intimidated by customers because I was so young. After many years in business I have grown so confident with how I run things. I know that it’s impossible to make everyone happy, but all we can do is try our very best everyday.

Do you have anything else you’d like to add…I’d like to thank Alpine for supporting Bella’s Closet these past 15 years. I still can’t believe we’ve been in business that long. It warms my heart being a part of such a special community that loves to support small businesses.

These closures, while inconvenient, are necessary to expedite the eastbound I-8 Pine Valley Pavement Project, which covers 10 miles from Viejas Creek Road to just west of Pine Valley Creek Bridge. The ongoing closures over the next three months are intended to avoid a longer construction time. In fact, our crews are working double shifts to ensure the project keeps moving on schedule. If you don’t see crews, it is most likely a shift change or a meal break.

The work being conducted should mean a lifespan of 70 years on the new pavement. We understand the inconvenience and frustration.

Caltrans’ mission is to provide a safe and reliable transportation network that serves all people. That includes maintaining the roadways and highways throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Nighttime lane closures on eastbound I-8 main lanes continue the week of August 29. Eastbound  I-8 will be reduced to one lane in the work areas as follows:

·       Tuesday, Aug. 30, 9 a.m. to 12:01 a.m.:

o   From West Willows Road to Viejas Creek Bridge

o   From Vista Point to SR-79/Japatul Valley Road

·       Wednesday, Aug. 31, 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m.: From Horsethief Creek Bridge Undercrossing to Pine Valley Road Undercrossing

CREWS WILL NOT BE WORKING ON THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY

The Vsta Point located on eastbound I-8 east of East Willows Road near Alpine is serving as a construction staging area and will remain closed for the duration of the project.

The eastbound I-8 bicycle lane will also be closed during the project for the safety of bicyclists, drivers, and highway workers. Shuttle transportation will be provided for bicyclists from East Willows Road to the State Route 79 (SR-79)/Japatul Valley Road Park and Ride.

The construction schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, traffic incidents or other construction related reasons. Motorists are reminded to Be Work Zone Alert and watch for highway workers and moving equipment.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Eastbound I-8 Pine Valley Pavement Project spans a 10-mile section of eastbound I-8 from Viejas Creek to just west of Pine Valley Creek Bridge. The project will replace the right lane and outside shoulder with Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), the left shoulder with hot mixed Asphalt, and install drainage improvements.

 CRCP is a process of placing steel reinforcing bars within the concrete along the entire length of the lanes. CRCP naturally forms tight transverse cracks to evenly transfer loads. The result is a continual, smooth-riding surface capable of withstanding the heaviest loads and the most adverse environmental conditions. The life span of CRCP pavement may be up to 70 years, far exceeding current road surfaces. This means a better driver experience with less cost and maintenance time for highway workers exposed to live traffic.

The portion of the project from SR-79 to just west of Pine Valley Creek Bridge will replace the right two lanes and right shoulder with CRCP. The work includes replacing/upgrading guard rails and repairing bridge rails on five bridges. The estimated total project cost is $46.8 million funded by state and federal sources.
