Alpine Meadows woke up to several inches of light and fluffy this morning! It was a pleasant surprise when the weather forecast seemed to change. There is nothing better than waking up to a newly transformed valley. A certain electricity seems to be given off each time it snows. Dogs are more playful, people on the streets are happy, and excitement for the day we get to strap on the skis or board. Keep doing your dance and next time, we are sure to get a three foot storm.

My cousin and I have been skiing alpine since we could walk. Back when weasel was operating, there was a mid mountain loading station that was adjacent to the Chalet. Every ski day at 10am our extended family meets for hot chocolate and revitalizing warmth, a long standing tradition of ours. During a white out storm we were getting onto weasel chair, which was an unforgiving chair as a youngster, and my cousins ski hit the platform and it drug him out of his seat. As he fell he grabbed onto my skis and I was pulled off the chair but managed to get my arm around the side bar. Luckily two feet had fallen that day because after holding on long enough to allow our chair to gain significant height from the ground, my cousin couldn’t hold on anymore and fell tearing off my skiis in the process. I was left dangling from the chair, ever so slowly moving up to the top of the lift. Due to the white out the lift operators couldn’t see that I had stayed on the chair and ran down to help my cousin. This left me on my own. I managed, at the tender age of 10 or so, to pull myself back up onto the chair but was missing both skis.

As I got to the top I frantically waved my arms to the lift operator who couldn’t see me, again due to the white out. Once he saw me he began waving back, but didn’t realize that my something was wrong until it was too late. Needless to say the exodus from the chair was not very graceful. Both of us escaped without a scratch, and the best part was 4 hours later in the main lodge we overheard two lift operators talking about these two crazy kids that had fallen off weasel.

Alpine is more than a resort, its basically family. To great seasons past, and to this year being a fruitful snowfall.

Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, Snowboarding was the answer to everything. Starting young and stickin’ too, made me grow into a formidable adversary to all the skiers out there. I will admit that there was a time in my life that I viewed skiing as a wave of the past, and truly believed that snowboarding would prevail as the future of winter sporting. I am now happy to admit that I was WAY OFF! Spending most of my winters in Mammoth, I had plenty of easy access to great terrain via chair lift, so I was unfortunately not much of the backcountry hiker in search of pow. I had been missing out on some of the greatest adventures of my life. The most amazing feeling of hiking in to my destination only to find lines that would prove to be better than any I had ridden in the south sierras.

Anyhow about two years ago I started riding Alpine Meadows, and made some friends who are amazing telemark skiers. One day in the ‘07/’08 season, one of these friends offered to let me use their tele gear, and go out on a hike with the others. This day changed my life… Although at that time I was not all that comfortable on tele bindings, (I had skied a number of times before with alpine bindings on Mammoth) I was able to have an experience that would blossom into a transformation of snowboarder into skier.

I have since become an avid tele skier at Alpine Meadows, and sticking with the mountain that has the best hiking terrain, so good in fact, that I very rarely have even stepped into a snowboard, in fear that I will miss a day of great lines hiking Alpine Meadows.

Thank you Alpine, for showing me the light.

I drove up to your resort 3 years ago when it was a low snow year all the way from wyoming. We were lucky and caught the only big storm of the season. a whopping 40 inch storm. are you kidding me? we barely made it across I-80 before they closed that monster of a road. We got to the resort and skiied each chair as they opened it. waiting in a lively line at each chair made for some interesting talk and let’s say smells for us wyoming boys. the turns were ridiculous, free refills, almost too much fun! Still one of the top days of my life and I am a ski bum that has a few good days from time to time. thanks for the turns and the memories, you guys rock!
