Constant Comment : As the world has come to know, the name "Luther" derives from the German liut, "people," and hari, "army," meaning something like, "the leader of an army of people." Martin Luther King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

The Unforgettables Foundation is a 501c (3) non profit organization founded by Timothy Evans in 1999. During a decade of clinical ministry to children and their families, Evans assisted families with the many crises surrounding the death of a child-not the least of which are the crushing financial burdens experienced by families with limited resources.

Assisted by Inland Empire educators, medical professionals, social workers, and morticians, Evans created The Unforgettables Foundation. Paramount among aspects of the Foundation's mission is to assist low-income families provide a dignified, appropriate burial for their children who have died. The Unforgettables Foundation is operated almost entirely by volunteers.

Cal Poly Pomona announced Monday that it has been awarded a $42-million cash gift -- the largest such donation in the history of California State University -- by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, whose cereal magnate founder established an Arabian horse ranch in the hills that now make up the northern edge of the campus.

The grant will be given over five years, including an initial $10 million in August, followed by yearly awards of $8 million, officials said. The money will be used to increase enrollment of first-generation college students, recently emancipated foster youth, military veterans and other underrepresented populations in Southern California.

In a statement, Kellogg Foundation President and Chief Executive Sterling K. Speirn, said the gift was to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the breakfast cereal pioneer, who was a strong believer in higher education and investing in vulnerable youth.
