Joan and Bernard compete as parents, and professional writers, and their kids take sides -- Owen gravitating toward his mother, a rising star author,while Walt gallantly defends his father, a formerly successful writer who can't get anything published. <br /><br />If nothing seems too remarkeable about this broken home slice of life, well, I wouldn't make any judgements too quick, because The Squid and the Whale is delightfully unpredictable and unexpected, with a really unique sense of humor, about some very biting realities nonetheless.<br /><br />In the end, it's Walt's story -- he struggles to find his own, personal rhythm in life, doing impressions of the father he idolizes, without even realizing it. And Frank acts out in an increasingly odd, though strangely self-assured fashion, taking up a pretty substantial drinking habit and leaving his mark around the school (you'll just have to watch the film to find out what I mean by that last part...). <br /><br />The comedy largely arises from the often, I want to say, nutty, behaviors and conversations of the characters -- a mother who isn't a fan of discretion when telling her sons about her personal life and doesn't seem to have an ounce of interest in their father, the man she married (perhaps too hastily), a father who's as self-absorbed as he is unaware of the fact that he's self-absorbed, and their two confused boys who must cope with living in their two different worlds,<br />The Squid and the Whale is such a wild, novel approach to its sensitive subject matter and the pitch-perfect performances, from each cast member (of special note are the inspired performances by both its youngest stars), make it impossible to not take a long, good look at it and ponder its total originality." We then meet Kenji Sugimoto, professor of mathematics and science at the Kinki University of Osaka. In broken English, he describes what Einstein means to him:<br />"Einstein teaches me about love as well as science. Passion, love and science. I love Albert Einstein."<br />Thus, he embarks on a pilgrimage to Princeton to find the legendary cerebrum. Once there, he learns that the brain has been misplaced, and the film documents his subsequent travels across the United States to recover it. The last person known to handle the item is Thomas Stoltz Harvey, a man it proves difficult to find. One lead sends Sugimoto to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, where a former associate of Harvey's, Dr. Harry Zimmerman, informs the unlikely pilgrim that the man he is seeking in fact is dead.<br />Sugimoto next tracks down Einstein's granddaughter by adoption, Evelyn Einstein. She tells him she has reason to believe she actually is biologically related to Einstein, and has been in dialogue with an institute to compare her DNA to that of the late scientist's brain. I think we were inspired mainly by the aquisition of a LEGO skeleton figure and by the increasing levels of violence and evil in the supposedly war-toy-free LEGO range. So we customised some minifigs, built a rudimentary graveyard from plasticine and card, and using my trusty Super-8 Cine camera and some lovely monochrome stock I had recently purchased, began filming indiscriminitely. We animated heedless of such niceties as continuity, making sense or getting the shots in focus. There was some vague semblance of a plot in which explorers discover an ancient thingy which makes the dead rise from their graves, followed by random violence and intertextual references. It's quite a broad and vague parody encompassing horror genres including silent movies, 60's-70's indie horror, 80's gore, and 90's stupididy.<br /> <br /> We shot various footage intermittently whenever we got round to it, and in August 2000 we finally managed to edit together something loosely resembling a movie. The chapter "The trial of truth" stands out with its focus on the Danish star Ole Ritter, his technical, physical and psychological preparations and his performance in the time trials. Ritter is lauded with words such as "power, cycle and style in the simplest manifestation possible", and aesthetically, too, the section stands out: there is no background music or ordinary real sound. Instead, a sound close up of the chain as it seems to sing emphasises the utter concentration of Ritter's venture. Throughout the film Gunner Møller Pedersen's music supports the dramatic and aesthetic aspects of the race and thus sets the mood. A brief retrospective in black and white sets the historical framework, with shots of Ritter and Eddy Merckx' successful record attempts in 1968 and 1972 respectively, and a few words about former record holders such as Fausto Coppi. From then on the film is in colour and with one minor exception (a training scene from a motor race track) it takes place in the relatively colourless setting of a cycle track. The film follows Ritter's three record attempts chronologically, which, accompanied by a Mexican marching band on the bandstand, all fail. There are several interview situations in hand-held reportage style in which Ritter is surrounded by a group of reporters and gives his account of the attempts, plus other shots from the inner circle of the cycle track. When Ritter is riding he is captured from a motorcycle moving round the track or we follow him (during the record attempts) in long pans all the way round the track. The only notable visual device is the slow motion used to accentuate Ritter's style in a couple of places, accompanied by a piano theme, with Leth's words on the soundtrack: "The functional mastery of power is an aesthetic experience". Loosely based on the 1001 Nights (The Arabian Nights) The Adventures of Prince Achmed deploys elaborate cut-outs, early multiplane camerawork, and experiments with wax and sand to produce an exquisite visual feast. The fantasy world of sorcerers and magic lamps, flying horses and an island lake where a princess and her attendants fly down to bathe using lace like wings comes to life in a breathtaking combination of images, color and special effects that will dazzle and enchant adults and children alike. The film was finished and had its premiere in Berlin in 1926.<br /><br />-<br /><br />Description: In our age of CG and digital enhancements, it's difficult (for some) to remember a time when things were done by hand and hand alone. Thus, is the case of animation. This painstaking art has been replaced with programs that not only speed up the process of single-frame rendering, they can even mimic pen strokes and outlines.<br /><br />So it's a rare treat to come across a unique work that illustrates the artistry of early animation in Film. A shining example is Reinger's "The Adventures of Prince Achmed" . There's really no preparation for this feature, one just needs to succumb to the beautiful imagery that begins to reveal itself, one silhouette at a time. It completely takes us off the conventional track and into the realm best inhabited by forgotten dreams. One forgets that one is watching a series of contours and like the traditional Nang Yai shadow puppet play, the journey has you swept away in a short time!<br /><br />Some may not be as impressed with this `old-fashioned' approach to story telling. It doesn't compare to the spectacles of the `instant classic' available these days. It's a bit `clanky' and possibly too analog for others.
