It originated in the early 1900′s when it became the standard for little girls dresses after being worn as part of a Peter Pan costume on the stage, but it was the grunge scene of the early 1990′s (and possibly as far back as the 80′s) when it hit the alternative clothing scene.

Kinderwhore clothing

The style was known as kinderwhore and was made popular by female rockers like Courtney Love of Hole and Kat Bjelland of Babes in Toyland.

Kinderwhore meant wearing cute child-like babydoll dresses or nighties, often torn or very low cut, with mary jane shoes and lots of make up!

Tips on wearing Peter Pan Collars

A babydoll dress with a peter pan collar is really a statement item so you don’t need to team it up with anything, but if you wanted something over the top in case of chilly weather, a cute knitted cardigan would work or a cropped cardigan. Or if you wanted to mix styles I think even a hoodie could look pretty cool, to hell with convention!

A Peter Pan Collar shirt can be worn with most styles of skirts or trousers and still looks cool, but I would recommend wearing one with some skinny jeans, or a short a-line skirt for the best look.

A lot of mainstream high street stores (like Peacocks, New Look, Primark etc.) have been stocking the odd Peter Pan Collar dress in recent years so it’s worth checking them out and if you’re looking for a bargain don’t forget your local charity shops – it’s a safe bet that there’s Peter Pan Collar dresses in there that someone has gotten rid of after wearing once or twice!

Gothic fashion is dark: a sometimes morbid and eroticized style of dress.

Gothic fashion is inspired by the Victorian era

Modern Gothic styles often borrow from the punk, rock or heavy metal subcultures but authentic gothic fashion is heavily inspired by the fashion of the Victorian era (19th century), before factory made clothing was the norm and when pieces were hand made.

In particular, the ‘mourning clothes’ of this era when mourning customs and etiquette were incredibly rigid and people would wear black clothing for set durations depending on how close their relationship was to the deceased.

Gothic clothing colours & Gothic fabrics

Gothic fashion usually features a lot of black, but often mixes dark reds, purples and other colours. Heavy fabrics are popular such as thick velvet or leather, mixed with lighter fabrics such as lace, silk and taffeta, fishnet etc.

Gothic hairstyles & make-up

Typical Gothic personal styles include black hair (often dyed), black eye make-up, black lipstick and black nail varnish. This goes for both men and women although it isn’t a requirement for anyone (always go with what works for you and develop your own personal style).

Modern day Gothic fashion

The modern day Goth style initially emerged during the 1980s Gothic rock scene. As the rest of the world was loving bright, extravagant colours, Goth fashion went the other way with dark black clothing and hair, and pale white complexions.

She wears a lot of animal prints and bright colours and there’s one particular outfit (shown in the image to the right) worn by Alabama that I’ve always adored and which has been an big inspiration for my own fashion choices.

This outfit brings together punk, retro and casual styles and the colours and patterns seem to compliment each other really well.

As I said earlier, punk tartan trousers tend to look best with a plain top so the tartan can be the main focus of the outfit and you’re not overdoing the patterns.

I suggest wearing your tartan trousers with a plain jumper or t-shirt/vest (plain black is best) for a minimal punk look.

Tartan trousers look cool with heels, boots, converse, creepers – so many different styles of shoes will work with these.
