And why must the brattish Alvin get starrier billing than his comrades, the intelligent Simon and the sensitive Theodore? At least the new film (directed by Betty Thomas) teaches him a lesson — the age-old one about staying true to your friends and not getting too big for your boots. Along the way, the trio’s status as the world’s most famous singing chipmunks is challenged by three young females, but this is much the same as the original.
