Sins of the Father: A Very British Gangster 2 (2011. 1 hr. 17 min 36 sec) is the follow up to Donal MacIntyre’s first documentary about Manchester gangster Dominic Noonan (born 1966). Noonan is infamous for his string of convictions and his families rise to power following the murder of "White Tony" Johnson, the leader of the Cheetham Hill Gang, in 1991.
Released after five years in prison the documentary follows Dominic as he tries to reassert control over his family and rebuild his fortunes, whilst at the same time trying to stop his own son, Bugsy, from following his example and ending up in prison. Although the primary focus is on Dominic, his wider family members are given time to explain their chosen lifestyle.
I had a real problem with this show, not because of its subject matter; it is difficult to sustain sympathy for gangsters, who hurt other people and boast of having no moral qualms about this, the real problem is the way the show has been made.
Most people, I think, will have an expectation that a documentary should be a fly-on-the-wall affair - it’s often the things which people say when they forget the camera is around which gives the most insight to how they truly think. But this is, by far, the most constructed documentary I’ve seen, full of crane and tracking shots, which itself gives the impression that much of what you are watching has been staged.
Things for Dominic and his family are not inevitable, with even some of them taking Dominic’s example as how not to live your life, probably because Dominic has spent two thirds of his adult life in prison. This, though, is not enough to save his son, who seems destined to follow his father into a life of crime, but mostly prison time.
I’m not sure that Sins of the Father tells you very much about either the man or his criminal culture, given that much of it appears staged, allowing Dominic the chance to present his own perspective on his life.
Only a screener was provided, so I cannot discuss any possible extras or what the final product will look like. The picture on the screener was more than passable for a television program.

Fortress 2012

It has been a long while since I have witnessed a decent World War II film. Fortress follows a story based on true events of a squadron of B-17 bombers making strafing runs in Italy from Northern Africa.

Fortress opens with a fantastic air assault including several formations of planes making the bombing run, while axis forces, make machine gun passes across the formation in small planes. The focal plane is called the Lucky Lass and is hit with small arms fire, loses an engine and a couple of guys die inside, but the plane is landed safely.

For a low budget film I thought the aerial combat and filming were fantastic. I liked the sets, and it is obvious that some time was taken on the outfits, and items used during this time period. The attempt at the softer moments seemed a bit forced, but this was about the action. The story development, and humor was a decent try to establish the characters, but leaves one yearning for the flight sequences. The middle of the film drags a bit. There is some tension between the mechanics and airmen which is the highlight of the downtime between flying.

The final 15 minutes is a full on assault on the senses, a tense melodramatic ballet of bullets and bombs in mid-air. The action is tight and tense, and includes spinning and diving action. The inter-splicing of wide shots and close-ups added to the action by placing the viewer into all angles and stages of the combat.

The acting was consistent, no one person stealing the film, but no one detracting from it. Director Mike Phillips and writer Adam Klein obviously took their time to create this and I hope to see more of their work in the near future.

This film works on many levels, and shows how a lower budget production can be as good quality as a big budget theatrically released film. I rate this film a definite rent and a buy if you like war films. Fortress rates a 6.5 out of 10.

The story begins with Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist on the skids after a libel case guts him of his life savings and professional credibility. Like an angel descending from heaven, a lawyer played by Steven Berkoff arrives with an offer Blomkvist can't refuse. The defamed journalist is to play Sherlock Holmes for the lawyer's billionaire client Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer) and get to the bottom of a decades old family murder mystery plaguing Vanger's conscience. Things start to get interesting when Blomkvist requests a research assistant, who arrives in the form of Rooney Mara's brilliant and beautifully-damaged Lisbeth Salander. The titular heroine shows up on her speeding motorcycle with a tractor trailer worth of personal baggage in tow.
At Dragon Tattoo's heart is a whodunnit mystery. The problem here is that screenwriter Steven Zaillian refuses to tell the story that way. The audience is kept at too far a distance from the details of the mystery. Instead, we are forced to be content watching our dual protagonists piece together the case, never fully privy to what the evidence represents. Without the ability to form hypotheses and jump to conclusions, Zaillian has neutered himself of one of his biggest weapons: misdirection. The result is a dull story that leaves the audience struggling to engage.

For an actor who is rarely off our screens and seems to actively seek out daring or even ill advised projects, Nicolas Cage seldom plays characters incapable of handling themselves in a crisis. In SEEKING JUSTICE, however, he plays Will Gerard, a bookish school teacher with nothing more threatening to contend with than the occasional insolent student. However, this is still Nicolas Cage we are talking about and so when we are first introduced to Gerard, he is out celebrating Mardi Gras with his beautiful wife, knocking back shots, howling at the moon and cavorting around in a masquerade mask the way only Nic Cage could ever hope to get away with. Throughout the film his character becomes increasingly inconsistent in both his behaviour and actions, which could be attributed to the high stress situations he finds himself in, but might also be down to bad writing or last-minute changes on set. Despite all this, however, the film gives us little alternative but to get behind Gerard as he moves increasingly out of his comfort zone and into harm's way - and much of the credit for this must go to Donaldson and his assured direction.

Director Bill Condon's camera catches terror in her eyes; 100 pages of subtext in an instant. It is the most truthful moment of "The Twilight Saga" series thus far.

Most of the material covered in this book deals with the fundamentals of chemistry and physics of key processes and fundamental mechanisms for various combustion and combustion related phenomena in gaseous combustible mixture. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of burning processes and mechanisms of reaction wave propagation. The combustion of a gas mixture (flame, explosion, detonation) is necessarily accompanied by motion of the gas. The process of combustion is therefore not only a chemical phenomenon but also one of gas dynamics.
The material selection focuses on the gas phase and with premixed gas combustion. Premixed gas combustion is of practical importance in engines, modern gas turbine and explosions, where the fuel and air are essentially premixed, and combustion occurs by the propagation of a front separating unburned mixture from fully burned mixture. Since premixed combustion is the most fundamental and potential for practical applications, the emphasis in the present work is be placed on regimes of premixed combustion. This text is intended for graduate students of different specialties, including physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, computer science, mathematics and astrophysics.
