It’s my first illustrated historical romance cover, and I’m so IN LOVE with it!

So onto HOP goodies!! Now, I love all the candy. I have so many favorites, but I wanted to showcase one that wasn’t typical. Since I was born in Trinidad, I’m going to share a Trinidadian candy that I grew up with. It’s called Tunnock’s milk chocolate coated CARAMEL wafer biscuit. A mouthful, but a yummy mouthful!! It’s so good, layers of caramel goodness with thin wafers and all covered in chocolate. I’ve only ever seen it for sale in Queens, New York, but I think you can get it on Amazon, so let me know if you’ve ever tried it! For the hop, you can just write CARAMEL.

2021 Author List

Living in New York, many people have their stories, and so much of those are about loss. It is devastating. Each year, I can hardly bear to watch the coverage on television, remembering all the names of the people who died on that fateful day. It’s just heartbreaking.

Today marks a day twenty years ago when I was sure that my newly married husband of one year was one of the WTC victims. Standing at the base of the towers on the ground level just as the second plane hit, my husband was caught in a falling nightmare of metal, flame and human bodies. Slammed to the ground by the aftershock, he picked himself up, bruised and bleeding, and started running, helping those he could along the way. To this day, he will never tell me about the horror of what he saw around him, but I can only imagine.

He did not wait, like so many others to see what was happening, he just started walking uptown toward me he said, mercifully escaping the sudden subsequent collapse of the towers. My office at the time was at 40th and Park, where I was watching the news coverage in a state of shock with my colleagues and friends in a closed restaurant at the bottom of my building … knowing that my husband’s subway stop at WTC would be right after the first plane crash. My heart literally stopped.

Cell phones were out, no one could get through to anyone, and all I could see and hear were the sounds of utter chaos on the television. The sight of those planes crashing into the towers over and over, and the reporters trying to make sense of what was happening. I’ve never prayed harder than I did at that moment, and all I could think in my head were the words willing him to come to me, repeating over and over, “please be safe, please just get here, just come to me.”

And somehow impossibly, he did.

Somehow he heard those words and he walked over 60 blocks, not giving up, not stopping even when things appeared to be safe. He was barely out of range when the towers collapsed in a wave of concrete dust and smoke. If he had stayed, he would have been buried alive. He didn’t stop until he got to my building. I will never forget the moment I saw him standing at my office door at 99 Park Avenue hours later, looking a little worse for wear in a torn and bloody suit, but so thankfully, alive.

It is a memory I will never forget.

It is something I will always be thankful for.

I took my children back to New York a few years ago to see the memorial, and I could see them processing. They were so little then. When I explained that their dad’s name could have so easily been one etched in the stone like so many, I cried.

I have so many friends who have their own stories, some with not so happy endings. Husbands, wives, children, friends … so much loss. It is numbing. And heartbreaking. My thoughts go out to all those families who have lost loved ones, all of the heroes who fought valiantly to save lives and lost theirs in the process, those volunteers and front-line workers who are still suffering ill-effects of that poisonous air, and all the troops and everyday people who still fight to protect our freedoms every single day.

In remembrance, Nine Eleven, 2001. Those lost, we remember you, we honor you, we love you. Those who survived, like my husband, we are so incredibly blessed to have you with us, and we love you.

I’m super excited to share my holiday dessert recipe with you. It’s called TRINIDAD FRUIT CAKE or CHRISTMAS CAKE and it’s from the most recent edition of a famous Trinidadian cookbook called the Naparima Girls’ High School Cookbook that my parents got for me. I grew up in Trinidad & Tobago and this is a cake that many people love.

I won’t lie. IT IS SUPER HARD TO MAKE, but for the more determined bakers, this could be right up your alley!

Harrow Lake playlist by Kat Ellis

When I’m revising a manuscript, I always like to have a playlist that sums up the feeling of a certain scene, character, or even a setting. These were some of the songs and sounds I listened to for inspiration while I was working on Harrow Lake. 

Vinyl static – This might seem like a weird one to take inspiration from, but when Lola follows a trail of blood into her apartment at the beginning of the book, she hears this sound. It’s not silence, but it is a void you feel in your gut.

‘Tain’t No Sin by Lee Morse – This song is mentioned a few times in the book, and is a cheery little jazz song about peeling off your skin (or clothes, whatever) and dancing around when it’s hot.

Boogie Woogie Man by Glen Gray – This is the perfect character theme song for Mister Jitters, the monster in Harrow Lake. 

Paper Dress by Toadies –
A slightly more modern song this time! This is a song that feels very much like the tense, difficult relationship between Lola and her dad. 

Drowning by Banks –
The melancholy feel of this tune is like Lola’s mom, Lorelei, in song-form.

SCAVENGER HUNT PUZZLE

Directions: In my post, you’ll notice that I’ve hidden my favorite number in BLUE somewhere. Collect the favorite numbers of all the authors on each team, and then add them up.

Entry Form: Once you’ve added up all the numbers, make sure you fill out the form here to officially qualify for the grand prize. Only entries that have the correct number will qualify.

Rules: Open internationally, anyone below the age of 18 should have a parent or guardian’s permission to enter. To be eligible for the grand prize, you must submit the completed entry form by APRIL 5TH, at noon Pacific Time. Multi-award winning young adult author Melanie Hooyenga first started writing as a teenager and finds she still relates best to that age group. About the book:

Biz is a perfectly normal teenager except for one minor detail: she uses sunlight to jump back to yesterday. She takes advantage of flickering by retaking Trig tests, fixing fights with her boyfriend (or reliving the making up), and repeating pretty much anything that could be done better. Trouble is, flickering makes her head explode from the inside. Or feel like it anyway.

No one knows about her freakish ability and she’s content to keep it that way. Guys don’t stick around because she refuses to let them in, but all that changes when Cameron, her best friend, starts looking oh-so-yummy.
