A Winter's Walk - Christian Dior Pre-Fall 2012

When the weather outside is frightful, sometimes you just need to get outside and enjoy it...

In the past, I have found that on those especially dreary, or freezing fall/winter/spring days, sometimes the best way to beat the blues is to get out into that weather and enjoy it. Walking in the rain is almost always therapeutic, and a good way to cheer up when the grey skies have got you down.

These photos from Dior's Pre-Fall 2012 collection just gave me that delicious wintry-walking feeling, and I thought they were too pretty to keep from sharing. I was also delighted to see such classic and conservative looks featured. High fashion is not necessarily ridiculous and/or unattainable.

I love the hat in this first look, and the knit top with the built-in capelet is stylish and looks super cozy. The burgundy coat in the second image is so yummy, and I love how the pleats create a almost "petal" shaped skirt.

Continuing the color theme, the dress above is a tad more fuschia, and just so pretty. The long skirt and coverage up top give it an old-fashioned, ladylike flair. I could see this on the red carpet.

The second dress has a 1960s inspired silhouette, and is just lovely. The pale pink shade is very chic.

This last dress is one of my favorites. I think that white/cream/ivory can be worn all year round, and here it's updated and taken to a whole new level. The simple dress design is enhanced with a what seems to be a form of ribbon embroidery, and the wide, belt/waistband, keeps up the contrast and finishes it off. So classy...

These Dior pieces are only one of a few "Pre Fall 2012" collections that I've fallen in love with. I'm hoping to showcase the others over the next week or two. It's a bit strange to do "fashiony" writing after almost year of mostly staying away from it, but I'm enjoying seeing what's going on in the industry. What do you think? :)

Fashion Favorites from the 2012 Golden Globes

Another year, another red carpet, more fabulous gowns to admire, and more fashion mistakes to shudder over. The journey to the Oscars is getting more intense, now that the 2012 Golden Globes are over, and I've got the fashion scoop for you. As always, I do not recommend this awards show. (There's an unfortunate amount of immodesty and inappropriate jokes.) But I do love browsing the photos of those highest of high-fashion looks, and passing out praise or judgement on the good and the bad.

I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the trends this year, but a few things stood out. Pale neutral shades were abundant, as well as navy blue. Red continues to be a standard, and there were a few brave women in bright, almost neon, yellow. Fitted "mermaid" and "fishtail" gowns continue to be popular, as well an abundance of simple, a-line silhouettes, and a few surprisingly poofy skirts.

Here are my top four looks of the evening. These are the ones that stood out, had a more conservative and/or modest bend, and were just plain pretty. There were loads of other gorgeous dresses I wanted to include, and I do have some honorable mentions, but I'm going to restrain myself and just share these four. ;)

Bérénice Bejo in Gucci Première

It's so nice to have a fresh, new face on the awards scene, and Bérénice brings a lovely smile and a lovely dress. This gown is slightly deceiving... at first glance it appears very simple, but on closer inspection, it is a masterpiece of pleats, draping, and godets. I love the hemline and the detail at the waist. While I think a bold necklace would have finished off this ensemble just right, the simplicity of the look is charming, and the delicate earrings are lovely.

Jessica Chastain in Givenchy

This lady has got the poise of a modern-day Grace Kelly, and I think her dress was just a fantastic choice for this event. The pale shade complements her ivory skin-tone and gorgeous red hair, and the millions of tiny pearls add to the graceful and lady-like look. I'm even digging the oversized vintage-y earrings! This design is a tricky one to pull off, but it looks like Jessica was born to wear this dress.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

I'll admit right now that I am not an Angelina fan and usually am not crazy about her fashion choices. That's why this gown was a pleasant surprise. Its strength is in its simplicity, and enhances Angelina's grecian goddess persona. The striking fold of red at the shoulder is eye-catching, and matches perfectly with the clutch, and her lipstick. The only thing I'm not so crazy about is the slit up the front (which you can't see here)... but the asymmetrical back (one-shoulder strap) is my favorite. And minimal jewelry was definitely the right choice.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu

This woman not only won the top award at the ceremony, but is my pick for "Best Dressed." Michelle is known for unusual fashion choices, and often I don't like them, but I think she hit this one out of the park. The gown's fit is flawless and the dark blue/purple shade and velvety texture highlights her fair complexion perfectly. I think the simple stud earrings were a brilliant choice and I love the headband. It adds flair to her already amazing pixie-cut. Definitely a perfect and complete look, from head to toe.

Start the New Year with a New Skincare Regime from Simone France

I may never review another skincare product again. And that's because, after years of searching, I believe that I have found something that really works.

Sound too good to be true? I have to agree, and I keep pinching myself. This opportunity of working with Simone France has been a sort of dream come true, and I am so thrilled to be able to share with you what I've learned and how it has changed my skincare routine.

I have been having problems with my skin, especially breakouts, for the past decade. Puberty and those early teenage years brought on some of it, but it wasn't especially bad, and I expected that my skin would clear up by the time I was eighteen. (That's the way it's supposed to happen, once you're an adult, right?) But as the years passed, it only seemed to worsen.

I used various skincare and acne treatment products my mom picked out for me over the years, but nothing seemed to help. After doing lots of extensive reading on fashion and beauty (this was back in 2007/2008), I began to learn more about natural skincare and how to make your own products, using ingredients from your fridge. I came up with some decent things over the years, and continued to hold onto the hope that these "natural" remedies would be the miracle cure and give me clear, glowing skin. There was a little improvement, but it didn't last.

I tried many products over the years, buying only from Whole Foods, and opening each new product with nervous excitement, wondering if, finally, this would be the one that would change my life, and that I might never have to wear another drop of concealer in my life. That didn't happen.

About four years ago, I got into makeup. I never wore much (my mum never wore any) and the last thing I wanted was to end up with a mask of it plastered over my skin, but over the years I gradually used more and more. It became a kind of security, hiding breakouts, large pores, uneven skin tone, and "protecting" me from the reality that I hated my skin.

Dissatisfaction with the condition of my face became a big source of stress in my life. Fortunately, a few months back I was contacted by Simone France, with an opportunity to partner with them, try out their products, and review them on my blog. I was busy, and there wasn't a lot of free time for blogging. The email sat in my inbox for over a month and I almost didn't answer it. But I did.

I was provided with a link to a skin care analysis page where I answered a series of questions about my skin, my routine, and the problems I would like to correct. A few days later, I was contacted by Penny Kjellberg, one of the owners of the company, who sent me an extensive reply... sharing some of the things I was doing wrong and how I could remedy them. For instance, one little thing she shared with me is that powder (especially pressed, which was what I was using) was the worst foundation to use and clogged the pores, resulting in buildup and additional breakouts. I stopped using it right away and saw a small, but definite improvement over the next week.

And then Penny offered me the complete Simone France skincare system to try. I replied, "I would love to give the products a shot, and honestly, if they work for me and improve my skin, you will have a customer for life!" I was hopeful, but definitely skeptical. This all sounded too good to be true.

The products arrived and, super careful to follow the detailed instructions so that I wouldn't blow it, I used them. Yes, my skin did feel cleaner than it ever had in the past, and it looked a little better. The moisturizer didn't leave my skin feeling dry and tight, but kept it soft and hydrated all day. Maybe this was something special.

I continued to use the products - it's been nearly a month now - and all I have seen is improvement. The cleansing system thoroughly removes dirt, impurities, and dead skin cells and leaves my face in the best shape it's ever been in. The large pores, always an area that I hated in the past, have become smaller and more even and I don't feel like I have to smooth them out with powder. Dry, flaky skin has all but disappeared, and the slight scarring and unevenness in my skin tone has started to smooth out. Breakouts are much less frequent and less severe. (Most of my breakouts are in areas that are are usually hormone and stress relate, so there's only so much my skincare regime can do to change that... but having my skin finally clean and free from makeup has made a huge difference.)

I got rid of powder for all but the most special occasions, am careful to remove it as soon as I can, and plan to look out for a light liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer to do the job, now that I don't need as much coverage. My daily routine now only includes a little bit of foundation for touching up breakouts, and that only if I am stepping out of the house. For the first time in ages, I am not afraid to walk around with a completely makeup-less face. Seriously, this is kind of a big deal. ;)

New Year's Day Finery (with friends)

Happy New Year to everyone! (I can't believe how fast all of the holidays flew by!) I found it thoroughly enjoyable to kick back, spend time with family and friends and eat way more food than I usually do. Honestly, there were these amazing stuffed mushrooms that were so addicting. Today was my first day back at the gym after the holidays, and I am still feeling the effects of those hors d'oeuvres.

For New Year's Eve (and Day) we had some very special people up from Pennsylvania to celebrate with us, and my adorable and stylish friend Tayla agreed to pose with me for a few fashion-y pictures before my family's New Years Day party. Taking fashion shots with a friend was twice as fun, and made for lots of giggles. I definitely want to do this again in the future.

Tayla and I are both firstborns, rather OCD... and take an unhealthy delight in being organized. We both like cute movies, old fashioned clothing, talking about how lucky we are to be single, tasting samples (and then buying stuff) at Whole Foods, and drinking Kombucha. She's even more into healthy eating than I am, loves to cook, and makes vegan, raw and vegetarian dishes. Oh yes, and she also really liked the stuffed mushrooms.

I wish I had the brand names of everything Tayla was wearing on Sunday, but I will point out the gorgeous Indian designed flats that she's wearing (which accounts for the more-drastic-than-usual height difference... I was wearing heeled boots). The flats were handmade buy a woman at a flea market and have amazing embroidery. So, so pretty!

Christmas Film Classics

I don't know about you, but one of my favorite ways to get into the spirit of Christmas is by taking out those classic movies I've watched year after year, and revisiting my favorite characters, songs, and all those quotable moments. It's twice as fun when I'm introducing a classic to someone for the first time, whether it's my youngest sister, the B.I.L. (brother in law), or a dear friend.

I've compiled a list of the Christmas classics that my family tries to get out and watch almost every year. If you get a chance to pop in a DVD (or a VHS, you gotta love 'em) over the holidays, these are pretty much perfect for the occasion.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

This is always a fun way to revisit the holiday, despite the fact that no kid should be called a "blockhead," no matter what sort of Christmas tree he picks out. (Poor Charlie Brown!) Lucy and her Psychiatric Help booth is my favorite. And, of course, Linus is always on hand to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.

The Nutcracker

I danced ballet for five years when I was younger and this was always a favorite. If you can't get out to the actual ballet, this is the perfect substitute for the Christmas season. The cast is excellent and Macaulay Culkin as Drosselmeyer's Nephew is absolutely adorable. My brother looked just liked M.C. when he was little, and it makes this twice as fun to watch.

Meet Me In St. Louis

This one is not necessarily known as a holiday classic, but the film marches through each season of the year in beautiful and amusing ways (love the Halloween scenes), and the story reaches its climax on Christmas Eve. Judy Garland puts in one of her most memorable performances, introducing the song "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and Margaret O'Brien steals the show with her brilliant acting. This is one of my top three Judy films and highly recommended.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens' classis Christmas story has had many adaptations, but this is the one that stole our hearts. You might think that a "Muppet" retelling would be ridiculous, but this movie is surprisingly heartwarming, tragic, and even spooky. Michael Caine is a fabulous Ebenezer Scrooge and the supporting cast of Muppets is equally talented. Oh yes, and the music is fabulous. (On a side note, the widescreen version of this film cuts out the tune "The Love is Gone," which is one of my favorite moments in the movie and really brings you to that crushing, emotional low where you want to bawl your eyes out. Not a good choice by whoever put together the anniversary edition. Watch the fullscreen version.)

White Christmas

This is not only one of the greatest Christmas classics, but one of my favorite films ever. The music is fantastic, including the tunes "White Christmas," "Snow," "Sisters," and more. Oh yes, and there's also my favorite movie dance of all time, where Danny Kaye and Vera Ellen prove that "The Best Things Happen While You're Dancing." Danny is hysterical throughout this entire movie, Vera is an exceptional dancer, and then (of course) there's Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. The latter is one of my favorite voices of the era, and she just shines through the whole film ("Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me" is is superb). Just go watch this already!

It's A Wonderful Life

The Christmas movie to end all Christmas movies and one of the most touching and uplifting films ever made. I don't think there's anyone out there who fails to identify in at least some small way with George Bailey, embodied by the always amazing Jimmy Stewart, as he takes an incredible Christmas journey and learns that "no man is a failure who has friends." If you are an American, this movie is a requirement. And if you aren't, see it anyway. Can never recommend this highly enough.

Special mention goes to another bunch of Christmas-y classics: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, The Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, The Year Without a Santa Claus, Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone 1 and 2 (can't honestly recommend these since there's language and many cringe-worthy moments, but Macaulay Culkin is adorable), and The Nativity Story (excellent telling of the real Christmas story - sorry, Santa!).

Another film (and book) that always makes me think of Christmas is Little Women. The opening scenes (and chapter in the book) are such a lovely depiction of a family coming together in 1860s New England. The film version with June Allyson is my favorite.

Lastly, my Nana's favorite film comes to a sweet conclusion during the Christmas season. If your grandmother remembers this movie, An Affair to Remember, starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, you might just want to dig it out for the holidays.

As we draw towards the close of this year, it's a time for reflection, for looking back on the things we've learned, done... and failed to do. This past year had some incredible highs and amazing blessings. It also hit some lows, presented extreme challenges, and left me with some things that I still need to work through. But I am thankful.

Looking back at the things we've accomplished in the year can be inspiring and encouraging. hush - lovely layers

Here in Massachusetts we've had an unusually mild fall (except for the freak snowstorm before Halloween, of course), but now the chill is finally starting to set in. I find myself thinking far too much about turning up the heat, and dream of cozy things to wear... sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves, leg warmers, and more. There's nothing like soft and comfy layers to keep out the chill, and when I stumbled across this collection by hush, I pretty much fell headfirst.

These looks are some of the prettiest things I've seen in a long time, and I'd love nothing more than to have the entire line at my disposal. I used to think that fashion and discomfort walked hand in hand, and this is sometimes true (hello, skyscraper high heels!), but it is also possible to be relaxed and comfortable without sacrificing style.

For years I've worn leggings under skirts and dresses during the winter (along with tights, which I love), and I still think there's nothing more comfy, casual and stylish than some leggings with a long top (or a short dress) and a pair of boots.

Sweaters are one of my favorite things, and hard for me to resist. (This year I forced myself to discard a few of the dozen or so that I've collected. For the record, 95% of them were given to me. ;) I think that sweaters are the perfect way to make an outfit cozy, whether it's a casual shirt and pants or a little black dress with high heels. Soft, draping sweaters are feminine, romantic, and so practical.

I remember disliking wearing scarves as a kid, but now I think they're one of the best things to take away the chill, indoors as well as out. Nobody wants to wear turtleneck sweaters 24/7, and a scarf can fill in a lower neckline and keep you from freezing. And I've heard that the "you that know you lose like 80% of your body heat through your head" statement is a myth, but there's no denying that a hat goes a long, long way to keeping you warm. Just try it.

Lastly, some nice pajamas can definitely contribute to making the season merry and bright... whether you're just lounging around, reading books and sipping cocoa, or opening presents on Christmas morning. And when you're down with an awful cold and in bed for the greater part of five days (yes, that's me - I got it bad this time), comfort is really, really important.

A few small things I like about December...

Hooray! It's here! December is, in my opinion, "the most wonderful time of the year." We had an extra special day yesterday, not only welcoming the new month, but welcoming my newest nephew, Henry James, into our family. (You may remember that his big brother, Jack was born two years ago, on December 3rd.) He's a precious sweetheart, and I'll share a picture as soon as I find one where he doesn't look like an old man. ;)

Anyway, December is here, and I am so ready to relax and enjoy it. Here's just a handful of my favorite things about this month...

The visitors playing in the snow. Every year, watching the blood-red cardinals flitting through the bushes in our backyard just gives me a thrill...

Mittens. Gloves may be more stylish, but if, like me, you lose circulation the moment you step out the door, you really want to keep your fingers all cuddled together. That's the only way mine stay cozy on a ski mountain.

All those treats that we'll eat. 'Tis the season for an expanding waistline. Please practice moderation.

Brown paper packages tied up with string. Really, there are loads of creative, easy, and visually stunning ways to wrap your gifts this year. Click here for some more ideas.

Thanksgiving: A Double Take

Thanksgiving 2011 came and went... and it was so nice. A very low key day, with close family and good times. We shot "turkeys" in the backyard (balloons), stuffed ourselves to the bursting point (although once again I failed to realize my full potential - how come I can never eat as much at Thanksgiving as I can at other times???) and I even went undefeated in Wii Sport boxing.

As always, there is much, much, much to be thankful for. I have the love and support of an amazing family, caring and dedicated friends, a really great job that fits perfectly into my life right now, and a God who is looking out for me and gives me more grace than I could ever begin to deserve.

AND the weather was beautiful. I kept the food prep simple this year (see more below) and had plenty of time to shoot some photos. No, I wasn't suffering from multiple personality disorder or dreaming about a twin sister; I just decided to totally rip off a clever photo idea I saw online. It made editing pictures twice the usual fun... and I am definitely doing this again sometime. ;)

The blouse was made in Indonesia, looks as if it is handmade, and has these cute little flower pinwheels around the yoked neckline. I am just crazy about this orange-y red color - so much fun to wear! The jeans and jacket are favorites of mine, as are the shoes (which I've had for almost four years now) but I ended up ditching them for some black flats (that I just got as Savers for $5) before the party started. High heels are not the most practical way to carry around a person stuffed full of turkey. :P

For the first time in a while, I didn't go crazy and make my usual sweet desserts or fancy recipes. Instead, I stuck to a couple of appetizers for earlier in the day. I gave Martha Stewart's Sweet Onion Dip a try. At first, I was disappointed with the way it tasted, but after it sat in the fridge overnight it was delicious. The onions really soaked through the whole thing and made it sweet and yummy. It was a big hit.

I also cooked a basic Cheese Fondue (I've been using this recipe for years - it's so easy!) which is always popular. Yesterday was no exception.

This was the first year that I decided to brave the crowds and try a little bit of "Black Friday" shopping. Lydia and I pried our eyes open until midnight and headed over to Kohl's to shop their deals. We pulled into the parking lot to find banners proclaiming that (contrary to the flyers) it didn't start until 1 am. We both said "forget it," and thus ended our "Black Friday" adventures. We'll see if I get up the courage to join the insanity next year...

P.S. I totally forgot to mention the new hair! I've actually had it this way for about a month now, and really love it. I've wanted a long bob for a while and finally decided to take the plunge. It's been so much fun trying different styles - straight, super curly, ends-flipped-out-like-Mary-Tayler-Moore... a total blast. I'm planning on growing it back out again, but am pretty sure this style will be revisited sometime in the future. ;)

Pretties and Inspirations for the week...

Scarves are probably the most beautiful and brilliant accessory ever invented. I love when you find that one that is just the perfect color, length and texture. And soft, moss green sweaters are just... mmmm.

Words like these give me perspective, encourage me to be more productive and not take one day for granted, and offer a special sort of comfort.

I am not a huge of pumpkin or cinnamon rolls, but this Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll Pancake recipe sounds intriguing. :)

Add some interest and personality to your wardrobe with homemade boot socks. They're super simple, keep you cozy, and look completely fab.

This is kind of what it looked like here in Massachusetts after the freak snow storm a couple of weeks ago... except that every tree lost branches, nearly buried our house, and took out the electricity.

Surprising and unique furniture is one of my favorite things... and this corner sofa fits the bill. So unexpected and totally chic.

The organization freak in me also loves to find the prettiest and most practical ways to store and display things. This necklace rack (featuring adorable mis-matched doorknobs) fits the bill perfectly.

Yes, things can be functional and still look good. I'm not sure what the price tag is on this laptop case, but I'm loving it.

Recycle, reuse, and turn the ordinary into something beautiful! This first gorgeous gift box is made from a used plastic wrap or tin foil box. And what quicker and better way to gift cookies than in a couple of water bottles? Brilliant.

Vintage hair and makeup is THE BEST.

I love trailers and campers that are made over into homes, and this one is close to perfection. So comfortable, realistic, and peaceful.

I've had a lot on my mind over the past month, and these words gave me even more to ponder. I am rather obsessive about holding onto things, but now I wonder if there comes a time to let one dream go and reach for another. Still trying to figure out how it all works, but it's a beautiful thought.

Vintage Film Noir Looks from Gucci

Fall fashion is just the best. In my mind, there's nothing as wonderful as boots, scarves, hats, gloves, and a fabulous coat. The extra layers provide so much room for creativity, a chance to work with different textures, patterns and colors, and you can always wear a light, breezy gown underneath, if you are so inclined. (That's the sad thing about summer. You can't put a winter coat on over your sundress. :P)

When I saw these images from Gucci's FallWinter 2011 collection, I was struck by the vintage "film noir" feel. You can just imagine the a girl wearing these ensembles... walking in the lamplight of a deserted street. Maybe she's got a long-kept family secret. Maybe she's a detective on the edge of unraveling a mystery. Or maybe she just has impeccable taste in clothing. Regardless, the coat, hat, and boots make her look confident and ready to handle whatever comes her way. (And if Agatha Christie is writing this story, it's probably going to be dangerous. ;)

I absolutely love this coat. Double-breasted styles are classic and flattering on most figures, and the deep blue shade is perfect. Bright jewel tones can be added throughout the fall and are very popular for winter. I love the pairing of the different shades in the coat, hat and scarf... all in the same family, but different.

The magenta/maroon ensemble also blends similar colors in harmony. The wide-brimmed hats and something poufy around the neckline really make most of these looks. Whether the poufy thing is fur, the collar of the coat, or a scarf, it adds strength and shape to the look. And a wide-brimmed hat looks extra sharp with a feather. ;)

When you think of strength, black is the color that comes to mind. It's a great basic shade for a classic look, and goes with (almost) everything. A good pair of black boots is also an big fall essential. I'd suggest that they're no so skyscraper-ish as the ones shown here. :P Also, a skinny belt adds definition and interest to a look that could be too plain on its own.

The olive color of this dress evokes the uniforms of World War II, which was happening during the height of the film noir era. The dress is accessorized with simple neutrals, but the bright scarf adds a punch of color, perking up the entire outfit.

There's nothing like a beautiful red dress for an evening out. This one, with it's subtle - yet intricate - draped fabric, is dressed up and with a matching neck scarf and a decorative rose. An oversized clutch, bracelet and shoes add an unusual touch, and the simple ponytail is an excellent finish.

Once again, it's hard to beat black when it comes to classics. The LBD on the left finds its strength in simplicity, with minimal accessories and decoration. The flowing, more daytime-appropriate look on the right has a simple polka-dot pattern, which is its own accessory. Some things just don't need embellishment.

I think I'm going to be keeping a look out for a wide-brimmed hat this winter... and maybe a longer coat. Who doesn't want to be Ingrid Bergman or Lauren Bacall every now and again? ;)

Birthday Yummies

The food at my birthday last month was just so amazing (if I do say so myself ;) that I wanted to share some pictures and recipes, however belated. After years of thinking food was just a waste of time, I've recently become more interested in yummy things, especially when it comes to creating dishes for holidays or special events. I was planning to make my own cake (it's a tradition in my family now - I've been making mine since I was super little :), and really wanted something scrumptious. A cake that would taste great (in general, I am not a cake person) and fit my personality.

After browsing my food pins on Pinterest, I decided to give this Blueberry Velvet Cake with Blueberries and Cream Cheese Frosting a try. (Just because I am mildly fascinated with all things blueberry and the color blue is my favorite. :) We use mostly all-natural ingredients when we cook, and so I omitted dyeing the angel food cake blue (don't need any more chemicals in my body than necessary, thank you!), which didn't make it quite as stunning, but I threw extra blueberries into the mix and put a ton more on top.

I made the cake using whole wheat flour that we grind ourselves and it came out fabulous. You never know if a recipe will work as well without the usual white flour, but the angel food cake was pretty perfect. I ended up baking it in three layers instead of two, doubling the (amazing) cream cheese frosting and smearing the whole thing with it. Oh yeah, and with the addition of the blueberry sauce... it was superb. (For the record, my enthusiasm for this cake was echoed by everyone else. It's definitely kind of sweet, but I really, really recommend you try out the recipe. Five stars, in my opinion! :)

I really have a thing for Italian food, and had been craving gnocchi for the better part of a year, so mom picked some up at Trader Joe's and used a Sage and Butter Sauce recipe she found online. It had lots of garlic and was just delicious. :) And she made her most amazing chicken parmesan. She doesn't even have a recipe; just does it in her head, and it's perfect every time. (Do a quick google search and I'm sure you'll find something almost as good. ;) I think the real key with Italian food is to drown it. I've had dishes at a couple of nice places that were just way too dry and blah. You need lots of tomato sauce, butter, cheese, garlic, et cetera... It's all about making it moist and yummy. :)

I'm always rushing around like a crazy lady before dinner on my birthday, with the cooking and baking, so I never have much time to decorate, but this year I managed to slap some candles and flowers/weeds on the table. ;) Floating tea lights in dishes and vases are my favorite thing right now (I just got a couple of huge blue glass bowls that I want to try out) and some rocks from the ocean looked really pretty in the bottom of the vase. (Finally, some way to put to use all the rocks and sea shells I've collected from the beach every summer!) I'm also thinking some colored marbles would be gorgeous... hmmm.

Another super-product from Sibu Beauty...

A couple of months ago, I had the fantastic opportunity to review the Sea Buckthorn Balancing Facial Cleanser from Sibu Beauty, and immediately became a fan of their products. (See my review here.) As I've said before, I am big into doing things the all natural way, and try to purchase organic products whenever possible, if my budget allows. (Fortunately, being a super-nanny has helped that a little bit. ;)

But not all "all natural" products are created equal. Some of them, despite their nice claims, contain ingredients that are not natural, and sometimes downright harmful. Selecting products, especially for something as sensitive as your face, can be tough. I was already a big fan of Sibu Beauty's facial cleanser, and eager to try some more products, so when they sent me the Sea Buckthorn Daytime Facial Cream to review, I was thrilled. To put it mildly. ;)

I've been using this moisturizer for almost two weeks now, and so far it's all good. The facial cleanser had more of a citrus scent, but this cream is more buttery and kind of smells like honey. It seems a bit thick when you first rub it on (remember to always put creams on while your face is slightly damp, to lock in moisture), but blends into your skin quickly. (And it doesn't leave a heavy scent like regular moisturizers do, which is great, since they usually make me feel queasy.) It seems to hydrate the skin well, without leaving a residue or any heaviness. It's really great under makeup, and acts as a protectant now that the change in temperature is making my skin drier.

I will admit that I love the Sibu Beauty facial cleanser best of all (it's just so refreshing!) but this moisturizer finishes things off really nicely after cleansing and toning. And all those healthy things inside it just make you feel even better about putting it on your skin. :)

If you hadn't already heard about them from my previous review, I highly recommend you check out Sibu Beauty. I can honestly say that I love their products and am looking forward to trying more of them in the future. Their eye cream must be fantastic... ;)

On the Other Side of the Fence

Well, my twenty-third birthday came and went, and it all seems a tad bittersweet. I spent the first seventeen years of my life feeling kind of sad every time I hit another year... and the chances of Peter Pan coming to my window steadily decreased. But then eighteen came and things got kind of exciting. I'd just gotten my license and then I started up a job teaching sewing at Jo-Ann fabrics. Both experiences gave me confidence and a sense of independence that I'd never had before (in a good way, not a rebellious one - it was a big step for shy little me to have to solve problems for myself). Anyway, ever since then, each birthday has presented itself as an exciting adventure, bringing new opportunities (and responsibilities) and hopefully moving me closer towards my life goals and the things that I have set out to accomplish.

And then came this birthday. I am as excited as ever, but now I also feel just a tiny bit unnerved, finding myself at the age by which I once assumed I'd have accomplished all my goals... and be married and settled down. And I'm not.

It's been a bit strange to think about, now that I am that age I've always looked up to. But I couldn't be more grateful to be exactly where I am.

I'm so glad all my life goals are not yet accomplished. (That would be incredibly boring. ;) I'm looking forward to a life full of continuing adventures and explorations... and remaining ambitious, full of purpose and ideas, until I die.

And I'm so glad I'm not married and settled down. My brain at thirteen couldn't wrap itself around all the things I would still have to learn when I was twenty-three, and how thankful I'd be that I still have time to learn, to grow, and to become (hopefully) a much nicer person than I am now. There's a whole lot of selfish to get out of my system. I know it's never really going to be gone completely, but am thankful for the time I've been given to keep working at it.

God is so good, and so much bigger than I can imagine. (Even with an imagination as big and sometimes frightening as the one He's given me. ;) And each birthday is a sweet reminder of how He's always got me moving forward, towards the goal, and that He is able to keep my feet from slipping. That's awfully comforting when you're thinking about college at a time when everyone else your age is finishing it, still hacking away at part-time jobs and freelance work, and wondering if that lifelong-dream career will ever materialize. I'm excited for the adventure, but thankful that He can see the road map. ;)

My birthday was relaxing and lovely (it was last Thursday, the 29th, in case you wanted to know ;). The weather was supposed to be miserable and rain all day long, but it held back so that I could snap some quick photos in the woods. And later the sun showed me its face, albeit briefly.

I super-nanny-ied for a couple of hours, came home and made myself an Angel Food Cake with blueberries inside and cream cheese frosting. Mum whipped up Chicken Parmesan and Gnocchi for supper. I was in Italian food heaven, and the dessert was just perfect. Photos and some recipes will be forthcoming. :)

I spend the evening with my immediate family, my grandmother and some cousins who are currently in town. It was low-key, cozy, and just about perfect.

The woodsy photo shoot was inspired by this hand-me-down plaid shirt (you know who you are! ;), which usually wouldn't be my thing at all, but I paired it up with a favorite white tank, some $3.50 thrift-store jeans and the awesome black boots I got at the end of last winter... and I ended up getting some nice complements on the plaid. I really think I like it. :) Over the years I've moved further away from the "eyelet-lace and pearls" look that used to be my style (although I still love ladylike ensembles!) and it's times like this when I am pleasantly surprised to find something I never would have thought would be "me," suddenly seem so right.

Watch me turn into a pumpkin

Yay! It's FALL! :) (I've always liked the word "fall." Maybe it's because, every year without fail, I fall in love with this season. And the leaves also fall off the trees. ;) The only thing I don't like about this time of year is how quickly it flies by. I feel like each season is over before I am able to fully drink it in. (Except for maybe winter. This is New England.) Before you know it, Christmas will be upon us.

In the meantime, I love the fact that one of my favorite colors - a yummy, burnt orange - becomes suddenly vogue, and I get an instant seasonal boost just from wearing it. This outfit came about when I found (well, my sis Lydia really deserves the credit) this amazing skirt at Savers (during that crazy, annoying 50% off sale that comes like three times a year). It's in very dancer-ish, and so flow-y and drape-y and perfect. :)

The awesome thing about this skirt is its versatility. It has an nice stretchy waistband that can be folded down, unrolled so that it stands up and makes the shirt/skirt combo look more like a dress (see 1st pic), or paired with a belt (see 2nd pic, above). I can't wait to try it out with different blouses and come up with even more options.

The sad news is, the bottom heel of one of my shoes broke off (and was lost) at a wedding I attended last weekend. (Fortunately, it was at the end of the day, although I walked around Whole Foods afterwards with a limp. ;) The good news is that summer is over and the shoes wouldn't be worn much more this year. And now that I am working part time as a supernanny ("Just a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down!") I'll have more pennies to save, and can search for an awesome replacement pair next spring. :)

Anyway, I hope everyone is falling for fall. I've got just one more week to be twenty-two before the clock strikes midnight and I turn into a pumpkin. (Who would have guessed that that's what happens to you on your twenty-third birthday?)

There's less than a week left to summer, and already I'm feeling nostalgic. What was the best thing about your summer, or your favorite memory?

I'm off to a wedding tomorrow, but I'll be around with a more substantial post next week. I hope everyone is happy and feeling blessed.
