Tip of the Day: Remembering Choreography

Q: Younger dancers tend to have a hard time picking up choreography when learning recital dances. How can I, as their teacher, make it easier for them to remember?

A: A fun way to help dancers remember their choreography is to incorporate the choreography into their class warm up. This helps them see it at least one more time besides when learning the dance at the end of class.

Another way to help them remember choreography, is to always add steps in sets of 4 or 8. This helps them stay on the music and keep rhythm.

Another idea is to use a theme step that is repeated every time the chorus plays. This gives the dancers something to get back into, even if they don't remember the rest of the dance, they at least know that. ;)

Tip of The Day: Prevent Sickling

Q: How to prevent my foot from sickling?

The sickle is usually caused by an imbalance in strength between the peroneals (specifically the fibularis longus) and the tibialis anterior muscles. (very basically) One starts at the outside of the tibia, crosses at the ankle and attaches to the base of the first metatarsal (at the bottom of the foot) and the other starts at the top of the fibula, goes behind the bump at the outside of the ankle, through a groove in the heel and attaches at the exact same spot as the tibialis anterior. The two muscles aid in plantar flexion, dorsi flexion, inversion and eversion. The dancer needs to build the muscles equally so one does not over power the other to cause the foot to sickle or pull in from the base of the metatarsal.

A great exercise to help with everything from shin splints to plantar fasciitis to a simple sickle is called The Alphabet. At least twice per day, have your dancer draw the alphabet with her foot. Pretend the toe is the pen and she is trying to etch the letters into a picture. All of the movement is at the ankle and the dancer should try to exaggerate the curves of the letters. If done properly, the dancer should feel muscle fatigue on the outside edge of the lower leg, just above the ankle by the time they finish the alphabet. The exercise will help to balance the strength in both sets of muscles and should (along with other work to focus on keeping heels forward) correct a sickle - among other problems. It's a very good simple exercise that can correct a number of dancing related issues.

Dance Tip of the Day: To Warm Up or Not?

Today's Tip is from one of our dance instructor, Shannon Thomas.

Q: Why is it so important to do a warm up before dance performances and competitions?

A thorough warm up is necessary before performing any physical activity, especially in the art of dance and performance. When dancing, you are not only using your powerhouse muscles, like the quadriceps, glutes and abdominal muscles. You are using all of the little tiny connecting muscles in the hip joints, neck, shoulders, feet, and knees. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare the body from head to toe before a performance or rigorous dance classes.

A proper warm up for a dancer should consist of cardio, plies, tendus, ron de jambes, stretching, leg swings/battements, petit allegro and then progressions across the floor pertaining to the pending performance. Wearing proper warm up sweats and attire is also key to maintain the warm up as your performance goes on.

The Benefits Of Learning To Dance For One's Health And Social Life

Most people like the feel of their bodies moving according to a specific rhythm. Others prefer doing it in private while some get hyped up with the presence of other people. Dancing is an activity that encompasses age, gender and social structures. In addition to that, one gets access to the many benefits of learning to dance.

Dance is basically the movement of one's body, anyone can actually dance or formally learn to dance. There are no restrictions in terms of how old or young a person can be to enjoy the benefits of dance. In fact, more and more people are starting to realize and fully benefit from the good things that dancing brings. For one, it is highly entertaining compared to the gym routines that eventually tend to be boring. In addition to that, it really puts the entire body to work. In fact, one can burn a minimum of 400 calories when dancing continuously for about half an hour.

A standout health-related benefit of dancing is flexibility. This is acquired eventually as one works from one movement to another in a dance routine. Aside from the set stretching exercises at the start of every dance class, most of the steps when dancing actually help in developing and continuously improving one's overall flexibility.

Another one of the many healthy benefits of learning to dance is endurance. Since dancing is a physical activity, it makes the body work for a period of time. As one gets to dance more and more, the muscles gain the ability to work longer over time.

As dancing exercises the body physically, it also works on the social skills in every individual. Except for those who prefer dancing in private, most dancers get to enjoy their favorite moves in the presence of others or while performing for others. Some join dance classes while others simply love to go out dancing.

Because humans are sociable by nature, it is common to people meet other people who share the same love and passion for dance moves as they are. Whether it is ballet or the more social dancing clubs, they give individuals a chance to move their bodies to the beat and at the same time meet some new acquaintances and possibly even develop lasting relationships and friendships.

There are also people who find relaxation and peace of mind in dancing. This is mostly related to ballet dancing, ballroom dancing and modern dancing. Other people, on the other hand, find dancing as the perfect way of expressing what they truly feel inside such as in krumping and other similar street styles of dance. Still for some others, dancing is a way of life. It helps say what is hard to say. It helps do what is hard to do. It can build confidence and define their individuality. With the many benefits of learning to dance, there is no doubt that this is one activity every individual should try out at least once in their lifetime!

Congratulations ADC Dancers on a successful Christmas Show

We would like to congratulate the dancers and staff of our brand new Christmas Show "12 Days of Christmas!" Over 100 ADC dancers performed to a sold out theater at Embry-Riddle on Sunday December 5th. The show not only had elegant swans and cute french hens, we also had a guest performance opening number, "Hot Chocolate" from Dance Depot in Umatilla!

We would like to thank the parents, dancers and volunteers who made this show possible! ADC is lucky to be a part of such a great community of people always willing to lend a helping hand! Looking forward to upcoming holiday performances at New Smyrna Beach Showdoll Christmas Show, Spruce Creek High School Dance Show, and the Ormond Beach Parade!

Owners and Directors

Amanda Bell has been the owner and director of Amanda’s Dance Center for over 13 years, where she teaches ballet, jazz, point, tap, and acrobatics. Prior to her taking over the studio, she was a 13-year alumnus of Debco School of Dance. As a member of the “Debco Dancers” Competition Group, Amanda taught for 4 years and also won numerous awards and scholarships. She is currently a member-through test certificationof Florida Dance Masters. She has served on their board of directors, and is currently on the scholarship committee. She is also the Artistic Director of the Lauren Cox Memorial Benefit Concert in Ormond Beach. Amanda’s students can be seen performing at various community events and have won numerous awards and scholarships on the regional and national level. Most recently her dancers won Gold & Platinum awards at OnStage NY’s Nationals Competition in Orlando. “Exceptional Choreography” awards were given to Amanda & Shannon for the creation of those dances as well a “Class Act” Award for the studio demonstrating appropriate costuming & etiquette. Some of her students have even gone on to dance & perform at Oklahoma City University, Tisch School of the Arts, University of Florida and Florida State- one student is currently in the Theatre Program at FSU.

In addition to teaching at the studio, Amanda has been a guest choreographer and instructor for several Florida Dance Master events in West Palm Beach, Orlando, and Sanford. She also choreographed the American Musical Theatre’s production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying at Seabreeze High School, the world premier of Disney’s New version of Aladdin with Center Stage Kids, and was the dance & acrobatic instructor for the Atlantic Center for the Arts at the Harris House for the past three summers. This season Amanda is developing a dance curriculum that can be integrated into the after-school programs & daycares to bring the benefits of dance to those kids that are unable to attend studio classes. Her three greatest productions are her sons Dillon Matthew and Addison Lee and daughter Caydon Hawley!

David Bell has developed and directed summer theatre programs for six schools and two theatres. He is a graduate of the University of Florida and taught high school English and Drama full time in Stuart, Florida. He began his theatrical career at age 12 and has acted in, produced, directed, and worked on community, semiprofessional, and professional productions throughout Florida, and also appeared in a feature film. Several years ago, he had the pleasure of performing with and directing his friend, Alicia Minshew, (All My Children’s Kendall Hart) in the musicals Little Shop of Horrors and Godspell. David worked as a substitute teacher for Volusia County Schools. He is employed by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department and is the owner, drama instructor, and artistic director of Center Stage Theatricals, featuring the Center Stage Kids Musical Theatre Camp, producing such shows as Grease, Mulan, Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka, The Little Mermaid, Toy Story, The Wizard of Oz, and High School Musical. Last year, Center Stage Kids produced the pilot and world premier of Disney’s new version of Aladdin Kids, lending ideas and concepts that have been incorporated in the script being published and distributed by Disney, worldwide! This summer,his theatre production company produced the very first production of Disney’s High School Musical 2 Jr. His group was one of 50, out of 35,000 selected to perform in Atlanta for Music Theatre International’s Junior Theatre Festival.

Deborah Coe owned and operated her own studio in the Daytona Beach area for 14 years before returning to college to earn her Master’s Degree in Dance Pedagogy. She has taught and choreographed in the dance programs at Western Kentucky University and Texas A&M University. In addition to teaching in Daytona Beach she teaches master classes and teacher training workshops throughout the state. Ms. Coe holds memberships in Florida Dance Masters, and the Educational Kinesiology Foundation. She has been tested and certified as a dance adjudicator by the National Dance Teachers Council of America and judges at numerous dance competitions nationally. Her students have gone on to dance professionally in venues from Disney World to the Joffrey Ballet. She has served on the Artistic Board for the Daytona Beach Civic Ballet, the Lauren Cox Memorial Scholarship Concert Series and the Board of Directors of Florida Dance Masters. Shannon Johnson Thomas grew up in Daytona Beach, FL where she began dancing at the age of 4 at Debco School of Dance now known as Amanda's Dance Center. She studied ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, lyrical, acrobatics, modern, and musical theater. She was a member of ADC Elite Company. While living in Florida, Shannon was extremely involved in the dance community locally and statewide. She was awarded many awards and won the over-all dancer scholarship with Florida Dance Master's at the age of 18. Shannon participated in many workshops and conventions classes with numerous icons in the dance world; Joe Tremaine, Frank Hatchett, Gus Giordano, Dee Caspary, Mandy Moore, Lizzie MacKenzie, Randy Duncan, and Patsy Swayze. She was also a part of Jazz Dance World Congress. Shannon attended Oklahoma City University's Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management to study Dance Performance. She studied extensively in ballet, tap, jazz, theater dance, dance pedagogy, anatomy, and choreography under such people as Jo Rowan, Robert Reed, Tiffany Van der merwe, Patricia Oplotnik, and Kay Sandel. While attending OCU, Shannon was a part of the prestigious American Spirit Dance Company for 4 years. While at OCU, she performed with and honored such celebrities as Susan Powell, Art and Nancy Stone, Cholly Atkins, Leonard Reed, Marion Coles, and Donald O'Conner. She has worked for corporate entertainment company Shows in a Box as a choreographer and dancer for Industrials, Conventions and Trade Shows. Shannon was also Magician's Assistant and Dance Captain for The World of Magic. She recently performed with Surfscape Contemporary Dance Theatre in their Rock Opera to Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall." Heather Zebell has been dancing since the age of 4. She grew up in Port Orange, FL starting her first years of dance at Debco School of Dance. After dancing for 5 years, Heather decided to become a part of the performing company as a dedicated member for 7 years. She performed and competed in many styles of dance with ADC Elite including ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and lyrical. Heather did find her nitch. With her long graceful limbs and delicate frame, ballet came natural. After years of hard work Heather was awarded Runner Up in the Miss American Dance Awards where she competed Nationally for the title in Boston, MA. She was also awarded ballet scholarships from the prestigious Florida Dance Masters Scholarship Program. Heather was a part of the Civic Ballet's "The Nutcracker" for 3 years. Heather's love of dance started at young age and has continued to flourish as she has recently come into motherhood. Heather is excited to be a part of Amanda's Dance Center again!

Amanda Bell, as Owner and Director of Amanda's Dance Center, completed her 14th year of ownership of the Daytona Beach Dance Studio. The studio, formerly known as Debco School of Dance under the direction of Miss Deborah Coe, has been in business for a combination of 30 years. The first ten years in New York and the last twenty in Daytona Beach. Mrs. Bell was a student of Deborah Coe's and is proud to carry on the tradition of up-to-date dance training of the highest quality, in the Daytona area, offering BALLET, TAP, JAZZ, ACRO, TUMBLING , HIP-HOP, & POINTE to students starting at the age of 3. We now own a Ormond Beach Dance Studio since 2007 and are excited to grow!

The studio also offers Kindermusik classes, (by licensed instructor David), to parents and children up to age 3. We base our center around on a strong ballet technique and encourage our students to study all styles of dance. We do not consider ourselves a competition studio, we feel competition is fun and a great to work towards a goal, but we keep our standards high to produce quality versus quantity.

Amanda is a long time member of Florida Dance Masters, Incorporated; a group dedicated to keeping very high the standards of dance education in the state. She has been a workshop instructor and special guest choreographer for FDM's workshop and performance company; Main Attraction.

Amanda's students can be seen performing locally and nationally. Some have worked and performed with Disney, The Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, Sesame Street, Silvertree Productions, The Joffrey, Moscow, Orlando and Civic Ballets, and even as finalists on the first season of FOX's "So You Think You Can Dance."

Daytona Dance Studio Summer Dance Intensive

Summer Dance Intensive

At Summer Dance Intensive, dancers will take forty hours of classes the last week of June and the first week of July Monday through Thursday from 10:00am until 3:30 pm with a 30 minute lunch. Classes will be in ballet, pointe, modern, tap, jazz, conditioning, lyrical/contemporary, leaps and turns and stretching. Instructors will be Shannon Johnson Thomas and Deborah Coe. The Summer Dance Intensive is intended to help expand the education of the dancer and challenge them in an environment they can learn and grow in. At Amanda's Dance Center, it's about more than just dance! We base our Daytona dance studios and dance training around a strong emphasis on dance technique rather than competition. We teach children "how" to dance, not just "a" dance. We base our dance training on the foundation of ballet and encourage our dancers to try all forms of dance. We also believe in instilling self confidence, discipline, determination and integrity in our dancers to become not only great dancers, but great people! We offer dance classes for all ages with all levels of dance experience including pre-dance classes for 3 year olds and dance training for those aspiring to dance in college or professionally.
