Humans cannot foretell the future with any certainty. Time and again their efforts at prediction fail miserably. So a book of prophecies that did come true has to attract our attention. The Bible is such a book.

MANY Bible prophecies have come true in such detail that critics claim they were written after the fulfillment. But such claims are untrue. God, being almighty, is fully capable of prophesying. (Isaiah 41:21-26; 42:8, 9; 46:8-10) Biblical prophecies that came true are evidence of divine inspiration, not of late authorship. We will look now at one outstanding prophecy that came true providing additional proof that the Bible is God’s word, not just man’s.

The Prophecy Ezekiel uttered against Tyre

Ezekiel was another ancient writer who recorded divinely inspired prophecies. He prophesied from the end of the seventh century B.C.E. on into the sixth—that is, during the years leading up to the destruction of Jerusalem and then during the first decades of the Jews’ exile in Babylon. Even some modern critics agree that the book was written at approximately this time.

Ezekiel recorded a striking prophecy about the destruction of Israel’s northern neighbor Tyre, which had gone from a position of friendship with God’s people to one of enmity. (1 Kings 5:1-9; Psalm 83:2-8) He wrote: “This is what the Sovereign Lord Jehovah has said, ‘Here I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring up against you many nations, just as the sea brings up its waves. And they will certainly bring the walls of Tyre to ruin and tear down her towers, and I will scrape her dust away from her and make her a shining, bare surface of a crag. . . . And your stones and your woodwork and your dust they will place in the very midst of the water.’”—Ezekiel 26:3, 4, 12.

When was Ezekiel’s prophecy finally fulfilled, and how? Did this really happen?

The Siege Of Tyre by Babylon

Well, a few years after Ezekiel uttered the prophecy, the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, laid siege to Tyre. (Ezekiel 29:17, 18) It was not, however, an easy siege. Tyre was partially situated on the mainland (the part called Old Tyre). But part of the city was on an island about half a mile [800 m] offshore. Nebuchadnezzar besieged the island for 13 years before it finally submitted to him.It was, however, in 332 B.C.E. that Ezekiel’s prophecy was finally fulfilled in all its details.

Alexander the Great ultimately fulfilled the prophecy in 332 B.C.E.

At that time, Alexander the Great, the conqueror from Macedonia, was invading Asia. Tyre, secure on its island location, held out against him. Alexander did not want to leave a potential enemy at his rear, but he did not want to spend years in a siege of Tyre, as Nebuchadnezzar had done.

How did he solve this military problem?

He built a land bridge, or mole, across to the island, so that his soldiers could march across and attack the island city. Notice, though, what he used to build the mole. The Encyclopedia Americana reports: “With the debris of the mainland portion of the city, which he had demolished, he built a huge mole in 332 to join the island to the mainland.”

After a relatively short siege, the island city was destroyed. Moreover, Ezekiel’s prophecy was fulfilled in all its details. Even the ‘stones and woodwork and dust’ of Old Tyre were ‘placed in the very midst of the water.’

How a 19th-century traveler describe the site of ancient Tyre

A 19th-century traveler commented on what was left of ancient Tyre in his day, saying: “Of the original Tyre known to Solomon and the prophets of Israel, not a vestige remains except in its rock-cut sepulchres on the mountain sides, and in foundation walls . . . Even the island, which Alexander the Great, in his siege of the city, converted into a cape by filling up the water between it and the mainland, contains no distinguishable relics of an earlier period than that of the Crusades. The modern town, all of which is comparatively new, occupies the northern half of what was once the island, while nearly all the remainder of the surface is covered with undistinguishable ruins.”

The location, legacy and influence of ancient Tyre

Ancient Tyre was located on the Mediterranean coast, in modern-day Lebanon, approximately 50 miles (80 km) south of Beirut. The city was situated on a rocky island, about half a mile (800 m) offshore, and partly on the mainland.

The City rose to prominence in the 2nd millennium B.C.E. as a major trading hub. Its strategic location facilitated trade with Egypt, Greece, and Mesopotamia, amassing wealth and influence.

In this article, we discuss one of the major reasons why many from non-christian lands refuse to accept the Bible as the word of God. Historically, Christendom has claimed to believe in the Bible and to be it's guardian.

But the religious organisations of Christendom have been associated with some of the most appalling horrors of history, from the Crusades,and programs of the Middle Ages to the Holocaust of our own time.The truth is Christendom has proved to be a false friend of the Bible.

Christendom: An organisation filled with innocent blood from end to end

From it's very beginning Christendom has been befouled with bloodshed.After the Roman emperor, Constantine the Great, had accepted the Christianity of his day, making it the religion of state,yes after he presided over the religious Council of Nicaea,he had his oldest son put to death and thereafter his own wife,Fausta.In this way the very foundations of Christendom were befouled with blood.The Encyclopedia Britannica,11th Edition, Volume 6 ,page 989, paragraph 4.

Through the centuries that followed, Christendom's skirts have dripped with blood.If that blood could cry out, it would testify against the ten religious crusades that she carried on vainly against the "infidel" Muhammadans of the Middle East, the crimes of the religious inquisition,the religious wars between Roman Catholics and Protestants, her Hundred Years war her thirty Years War, and now, finally,her two world wars of the past recent century by means of which more blood was shed than has been shed since the founding of ancient Babylon by Nimrod, "a mighty hunter in opposition to Jehovah", four thousand two hundred plus years ago.

Has not the "error" of Christendom come to be far greater than that of ancient Jerusalem and Judah? From all the facts the answer is plainly yes!

Crusades and Conquests

The medieval Crusades against Muslims in the Middle East set a tone for centuries of conflict. The 1099 sack of Jerusalem, with its massacre of Jews and Muslims, exemplified the Crusaders' zealotry. This violence fueled anti-Islamic sentiment, shaping Western perceptions for centuries.

While the church was banning Bible translation, the pope was sponsoring massive military efforts against the Muslims in the Middle East.These came to be called "holy" Crusades,but there was nothing holy about them.The first termed that "People's Crusade" set the tone for what was to come.Before leaving Europe ,an unruly army, inflamed by preachers, turned on the Jews in Germany, slaughtering them in one town after another.

Why? Historian Hans Eberhard Mayer says:"The argument that the Jews,as the enemies of Christ, deserved to be punished was merely a feeble attempt to conceal the real motive:greed".

Inquisition and Persecution

The Spanish Inquisition, launched in 1478, institutionalized persecution. Jews, Muslims, and later Protestants faced torture, forced conversions, and death. Witch hunts across Europe claimed thousands of lives, mostly women, in a frenzy of fear and misogyny.

Consistently,God does not approve of living souls being tortured in this life. The Catholic Church used the notorious Inquisition to stamp out so called "heretics" by fiendish torture and burnings at the stake.In the sixteenth century alone, the Catholic Inquisition burned more than 30,000 "heretics" in this way. Nor were the Protestant reformers of that time without guilty, a notable case being the burning near Geneva of Michael Servetus, because of his publicly declaring the truths that the Trinity doctrine and the baptism of infants are contrary to Bible teaching.

John Calvin, one of the founders of the Presbyterian Church, argued for the death penalty, and looked on while Servetus was literally roasted alive in a slow fire for about five hours till dead.

Sectarian Violence

Catholic-Protestant conflicts ravaged Europe. The Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) decimated Germany, while the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) saw England and France clash. These wars were often framed as holy struggles, deepening divisions.

The Protestant rebellion in the 16th century dislodged Roman Catholicism from power in many European lands.One result was the Thirty Years' War (1618 - 1648) "one of the most terrible wars in European history", according to The Universal History of the World.The basic cause of the war? "The hatred of Catholic for Protestant, of Protestant for Catholic".

Colonialism and Genocide

Spain's conquest of the Americas brought unprecedented destruction. Indigenous civilizations like the Aztecs and Incas were ravaged, millions killed, and cultures erased. The transatlantic slave trade, justified by some Christians, forcibly enslaved Africans, perpetuating racism.

Christendom had begun to expand beyond Europe, carrying "Christians" civilization into other parts of earth.This military expansion was marked by cruelty and greed.In the Americas, the Spanish conquistadors quickly destroyed the indigenous American civilizations.Noted one history book:"In general, the Spanish governors destroyed the native civilization, without introducing the European.The thirst for gold was the principle motive that drew them to the New World".

Protestant missionaries also went out from Europe to other continents. One of the results of their work was the promotion of colonial expansion.A widespread view today of the Protestant missionary effort is:"In many instances the missionary enterprise has been used as a justification and a cover for the domination of people.The interrelation between mission, technology, and imperialism is well known".

Modern Atrocities

Christendom's role in World War I and II is complex. Nationalism and ideology intertwined with religion, as Christian leaders and laity supported conflicting sides. The Holocaust, while rooted in Nazi ideology, saw complicity and silence from some Christian quarters.

The close association between Christendom's religions and the state has continued down to our day.The last two world wars were fought primarily between "Christian nations. Clergymen on both sides encouraged their young men to fight and try to kill the enemy who often belonged to the same religion.As was noted in the book If the Churches Want Peace: "Certainly it is no credit to the churches that war system of today grew up and has worked it's greatest havoc among states devoted to the cause of Christianity ".

It’s estimated that there could be as many as 2 trillion galaxies hurling through the creation. Trillion. And counting. Each galaxy has an average of about 100 billion stars. One hundred billion multiplied by 2 trillion add up to a lot of stars. And astronomers are now discovering what they call “exoplanets.” These are planets that orbit their stars the way the planets in our solar system do the sun, our star.

According to NASA, about 4,000 exoplanets have been discovered.That’s all that they can see, at least for now. If the number of exoplanets is anywhere near the number of stars, or galaxies even (that is, only one exoplanet per galaxy?) the universe is filled with more planets than we can imagine.

Which means what?

That the odds are that we are not alone in the universe, and that other life exists in the creation. There’s even an organization, first started by NASA, called SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, dedicated to discovering life in another part of the creation besides earth.

Wow! This is an insight that SETI, so far, hasn’t come close to uncovering. The text talks about “our struggle.” Against whom? The

spiritual forces of evil in the heavens, that’s whom. The implications of this verse, along with the others, are stunning. Not only does other life in the universe exist, but some of it is evil. And that evil is working against us on earth.

Another biblical text: “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him” (Colossians 1:16, NIV).

Here the Bible is talking about Jesus as the Creator of all things (see John 1:1-3) in both the heavens and the earth, “visible and invisible,” including “thrones or powers or rulers or authorities.”
