Every first Sunday of each month you can enjoy Los Descontrolados, a free Murga show in the street, in front of the Circuito Cultural Barracas, in the neighborhood of Barracas. Neighbors participate acting, dancing and singing in this typical form of expression of the Río de la Plata carnival. You can go with the kids but if it rains, forget about the event. Just in case, check the schedule with them. 2165 Iriarte Ave.

Cada primer domingo de cada mes, pueden disfrutar del show de murga de Los Descontrolados de Barracas, que se realiza en la calle, frente al Circuito Cultural Barracas, en la Av. Iriarte 2165. Vecinos bailan, cantan y actúan en esta típica forma de expresión del carnaval Rioplatense. Pueden ir con los chicos, pero se suspende por lluvia. Chequeen la agenda con ellos, por las dudas.

It’s been a while since my last post. I haven’t been writing for Trendy Palermo Viejo either until recently. But I have been taking lots of pictures so I’ll be posting again about different subjects.
To begin with, let me share with you a weird event I’ve been to yesterday.
The occasion was the Buenos Aires Zombie Walk which is organized every year in many cities of the world.
It was fun participating as a photographer. The situation was pretty bizarre. Imagine characters like the ones from the Michael Jackson’s video clip “Thriller” walking through the streets of Buenos Aires. Yes, there were dozens of young people dressed and wearing make up (some were really professional) as zombies walking from the San Martín Square to the obelisk, along Florida and Lavalle Streets, scaring people who passed by or making them laugh. Even more bizarre was the bunch of photographers (including me) walking with them and having fun while we took their pictures. Here’s the result. It was definitely a different afternoon in BA for tourists who stumbled upon the zombies. Ah, if you see blood on the floor, from Plaza San Martín, Florida, Lavalle or near the obelisk, don’t get worried. It’s just some tomato juice or strawberry jam.

Pasó bastante tiempo desde mi último post. Tampoco estuve escribiendo en Trendy Palermo Viejo hasta recientemente. Pero estuve sacando muchas fotos así que ahora estaré posteando sobre diferentes temas.
Para empezar, déjenme compartir con Uds. un evento un tanto extraño del cual participé ayer como fotógrafa. Se realizó el Buenos Aires Zombie Walk, que se organiza desde hace varios años en muchas ciudades del mundo. Fue muy divertido y bizarro. Imagínense encontrarse con personajes salidos del video clip de Michael Jackson “Thriller”, deambulando por las calles de Bs.As. Eran decenas de jóvenes disfrazados y maquillados (algunos muy profesionales) como zombies caminando por la calle, desde plaza San Martín, pasando por Florida y Lavalle hasta el obelisco, y asustando a la gente que pasaba o haciéndola reír. Más bizarro aún fue ver a los fotógrafos (yo incluida) caminando con ellos y divirtiéndonos mientras les sacábamos fotos. Aquí está el resultado. Fue sin dudas una tarde diferente para los turistas que paseaban por el microcentro porteño ayer. Ah, si ven rastros de sangre por la zona, no se preocupen, es sólo mermelada de frutilla o jugo de tomate.

Fom Retiro, take the TBA Line Retiro - Tigre until the last station. Cross Cazón Ave. and walk along the Luján River. It’s a beautiful promenade but a long walk so, be prepared (take comfortable shoes and sun protection).

Temaikén is a zoo park located in Escobar, one hour and a half from Buenos Aires. You can get there with the bus number 60, which departs from La Rural (Santa Fe Ave. and Sarmiento) and takes you directly to the entrance of the park. Plan to spend the entire day there, so take some sun block and extra batteries for your camera. What did I enjoy the most? Observing the bats, the suricatas, the aquarium and walking among butterflies.

Temaikén es un zoológico ubicado en Escobar, a una hora y media de Buenos Aires. Pueden llegar allí con el colectivo 60 que parte desde La Rural (Av. Santa Fe y Sarmiento) y los deja en la entrada del parque. Planeen pasar todo el día allí, así que les recomiendo llevar protector solar y baterías extra para la cámara. Lo que más me gustó fue observar a los murciélagos, a las suricatas, el acuario y caminar entre mariposas.

Last week I went the opening of two excellent art exhibitions at the Centro Cultural Recoleta.
One is Ariel Mlynarzewicz’s “Los Lugares de la Pintura”, where you can see pure passion on each of the artist’s brush stroke, as he said in a recent interview: “mi pintura es fundamentalmente emocional” (“my painting is basically emotional”).

And the other one is Eduardo Capilla’s “…………”. The title of the exhibition is exactly what I felt when I first saw it. My first sensation was rejection, but after a few minutes I discovered beauty in a black on black painting and finally, a sensational artist in an unexpected group of artworks.

La semana pasada fui a la inauguración de dos muestras en el Centro Cultural Recoleta. Una es “Los Lugares de la Pintura”, de Ariel Mlynarzewicz, donde podemos ver pura pasión en cada una de las pinceladas del artista, quien dijo en una reciente entrevista: “mi pintura es fundamentalmente emocional”. Se nota. La otra es la muestra de Eduardo Capilla y se llama “…………”. Eso fue exactamente lo que sentí al verla. Mi primera sensación fue de rechazo, pero luego de unos minutos, descubrí belleza en un cuadro pintado de negro y, finalmente, a un pintor sensacional detrás de un grupo inesperado de obras. Fue una verdadera sorpresa.

Palermo Woods is an oasis of beautiful greenery in the city that keeps adding concrete. It is the lung of Buenos Aires and a great spot for running, walking, cycling, exercising or simply relaxing. It usually gets crowded on weekends. I particularly like it during the week, where you can enjoy it in silence and feel connected to nature. These photos were taken the past Thursday morning at the Regatas Lake. Click here to see the map.

Los Bosques de Palermo son el oasis de la ciudad que continúa sembrando cemento. Son los pulmones de Buenos Aires y el lugar perfecto para ir a correr, caminar, andar en bici, hacer ejercicio, o simplemente relajarse. Generalmente se llena de gente durante los fines de semana. A mi me gusta especialmente durante la semana, cuando uno puede disfrutar del lugar en silencio y conectarse con la naturaleza. Last Sunday I went to Chinatown, in Belgrano. I haven’t been there for two years. 2009 is the year of the Ox, according to the Chinese calendar, and this time the celebration was better organized than two years ago. There were more porteños and street vendors than ever, along Arribeños St. between Blanco Encalada & Juramento. You could get lots of typical flavors such as spring rolls, red iced teas and colorful ornaments. I had the chance to see the rehearsal of the dragon’s parade, performed by... porteños. I also visited the Buddhist Temple Chong Kuan, located on Montañeses 2175. It’s always an interesting experience.

El domingo pasado fui al Barrio Chino en Belgrano. Hacía dos años que no iba. 2009 es el año del Buey de Fuego según el calendario chino y esta vez, los festejos fueron más organizados que hace dos años. Había muchos más porteños y vendedores que otras veces, a lo largo de la calle Arribeños, entre Blanco Encalada y Juramento. Había para probar muchísimos sabores típicos, como arrolladitos primavera, té rojo frío y comprar coloridos adornos orientales. Pude ver el ensayo del desfile del dragón, llevado a cabo por…porteños. También visité el Templo Budista Chong Kuan en la calle Montañeses 2175. Es siempre una experiencia interesante.

My first impression of the new Puerto Madero was quiet negative. I haven’t been there in quiet a while and it shocked me a little bit. It looks completely different with all the new buildings. I returned there three times in less than two weeks, and now, I must admit, I’m starting to like it. I visited the new Fortabat art collection and simply loved it!!! It’s worth a visit! I also think the new riverside is great for roller-skating, biking or simply walking or having a coffee at any of the cafeterias.

You can start your tour at the west side and walk along the old red bricks docks until the Puente de la Mujer, then cross it and enjoy the east side until you reach the Fortabat museum. Or, you can start your tour visiting the art collection first. My suggestion: go there near the sunset, so you might see the area both during the day and night. It’s great for taking photos.

Mi primera impresión del nuevo Puerto Madero fue bastante negativa. Hacía tiempo que no iba allí y me chocó bastante ver las nuevas construcciones. Fui tres veces en las últimas dos semanas y ahora debo admitirlo, me está gustando. Visité la recientemente inaugurada colección de arte Fortabat y me encantó!!! Vale la pena visitarla.

También me está gustando la zona para ir a andar en rollers, bicicleta o simplemente sentarse a tomar un café en alguna de las confiterías.
Pueden empezar su recorrido por la zona oeste y caminar a lo largo de los antiguos docks de ladrillos rojos hasta el Puente de la Mujer. Pueden cruzarlo y volver por el lado de enfrente hasta llegar a la colección Fortabat. O al revés, empezar por ésta.
Sugerencia: si van cerca del atardecer, pueden ver la zona a la luz del día y de noche. Es bárbaro para sacar fotos.

A few days ago I was walking on Perú St., downtown, and noticed a group of musicians playing aboriginal music on the street. As my work is somehow related with the recovery of indigenous symbols and images, I found it very interesting and took a few photos of them. The group is called Hayllu Puras, they are from Ecuador (Otavalo) and you can hear a sample of their music on this video. This is one of the things that I love about Buenos Aires. You can always find something different to see, even if you haven't planned it. Happy holidays!

Hace unos días, estaba caminando por la calle Perú, en el microcentro, cuando observé un grupo tocando música aborigen. Como mi trabajo está relacionado de cierta forma con la recuperación de simbología e imágenes indígenas, me interesó verlos y escuchar su música. Les tomé algunas fotos. Se trata de un grupo llamado Hayllu Puras, son de Ecuador (Otavalo) y pueden escuchar una muestra de su música en este video. Ésta es una de las cosas que me encantan de Buenos Aires. Uno siempre encuentra algo diferente para ver, aún sin haberlo planificado. ¡Felices fiestas!

Last week there was a Festival of India here in Buenos Aires. I attended a dance exhibition which took place at the Avenida de Mayo & Perú St. last Sunday. It was so interesting to see different types of typical dances and listen to their music. Colors were so vibrant I couldn’t stop taking pictures. Here are a few of them. More info here.

La semana pasada fue el Festival de la India en Buenos Aires. Asistí al show de danzas típicas en el escenario que armaron en Av. De Mayo y Perú, el domingo pasado. Fue tan interesante ver los diferentes tipos de danzas tradicionales y escuchar su música. Los colores eran tan vibrantes y alegres que no pude resistir sacar muchísimas fotos. The Museum of Carlos Gardel is located in the Balvanera neighborhood (Jean Jaurés 735), in the house that Gardel bought in 1926 and where he used to live with his mother. Near the place, you’ll be able to enjoy many houses with their fronts painted with colorful fileteado porteño, tango lyrics and music, the Abasto Shopping Mall and a few theaters, like El Cubo and Teatro Ciego.

El Museo Casa Carlos Gardel está ubicado en el barrio Balvanera (Jean Jaurés 735), en la casa que Gardel compró en 1926 y donde vivió con su madre. En los alrededores del museo, podrán disfrutar de muchas otras casas con sus frentes pintados con el colorido fileteado porteño y letras o partituras de tangos, el Shopping Abasto y algunas salas teatrales, como El cubo y Teatro Ciego.

Last Sunday I visited the antiques fair at Plaza Dorrego, in San Telmo. November is a good month to visit it, since there is a costume and booth contest among vendors and the promenade is much more fun than usual. There were gauchos, pulperías, mermaids, a virgin from colonial times, a “porteña” Piaf, stands turned into “pizzerías” and many other original ideas and characters. The winner has the chance to choose the best location for his/her stand for the following months. Here are the photos I took last Sunday. You can still enjoy it tomorrow. El domingo pasado visité la feria de antigüedades de la Plaza Dorrego, en San Telmo. Noviembre es un buen mes para recorrerla ya que hay un concurso de disfraces y puestos entre los feriantes y el paseo es mucho más divertido que lo habitual. Hubo gauchos, pulperías, sirenas, una virgen de época colonial, una Piaf porteña, puestos convertidos en pizzerías y muchas otras ideas y personajes originales. El ganador tiene la posibilidad de elegir la mejor ubicación para su puesto para los meses siguientes. Aquí están las fotos que tomé este año. Aún pueden disfrutarlo mañana. Fotos del año pasado.

I’ve never noticed how patriotic (or something close to it) Argentineans are, until I started photographing my city. Every time I go out with my camera, I end up focusing some Argentina’s flags on a balcony, a terrace or a window. Now, I see the Argentine flag almost everywhere. I love my country despite all the problems that it has. However, I never thought about having a flag hanging from my window. What about you? Here are some of my favorite shots of the national flag.

No me había dado cuenta de lo patrióticos (o algo cercano a eso) que son los argentinos, hasta que empecé a tomar fotografías de mi ciudad. Cada vez que salgo con la cámara, termino enfocando algunas banderas colgadas en balcones, en terrazas o en alguna ventana. A partir de esa observación, empecé a ver banderas cada vez más seguido. Amo a mi país, a pesar de los problemas que tiene. Sin embargo, nunca pensé en colgar una bandera de mi ventana. ¿Y Uds.? Aquí están algunas de mis tomas favoritas de la bandera argentina.

Last Saturday, the widest avenue of the world became a Formula One car circuit. Scottish F1 driver David Coulthard raced on the 9 de Julio Avenue in front of 80,000 fans who attended the free show. Although I’m not a F1 fan, it was a good opportunity to see this beautiful avenue with an unusual scene. More info here.

El sábado pasado, la avenida más ancha del mundo se convirtió en un circuito de Fórmula Uno. El corredor escocés David Coulthard hizo una exhibición gratuita de F1 en la avenida 9 de Julio frente a 80.000 fans. Aunque a mi no me interesa la F1, fue una buena oportunidad para ver esta hermosa avenida transformada en un escenario atípico. Más info aquí.

Esquina Homero Manzi

Boedo is a nostalgic neighborhood. At the corner of San Juan & Boedo Avenues, the restaurant Esquina Homero Manzi offers tango shows and reminds us of the poet Homero Manzi who used to write the lyrics of the tango Sur in one of those tables in 1948, when the place was called Cannadian. José González Castillo, Roberto Arlt, Alfredo Palacios and other tango men, poets, soccer fans and politicians were habitués in this corner.

Boedo es un barrio nostálgico. En la esquina de las avenidas Boedo y San Juan, el restaurante Esquina Homero Manzi ofrece shows de tango y nos recuerda al poeta Homero Manzi, quien, según dicen, escribió los versos del tango Sur en una de esas mesas, cuando el lugar se llamaba Cannadian, en 1948. La esquina era hábitat natural de personalidades como José González Castillo, Roberto Arlt, Alfredo Palacios, además de tangueros, poetas, fanáticos de fútbol y dirigentes políticos.

Almacén Los Principios - San Antonio de Areco

This old-time grocery store in San Antonio de Areco (see previous post) was used as a location for a TV spot for Knorr soups a few years ago, and some habitués participated as actors. If you visit the place, you might have the chance of talking to Antonio, the son of Don Fernández (who founded this pulpería in 1922). Avoid going during “siesta” time.

Este almacén antiguo de San Antonio de Areco (ver post previo) fue utilizado como set de filmación de un comercial para TV de caldos Knorr hace unos años, con habitués participando como actores. Si visitan el lugar, pueden encontrar a Antonio, el hijo de Don Fernández (quien fundó esta pulpería en 1922) y charlar con él. Eviten pasar en el horario de la siesta.
