Felted Mini Catch-All With Blossom

Fill with candy for a quick gift or use as a pretty catch-all for your kitchen or desk. Cover a flower pot or insert a small bud vase with flowers. Baskets can be lined with a simple tube made from cardstock (see instructions) to help keep the shape when filled. Includes directions for felting by hand. Can be machine felted if desired.

Materials & Supplies
Patons Classic Wool Merino Yarn or any similar 100% Wool yarn:
1 ounce Main color (MC)
1 ounce Contrasting color (CC)
1 ounce Leaf Green
Small amounts pink and red or your choice of flower colors
Small amount yellow for flower centers
Crochet Hook Size G
Yarn needle
2 medium size bowls
laundry detergent
Drinking glass with approx. 2-1/2” diameter bottom
Rubber gloves (optional)
2-1/2” by 2-1/2” piece of light cardboard (optional)
paper or cardstock for liner (optional)

Finished Size about 4 inches tall.

Work in rounds. Do not join. When changing colors or fastening off simply tie knots. Do not work over the ends. After felting you can trim off the ends as the felted pieces will not unravel. Work loosely. Gauge is unimportant.

Catch-All Basket

Ch 2 with MC
Rnd 1: 6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 3: (sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc)6 times. (18 sc)

Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc)6 times. (24 sc)

Repeat from * 4 times MORE. (5 petals).
Fasten off.

Rnd 4: Working behind petals in back loops from last round,
Join leaf green in any back loop,
Sc in same loop,
*sc in next loop, ch 1,
(2 dc, 1 trc, 2 dc) in next loop,
ch 1, sc in next loop,
Repeat from * 4 times MORE. ( 5 leaves).
Fasten off.

With yellow, ch 7,
3 sc in second chain from hook,
3 sc in each of remaining 5 chains. (18 sc).
Fasten off leaving about 6” of yarn.

Pull the yarn tail through the flower center from front to back using your hook.
Secure in back. Flower center should curl into a small spiral.

Felting and Finishing

Work in or near a sink so you have easy access to hot and cold water. Fill one bowl with very cold water. Fill the other bowl with very hot water. For quickest felting make the water as hot as comfortable to work in with your rubber gloves on. Add a few drops of laundry detergent to the hot water bowl.
*Place the crocheted catch-all in the hot water for about 3 minutes. Agitate the piece in the water with a spoon. Take it out and rub it and roll it between both hands. Squeeze out the water with your hand and place the piece in the cold water, swishing it around for a few minutes.
Repeat from the * several times. Change the water as needed to maintain the hot and cold temps. Check your results as you go. Eventually the piece will look fuzzy, the individual stitches will blur and the piece will shrink.
Rinse in fresh cold water and squeeze out as much water as possible. Don’t twist or wring it. Turn the glass upside down and slide the piece over it. Shape the round bottom and make sure the handles appear even. Set aside until completely dry.
Repeat the felting process with the blossom. After rinsing, shape each petal carefully with your fingers. Curl the center into a spiral. Allow to dry.

Clip off all loose ends close to the blossom and basket. Sew the blossom to the catch-all with green yarn or sewing thread.

You can line the basket if desired to help keep the shape when filled. Trace the bottom of the basket on light cardboard. Cut out 1/8” inside the line and place in the bottom.
Cut a piece of cardstock (or 2 sheets of printer paper held together) to 8-1/2” by 3”. Roll into a tube overlapping the ends about ½”. Glue or tape in place and insert into catch-all basket.

Free Shamrock Doily Crochet Pattern

There are now 15 boxes of crochet forming the bottom row of the chart. Complete the motif working from the chart. The first row is worked left to right, the next row is worked right to left and so on. Ch 5 and TURN at the end of each row. Each open box on the chart = ch 2, skip 2 sts, dc in next st. Each shaded box on the chart = dc in nexr 3 sts. When you complete all rows fasten off and weave in ends with the yarn needle.

Make the following parts and set aside for assembly at the end.

Graham Crackers

Make 4 with Light Brown and G hook
Row 1: Ch 11,
Sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch.
Ch 1, Turn. (10 sc)

Row 2: sc in first sc,
(Ch 2, skip 2 sc,
Sc in next sc) 3 times.
Ch 1, Turn. (4 sc + 3 ch-2 spaces)

Row 3: sc in first sc,
(2 sc in ch-2 space,
sc in next sc) 3 times. (10 sc)

Row 4-9: (Repeat Rows 2 and 3)
3 times. (10 sc)

Fasten off.

Adult Marshmallow

Make 2 with White and G hook

Rnd 1: Ch 2,
6 sc in second ch from hook. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Rnd 3: (sc in next sc,
2 sc in next sc) repeat around.
(18 sc)

Rnd 4: (sc in next 2 sc,
2 sc in next sc) repeat around.
(24 sc)

Rnd 5-6: sc in each sc around.
(24 sc)

Rnd 7: (sc in next 2 sc,
Sc next 2 sc together) repeat around. (18 sc)

Rnd 8: (sc in next sc,
Sc next 2 sc together) repeat around. (12 sc)

Stuff with polyfill.

Rnd 9: (sc next 2 sc together)
Repeat around. (6 sc)

Fasten off leaving 12” for sewing.
Sew in and out of the last 6 sts. Pull tightly to gather. Secure and fasten off.

Chocolate

Make 2 with dark brown and G hook

Square 1

Row 1: Ch 7,
Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, Turn (6 sc)

Row 2-6: sc in each sc across.
Ch 1, turn. (6 sc)
At end of Row 6, do not ch-1.
Fasten off.

Square 2

Repeat Row 1 through Row 6 of Square 1. Do Not fasten off.

Rnd 7: Hold both squares together and sc around all 4 edges working through both layers. Make 3 sc in each corner.

Fasten off.

Legs

Make 2 for girl and 2 for boy
with G hook
Begin at shoe with black:

Ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
(6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Rnd 3: Working in Back Loops only,
(sc next 2 sc together) twice,
sc in next 8 sc. (10 sc)

Change to white

Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around.
(10 sc)

Change to peach for a girl or
Change to Light Brown for a boy

Rnd 5-7: Sc in each sc around.
(10 sc)

Fasten off

Arms

Make 4 with peach and G hook

Rnd 1: Ch 2,
6 sc in second ch from hook.
(6 sc)

Rnd 2-5: Sc in each sc around.
(6 sc)
Fasten off.

Ladies Hat

With hot pink and F hook

Ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
(6 sc)
Rnd 2-5: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Rnd 6: sl st in first sc,
Ch 2 (counts as a hdc)
Hdc in same sc,
2 hdc in each sc around.
Join with sl st in top of ch 2.
Fasten off. (24 hdc)

Hat band:
With neon green and F hook
Ch 16 and fasten off. Sew chain around the base of the hat.

Purse

With hot pink and F hook

Ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
(6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Rnd 3: sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Change to neon green

Rnd 4: sc next 2 sc together around.
(6 sc)

Rnd 5: sl st in first sc,
Ch 5, skip 3 sc,
Sl st in next sc forming purse handle.
Fasten off.

Bow Tie

With neon green and F hook

Chain 5,
*Sl st in fifth ch from hook,
Repeat from *.
Fasten off.

Toasted Marshmallows

Make 3 with G hook .
Begin with white

Ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
(6 sc)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Rnd 3: Working in Back Loop only
Sc in each sc around. (12 sc)

Rnd 4-6: Sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Change to Light Brown

Rnd 7: sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Stuff marshmallow.

Rnd 8: Working in Back Loop only
Sc next 2 sc together around.
(6 sc)

Fasten off leaving 12” for sewing.
Sew in and out of last 6 sts.
Pull tightly to gather and secure.
Fasten off.

Hair Bow

With hot pink and F hook

Chain 5,
*Sl st in fifth ch from hook,
Repeat from *.
Fasten off.

Baseball Caps

Make one with neon green
and one with yellow.
Use F hook

Ch 2. Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
(6 sc)
Rnd 2-4: 2 sc in each sc around.
(12 sc)

Rnd 5: Working in Front Loop only
Sc in first sc,
2 hdc in next sc,
2 dc in next sc,
2 hdc in next sc,
sc in next sc,
sl st in next sc.
Fasten off leaving remaining sts of round unworked.

Finishing/Assembly

Make a stack with 1 graham cracker, chocolate, adult marshmallow, graham cracker.
Sew through the center of the stack several times with light brown yarn and the yarn needle. Fasten off.
Make another stack the same way.

Stuff the arms and legs. Center the legs under the bottom of each stack and sew in place to the bottom graham cracker.

Sew the arms to the stacks in between the bottom cracker and the chocolate.

Sew the hat to the top of the top graham cracker on the girl stack. Sew the purse to the end of one arm.
Sew the bow tie to the chocolate layer on the boy stack.
Glue wiggle eyes to all five marshmallows.
Embroider U-shaped mouths on all of the marshmallows.
Sew the hairbow to one toasted marshmallow.
Sew the baseball caps to the two remaining toasted marshmallows.
Slide the toasted marshmallows on the skewer.

Free Felted Crochet Heart Garland Pattern

Use this Heart Garland for Valentine’s Day decorating. Instructions are included for felting the hearts by hand. If you prefer, the hearts can be felted in a washing machine.

This is an easy project even if you've never tried felting before. The heart motifs are crocheted using 100% wool yarn. Then a hot water soak and a little rubbing causes the pieces to turn into a felt-like fabric. See the complete directions at the end of the crochet pattern below.

Stitch the felted hearts together with red bead spacers for a small garland. Then you're ready to decorate a stuffed dog, your real dog, or trim a basket or door wreath.

Materials
Patons Classic Wool Merino Yarn 1 skein – Bright Red
(or any medium weight 100% wool)
Crochet Hook size G
6 Red beads- approx. 8mm
Red sewing thread
Sewing needle
2 medium size bowls
Few drops dish detergent
Rubber gloves

Heart Motif
Make 6 with red wool yarn

Row 1: Ch 2 (1st hdc),
2 hdc in second ch from hook. ( 3 hdc)

Row 2: Ch 2 (1st hdc) Turn,
Hdc in same stitch,
Hdc in next hdc,
2 hdc in last hdc. ( 5 hdc)

Row 3: Ch 2 (1st hdc) Turn,
Hdc in same stitch,
Hdc in next 3 hdc,
2 hdc in last hdc. ( 7 hdc)

Row 4: Ch 2 (1st hdc) Turn,
Hdc in same stitch,
Hdc in next 5 hdc,
2 hdc in last hdc. ( 9 hdc)

Row 5: Ch 1, Turn,
Skip first 2 hdc,
5 dc in next hdc,
skip next hdc,
slip stitch in hdc,
skip next hdc,
5 dc in next hdc,
skip next hdc,
slip stitich in last hdc. (2 Five-dc clusters)
Fasten off.

Felting
Felting the heart motifs will make them smaller and fuzzier. The individual stitches will begin to disappear and the heart will look like felt.

Work in or near a sink so you have easy access to hot and cold water. Fill one bowl with very cold water. Fill the other bowl with very hot water. For quickest felting make the water as hot as comfortable to work in with your rubber gloves on. Add a few drops of detergent to the hot water bowl.
*Place the crocheted heart in the hot water for about 3 minutes. Agitate the piece in the water with a spoon. Take it out and rub it and roll it between both hands. Squeeze out the water and place the piece in the cold water, swishing it around for a few minutes.
Repeat from the * several times. Change the water as needed to maintain the hot and cold temps. Check your results as you go. Eventually the piece will look fuzzy, the individual stitches will blur and the piece will shrink.
Rinse in fresh cold water and squeeze out as much water as possible. Don’t twist or wring it. Pull the heart into shape with your fingers and set aside until completely dry.
Repeat with the other 5 hearts.

Finishing
With needle attach red sewing thread to the side of a heart. * Thread on a bead, attach thread to the side of the next heart. Go through the width of the heart, hiding the thread on the inside. Repeat from * until all heart and beads are attached. Join thread to opposite side of 1st heart to form a ring. Secure and fasten off.

Felted Purses....Last Minute Gifts

At the last minute I decided I needed something special in which to "wrap" my nieces' Christmas Gift Cards. I found a free pattern for these little felted purses here at the Lion Brand Yarn website. (You'll need to register for free).

Then I embellished the purses with felted flowers made from 2 patterns. The pink flower pattern is free and can be found here. The red rose is from a set of patterns I purchased from an Etsy Shop here.

The pattern gave directions for felting by washing machine but I did it by hand in a small bowl. This was my first attempt at felting and I loved it! Try it if you need a quick gift or get started now for Valentine's Day.
