Hey all, I am still alive!

I’ve been away from the mini scene for several years due to some relocation, new jobs, and starting up grad school again. I think it was a good time to take a break at that time due to burn out as well. So a lot of real life has been deterring me from my mini life and now I am sort of refreshed and missing the scene. There are really no projects in progress at the moment, though I do want to make some more kits and finish up some pending projects eventually (you know, like the Nyne or the Hello.Shawn). Right now, I am just easing my way back into blogging and hope to maintain it somewhat… at least once a month gosh darnit!

You might have noticed some minor changes to the blog… or maybe not, I’ve kind of forgotten everything myself. But I am moving to a new WPtheme, which means re-visiting a lot of the old posts so I can edit it to fit the theme (notice the missing photos), so please be patient while I try to get things back into working order… starting right at the very first post! Hello Miniature World! Ahhh… a trip down memory lane.

In the meantime, feel free to drop me some links of the things I’ve missed! I would love to check it out and possibly feature them here. Or pin them up on Pinterest! (which reminds me, I need to do something with that account…)

P.S. The image is an old one from the Coventry Cottage heyday.

This is another one of those entries I’ve been meaning to write and post up ASAP as it was happening, but you know, life. It’s going to be a long and full of text. You were warned.

Tough Decisions

You may or may not have noticed that I am no longer shipping internationally. It was a hard decision to make, but it had to be done.

Here’s the how and why. It started with losing 3 consecutive international orders shipped at the end of Feb-early April with a retail value totaling almost $400. These problems came to light during tax time as I was going through my bookkeeping for the year and was quickly realizing that things were not going as well as I thought it was. So the loss was just the icing on the cake.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not living some glamorous life making crazy monies from miniatures. In the 2+ years having my mini-business, I have not once paid myself. Any money I make goes right back in to buy inventory, supplies, and equipment, à la bootstrapping as a form of capital building. At the end of the year, it breaks even (loss in 2010, tiny profit in 2011, possibly another tiny profit in 2012, but no thanks to the $400 loss). At this rate, I won’t be paying myself any time this decade and I am OK with it.

Now that you know of my lack of monetary gain from the business, you may wonder why I work an additional 25+ hours a week on top of my day job on miniatures for basically nothing. It is because of the intangible rewards like the satisfaction and joy of creating minis and being able to connect with and make friends with the lovely people in the mini community. So when things like this happen or when I start losing all sorts of packages (which translate into losing $$), that it makes it really hard for me to even care anymore.

There were a few times I was close to throwing in the towel and move to other less stressful interests, but it.. is.. so.. HARD to let go. This thing is like a child to me. I can’t abandon it. I want to keep caring about it, nurturing it, and growing it.

I realized that in order for me to keep it going, it needs to stress me out a whole lot less, and the easiest solution was to stop offering international shipping. There is just too much risk (more on this later) in shipping internationally. I know I have some fans in the rest of the world and I am sincerely very sorry for disappointing you.

On the plus side, this opens up opportunities for international retailers looking to carry Amazing Miniatures as there will be no competition from me. I will be expanding the wholesale section soon enough. If you are an international dollhouse miniature retailer interested, let me know.

Risky Business (with PayPal)

Did you know I used to work in a credit card processing company in a previous life? While I only worked in the marketing department, I still learned a whole lot about how the industry works. Without boring you to tears, let me give you a very simplified explanation of it.

Businesses need a merchant account in order to accept credit cards as payments. This merchant account is essentially a line of credit given to the business from the bank on behalf of the customer who is paying with a credit card. This line of credit is what takes the risk out of the seller’s hands and places it on the banks’. So if the buyer says they never received a package, but the seller is able to prove to the bank that the package was sent, guess who takes the hit? The bank does. That’s why they charge fees to businesses in case these things happen (and to make money, obviously). Again, this is a super simplified explanation.

Now enter PayPal. PayPal does not offer merchant accounts as a part of their regular services. I am assuming they work with an existing bank with their merchant accounts (it’s the law), so you have to go through an approval process in order to get one. This process means you can be denied a merchant account, because banks don’t want to give you one if your business is too risky (gambling sites, porn, etc.). So unless it explicitly says that it is a merchant account, the PayPal accounts are NOT merchant accounts and risks abound for everyone.

When a transaction happens on PayPal, what they do is essentially move the buyer’s money into the seller’s account. That’s it. There is no credit applied. They are just money movers. The risk is all on the buyer and seller and PayPal conveniently charge the seller similar fees as a credit card processor for not taking on any risk. Nice of them, eh?

Granted, they now have some modicum of buyer/seller protection based on the shipping/tracking thing, but there are stupidly easy ways to bypass that and totally screw the buy or seller (depending who you are in the transaction) and I’m not going to tell you how.

The whole point of this is that as a seller shipping internationally, the risk is all on me. Depending on certain variables (again, not telling you specifics), all a shady buyer has to do is say they never received their package and bam! I lose. But I’m quite certain my buyers aren’t shady (more on this later).

So why don’t I just get a merchant account? I did the math and based on my lower sales volume, it would cost me more to have a merchant account than it would to cover the costs of lost packages. Well, until the recent snafu, but only just.

Now after the fact, I’m still not going to go for a merchant account because my volume still does not justify the cost. It will only make sense once I start selling face to face as opposed to explicitly online, but who knows when that will be?

So the easiest solution to limit risk is to offer domestic shipping only.

Speaking of which..

Shipping Woes (with the USPS)

I mentioned above that I sincerely believe that my lost international packages are just that: lost. Maybe I’m just a gullible schmuck, but I refuse to believe that my buyers are intentionally dishonest people.

One of the big reasons that support my assertion is due to the recent news on the United States Postal Service (USPS).

There have been office closings, reconsolidation, layoffs, and otherwise general upheaval of our mail services. With all this confusion going on, some of my international packages are getting lost (2 arrived OK before I decided to stop shipping internationally) and my first class domestic packages are taking an extra 1-3 days to arrive to its destination. The same thing may be happening to your packages (feel free to join the discussion).

Warning: I’m going to get a bit political here. Go read something else if you are sensitive to such things.

Now the libertarians or the right wing conservatives would smugly point out that the USPS is a government institution and that it is too big, too mismanaged, too inefficient to work; that it is a waste of tax payer’s money; that FedEx or UPS might as well take over. But I tell them: You are wrong.

But the problems with the USPS are not about management or poor demand. It is a manufactured problem that began in 2006 when Representative Tom Davis (R – VA) introduced H.R. 6407, the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act. This legislation forced the USPS to fund its pension program 75 years into the FUTURE within a 10 year period, something that up until that point was completely unheard of, and has put huge financial strains on the USPS as a result.

The legislation was an attempt to financially break the USPS and force it into privatization, brought to you by the lobbying efforts of FedEx and UPS and right wing ideologues who don’t believe in any form of public sector service. Without the ridiculous pension funding mandate, the USPS would have made a $611 million profit.

http://www.nalc.org/postal/reform/index.html

Other than lost or delayed packages, how does this legislation pertain to me? If you are a small seller, how does it pertain to you?

Last I checked, it cost twice as much as USPS to ship the same package with FedEx or UPS. Why? Because I’m not a huge company and I don’t have the economies of scale on my side so I am charged more by these private companies. They have to make a profit after all. You think my customers would be OK with a higher overall cost of my products? Most won’t. They may not be able to even afford it. You think the smaller sellers like me would survive if we had only FedEx or UPS to rely on? Not many will. We rely on the USPS.

For those politicians harping on about helping the small businesses, they do a pretty good job screwing the little guys when they need to suck up to the big companies.

I don’t know what’s going to happen to the USPS, but I have a pretty good idea of what would happen to me and most people trying to make a living on Etsy, Ebay, or as an independent online seller if USPS folds. It is not a good thing.

I don’t know if there’s anything being done to fix this. The only thing I can think of is to support the National Association of Letter Carriers. If you know of something going on, do chime in. As for now, I’ll just have to be happy with the fact that more people are aware.

And then

OK, I’m done complaining about shipping.

Greenleaf’s Sixth Annual Spring Fling Contest

Greenleaf’s new shell kit for this contest has a simple, but unique looking design. It reminds me of a small tin cabin in the woods. The big surprise to me is how affordable it is, starting at a discounted price of $18.95 with free shipping (don’t forget to use the coupon code). The price and the smaller size makes it much more accessible to so many more miniaturists to join in on the fun. They also have very affordable addons for even more inspiration and fun.

As usual, Greenleaf is offering rather sweet prizes, including getting to name the kit!

First Place: $500 gift card from the Greenleaf Company Store plus you rename this dollhouse

Second Place: $250 gift card from the Greenleaf Company Store

Third Place: $125 gift card from the Greenleaf Company Store

Luck of the Draw: A random entry will win a $50 gift card from the Greenleaf Company Store

Deadline is September 3, 2012. Do check out their contest page for more information.

The Dolls’ House Emporium Creative Competition 2012

And this year, the base model is the Corner Shop (see links below to purchase), which they say doesn’t have to be turned into a shop, but just looking at it really makes me want to! However, I do think it has the right lines for a rather swanky modern pad too, dontcha think? It also has addons that you can purchase as well. And lucky for the US folks, DHE had expanded with a warehouse in the US, so that makes it a bit more affordable for us.

A single floor base kit costs $96 with free shipping. It costs $165 for both floors. Purchase here:

First Floor Shop (UK, US)

Second Floor Shop (UK, US)

First and Second Floor (UK, US)

Here are the tid bits on the prizes:

1st Prize: A Dolls House Emporium kit of your choice worth up to $867

2nd Prize: $467 of Dolls House Emporium Vouchers

3rd Prize: $267 of Dolls House Emporium Vouchers

Deadline is August 31st, 2012. See the contest page for more details.

Miniatures.com 19th Annual Creatin’ Contest

This year’s kit makes me so super excited because it is all about modern with the MiniTown Loft Shell Kit at a very affordable $29.99. I was given a tantalizing hint about this kit as it was being developed (*wink*wink*), but had no clue it was for the contest itself. Very exciting!
Minismodernas is one of our official international retailers and they’re having a nifty scene competition to celebrate their 1 year anniversary! Here the info with the important parts bolded:

We know that it’s difficult to start and more if we start in a new world, little by little creating love for a new style, but with your help all is easiest, although we have still a long way.

And we would like to celebrate with you: you are invited to participate in a scene competition, modern scenes, of course, in any style: shabby, minimal, urban chic… just as scenes of home or works: hairdresser’s, offices… but always in contemporary style.

The photos must be posted in the Minismodernas Facebook or sent to rosa@minismodernas.es and will be published in the blog and in facebook.
Am I Missing Anything? And an Update..

If you know of other companies or retail shops running contests, please let me know and I’ll be sure to include it here for everyone. If you plan on joining any of these contests and have a blog or a flickr tracking it, feel free to post it in the comments! I’d love to follow your progress because…

I won’t be participating in any of these contests. I need to live vicariously through you!

Though the various submission dates seem so far away, time simply does not permit for me. There is too much life stuff going on (new job, apartment hunting, impending move, a bazillion weddings to attend, and a nasty back injury) that I can’t jump into a new project in good conscience. But based on how affordable and interesting the kits are, I may end up buying one or two for future use… Or not, because I am sitting on top of 5 different kits/builds in various states of progress. I should finish one before taking on another one.

Hmmm… I think this is a good rule for me and I should follow it. Otherwise, in a few years, you’d probably see me on an episode of Hoarders in a sea of dollhouses!

I meant to post this on March 3rd, for Girl’s Day, a Japanese celebration called Hinamatsuri.

Isn’t that just wonderful? A national holiday devoted to displaying and celebrating these gorgeous dolls and its history. As a kiddie, I’ve seen these dolls displayed in museums and have always wanted one (or two, or three, or a whole army of them).

It’s nice that I finally have a set to call my own (miniatures do have its perks).

The set seems to be in 1:6? or even 1:10? Well, they’re dolls, so I guess I can say they’re very large dolls for 1:12.

I purchased this Re-Ment set via Amazon a while back. I don’t quite remember how much I paid for them, but I think it was less than $15 with free shipping. Unfortunately, the thing with Re-Ment is that they only make a limited amount of most of their sets and after the batches are sold out, that’s it. This set was the second version of the Hina dolls and I snatched it up pretty quickly. While it’s no longer available on Amazon (can’t seem to find it), they’re still available on Ebay if you’re interested.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Re-Ment keeps coming out with new Hinamatsuri sets every few years. They’re pretty dang popular (and awesome).

If you’re wondering how much the legit, handmade 1:1 scale dolls (irony?) actually cost, a quick search on Amazon confirms that it costs several limbs and your first born child. I think I’m just going to be satisfied with the mini versions.

In other news, I’ve been neck deep in tax stuff (trying to sort out all the sales and inventory is a pain in the butt!), so I guess I’ll see you after April 15th if I survive…

After some user feedback and working on 3 different prototypes, I’ve settled on a more refined and easier to assemble version of the VIKAesque wood kit. In addition to an upgraded design, the whole thing is now cut entirely from Baltic Birch plywood (previous version was a hybrid of bamboo and birch) so there should be a greater level of consistency when painting or staining the material.

With the changes, the listing on Etsy has been updated with new eye candy and I’ve even posted up the kit assembly instructions for the VIKAesque too. It only took a year since it was first released, I know!

So with the updates out of the way, here’s just a quick tip on what you can do to snazz up the Vikaesque wood kit in one easy step. Just color it in with markers!

This idea was from the fabulous Fran on how she finished her kit by using a brown marker to simulate wood stains. So using only a green permanent marker (in honor of St. Paddy’s Day coming up!) I simply painted or “stained” the wood green.

Oh boy does it look purdy! And even better, there was no mess, no need for paint brushes, and it took me less than 30 seconds for each piece to color green. I was thinking about coloring all the pieces green, but decided against it after a quick dry fit. It just looks so much more interesting when the pieces are different colors.

I like that the birch looks like it’s almost glittering after the marker treatment!

So that’s it, that’s all it takes to make the kit unique and fit whatever color scheme you’re going for!

(P.S. I *heart* Fran for the idea!)

And just for fun: here’s the snapshot of my cheapo mini photo studio. Taking product photos are a pain in the butt, but after a few months from it, I find that I do miss it! I hope this sentiment keeps up.. I have a lot of pictures to take..

During the laser cut process, there may be some burnt patches or discolorations of the material from the soot. The burnt edges do have a certain aesthetic to it that some people may like and you are certainly welcomed to assemble it as is. Just keep in mind that the kit is meant to be stained or painted.

Also due to the nature of the laser cutting process, you may have to clean soot from the edges of the pieces. A very lightly damp towel will make quick work of the soot.

Some cleaning of the soot from the edges may be required.

After cleaning, you may want to paint or stain the pieces (here’s a quick tip on how you can stain the pieces with a marker!). I find it easier to do before assembly as it allows you to sand away any rough edges or paint/stain the various pieces different colors for a more unique look. If you prefer to paint or stain it after assembly, that’s fine too! Remember, there is no wrong way to do this!

Other than however you decide to finish the piece, the only other tool you will need is glue. In this demonstration, I am simply using white Elmer’s glue (mixed with a bit of wood glue).

NOTE: The type of adhesive is also dependant on how you finish it and when you finish it.

For example, if you gave the pieces a waterproof stain before assembly, wood glue might not create a strong enough bond, and you may need a water insoluble glue, like E-6000 glue.

In another example, if you plan on finishing the piece after assembly, then any good old wood glue will do, as you will be gluing unfinished wood pieces together.

STEP 2: With it glued, take the shelf connector piece and attach it to the trestle legs. I find it much easier to start at the bottom, with the shelf as it helps stabilize the leg.

If you notice glue oozing out, wipe it away quick!

NOTE 1: To apply pressure while the glue is setting, you can use a small clamp for each side of the bottom shelf or simply use tape. You can apply pressure to the top by laying something flat on top of the legs and wait for the glue to dry. (not shown, images to come)

NOTE 2: Although the pieces are fitted fairly well, it doesn’t hurt to square it up with a small carpenter’s square so that the legs are squared properly!

Let the glue dry for however long it is recommended by the manufacturer.

Oh boy, it’s been a while. Do you miss me? I sure miss everyone! I know my last few posts lacked any substance and I tried to get back into the rhythm for the holidays, but eventually decided to just take a break from miniatures and this blog for a bit. Hope you didn’t mind.

I’ve been telling friends that I’ll be back “soon” for months, but finally, here I am! Yes, I’m alive! I’m blogging! RAWR! It feels weird posting again – like that feeling when you revisit an old neighborhood you moved away from for several years. But I’m back in this neck of the woods for good. You can’t get rid of me.

I have quite a bit of images and content backed up for months, but I don’t want to be dedicating whole posts about the holidays months late, so I’m cramming everything in here.

Some pictures are late, some are quick updates, and some are sneak peeks of what’s to come.

During the holidays, I was sent a sweet little package from Lara as a thank you for winning and receiving one of my giveaways. Seriously, the miniatures community is full of awesome people like Lara. She didn’t have to, I never expected anything, but she did anyway. THANK YOU LARA!

Also during the holidays, my ElfDoll TinyDoll Kai came in the mail. I waited a good 6 months for her. Unfortunately, they messed up my order and that soured me to the doll itself. Other than the initial unboxing, she went right back in the box and sat there since. I have been mulling over whether or not to sell her (hence the lack of a name), but looking over the images now, there’s a possibility I make keep her. We’ll see.

A few days later, Charlemagne arrives! So cute! *head explodes*

Charlemagne is a FairyLand PukiPuki Lily. I had decided that “Lily” will be a boy and named him Charlemagne before he even arrived (I waited about 8 months for him!). This decision came from the fact that the Lily facemold looks great as a boy in the Caramel Mushroom Full Package (which I puchased), but unfortunately, Charlie came with too much blush on. It’s just a small complaint and nothing I can’t handle, so he’s definitely a keeper!

But you know what this means? Dakota now has a partner in crime! I feel really bad for Petunia…

Why hello there! Speaking of the devil, it’s Dakota.. in a dry fit Hello.Shawn! This was an exciting day for me. More to come about the H.S house.

And if you’re wondering about the H.S for the I Am a Giant thing… no, I didn’t have time to work on it, let alone finish it. *glum*

Remember the Nyne House from (what feels like) ages ago? Well, something is happening to it. To be honest, it’s not much, but it’s something!

And lastly the RC Bookcases are back and I’m getting ready for a little sale…

So that’s what happened betwixt and between October until now. There are some other undocumented projects and tutorials being worked on. Hoping to blog more soon!

Well, October has been a busy month on the treasury circuit. I was featured in 41 public treasuries. That certainly beat out my personal best (the total escapes me right now, but it was in the low 20s). And if I removed the totals for all the cardstock deer treasury features, I still come out on top of my old record, so it that’s something. Anywho, go check them out!
