Pakistan: A Developing Next 11 Economy

2013-07-28T20:57:00.000+05:00

By Kathryn Lively

What we typically learn about Pakistan in school likely involves their tenuous relationship with India. Indeed, conflicts between the two nations have simmered and erupted on occasion long before modern-day Pakistan was formed in 1947 following a split from the British Indian empire. Nonetheless, these conflicts have not prevented the Republic of Pakistan from distinguishing itself as an emerging economy among the Next 11 countries.
A largely Islamic republic, Pakistan ranks in the top fifty among global economies and recorded a nominal gross domestic product of close to $175 billion in 2010. This represents a growth of two percent, yet shows that Pakistan has potential for stronger growth in the industrial sector in the future.
Pakistan is known primarily for the following exported goods, the majority of which are distributed to top export partners in the United States, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom:
Textiles - Pakistan is one of the top producers of cotton in the world, and consequently the textile industry is one of their most important and profitable. Nearly forty percent of Pakistan's overall industry involves textiles and fabrics.
Rice - Though rice is not the largest crop in the republic, it is one of the highest in demand among trade nations. Pakistan is especially known for its long-grained basmati rice and other aromatic grains.
Leather - Tanned leathers and animal hides account on average for about $300 million in export sales for Pakistan.
Carpeting - Many of the ornamental rugs and carpets coming from Pakistan are still hand-loomed, and nearly all of the rugs products in the country are exported around the world.
Main industries overall in Pakistan include the following:

Textile production and clothing manufacture
Chemical production
Food processing
Transportation and automobile production
Telecommunications
Paper products

To maintain productivity as an emerging nation, Pakistan relies upon a number of imported products from their chief trading partners: China, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Petroleum and byproducts for fueling cars and industrial plants, machinery for process and production, plastics, paper and tea rank among the more in-demand products that are not readily accessible domestically.
As an emerging economy, Pakistan shows great promise alongside others in the Next 11 grouping. The clothes you buy, the rice you may cook from dinner, and the rug decorating your living room are likely to originate from this country. As conflicts are negotiated, one may hope to see friendlier trade ties formed with surrounding countries.

Budget 2013-14 and Effects In Pakistan

2013-07-28T20:43:00.003+05:00

By M Nouman Umar

Pre-election high hopes are now fading away among the people of Pakistan, who have voted for the big slogans and beautiful dreams.
Like always, these politicians have approached the thinking of poor people of Pakistan with sweet dreams and fruitful results before the elections. Just after the formation of the government and announcement of the budget, these hopeless people once again repenting on their decisions which provided PML N government majority in the recent elections. Traditional approach of addressing the problems of the people of Pakistan is negating the claims and manifesto of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz.
The government of Pakistan seems to be incapable to address the problems of Pakistan in the good manner. It's like a "New wine in the old bottle" concept with the new government. The business friendly budget does not have anything significant, to offer to the poor of this country besides higher taxes and price. This will certainly hit the poor of the country who are already facing lots of problems like energy crises, gas shortage, poor health and basic life facilities.
Taxing the poor is not a new idea and governments in past have used same practices for its short terms objectives of money gathering. Similarly, indirect taxes on people in the shape of price hike will deteriorate the overall economic situation in the country. Huge taxes in the petroleum prices will provide basis to uncontrolled inflation in the country which will impact to the people in the form of price hike.
An ill-sighted approach of revenue collection and leaving big fishes out of tax net will further increase the fire. Tough proposed cuts in the expenditures of Prime Minister House and government officials are still slogans yet and will be judged later. Furthermore, introducing huge money on laptops schemes across the country is just wastage of national money and the same should be used to strengthen economy.
Moreover, the expenditure in the form of development budget in the new public projects may further result in failed enterprises such as PIA and Railway. Instead of healing wounds of these enterprises, Government of Pakistan is opening new doors for corruption and mismanagement.
I hope that Government of the Pakistan may reconsider its policies and proposals presented in the recent budget 2013-14 for the betterment of the Pakistani people. They should devise such projects and policies which can provide relief to the people of Pakistan so that a healthy society can be build in Pakistan.

Salala Incident - 1st Anniversary

2012-11-28T21:38:00.000+05:00

Salala incident took place of 26th November, 2011 when two Pakistani military posts were attacked by US-led NATO forces. Forces opened fire at two check posts of Pakistan Military on border. It killed 24 soldiers and injured 13. It resulted in blockage of NATO supply, evacuation of Shamsi Air Field and widened gap between Pakistan and US relations.

This incident again proved that Pakistan's nuclear arsenal is disliked by the west and there is a covert cold war against Pakistan. When Pakistan is acting as an ally in this so called war on terror, in these circumstances this attack was mere violation of Pakistan's sovereignty. Most of the Pakistanis think that it was an intentional attack. And, since a year, no apology proves that this attack was having some intentions. US can apologies to India on investigation with Shah Rukh Khan, but blood of 24 Pakistani soldiers on the hands of US do not deserve any sort of apology or regret.

US has tried on each and every ground to led Pakistan down. India gets all energy deals like civil nuclear, all gas and oil supplies, access to all markets but Pakistan is denied with energy deals and Pakistan is free to make contract at its own with Iran. It does not get its share from the coalition funds. In these circumstances Pakistan must revisit its stance in WoT, and it coalition with US, in fact Pakistan has to re-assess loyalty of US towards Pakistan. Being an ally in WoT, Pakistan has suffered a lot in both battle field and economic field. Most of the problems of Pakistan are due to being part of this so called WoT. Pakistani economy is almost on the verge of collapse because of no investment and flight of capital due insecurities of part of investors. Pakistan must aside itself from this so called war. This can only be the way for resolving problems of Pakistan.

God bless Pakistan.
