I blog about people who have done laudable acts and events that bring out the best in people no matter how ordinary they may be. I intend to write about interesting stories from where we can draw inspiration. Here, I also express my interests, advocacy, and ideas; opinions and spiritual convictions that somehow, in one way or another, might give relevant insight to the readers.
<link Lin

Jeremy Lin c/o Wikiped

A new word has echoed around the world of professional basketball in the US. It’s “Linsanity” referring to the point guard of New York Knicks, Jeremy Lin, a Taiwanese-American who has displayed exceptional basketball skills and has lead the Knicks to a seven game winning streak. His gaining fame, undoubtedly, perhaps following the footsteps of Kobe Bryant and perhaps the legend, his airness Michael Jordan.

His buzzer beating three point shot during their last game against the Toronto Raptors has won not only the game for his team Knicks but also more attention from basketball fans for himself.

This new young athletic icon is becoming an inspiration to many basketball players around the world. Based on interviews I have seen on sports news coverages, it seems that he is a humble man. I have not seen any trace of fame getting into his head. Perhaps, that is why he is getting good breaks in his sports career.

Hope to see more from the “Linsanity”. Let’s see if his heroics would lead the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals this year.

I apologize to those following my blogs for that. Actually, I have prepared an article to start the blogging year but for some reasons I have failed to publish it.

Perhaps I have been too busy with my scripts or maybe I have been too lazy to write. Well, I guess it happens to writers occasionally. They tire out too.

I have prepared an article about Elin Nordegren, Tiger Woods ex-wife. Her decision to demolish her mansion and build a new one on it has amazed me. It seems too capricious and a waste of fortune but it is her mansion and money anyway so she could do whatever she wants with it. It has been in the news right at the start of the new year so I have thought of writing about it to share how some people has started their new year.

Starting the New Year right is an important first step to achieve a fruitful year. Many factors can arise from the results of your first step and if you will miss it, people will get ahead of you and it would be difficult to catch up. Well, I can say that I have not started the New Year right this time but I can still catch up with the ten months remaining in 2012. I am looking forward to a more frequent posting in the next weeks.

I have written a one-act Christmas musicale play for our church and now, I am writing another one-act musicale play for our church anniversary. It is a little time-consuming so I have had to set aside my blogging jobs for a while. That should explain why I have not updated my blogs for almost two months.

Just this morning, I have checked back my Adgitize account, I have been shocked to know that Adgitize is closing. It is quite a sad turn especially at the start of a new year. I have been waiting for the launch of Adgitize for business but things seem have not been favorable for the Adgitize company so it has to close shop.

Maybe Ken can find a way to make a similar advertising platform for bloggers in the future. Until then, best regards to all fellow Adgitizers out there. For over two weeks now, I have not updated any of my blogs. I cannot say I have run out of things to write because I cannot possibly run out of anything to write considering I have five blogs running. Perhaps, I just lost some energy and inspiration to continue and needed some time to rest.

But one of the biggest contributor to this sort of demoralization is my Alexa Ranking. I don’t know what’s going wrong but it’s dropping too low. It used to go up steadily but when I have reached the 300,000 mark, it has stopped and have cascaded slowly and now it is at over a million again.

I don’t know if I would still like to display the Alexa widget on my blog because it does not seem to help. Anyway, I am still considering it.

In the initial rounds, Marquez was able to establish stance against Pacquiao. He showed good boxing skills as shown with his swift and effective counter punches. However, even if he was able to connect hard punches, they were not enough to stagger his opponent.

Pacquiao came back in succeeding rounds with punches on Marquez' face, swelling his right eye.
The Mexicans among the crowd could not accept the outcome of the fight. They believed Marquez won the fight but the judges saw the fight the other way.

I did not see the fight live but I was able to watch the replay last night. I felt it was close but I felt that Marquez’ effort was not enough to topple Pacquiao. For one, I felt he did not dominate Pacquiao completely. He could have hurt the champion but he was hurt too. Still, I believe, it was not the way to take the WBO Welterweight belt away from Pacquiao.

The Official Score Card

While Pacquiao also failed to dominate his challenger, he was able to connect crucial punches that were enough to steal rounds against Marquez.

Although, I observed that Pacquiao was not in his usual rhythm. Well, it seemed. I did not see his vicious left straights and crosses. Maybe age was taking a toll from him. Nevertheless, I was convinced that he won the fight. I would not have contested a draw but to say that Marquez won it, I personally think that is wrong.

He has twenty-four fingers and toes in all! I find this story very interesting! I have seen people with extra fingers before but they function as a real finger. They would just dangle down the palm.

Just as the caption in the image mentions, Yoandri’s fingers and toes look so perfect! In fact, if you were not a keen observer, you would not notice them at all.

It becomes very special because the next 11-11-11 would come only after 100 years, which is on November 11, 2111. Most of us here now, would not be alive to see that date again.

Many relate this numbers to numerology. Many say it is good luck especially for those who celebrate their birthdays. (Incidentally, I have two friends celebrating their birthday today). Some have even arranged weddings or other special events today in belief that the date draws good vibes.

On the other end, some connect this date to bad omens. In fact, Big Air Studios has produced a movie with 11-11-11 as the title. Apparently, it is another hard core horror thriller from the makers of Saw II,III & IV.

Personally, I do not believe in numerology or in good luck or bad luck and I do not enjoy watching horror movies. So far, this is just another ordinary day.

Actually, we can make this day or any day for that matter memorable and special by doing something we know is good.

It has brought the town of Bunawan into the limelight suddenly.

Yesterday, a team of experts from National Geographic led by an Australian crocodile expert, Dr. Adam Britton measured “Lolong” officially and confirmed it to be the largest crocodile in the world measuring 20.3 feet long. Reporters quoted him to say that it was like measuring a dinosaur.

Many animal rights activists, however, still press for the release of the croc back into the wild. They believe that the crocodile should be allowed to live in its own habitat.

Well, I respect the opinion of animal rights activists. Indeed, animals should not be removed from the wild. However, in the case of “Lolong”, releasing him back into the wild might cause alarm to the residents of Bunawan and in turn cause them to hunt for the crocodile to prevent it from doing them harm.

I believe it would be better now if “Lolong” would stay in captivity on the condition that the local government of Bunawan would guarantee its safety and care. Eventually, they can improve the area where it stays by expanding the perimeter and make it a virtual wild. I hope it would be possible.

They have considered it a form of art. In ancient tribes, they use tattoos to signify a warrior’s heroism in war. The more tattoos one has corresponds to the number of enemy he has killed in battle.

While tattooing has become a form of art in many cultures, it remains to have a stigma in other cultures. In Jewish law, their people are forbidden to wear tattoos on their bodies.

In recent years, people have known tattooing to be marks of people from prison since it has become a form of branding by gangs and fraternities inside penal colonies.

Thus, tattoing has become a controversial form of artistic expression. This is the reason why the new Barbie Doll (tokidoki) has created a sort of controversy after its launch into market. The Tokidoki Barbie Doll has tattoes all over her body.

Many parents dislike the idea of a Barbie Doll with tattoes on her since it might send the signal to kids that it is ok to have tattoes on their bodies even at their young age.

Well, I guess it is a matter between parents and kids.

This old man has an amazing strength undoubtedly. Normally, people at his age are weak and sickly but this man shows supreme health condition.

He might be one for the books; someone extremely extra-ordinary for anyone to duplicate easily. Maybe the most important thing is that we should start to take care of our health even before we start to feel the inevitable process of aging. In that way, we can avoid too many ailments by the time we retire so that we can enjoy those times with our love ones.
Many centuries ago, men have used rock walls to preserve their culture. They carve stones, tablets and pieces of wood to write about their ways and norms to keep a legacy for the next generations that would come.

Along the years, sculpture has become an important form of art and I have heard about people carving wood, ice, clay, even steel to express artistry. I have seen chefs carve fruits like watermelon, apples, oranges, etc. to garnish their mouth-watering dishes.

However, I find it amazing to see a banana fruit as a medium for sculpture carving. Keisuke Yamada, a Japan-born artist uses banana fruits for his carvings. I can say that his ingenuity is at the extreme! Amazing work of art!

It has struck me since I haven’t realized that Twitter can also help in that manner. I mean, I know Twitter is out there to connect people online especially those from distant places.

Apparently, the woman (Chiam) was suffering from severe depression that she wanted to end her life to escape from her emotional struggles. She posted about what she was feeling to her Twitter account including a photo of Changi beach -where she was at that time- saying that it was the last scene she was going to see.

A picture of Changi Beach posted on 31-year-old Elaine Chiam's twitter account, at the time she planned to kill herself. Chiam is believed to be suffering from clinical depression. (Photo: Twitter)

Concerned friends and Twitters who had read about her tweets rushed to her location and tried to track her down until a passer by found her in a dozy state apparently from drug overdose and called for medical help. Her boyfriend came in time to accompany his girlfriend inside the ambulance that brought the woman in Changi General Hospital.

Later, her boyfriend sent a tweet that she was going to be fine.

Many say that it is not advisable to reveal your exact location with your tweets for security reasons. Yet sometimes, telling other people where you are can be of help particularly in situations like this when instant help is needed.

Dan Wheldon

Dan Wheldon, a prominent British IndyCar racer has died from a freak car crash in the 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He has died at a young age of 33 because of head trauma.

It is sad that his flourising career in car racing has ended abruptly. This only shows how dangerous these car races are to the racers. Well, it seems that even thick and tough racing helmets are not enough to protect the head from trauma injury. I’m sure they all know that but they enjoy running at more than 200mph with their great cars. The thrill and excitement must be very enjoyable but the little mistake will be fatal literally.

Wheldon’s interest with racing has begun in his childhood. He has started karting at the age of four and eventually has leveled up to the junior ranks of car racing in his teens. However, his family could no longer afford the financial demands of the sport in England, so he has had to move to America where he has joined lower open-wheeled circuits at the start. The rest is history.

Dan Wheldon is a great racer but accidents do not respect fame, I guess. I hope racing tracks would become safer to riders.

I have planned to post this article days ago after the chemical plant fire in Texas has filled news headlines. However, certain events have caused me to delay posting.

The Magnablend's Chemical Plant in Texas has caught fire and have emitted toxic fumes into the atmosphere. It is one of the most destructive environmental accident in recent years after the Fukushima nuclear power plant melt-down in Japan. Perhaps, the toxicity it has caused within the nearby area is not comparable to a nuclear fall out, but the dark fumes it has emitted into the air have added more green house gases that intensifies global warming.

Global warming has been the culprit that experts point at concerning the occurrences of destructive weather systems particularly in the Pacific. Clearly, the industrialized nations have the most contribution in emitting these hazardous gases and in view of this, they should be spending more in the global initiative to neutralize global warming and climate change.

I hope those huge industries in the first world countries become more responsible with their toxic wastes and spend more for facilities that would reduce the risk of chemical accidents.
I have learned from an article in Yahoo News, which have originally appeared on Tecca that Steve Jobs is a college drop out.

The lead mind behind the most successful company on the planet never graduated from college, in fact, he didn't even get close. After graduating from high school in Cupertino, California — a town now synonymous with 1 Infinite Loop, Apple's headquarters — Jobs enrolled in Reed College in 1972. Jobs stayed at Reed (a liberal arts university in Portland, Oregon) for only one semester, dropping out quickly due to the financial burden the private school's steep tuition placed on his parents.

In his famous 2005 commencement speech to Stanford University, Jobs said of his time at Reed: "It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the seven miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple." (news excerpt source: ph.news.yahoo.com)

Steve Jobs has dropped college education not because he has been too lazy but because he could not afford college education at that time. It must have been a difficult situation for a genius dreamer like him but it never stop him from pursuing his interest and achieving his goals. Persistence is the name of the game. If you have much of it, you will most likely get on top.

I am not saying that education is not important. Yes, many have become successful even without a bachelor’s degree but not everyone has a genius brain like that of Steve Jobs. Learning is a teasure that we all can obtain formally or informally and we should make the most out of what we have.

Perhaps, education is important to Steve Jobs that is why his inventions and innovations leans toward learning and making learning easier for people like the Mac and Apple I-Pad.

Steve Jobs definitely will go up to the roster of Amazing People of our generation.
Sadly, this time, Apple Inc itself has publicized Steve Jobs’ passing.

In a statement, Apple Inc has announced the tragic development... follow this link to read the official statement from AP

Indeed, Steve Job’s ingenuity has made the world better. The technology he has introduced has made peoples’ lives at work, at home and at play easier and more pleasurable.

At 56, his passing is a big loss to Apple at this time when companies race against each other toward better and innovative solutions to the growing demand of both business and leisure.

Steve Job’s fame will never decay, as his works will remain in the hands of millions of people. Whenever we touch our Ipod, Ipad, or Mac, we will remember a great man who has once traversed this earth. His memories will definitely linger and I hope his family who now mourn may find consolation in the honor that people give to their beloved Steve Jobs.

image c/o soetalk.com

Today, hundreds of thousands of students worldwide converge to give special honor to their teachers for their contribution in establishing their moral framework and educational growth. Without teachers, there can be no learning.

Indeed, we have to be thankful for the sacrifices our teachers have endured just to bring us the information and learning that equip us in facing the challenges of our time. They have mold us to what we are now and we would not be able to work toward our dreams and goals if not for the time they have selflessly devoted in teaching us.

I remember talking to an eight year old little girl… I asked her.

“Would you like to be a teacher like your mom when you grow up?”

In response she said…

“No.”

I was a bit surprised by her answer. In curiosity I asked again…

“Why not?”

“Because she’s always upset when she arrives home”.

Teaching is also a very difficult profession. Not so much about the task, but because of the responsibility you carry on your shoulder and it becomes even heavier when students do not want to cooperate. I guess, the best way to honor our teachers and mentors is to be obedient students.

“World Teachers' Day, held annually on October 5th since 1994, commemorates teachers’ organizations worldwide. Its aim is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers.

According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development” (en.wikipedia.org)

Teaching is said to be the noblest profession and there is no debate to that. There can be no professionals if there have not been teachers who have imparted knowledge and the ability to use it efficiently. Happy Teachers’ Day to all teachers!

I have thought that it’s funny but I have never thought it would lead to one DPWH’s employee’s suspension from work.

The news article from Yahoo news says that the employee have posted the photoshopped pictures on Facebook. It seems that a blogger have discovered it and so the images have gone around like a big joke that have sold like pancakes. I have even seen the three DPWH officials on a photoshopped copy of the Rogue magazine cover that have featured actress Anne Cutis. Inevitably, the three DPWH officials have been at the center of mockery.

It is fun to play with images in Photoshop but we have to understand that we need to be responsible with whatever we would like to do. We may have artistic liberty but we always need to be responsible with what we do for our own good.

We may not have any bad intention. We just want to have some fun but when people’s integrity or honor would be compromised, like what the GMA-7 plug says, “we should think before we click”.

I think it is profesionally painful to think that you’re going to be suspended just because of photoshopped images like the photoshopped photos of the DPWH officials.

Images above courtesy of:
http://quiapo.wordpress.com/
This has been the only time in recent history that huge waves have slammed the sea walls of Manila Bay. Around thirty percent of the wall have been destroyed by the strong force of the waves.

The Manila Ocean Park at the Luneta Park have been badly damaged according to news reports. We have been there only once and we like the place. It is sad that the park has absorbed such destructive waves.

If you will look at the video footages of the storm surge, it must have been very scary as the waves slam the sea walls and have moved across with a height taller than coconut trees reaching and flooding the main highway up to the US Embassy in the Philippines. It has been so high that the people inside the embassy have had to be rescued from the embassy.

The cities around the Manila Bay area particularly the cities of Navotas and Malabon, and Dinalupihan Bataan have been declared under a state of calamity.

And now, even before the cities could recover from typhoon Pedring’s onsalught, a new typhoon of the same strength, typhoon Quiel, threatens Northern Philippines.

We cannot help but link these destructive storms to the effect of climate change and global warming. Below is a short video footage of the storm surge at the Manila Bay area:

Aleeia Macli

Aleeia Maclit IV is a nine year old girl, who has been born blind. However, she has shown great courage and confidence even in her tender age. She has shown determination and even though she is blind, she seem to see where she wants to go.

Her story is a special feature in documentary by Howie Severino for I-Witness, a TV documentary aired on GMA News TV. I like the way Howie has described her, he said that “even though she is in darkness, she has a bright outlook in life”.

She studies in a public school in Barangka Marikina, (Philippines). She currently tops the first grading period in her grade two class. She studies in a regular class, meaning, her classmates have no impairment at all. Yet, she has managed to top her class! She is indeed amazing!

She values education so much and hungers to learn, in fact her dream is to become a teacher and share whatever she has learned to visually impared children like her. Aside from her very positive perspective of life, I admire the support her teachers and her 26 year-old elder sister is giving her. Her sister says that even if her teachers have been giving great moral support to her, if she she could not get the same support at home, it would not matter. So she helps her out with her studies and homeworks. To me, that is an amazing sibling relationship.

Aleeia is amazing because even if she is visually impaired, she looks at her future in a very positive way. She is an inspiration not only to me but for all people who struggle with disability.
It is not exactly a spectacular event but it is a rare weather occurrence in the area of Wisconsin, particularly in Lake Michigan. Fortunately, it has lasted for only about 46 seconds and has dissipated immediately.

Waterspouts might not be as strong compared to their land counterparts as we have seen in the movie “Twister” but they pose a great danger to sea vessels, airplanes, helicopters and even swimmers. Experts say that the wind velocity within the vortex, calculated at 62-67 miles per hour, can destroy coral reefs if it forms near the shoreline and even marine life that are close to the surface at that time.. There have been reports that water spouts can pick up marine life and throw them out into some near land area.

During the 90’s, a terrible flood has swept over Ormoc in Leyte Philppines where more than 3,000 people have perished if I remember correctly. The amount of rainfall in the area at that time has been tremendously excessive. Some residents say that possibly, a waterspout have thrown a large amount of water into their area. However, that statement is not scientifically validated.

A NASA decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite as big as a bus and weighs around 6 tons, is plummeting back to earth and is expected to hit ground anytime now although the exact trajectory remains uncertain.

The last time I have heard of a NASA satellite falling from the sky is in 1979, when the Skylab has fallen back to earth particularly in Australia. I remember, drawing an image of the Skylab on paper. I am still eight years old that time and I have been intrigued so much by the falling satellite, which has been all over the news although I have failed to see it coming.

Experts do not expect any potential danger from the falling satellite as they say that it will disintegrate into shattered pieces as it re-enter the earth’s atmosphere. Instead of feeling anxious over it, they are even saying that this is a beautiful scene to behold because it would look like a meteor shower as it re-enters the atmosphere.

It is amazing how man can fly out into space through machines. Years ago, this could have sounded crazy. In the history of space science, such occurrences have not brought any damage to life and environment. I hope this time, when another NASA Satellite plummets back to earth, it will pose any danger to the environment.

The bright and shining colors of nail polishes adorn their fingers and excite men who look at their hands. It is one way of showing good personal hygeine.

In past years, women are using false nails (like false teeth) on their fingers to keep them look very good. I have heard about celebrities using those stuffs openly.

However, Chris Walton, a professional singer in Las Vegas, flaunts her very long nails that measures to about 20 feet in length (combined total). It is quite extraordinary for a woman to let her nails grow that long.

I can’t imagine how she uses her hands with those long nails! I wonder how she opens a cola in can? Or how she types on the keyboard or use a mouse?

She might just out of the ordinary, having an eccentric personality perhaps but she is definitely as normal as everyone else.

The Guiness Book of World Records has declared her as the woman with the longest nails in the world!

Ortiz Fight: Follow Up

I have heard sports analysts saying that Mayweather’s final blows against Ortiz are not illegal. They say that the referee have signaled that the fight continues so the fight at that point is live. It is not, therefore, Mayweather’s fault if Ortiz has not covered himself for the continuance of the fight.

Welterweight champion and pound for pound boxer, Congressman Manny Pacquiao sees it the same way. He says that referees always warn boxers to protect themselves at all times so he says that what Mayweather has done is not illegal as far as the rules of boxing is concerned. However, he says that given the same situation, he will NOT do the same. I cannot quote him verbatim but in essence he is saying that he believes in good sportsmanship and such act does not reflect good sportsmanship.

I guess, we can all put this controversy to rest and let the boxing fans decide whether Mayweather really deserve the belt or not.

I know I write about amazing people and events but I would like to make an exemption with this amazingly disgusting boxing main event in Las Vegas last September 17 (US time).

The fight has started good with Mayweather scoring good punches. I have thought that he is leading in the score cards. However, in the fateful fourth round, disaster seems have crumbled down the boxing ring.

Ortiz has found an opening in Mayweathers defense and has managed to throw a barrage of punches hitting black American real good. However, he has gotten too eager to knock out his opponent by sneaking in a head butt, which hit Mayweather on the chin.

It’s a dirty tactic. Ortiz has wasted a golden opportunity to a clean win over Mayweather. However, he has acknowledged that he has committed something wrong and has expressed an apology. He has approached Mayweather to say sorry he even kisses him but the referee has paused the fight and ruled to deduct points from Ortiz as a penalty.

They have gone back at the center of the ring and have touched gloves. Ortiz approaches Mayweather and kisses him to say sorry again but perhaps still indignant about the head butt, Mayweather has responded with a left hook and a right hook on Ortiz’ face that has brought him down on the canvass.

It’s disgusting! It’s a foul punch! It’s not the way of a true champion! Hitting a defenseless opponent at the break is unjustifiable. Another disgusting part is when the referee has started the “ten count” even though he has not signaled a resumption of the fight. He is not even looking at the fighters!
I think I am not the only one who disagrees with the result. Mayweather does not deserve the championship belt. It’s true, Ortiz is the first to commit a foul but it does not mean that Mayweather has a license to commit another foul in retaliation.

The way I look at the fight, Mayweather does not deserve to win. Although, I’m not saying that everyone who has witnessed the fight sees it the same way or should see it in that way. It’s just a personal opinion. It’s just way I see it. To me, it is one of the, if not the most disgusting “victory” on the ring ever.

Still, I would like to commend Ortiz. I think he is the better boxer. He has committed a mistake but he has accepted it and has apologized for it. He knows the punch is foul but he has not taken it as an excuse for losing the championship belt. He has not taken it against the referee either. He just says, “Nobody is perfect, not I and not even the referee… It just happens…” He even congratulates Mayweather and his corner. To me, he has a mark of a good athletic sportsmanship totally opposite of Mayweather, who has even berated the 80 year old sports announcer when the latter has confronted him regarding the foul punches. He’s so undeserving of the belt! The Mayweather-Ortiz bout for me is the most disgusting championship victory ever.
