The first song that evening is mellow horns, Jeep-ready drums and laid back flow. It is everything you could ask for in a tune. I waited anxiously for the end of the song, hoping Westwood hadn’t shouted out the artists before he dropped the record. “That’s Black Moon, the hot remix of ‘I’ve Gotcha Open,’” he says. I saved my pocket money for three weeks after that night, £30 in total: £10 for the train fare up to London; £10 for the Whut? Thee Album; and £10 for Enta Da Stage.

Nearly thirteen years later, Evil Dee is reaching London properly, for the first time. Alongside his brother Mr. Walt, Evil Dee provided the musical backdrops for some of hip-hop’s best loved anthems. The rolling bass, the rugged beats and the jazzy flourishes on top made the Boot Camp Click one of the cornerstones of New York’s bid to bring hip-hop back to The Big Apple after Snoop and Dre had flown it out West for a while. And the formula that put them on top back in the early `90s hasn’t changed at all, despite the industry’s obsession with first week numbers and sales projections.

The Brooklyn born DJ and producer is in good spirits before his show. He has busy months ahead of him with the imminent recording of a new Black Moon album, a podcast that’s doing platinum numbers and the birth of a child. For the record, he has already decided the first drum machine Mini Dee will be using.

“Only cats I don’t see are the owners of Rawkus. They’re hiding. They disrespected hip-hop.”

Format: Working from the present and going back; you’ve just started your own podcast. What made you decide to do that?
Evil Dee: I was going to start putting mixtapes out again, because a lot of people keep requesting them. So I was getting ready to do that and the day I was going to buy all the new equipment, DJ Drama got arrested. When that happened I was about to invest a good $9000 to $10,000. When that happened I thought maybe I should chill for a sec and see how this turns out, because I didn’t want to buy all that equipment and then be stuck. So while I was doing that, my man DJ Crazy Bizarro was like ‘Yo, I’m doing this podcast you should do one.’ I was like ‘Nah, man.’

So one day he finally showed me his numbers. He said that all he did was put a picture up of me and him sitting on my stoop, kicking it on the cover of his podcast and he had mad people hitting him up like ‘Yo, where Evil Dee at? What’s up with him?’ So, that’s when I said, ‘Maybe I should make that happen’ and I just did it. Ten-thousand people hit the first podcast! I’m thinking, that’s kinda hot! Second podcast went up to 300,000. So I was like ‘This is crazy!’ Now, I’m on a million. I’m on my sixth podcast. And this is not a million altogether, it’s per show. So the podcast is like a new mixtape. So everybody can get a free taste of the flavor. A mixtape was a promotional item, anyway. Podcasts are the same thing, except now instead of you getting it at a store, you download it in your iPod for free. If you don’t have an iPod you just hit the page and press play.

Format: In terms of when you were getting a start in the production game, who influenced you?
Evil Dee: My brother and The Bomb Squad, 45 King – it was a combination of everything that was out at that time. That’s kind of how I got inspired. When you’re a DJ and you get two copies of a record and cut it up, you’re producing a version of the record. You might be a producer already. When you’re at a party, you’re producing that party. A lot of people don’t know that, but that’s what it is. All DJs are producers.

Format: What do you prefer: producing or deejaying?
Evil Dee: Right now, I’ll say DJing, but tomorrow I’ll say production. I have fun DJ-wise. When I’m at a party it’s about seeing people rocking to what I’m playing. Because I’m a DJ’s DJ, I’m not a fad DJ. What I do when I go into a party, I analyse how the party is going like ‘Alright, if I drop this record…’ I think as I play. A lot of DJs don’t do that. You’ll see me look at the crowd. That’s how you’re supposed to do things. I treat it like how a boxer would train. If I’m DJing with somebody, I study their style. I look up their stuff, see if they got anything on YouTube or whatever and I study it. And that’s what bugs people out. Even coming over [London], I kind of looked around, listened to BBC. It’s funny, `cause I listened to a couple of shows and I was like ‘OK, now that’s not really what’s going on over there.’ Just like in America; on your radio they only play a certain type of thing. What they want to hear. Also, one thing that I do know is that people hire me to be me. But at the same time I want see what you’re rocking so I can bounce off that.

Format: Serato or Vinyl?
Evil Dee: Vinyl! Who would prefer Serato? Serato’s good for convenience, but vinyl, all day. If it was up to me, I’d bring my ten crates worth, but I’m not trying to lose records along the way.

Format: Like the infamous crate of records that got lost on the way back from Japan?
Evil Dee: We bought $20,000 worth of records and tried to ship it home. Why did we do that? That was the last time I saw those records. That was two cases of records. We shipped three. One came through.

Format: You remember what records they were?
Evil Dee: Records that I’d never seen before. Some of them, I’ve never seen again. There was like alternate versions to records. In Japan, as a DJ, you’re going to find a lot of records. A lot of records you’ve never heard of before, so we went crazy. And then I was seeing all these jazz breaks. We bought way more funk and soul than hip-hop out there. But the fact remains, we shipped it home and it disappeared in customs. All the rap stuff was not that bad, but it was the funk and soul. I had records, I’d never seen, like James Brown’s Live At The Apollo – the Japanese version!

Format: It’s been 10 years since Soundbombing. Do you still see all the cats who were part of that?
Evil Dee: I see almost everybody. Talib, I always see him. Mos Def, Shabaam Shadeeq. RA The Rugged Man, I haven’t seen him in a minute, but you know once in a while. A lot of cats who were on that tape I see. The Artifacts, too. I see Tame One. I see them separately, because the group’s not together any more. I see almost everyone. Only cats I don’t see are the owners of Rawkus. They’re hiding. They disrespected hip-hop.

Format: Isn’t Rakus coming back out again with some new acts?
Evil Dee: But you don’t see those dudes.

“I think when Pro-Tools got introduced it made it convenient for a lot of suckers to get in the game.”

Format: As far as the music goes you’ve always stayed true to your initial formula. Were you surprised, given the current climate of hip-hop that Buckshot and Sean P’s albums have done so well?
Evil Dee: I’m not surprised, because there’s a want and need for what we do. There’s a want and a need for boom-bap. It’s like a girl – you see that she looks banging, you’re like ‘Yo, she’s dope!’ now, you’re going to mess with other girls, but you’re going to have that girl on your mind and if you can get her, you’re going to get her. That’s what it is. That’s hip-hop right now. We have a lot of fad music coming out. You know what happens with fads? They come and they go. No one’s making classics right now. Me and DJ Spinna just had this conversation this morning.

Format: If you could get any vocalist on a Beatminerz beat, who would you choose and why?
Evil Dee: If I could, Sly Stone, because he was just funky with it. I would like to do something with George Clinton. George Clinton over a Beatminerz track? Hip-hop-wise, Redman and Method Man.

Format: Besides the radio shows, you write as well, too. What was your best interview?
Evil Dee: Madlib. And it’s the illest story. Madlib doesn’t do interviews. If you notice when he does interviews it’s always with the same person?

Format: Egon from Stones Throw.
Evil Dee: Yeah, Egon does a lot of his interviews. What happened was a friend of mine had a magazine called Mugshot and she was like, ‘Yo, E. I’ve got an interview with Madlib and I don’t know what to ask him. Could you do it for me?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, alright.’ I told Madlib to meet me at this record store called A1 in New York. And as soon as I walk in he was like ‘Yo, I been dying to meet you!’ and that’s how the interview started. The respect was there. We sat down and talked about different techniques. There was a lot of stuff I didn’t put in the interview, because it was too deep, we were talking about recording techniques and we were talking about jazz music. Chemistry was there. That’s the best interview I did.

Format: If there’s one thing you miss about hip-hop in the `90s what would you say it is?
Evil Dee: Hard beats. Kanye’s trying it, but thank God we’ve got Premier. If I had it my way there would be a whole lot of things different. We’d still be rocking on tape. I wouldn’t have got on the Pro-Tools. There’s so many things, too many to mention. Basically, we’d be recording like back in the day. I think when Pro-Tools got introduced it made it convenient for a lot of suckers to get in the game. Now that dude who was the herb around the way has got Pro-Tools and he’s so hot. One of the problems with hip-hop, too, is that we have so many followers, we have no more leaders.

Format: So which drum machines are you feeling at the moment?
Evil Dee: SP-1200, Akai 950, MPC 2000 XL and then I use a lot of Pro-Tools plug-ins, the instruments, but don’t get it twisted, my beats are still my beats.

Format: Just focusing on Boot Camp Clik for a second, are you going to be producing tracks for the next Heltah Skeltah album?
Evil Dee: I really don’t know. I’ll be honest with you. That’s more of a Heltah Skeltah call, because they’ve got to be ready. As for a new Black Moon album we’re putting the elements together for it now. I started making beats for it. We’re going to Japan next week so we’ll have a meeting over there.

Format: What was the deal with the beat tapes you guys were putting out?
Evil Dee: You know what’s funny? I was cleaning out my house, because my moms just passed.

Format: Sorry to hear that.
Evil Dee: It’s cool. She’s in a better place. Cleaning out the house, I found demos that I’d done. It’s crazy she kept everything!

“…one thing that I will say: hip-hop has tried to hide Black Moon.”

Format: Are those the ones with you rhyming, back in the day?
Evil Dee: Yeah. I know my place! That’s why I don’t rhyme now. Although people said it was dope, I didn’t think it was. I had my own style and everything, but I just thought I did music better. As for the other tapes – let me tell you the truth about that. We did a bunch of remixes that never came out. I decided to leak it out. But in order to get it out, I disguised it as an instrumental album.

Format: How did you come to do the remix of D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar?”

Evil Dee: That was because his manager at the time was real cool with us. I was the first one to play “Brown Sugar” on radio, period. So, when I did that. His manager, at the time, who ran Motown, was like ‘Yo, why don’t you do a remix for it?’ So that’s how that went down.

Format: How did you get Kool G Rap on it?
Evil Dee: What happened was, first we were going to use Rakim, but he was too busy. Then they were running around trying to get people and I was like ‘Yo, B. You manage G Rap, let’s get him.’ It was all in the family.

Format: You heard Funkmaster Flex’s July 4 `90s set, he was spinning as much of your music as he was the Wu.
Evil Dee: I heard it. You know what it is. And this is one thing that I will say: hip-hop has tried to hide Black Moon. We don’t get credit for what we’ve done. Who brought hip-hop back to the east coast, Black Moon! Wu-Tang, Nas, you could say Biggie, too. Not much else was hitting that hard. They try to erase Black Moon all the time. But the heads know, so I don’t mind. The proof’s in the pudding. Black Moon does a show and it sells out. Somebody bigger does a show and it doesn’t. That’s the proof right there.

Format: Can you finish the following sentence: Evil Dee is…
Evil Dee: On the mix! Come on, kick it!

More Info: http://www.myspace.com/djevildee

AN ARTICAL ON THE SP-1200 (FOR ALL PRODUCERS)

The Dirty Heartbeat of the Golden Age
Reminiscing on the SP-1200, the machine that defined New York hip-hop
by Ben Detrick

In the summer of 1987, E-mu Systems released the SP-1200, a drum machine and sampler designed for dance-music producers. An update of a previous model known as the SP-12, the souped-up edition allowed for the recording and manipulation of a 10.07-second sample with gritty 12-bit sound quality—now you could craft a complete instrumental on one portable machine.
Just as the Stradivarius or the Fender Stratocaster were standard-bearers by which other instruments were judged, the SP-1200 quickly became the tool of choice for East Coast beat-makers during rap's so-called "Golden Age," a period during the late '80s and early '90s, when sampling laws were still being meted out in courtrooms. Such artists as Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Gang Starr, Main Source, and the Notorious B.I.G. created classic joints over beats concocted on the SP-1200. The machine rose to such prominence that its strengths and weaknesses sculpted an entire era of music: The crunchy digitized drums, choppy segmented samples, and murky filtered basslines that characterize the vintage New York sound are all mechanisms of the machine.

Long ago toppled by more powerful equipment and computer-based production programs, the sampler continues to inspire enough cultish devotion that any prospective knob-twister still must shell out around $1,000 to go retro. We spoke with several of hip-hop's must celebrated veteran producers about their experiences with the SP-1200 over the last 20 years.

The Cast

Hank Shocklee Part of the Bomb Squad and producer for Public Enemy, Ice Cube, and Slick Rick.

Lord Finesse Producer for the Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, and Big L.

Pete Rock Recording artist with CL Smooth and producer for Heavy D, Nas, Das EFX, and House of Pain.

Ski Producer for Jay-Z, Camp Lo, and Sporty Thievz.

The Learning Curve

Pete Rock When I first got the SP-1200—I think that was back in '87—I was going to sessions with my cousin Heavy D, and he was working with Marley Marl. I would just be looking around and looking at the stuff they had and looking at what he was doing. Eddie F had the drum machine, and he showed me how to work it. I basically studied the manual—read it beginning to end and learned it like that. I used it all day, every day. I never came outside—just woke up happy to have a piece of machinery that made music. I didn't give a damn about anything else once I got that drum machine.

Ski The strength of the SP was definitely the way the 12-bit sounded when you threw the sample or the snare or the kick in there—it just sounded so dirty. It was a definite, definite fucking plus with the machine. The limited sampling time made you become more creative. That's how a lot of producers learned how to chop the samples: We didn't have no time, so we had to figure out ways to stretch the sounds and make it all mesh together. We basically made musical collages just by chopping little bits and notes.

Hank Shocklee There's little tricks that were developed on it. For example, you got 12 seconds [10.07, according to the manufacturer] of sample time to divide amongst eight pads. So depending on how much you use on each pad, you decrease the amount of sample time that you have. You take a 33 1/3 record and play it on 45, and you cheat the system. [Another] aspect that we created is out of a mistake—one day I was playing "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" and it came out real muffled. I couldn't hear any of the high-end part of it. I found out that if you put the phono or quarter-inch jack halfway in, it filters the high frequency. Now I just got the bass part of the sample. I was like, "Oh, shit, this is the craziest thing on the planet!"

The Machine and the Masters

Lord Finesse They had me as a special guest on Stretch and Bobbito, one of the popular radio shows of the '90s. I thought it would be slick if I brought my 1200 down. A lot of producers did total beats with their 1200, and I think I did two or three, and one specifically was when I chopped up Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." I chopped all around his voice using the 1200 and put an instrumental in the back. I played it over the air, and me and KRS-One freestyled over it. It was real slick.

Ski People said they never saw anyone work the SP as fast as me and Large Professor— not that it means anything. It's crazy. I can't explain it—it's like the shit is programmed in my brain. I worked with Jay-Z and did all of Reasonable Doubt on the SP-1200. For "Dead Presidents," everything was made on the SP, man: the whole sequence, the drum sounds, the Nas sample. The only thing that wasn't done on the SP was the sample, [but] I ran it through it to give it that sound.

Pete Rock Everything that you ever heard from me back in the day was the SP-1200. That machine made "Reminisce" ["They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)"], "Straighten It Out," "Shut 'Em Down," "Jump Around." When I made "Reminisce"—I had friend of mine that passed away, and it was a shock to the community. I was kind of depressed when I made it. And to this day, I can't believe I made it through, the way I was feeling. I guess it was for my boy. When I found the record by Tom Scott, basically I just heard something incredible that touched me and made me cry. It had such a beautiful bassline, and I started with that first. I found some other sounds and then heard some sax in there and used that. Next thing you know, I have a beautiful beat made. When I mixed the song down, I had Charlie Brown from Leaders of the New School in the session with me, and we all just started crying.

An End of an Era

Pete Rock I used the MPC [a technologically superior sampler line first introduced in 1988] on Soul Survivor II. That was kind of the beginning of using it. I thought it had a thinner sound than the SP, but it had way more sample time—like three minutes. So, can't beat that. I got hundreds of beats on the SP-1200, but I like the MPC. I'm really starting to get in the midst of it now.

Hank Shocklee They've mastered the computer to the point it does things the SP-1200 can't do. [But] we would have better records today if people said, "Look, you've got five hours to make a record." The problem is that people got all day. They got all week. They got all month. They got all year. So thus, you in there second-guessing yourself. With the 1200, you can't second-guess yourself, man. You got 2.5 seconds a pad, man. . . . Till this day, nobody has understood and created a machine that can best it.

AND CHECK OUT SOME CLASSIC TRACKS THAT WHERE MADE ON A SP-1200

THE SHOW LASTNITE WAS CRAZY

SO LASTNITE WAS A GOOD NITE I WAS SUPPOSE TO JUDGE A BEAT BATTLE IN HARLEM BUT WE ENED UP DRIVING AROUND

FOREVER JUST TRYING TO FIND THE PLACE SO THAT WASN'T HAPPENING...
