This drawing is a collaboration between myself, Sara Guindon and Chris Tucker that is being exhibited as part of the exquisite corpse show at GroundSwell gallery in Denver. Sara Guindon started it, then mailed the left side to me and the right side to Chris to complete.

Burnaby Art Gallery

I have a new show that's currently up at the Bob Prittie Library in Metrotown (British Columbia), presented by the Burnaby Art Gallery Outreach Program. It runs from April 22 to July 8. This is my first show in BC, and it includes all thirteen drawings that I completed over the past winter. All are investigations of various self-contained flora, ranging from wild to man-made arrangements, including four drawings that depict the japanese art of Kokedama (suspended string gardens). I updated my website recently. I put up all the new drawings I've been working on over the winter, that will be exhibited in an upcoming show with the Burnaby Art Gallery outreach program in Burnaby, BC (I'll post the info for that soon). I also put up the three new silkscreens from last year, all the illustrations I did in the fall for my friend Jeremy's book, uploaded larger versions of most of my silkscreens, and updated my shop section. Here are two of my new drawings. The originals will be available for purchase after the show is over.

I'm lucky to have a number of attractive small parks within a few blocks of my place, then a little further if willing to treck uphill there's the mountain and the two cemeteries (see last photo). In the first photo you can see what I call the moat park where there's a little circular ice rink lit up at night with christmas lights. I usually end up going skating there just once a year, but haven't gone yet this year.

Here's a tour of my neighborhood after the rare sort of glorious snow-fall that coats every single available surface for a brief few hours until it melts away. This is the one day per year of eastern-Canada winter that I actually enjoy. More photos to come.

The Year Ahead

For the past couple years around this time I make my resolutions in the form of a master plan for the upcoming year, covering everything from professional art to travel, reading, financial goals and more. There's something in my genetics that entails a love of spreadsheets and I find that writing it all down and checking back periodically keeps me somewhat focused on all (some) of these things. This winter I'm working on new work for a show at a public gallery, but I'm also hoping to start learning some new crafts* and keeping up my self-education when it comes to horticulture, ecology and sustainable living. When the winter is over I might have a big geographical life change but this is still in the planning stage.

*Crafts: I'm particularly interested in knitting, crocheting, rug hooking, embroidery, cross stitch, and quilting, and so far I can ... knit a scarf, so I have a long way to go.

Below are some progress photos, and I'm still posting day to day photos like these on my tumblr. I hope to have more moments like the one in the photo above in the coming year.

This is one of the images that I drew for Jeremy Latta's novel: Meteorite. It's a noir mystery set in post-war Kingston. I did six drawings, and this one I'm especially happy with. (Click on the image to see it bigger). I will have more information and images when the book is ready.

Here are some photos from the launch last night. It was a great success and a thoroughly enjoyable evening for me (considering how nervous these solo events make me). I want to thank all of my amazing friends for coming out, buying books, helping with food (Sahra and Molly), and bringing gifts and flowers (Sam, Sacha, Veronica, Raf and Michael). Also the staff of D & Q are so very amazing for all attending the evening, providing wine and posters, and of course for giving me this amazing opportunity to begin with. I'm feeling very fortunate these days.

I recently received a copy of my book and I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. The detail is excellent and all the lines are all there (always a concern). The pages have a really nice matteness to them. The embossing on the cover looks great. Copies will be in stores in mid May.

My launch is scheduled for May 18th at 7pm at the Drawn & Quarterly Bookstore, 211 Bernard West in Montreal. There will be wine and snacks and hopefully a nice window display.

A few years ago I used to sell my artwork at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition. As a result, I have some of my own work in professional frames either hiding out or on display in various spots in my apartment. Since moving to a smaller apartment I've been trying to figure out a way to find new homes for these prints. After much internal hemming and hawing, I've decided to list them for sale on my website. I've listed these with a nice low combined shipping and framing cost (if you're located in Canada or the US). The frames are really beautiful, with stained black wood, you can see the wood grain through the black (except for the ghost print, that one has a slightly different frame). The prints are floated and inset, in a shallow shadow box.

There's nothing quite like the poppy. (Except for maybe ranunculus, which is like several poppies in one). I might try to grow some in pots this summer, even though I would need one large pot per poppy, which would impact my minimal balcony space, and each bloom will be fleeting. But maybe if I combine creatively with other things it will be worth it. I might also do more flower portraits like this.

I wanted to post a couple of objects of fine craftsmanship given to me recently by my very talented friend Samantha Purdy (of PinPals fame). The first is a pixel cat throw pillow that she gave me for my birthday (modelled on my cat), and the second a charming pot holder that was one of her trial versions. These are the kinds of embroidery and patchwork crafts she's making these days under the name of Maudstitch. You can see her goods in her etsy store or in select shops, such as General 54 in Montreal. They recently profiled her on their blog.
She blogs at pinpals and has the best tumblr.

Winter Bulbs

After years of forgetting, I finally got my hands on some hyacinth bulbs last fall, for indoor blooming this winter. Results were a little mixed, one bulb didn't grow, one is a little stunted, some are growing sideways, and they all seem to be growing at different rates, but all in all pretty nice to have around. I've been doing a lot of horticultural research this winter, and this has been impacting what I've been drawing. Not that this is really anything new but I seem to be getting deeper into the subject in all kind of ways.

Timeraiser Montreal

The first Montreal Timeraiser is coming up on Thursday, April 12th. I've long been keeping my eye out for Timeraiser to make its Montreal debut. At this event the public can bid volunteer hours in exchange for the artwork of local, emerging artists. The winning bidders have a year to finish their volunteer hours and then they get to take the work home. The artists are paid market value for their work upfront, so everyone wins.
I submitted some framed silkscreens that I have on hand and the Timeraiser jury selected my piece 'Hillock':
