The annual Stratford upon Avon Regatta took place last weekend and the results platform designed by Ambition Design was successfully used to record the results of each race.

The software has been in development for several years and is now approaching its finished state with all the major functionality required now incorporated in the system. The system can be used for any two lane regattas or for head races and includes a touch screen optimised website to enable the starting of events on a mobile platform, such as an iPhone.

The public results pages have undergone a dramatic redevelopment this year, with a completely new user interface that has been designed to simplify the finding of results for specific races, events, or clubs. You can view the public results page at: results.regattaweb.co.uk.

If you would like further information on the Regattaweb system, or would like to use it at your event please get in touch.

Last week I finally finished my university degree in mechanical engineering at Oxford Brookes. It’s been five years in the making and think I’ve learnt a lot in the process. Without a doubt though the most useful aspect of the degree was doing a years placement with an engineering company. I learnt much more about practical engineering during this year than at any time during the rest of the four year masters course.

The masters part of the course covered aspects that were more likely to be used in a real world engineering project. In some ways we were just left to get on with the project which was whilst very rewarding was stressful at the same time. The increased stress levels were due to having to prioritise the tasks whilst ensuring that the overall project would be completed on time. As with most projects the last few weeks were fairly hectic, and required juggling of revision and completion of the projects.

How does it feel now it’s all finished?

To be honest I’m not sure it’s sunk in yet that I have finished. Last week I was working pretty hard to get a new project finished, I’ll being writing about it in the next few weeks once everything is finalised. So I haven’t had much time to contemplate things; I’m having the next few days completely off, so will hopefully be able to reflect a bit more then.

So here’s the million dollar question, was the last 5 years and in excess of £30,000 worthwhile?

In general I would say it was a worthwhile experience. A lot of the knowledge gained over the cause could be learnt ‘on the job’ but it is unlikely that I would have come out with as broad a knowledge of engineering as I have got from university. This lack of breadth could have limited chances for career development in the future. Securing a job before finishing the course I think justifies the degree, and the placement year especially as it equipped me with the skills and knowledge to portray myself above a very strong field at the assessment centre.

What does the future hold?

This summer will revolve around doing some web design work, holidays and relaxing. The job in starts in early september in Bristol, so I will also have to find a base there at some point over the summer. From then onwards I will begin a new phase of my life as a working man! God help us all!!

This week we tried part 2 of the new weights program, this time focusing on the lower body. This again comprised of three sets of exercises; the first set involved back squats supersetted with power cleans. Four lots of 15 reps were completed back to back. I managed ok with the squats, but struggled slightly with the cleans, having not done any for over a year.
The following exercises were front squats supersetted with reverse lunges. Front squats were done instead of leg press as we did not have a leg press machine available. 20 lunges were completed on each leg immediately after completing the squats. I struggled with the front squats on this exercise as I couldn’t get my wrists to bend back on themselves as much as they needed, hence it was quite difficult to keep hold of the bar.
The final set of exercises were straight leg dead lift supersetted with leg curls on a swiss ball. We kept the weight reasonably light on the dead lift as neither of us has done much back strengthening previously. I found both of the final exercises to be fairly comfortable, so will be putting the weight up next week.
A few days after the first session and I am in less pain than I was for the upper body circuit, but still enough to know that I have done something!
I’ll report back in a few weeks on my progress, hopefully significantly bigger.

On Tuesday I started a new weights program with a friend of mine. Unfortunately for me he is now a full time professional athlete. Me being me I tried to keep up with him, but now I’m paying the price!

The session started off with some pull ups supersetted with inversed rowing. There were 4 sets of 12 reps for each of the exercises. I was struggling to lift my excessive weight on the pull ups after the first set, so had to endure a fair amount of mocking!
The following exercises were bench press supersetted with dumbell flys. I seemed to manage ok with the bench press, but the flys got a bit tricky to pick up and then press on the third and forth sets.

The final round was bench pulls and tricep dips. Again I managed ok with the pulls but really struggled with the dips. So I had to endure more mocking whilst I did baby dips off a chair.

Typically the full pain following a weights session is not experienced until 2 days after the event. I knew this was going to be bad when I could hardly move my arms straight after the session! Two days after and I can hardly straighten my arms out, and curling them up is even worse. Hopefully it will get better soon.

Coming up soon, part 2 : lower body workout!

On Sunday I attempted to play squash again for the first time in about four years. I think it’s fair to say my body is now regretting the decision.

We got the rules slightly wrong, thinking that the points were up to 21 rather than 9 so having played 5 games of the best of 21 my body was understandably achey!! It was however good to release a bit of anger on a piece of rubber, and I’m looking forward to playing again soon. Hopefully next time I won’t get hit in the middle of my back! The bruise is the size of a tennis ball, although I suppose I can only blame myself for not getting out of the way quick enough.

So in conclusion I think that squash is friend rather than foe, it’s just going to take a few attempts for my muscles to become use to it. BRING IT ON!

The big race went ahead on the 25th April. The weather was really nice, it was a little bit drizzly at the beginning of the day, but then got gradually hotter and hotter. I was almost too hot by the end of the race, but thankfully the water stations were positioned just in the right places.

The start of the race was quite slow, the people traffic was quite annoying. I couldn’t really get up to speed until about a mile in. After that though all felt pretty good, until I hit the 9 mile mark…

My legs just felt dead and I started to regret the amount of training that I had done the previous week. I recon in those last 4 miles I lost about 5 minutes, which was really quite annoying. Still managed to complete the course and considerably quicker than last time I attempted it (about 15 minutes!).

The challenge now is what to do next!!! I’m just going maintain my fitness by running and cycling for a while, until the end of University at least. Then who knows…..

Week 12 – Build up!

So the big build up has been and gone. It’s taken me a while to get this up, just been so busy.

I guess my build up was a little bit too heavy… here goes;

Monday – Easy 4 miles; 4.11miles @ 8:17 min/mile avg

Tuesday – 10x400m; 5.41miles @ 8:02 min/mile avg

Thursday – Brisk 3 miles; 5miles @ 7:52 min/mile avg

Friday – Brisk 4 miles; 3.92miles @ 7:38 min/mile avg

As you can see the milage was quite a bit more than normal. I think I probably paid for this in the last bit of the race. Check out the next blog for a detailed run down of the race…
