Biography

Born in Paris in 1972, Ambroise graduated from the Applied Arts School of Vevey, Switerland in 1994. First based in London and then in Paris, he was a member of Editing agency from 2000 untill 2002. From 2002, Ambroise Tézenas has essentially devoted his time to the creation of a personnal work on landscapes. In 2004, he co-founded the association of independent photographers Think Pictures.

His work produced in Beijing from 2001 to2005, witnessing the changes happening in Beijing before hosting the Olympics, won the Leica European Publisher’s Award. It was published in five languages ans is now in its second edition.

Simone Lueck is a Los Angeles based photographer originally from St. Paul, Minnesota. Her work is inspired by Old Hollywood, cultural icons and faded glamour; it is marked by an interest in looking at an American cultural territory colored by notions of identity and performance. Simone's first book Cuba TV was published in August by Mark Batty Publishers, Random House. It was accompanied by solo shows at Kopeikin Gallery (Culver City) and Clic Gallery (NY). Simone's recently completed body of work, The Once and Future Queens, features older women posing as glamorous movie stars. The series has been exhibited internationally in solo shows at Kopeikin Gallery (Culver City), Musée de la Photographie (Charleroi, Belgium), and it is currently up at Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool) in a show curated by Martin Parr.

For more than twenty years, Richard Misrach has been photographing the American desert, revealing a complex landscape that is as captivating as it is mysterious.Through his numerous cantos's [groups of pictures] Misrach has created one of the most extensive projects in contemporary photography.

For most people, the desert defines itself as a place where little happens, except the occasional glimpse of tumbleweed blowing across the sand. There are no movie theaters, coffee shops, malls or cars. There are no visible towns for miles and few noises, except the sound of your own breathing. In Misrach's desert, the land vibrates with underground nuclear testing and the sky illuminates with radiation seeping into the atmosphere, creating fantastic colors at every glance.

Whether photographing a flooded town, a desert fire, an abandoned nuclear test site or the colors on the horizon emanating from a small town miles away, Richard Misrach draws the viewer into his world through his mastery of color. Ranging from beautiful lakes to secret military bunkers to speed racing on the Utah salt flats, Misrach's work chronicles mans involvement in the desert, while always paying homage to the intrinsic beauty provided by nature. It's through beauty that Misrach's social concerns are most revealed. By pulling the viewer into a glowing light or calm body of water, he presents situations which leave us asking questions about the American desert -- a desert which continues to heal and revive itself regardless of mans actions.

Rafal Milach is a documentary photographer based in Warsaw, Poland. He graduated Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland and ITF in Opava, Czech Republic. For more than 10 years he has been working on transition issues in Russian speaking countries and CEE region. This work resulted with the book called 7 Rooms (Kehrer Verlag 2011) and such essays as The Grey (2002), Wunderland (2006) or Black Sea of Concrete (2009). Rafal’s photos were exhibited in MoCA Shanghai and are the part of collection of Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Art in Japan. They have been also presented within Photoespana, Look3, Rencontres Photogrphiques d’Arles. In 2007 Rafal took part in Joop Swart Masterclass run by World Press Photo Foundation. Within next 3 years he received stipends from Polish Ministry of Culture, European Cultural Foundaion and Visegrad Fund. His Pictures have been awarded in World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year International, Photography Book Now and New York Photo Festival Awards.
In 2006 together with 10 other Central Eastern European photographers, Rafal created a photo collective Sputnik Photos,, to document, promote and spread knowledge on transition issues in CEE countries. Bathtubs, couples, love and challenge are strong themes throughout this artist’s work with other key elements including individuality, style, communication and intimacy.
Photographer Hal brings complete strangers to his confined, crucible like spaces only to convey his continuing theme of ‘love of the couple’. The initial title Pinky & Killer used a small space or room to capture the willing couples, soon followed by the title Couple Jam which brought the focus even closer to the subjects who were placed in a bathtub together. “I am currently seeking new dimensions in portrait photography by challenging the majestic theme of mankind, defined through love.” Photographer Hal’s latest project is called Fresh Love, which captures the many varied and fresh couples in vacuum sealed package.

“Living through my university days I was starving for encounters with different people from other cultures around the world. As soon as I had the opportunity I left Japan and began my travels with a special focus on the Middle East and India. It was here that I first became aware of my passion for photography. The camera became the key to overcoming shyness and limited local language abilities and I could in some way communicate with the people I met.
After graduating from university I joined an advertising production company in Tokyo and this enabled me to acquire a much wider set of photographic skills. The assignments were varied and unique including celebrities and established fashion icons. It was the crucible of my technical ability and the focus in my work soon became the people.

Matthew Baum is a photographer and teacher living in Brooklyn, NY. He graduated from Brown University in 1996 with a degree in history and later studied architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Matthew earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Photography, Video and Related Media in May 2007. Upon graduation, he was awarded Chairman's Honors and the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award.

Matthew was a founder and co-director of the VisuaLife photo education program, working with underprivileged youth in New York City. His work has been exhibited nationally and seen in publications such as the New York Times Magazine and Photo District News. Recent exhibitions include "Photo Now" at the Center for Photography at Woodstock and "Visual Morphology" at the Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. He currently teaches at the School of Visual Arts and Hunter College.

I'm 25 and 6 years ago I was employed at the Venice airport, observing thousands people travelling all over the world in the meantime every day.

I felt that each one of them was keeping his own story, and I was near to so many different hopes,past and feautures, some of those passengers told me in few words about that.

Asking to myself which was the best way to tell stories, I realized that the photography was the right one, my way.I left Venice to embark a photograph master in Padua.

In the meantime I started to travel, driven by the desire to know.

Now I live in Milan continuing to seek life stories that can make us think, stories that could start questions for a better understanding of the world where I lived my 25 years of life.

Photography and video are the pens i use to write down and fix my stories.

Nicolas Dhervillers, 1981, France, is a photographer that keeps fooling it's viewers. What appears as reality is actually a fabricated reality. In his series Tourist he has taken night pictures of remote places in which he relights certain parts creating "non-places". He then went on the internet searching for the most banal holiday snap possible. He combines the two images letting the people be tourists in his images. In the series Préfiguration, Nicolas photographed visitors in the Pompidou Centre in Paris and put them into spaces of the building site of the future Pompidou Centre in Metz. «For a Swiss, I am a Japanese and for a Japanese I am a Swiss or rather a gaijin.»

My name is David «Takashi» Favrod. I was born on the 2nd of July 1982 in Kobe, Japan, of a Japanese mother and a Swiss father. When I was 6 months old, my parents decided to come and live in Switzerland, more precisely in Vionnaz, a little village in lower Valais. As my father had to travel for his work a lot, I was mainly brought up by my mother who taught me her principles and her culture.
When I was 18, I asked for double nationality at the Japanese embassy, but they refused, because it is only given to Japanese women who wish to obtain their husband’s nationality.
It is from this feeling of rejection and also from a desire to prove that I am as Japanese as I am Swiss that this work was created. “Gaijin” is a fictional narrative, a tool for my quest for identity, where self-portraits imply an intimate and solitary relationship that I have with myself. The mirror image is frozen in a figurative alter ego that serves as an anchor point.
The aim of this work is to create “my own Japan”, in Switzerland, from memories of my journeys when I was small, my mother’s stories, popular and traditional culture and my grandparents war narratives.

Sabina Hannila is a Swedish photographer who currently lives and study at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham. After the University she wants to be a photojournalist exploring people and their personal stories.
Photographic project explain:
In the 1500s, a man called Nostradamus was born in France. He predicated that in the year of 2012 the earth and the life would be destroyed by a comet. This was backed up by the Maya peolpe and their Long Count Calendar, wich ends in the year 2012. It was never started, however, in their calendar that the world is going to end completely, but that world as we know it now will come to an end and a new beginning shall take form. Peolpe have interpreted this in many ways, and the most popular one is that of the Apocalypse; this has also been backed up by scientists that claim that a magnetic pole shift is about to happen around this time this year., wich will cause massive earthquake and tsunamis all over the world. People around the world are preparing for the Apocalypse by building bunkers and stocking up food as well as collecting survival gear. There is one group of people, however, that has taken these predictions in a slightly different manner. The Lightwalkers are a universal group of people who believe that 2012 is the year for positive change in humanity:”we will be enlightened rather than extinguished”. They believe that they were chosen, before birth, to save humanity from all its fears by, during the time of sleep, let their spirits leave their earthly bodies and travel up to our universe and together send positive thoughts through space. By doing so they hope to create positive energy rather than negative, and therefore awaken people’s spiritual self.

For the past three years Katy Grannan has roamed the streets of Los Angeles and San Francisco, photographing strangers. Her subjects are most often people whom others pass by without notice, anonymous individuals who have now been transformed by photography’s peculiar magic.
Grannan photographs her subjects in front of the type of white stucco walls that can be found anywhere. She works midday when the strong noon light, in tandem with the white walls, transforms her city streets into outdoor studios. The light is precise and indiscriminate, delineating in high-pitched detail Grannan’s hustlers, strutters, addicts and beauty queens. The timeless characters who populate Grannan’s Boulevards are a compendium of street types rendered with mesmerizing intensity, separated from their counterparts of past centuries by little more than costume or hairstyle.
Katy Grannan lives and works in Berkeley. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.
Boulevard is accompanied by an illustrated catalog published by Fraenkel Gallery and Salon 94, New York. This is Katy Grannan’s third solo exhibition at Fraenkel Gallery.

Tommaso Fiscaletti was born in Cattolica (RN) in 1981. Lives and works in Milan as a photographer for the publishing and the adv, working assiduously to personal projects.

In 2001, he began to work as a photographer in a studio and also does reportage in North Africa and Eastern Europe. A few years after his work evolves in a different language, which tries to speak about the Man in relation to the Environment in which he lives and the Nature. Through portraits and landscapes, the need is to highlight the inherent reality to a deeper level. He searches for answers starting right from himself, from his affections, through projects such as "All Over Me" and "Suspended intimacy." Here the intent is to decipher, through photography, the complex structure of relationships between people. The staging and the drama are aimed at understanding the characters, often relatives or friends. In his work is very evident that the Man was at a certain point in having to deal with Nature. The magnificence of it can become the tool for reflection and also the only true inner refuge, as in "Landscape of a possible condition", "Mute" or "The Missing Part".

His work has been exhibited in various exhibitions and fairs in the field of art, both in Italy and abroad and has won several awards. In 2011, he founded along with Alice Marrollo "LeaFlood", to carry out projects that arise from the constant comparison between the two.

What images represent typically American sceneries? The starting point for the photo series 'The Great Unreal', a project on which the two photographers from Zurich worked from 2005 to 2009, was a scholarship from the City of Zurich. This scholarship allowed the two men to work in New York for a year. From New York, they made numerous trips through the country. Fascinated by the seemingly endless landscapes, they strove to connect the mythological 'America' pictures in our heads with the everyday images that they encountered on the roadside. Nico Krebs and Taiyo Onorato, who completed their degree in photography at the ZHdK in 2005 and who have been working together since 2003, built models and used illusion tricks of the type known from Hollywood movies. In the background of one photograph, caravans can be seen, loosely grouped to form a settlement, and next to them giant cacti, palm trees and telephone masts. A typical 'American' picture bathed in atmospheric light of the type we seem to recall from films. But in the foreground, there is a gaping abyss which fills the entire lower quarter of the picture ('Abyss'). In addition to such fabricated images, in which reality is combined with models, the photographer duo has decided to also include a series of 'straight' images which are not 'faked' in any way. The effect is astounding: all of a sudden, one does not trust the 'real' pictures anymore, thinks that they too are artificial and fabricated, and this is what the title 'The Great Unreal' alludes to. A highway weaving its way through several rolling hills seems to stretch out into the barren landscape endlessly ('Map'): is this how the view presented itself to the photographers, or did they construct it as a model? In some pictures, the duo reveals its trick box: the model of a country road is seen sitting on a tripod in front of a mountainous country road. Viewers experience particular pleasure when the photographers thus reveal their playful approach to reality and fiction. The photography book 'The Great Unreal' was published by Edition Patrick Frey in 2009.

Born in London in 1975, Charlie Crane has been an advertising and editorial photographer since he was 20, photographing campaigns for Sony and Ford. Editorial clients include the New York Times Magazine and W.
His work has been widely exhibited, including several pieces at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and honors include a Kodak Gold Award for portrait photography.

In 2007, Crane had work on display at Bloomberg New Contemporaries, was the winner of the IPA Lucie’s Deeper Perspective award, was included in 2007’s Flash Forward Emerging Photographers and published a book titled Welcome to Pyongyang (Chris Boot Publisher).

Crane is currently living and working in London.

Jon Horvath is an artist and educator residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2008. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries including: The Print Center (Philadelphia), Macy Gallery at Columbia University (New York), and IHC Platform Gallery at UC-Santa Barbara. Horvath was a finalist for the The Greater Milwaukee Foundation's 2009 and 2010 Mary L. Nohl Emerging Artist Fellowship. In 2010, Horvath was the recipient of the Julie Jensen Bryan and Robert Bryan Philadelphia Museum of Art Purchase Award. In 2011, he was named a US Flash Forward winner by The Magenta Foundation. Horvath currently teaches at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.

Wide Eyed departs from a reactionary response to my surroundings, grounded in a sense of wonder and awe. It is approached with the spirit of the wanderer and emphasizes democracy within the project structure. Wide Eyed persists as the undercurrent of my entire photographic process, bridging the gaps between more pointed investigations. As a result, this project avoids specificity in content and conceptual motivations. Rather, it functions more analogously to an archive, a database, a repository for meditations, glimpses and passing thoughts about my relationship to anything I may encounter. Wide Eyed is intended to be a breathing body of images; a space to bounce and veer and double back while maintaining the sensation of being in a place of familiarity without specificity.

One morning in 2005 I woke and, with a sudden immediacy, feared the fragility of things. What if tomorrow someone close died? In an ideal world, my family will always be there. But they won’t, at least not in a physical sense. I needed to hold on and photograph those transient moments of intimacy shared only between us, yet common to most. I needed to investigate what is ultimately the centre stage of my life, and to explore the complexities and challenges of family love. Was there such a thing as family identity? What constitutes belonging? That morning, Near was born – it is an ongoing portrait of my family.

Our story is common to the 21st Century – we're spread across four countries and three continents, torn apart and thrown together by migration. We are architects, engineers, social workers, therapists, dancers, animators, carpenters, students and dreamers. We are divorced, we are married, we are old and young and everything in between. Above all, we're lucky – we are close. Together, we've come through cancer and suicide.

Celebrating the significance of that which is close, Near is inspired by a deep curiosity in what we often brush aside as banal or ordinary.

The work pays tribute to the idea that in the end, we belong to people, rather than places or things. We belong to the stories we compose, and hold close.

Thirteen:Twenty Lacuna

I have a never ending love affair with the hustle and happenings of the city centre, and an obsession over what happens when strangers are thrown together in close proximity.

Once, while venturing through the city in search for faces and light, I came across this place in the Melbourne CBD. Light reaches it directly for only 20 minutes a day, around lunchtime, when people rush away from work to get sandwiches and coffees.
During these few minutes, a transformation happens
– faces are illuminated, dust twirls through rays of
sun, cigarette smoke becomes an almost glistening silver- blue against dark buildings. You can hear snippets of conversation and laughter between friends, and sometimes the muffled tum-tum of an iPod as if
to draw attention to the lack of interaction between strangers. It's a 'mis-en-scene', a theatre stage on which people become my protagonists for an instant.

Thirteen:Twenty Lacuna captures tiny moments of us
– strangers – passing each other by unnoticed. We stare ahead, buried in thought. There is a fragile beauty in our distant gazes - as if inside, we were hanging on to something out of reach to anyone else, sacred only to us.
