Lincoln’s Bible (aka LB), host of the podcast “The World Beneath,” joins us to talk about how Facebook can take the most trivial information you give them, and use it to introduce you to conspiracies and worse; how Russia is the first modern mob state; and how more Americans—and specifically, Republicans—are compromised than you think. It was a fascinating, and somewhat scary, discussion. Cliff and I close the show with a chat about the breaking news that AT&T helped inspire, and is the major funder of, far-right pro-Trump propaganda network, One American News (OAN).

Donald Trump’s niece, Mary, returns to talk about her new book, “The Reckoning: our nation’s trauma and finding a way to heal.”

Among the topics Mary discusses with us: Don Jr’s intelligence; Ivanka ego; her recent slapdown of Meghan McCain; why Dems should be more outspoken about gun control, voting rights, and abortion; expanding the Supreme Court; standing up to Joe Manchin, and the relative lack of Democratic messaging and backbone.

It was a fun chat, as always, with Mary — she’s a very interesting and fun person.

You can watch a Zoom video version of the podcast below, and/or just an audio version — your choice.

Dixon has a new book out about the history of DADT, “Mission Possible: The Story of Repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Dixon and I talk about the history of the gay ban, going back to the early 1900s, the adoption and implementation of DADT under President Clinton, and its ultimate repeal under President Obama. And finally, we close with a discussion of lessons learned that other movements can take away from the successful fight to repeal the gay ban.

In his captivating memoir, famed sex columnist Alexander Cheves details his childhood as the football-playing son of evangelical Christians, growing up on a farm and doing missionary work. There are the universal queer experiences of adolescent sexual experimentation, unrequited crushes, and the fear of being exposed. But those are the calm parts of the roller coaster just before your wig hits those behind you, soars out of the park and gets flattened by a Mack truck.

Cheves takes us on an unforgettable, hedonistic journey through Savannah, Atlanta, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City. Kink is his passion, his livelihood (both as a writer and a sex worker), and even his religion—and it’s hard to imagine a more effective evangelist.

While there are a lot of very descriptive sex acts in this book, the intimacy lies in the author’s unflinching, masterful storytelling. You feel you’re on the next pillow as he bares his soul and shares his profound convictions and observations. Cheves is a millennial, but demonstrates a deep understanding of the generations before him. Who they are and how they were shaped. He also recognizes the unique moment in which he finds himself, at the dawning sexual revolution after decades of fear. His is a generation that recognizes the limits of labels, as the rigid LG and to a lesser extent B are declining in relevance with the rise of the T and the flexible Q. While he only writes of having sex with men, he has had opposite sex attraction and shares his regrets about not feeling he was permitted to explore those desires. And while he immerses us in a gay man’s world, he comfortably shares anecdotes of kink scenes involving more than one gender. In many ways Cheves is of his generation, but this hardcore memoir certainly flies in the face of the sanitized mores of his contemporaries.

An important message from Occupy Democrats about the California Recall Election:

You may have heard a little something about the California recall election against Governor Gavin Newsom, but did you know that there’s a very real possibility that the state might flip to a Republican governor?

That’s right. If Republicans win this recall, here’s what the GOP will roll back progress on:

– Climate change

– Covid-19/Vaccinatio

– Gun safety

– Healthcare

– Education

– Reproductive rights.

If we let Republicans take the highest office in the most powerful state in the country, who knows what else they’ll come after next.

That’s why we are putting together a key group of activists that will help get the word out on every digital platform available. We need 1,992 Americans to stand up and help us get there before the deadline. Can you chip in $8 right now?

We’re teaming up with other organizations to help get the word out and tell Californians “Vote NO” on the recall. While others will be focused on mail and TV ads, Occupy Democrats Election Fund is focused on a digital outreach campaign across multiple social platforms to urge Californians to vote NO in the recall election.

Occupy Democrats has over 10 million supporters on Facebook alone. We have the largest GOTV platform of any Democratic super PAC. Help us activate our network of influencers across platforms and ensure Gavin Newsom remains Governor.

Texas has pretty much just banned all abortions in the state, and the US Supreme Court has, so far, refused to step in BY ONE SINGLE VOTE.

Texas just enacted a ban on all abortions after six weeks — which is pretty much a ban on abortion, period, as most women don’t even know they’re pregnant at six weeks. The law provides for no exceptions for rape or incest.

Let me walk you through just how bad this new law is. And if you prefer to watch a video explainer, I did these two videos over on TikTok: Part 1; Part 2.

So, in a nutshell, Texas just passed a law that bans abortions after six weeks — under Roe v. Wade, you generally can’t ban abortions before 22 to 24 weeks — and rather than have the state enforce the law, they empower private citizens as anti-choice vigilantes.

Under the law, any Texan can sue anyone who “aids and abets” an abortion, other than the woman having the abortion herself. So this means any Joe-blow in Texas — literally anyone, they need no relation to you at all — can sue the doctor performing the abortion, and his staff. But the language is so intentionally vague and broad — anyone aiding and abetting the abortion — that the law also could cover your Uber driver who brought you to the clinic, the credit card company that processed your payment for the procedure, anyone who provided you the money for the procedure, and really anyone who aided you in any way (a car ride, advice, someone who recommended the doctor in question, a GoFundMe page that helps pay for the procedure, anyone or any service that raises money for Planned Parenthood, etc.)

If the person suing wins, they get $10,000, and the person they’re suing has to pay their legal fees. If the defendant, the person they sue, wins, they don’t get anything (not even legal fees). The intent of the legislation is to not only make abortion 100% illegal, but to scare anyone in the state from even saying anything openly supportive of the right to choose.

You can read the rest of this story over at my newsletter, CyberDisobedience.

Today’s guest on the UnPresidented podcast is Dr. Chethen Sathya, a pediatric trauma surgeon who is the Director of the Gun Violence Prevention Center at Northwell Health, the largest system of hospitals and outpatient clinics in New York.

Northwell is doing a big push on gun violence prevention, highlighted by fighting for funds in the infrastructure bill that go to gun violence prevention programs like the one at Northwell.

As we’re not seeing a spike in crime so much as a spike in gun crime right now, Dr. Sathya is a perfect guest to discuss what Northwell’s doing, what we all should be doing, why the US is unique among high income countries, and the financial, personal and emotional cost of this scourge. And afterwards, we talk about the latest on Afghanistan and Covid.

In today’s UnPresidented podcast we talk about Afghanistan.

Is Biden to Blame? Trump? Was it really not predictable that Kabul would fall this quickly? And what about the interpreters and the embassy staff — why weren’t contingencies made for them in advance?

Cliff and I don’t blame Biden for the mess overall — the US lost this war long ago, and it was time to leave. But Biden is responsible for “how” we left. And did he do as good a job as he could have?

On today’s show, Cliff and I delve into the news that Rand Paul’s wife secretly bought stocks in a drug company way back in February of 2020, and Paul failed to report it for 16 months. And it just so happens that the pharmaceutical company, Gilead, makes the Covid treatment drug Remdesivir. At the time his wife bought the drug, Rand Paul, as a member of Congress, was receiving secret Covid briefings that the rest of us weren’t privy to. He knew what was coming, we didn’t. And his wife invested in the drug that would be needed to help fight the pandemic. All just a big coincidence, right Rand?

Then we get into the latest on the Covid-denialists. And finally, a chat about the ongoing slow-motion coup attempt by Trump, Mike Lindell and more.

There’s a cryptocurrency controversy brewing in the Infrastructure bill, and it’s kind of an unnecessary mess. I just wrote about it in my newsletter, CyberDisobedience, but in a nutshell, Biden is supporting language that doesn’t make any sense, and hurts the environment. It favors energy-inefficient crypto like Bitcoin, while harming energy-efficient coins like Ether (Ethereum).

It’s a long and complicated topic, but the fix is pretty easy. So why won’t Biden fix it? Because doing so might mess up an accounting gimmick he’s using to pay for a small portion of the overall infrastructure bill.

I think I did a pretty good job of explaining the problem in a way that’s easy to understand. Here’s a snippet:

Biden’s position will worsen the environmental impact of crypto by de-incentivizing more energy-efficient currencies. You may recall that in the last few months there’s been a lot of concern over Bitcoin being super energy-intensive. Well, the “compromise” bill language (drafted by Senators Sinema, Warner and Portman) that the White House is pushing will punish currencies like Ether (Ethereum) that are potentially 11,000 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin, while giving Bitcoin a pass!

Another concern of people who know crypto much better than I, like Mark Cuban, is that the White House language will stymie innovation on the cryptocurrency blockchain. Very complicated, but think of it like the early Internet. Whatever your position on it, and where it’s heading, you don’t want to get the rules wrong.

Having worked in the Senate, I know that when money comes into play, the substance goes out the window. The fact that fixing the crypto language in the Infrastructure bill could cause CBO to claim that the bill brings in less tax revenue — when CBO is already saying the bill won’t pay for itself — is enough to get the White House to simply throw good sense out the window, and keep even bad language if it helps sell the bill as paying for itself.

Considering this is Congress’ first big effort at regulating the Cryptocurrency industry, it would have been nice to get it right.

On today’s UnPresidented podcast, we look into the Ohio special election for the open House seat there, and whether Nina Turner losing to Shontel Brown has any larger meaning. We then have a lengthy discussion about Fox News’ Tucker Carlson spending a week in Hungary trying to convince his audience that autocracy rocks. And we wrap up with an update on the latest with Covid, including the coming disaster in Florida under Republican Governor Ron DeSantis, who has failed to treat the pandemic seriously from day one, in an effort to woo Trump votes for his 2024 presidential run.
