Instead of creating a dedicated garden in your yard. Just plant a few herbs or vegetables in the flower pots posted on top of iron plant stakes.

The benefits:

Elevated. Keeps small critters from digging up your plants and ruining precious growing food. Additionally, this works great for those with back or knee problems. Eliminate bending over or down for a few ingredients to that days meal.

Contained. Using this combination for a small garden keep out many weeds and growth issues. You won’t have to worry about the rampant weeds during the summer because it will be contained from the soil with weed seeds or roots that aren’t removed. Also, the growth will be contained to the area used for the flower pot. At times you want to contain your plants because you don’t have enough room for your plants to go wild.

Small. While small is not always a bad thing, this combo allows you to have a herb and veegtable garden without using dedicated space for a garden. You can just stake the pots into your landscaping, near a walkway, next to a porch or alongside a fence.

Durable. The combination of the plastic pot and the iron stake make for a durable pair. The two are very stable in their place when properly positioned. You can stake them down and not worry until the end of summer.

Use the flower pot and plant stake to make your simple garden a reality. Often we say a garden is too much work or not enough space for growing herbs or vegetables. Now you can forget about excuses and go buy seed and soil for your new garden.

Winter Herb Garden

The Post Flower Pot and the wrought iron Pot Plant Stand make for an excellent herb garden any time of the year. But why not use it now during the winter months?

During the winter months, plants need less water because growth either ceases or slows to a crawl. If you live in a cold climate you can still have some growth from your herbs for cooking. If you live in the southern states of America or a warming climate year round, then an herb garden inside is even more ideal as you will have more sunlight for plant growth. Keep in mind, many southern states still get snow or frost, even Florida and Louisiana. It is essential, no matter where you live, to bring your pants indoors or at least have protected.

The Post Flower Pot has holes for drainage in the bottom of the planter. During the winter months it will be crucial to bring these pots inside, however, you may not need to plug those holes or have drainage trays. If you water lightly and regularly, you can keep your plants very happy. Remember, one of the biggest mistakes is over watering.

The combination of the Post Flower Pot and the Iron Plant Stand can make your transition from fall to winter an easy one. As well as bringing those plants outside in the transition to spring.

The winter herb garden will need to be placed in a window facing the Southern sky as it will receive the most sun (if you live in the Northern hemisphere). Not having your plants facing the Southern sky may lead to plant failure or zero growth.

Indoor herb gardens will also need some fertilization as the pots cannot receive naturally ocurring nutrients that are usually common in topsoil. Also you will not have the benefit of worms, insects, leaves, grass and other microbial helpers. Some common household scraps can be used for your herb garden or your typical 9-month fertilizer from a nursery will do just fine.

For more specifics on indoor herb garden you can search Google keywords “herbs to grow in the winter” (other keywords may bring up irrelevant commercial products) or visit this website (http://www.emmitsburg.net/gardens/articles/adams/2005/herbs.htm) I found that had much of the necessary information found in most gardening books.

Hope this helps. Let me know what you find in your indoor herb garden ventures.

Indoor Winter Worm and Compost Bed

One absolutely great and ingenious idea that has been in the organic community for a long time is the use of worms in composting every little house scrap. It’s not so much about creating as little waste as possible as it is about getting so much out of your waste.

What you will need

Pot Plant Stand

Flower Pots

Lids (wood, plastic, cardboard, etc.)

Worms (2 cups of red worms)

Dirt (enough for each pot 60% full)

Kitchen Scraps (for a list of acceptable scraps )

Directions:

Place your fence post pots on the three spots of the plant stand. Fill with dirt, soil, nearby topsoil, commercially bagged soil or garden compost. Move some dirt to the side and place a handful (or half cup) of worms in each pot. Cover the worms with a small amount of loose dirt. Cover the plant pots with lids.

Your ready to begin composting.

Begin by adding a small amount of scraps to one container at a time. Try using a pattern of filling in order and with small amounts. Depending on the food type, the worms will eventually rise and eat your food in a few days. Frequently check your compost for moisture, change and odor. Keep your worms happy!

Discussion

Many people don’t realize how much they throw out each year and how much good waste they discard of each day. Typical waste from human consumption could easily fuel one of the richest most effective fertilizers on the planet earth!

Yes, compost is the most powerful, effective and inexpensive means of fertilization. Now maybe it is not number one in every category like the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. However, it does possess the unique distinction of being the best all-around form of fertilization.

This subject is beyond the scope of this article as entire books have been written about composting.

The idea is to use the fence post flower pot in conjunction with the flower pot iron plant stand . This can be done anytime of the year but we are going to focus on the late fall to early spring time, when most people bring their plants indoors or stop growing altogether, the winter months. Depending on where you live, maybe vary the time you do this, but you get the point, we’re trying to make the best use of downtime.

The plant stand can be placed indoors; in your living room, hallway, spare room, kitchen, den, basement or in a foyer. Place it where you are most comfortable having it for this time period but keep in mind that you will be transporting kitchen scraps to it.

Odor

Now some people will ask, what about the smell. The rule here is simple. If you’re doing things correctly, there will be no smell once covered. If there is a horrid smell coming from your indoor compost, you have gone wrong. Most of the time, it is something that should not be placed in the compost, and therefore does not decompose and begins to rot and collect bacteria. If you have trouble with the smell, take note of what you put in the flower pot and throw out the top portion of your compost. If need be, get rid of the entire compost in the flower pot.

The reason plastic is used in this cased is most for durability but also aesthetics.

Getting a locking grip with the ribbed inner wall, your fence post flower pot will stay on securely during high winds. Granted, we’re talking about normal temperate climate winds, not 100 mph tropical rain storms.
