This week a new show is just not in the cards. I was already working with an extremely tight travel schedule – I was supposed to return to Santa Barbara from Boston yesterday, then leave for Vegas on Wednesday. Well, my flights got delayed and overbooked and I had to stay in Boston another night. I literally just got home to SB 15 minutes ago. Before I leave for Vegas in less than 19 hours, I have to respond to work email, do my laundry, check and recharge batteries on all my video gear, and spend as much time as I can with Emma and Kim.

I didn’t want to leave you with nothing so I pulled oen from the vault that you haven’t been able to get for a while. It is Episode #32 of AC. Originally recorded on February 7, 2006, you can see how the show has changed.

Emma’s getting bigger everyday and now that her nanny is at our house, I get to pop my head out my office from time to time and hang out and play with her. It’s been an Earth-shaking kind of day today in Southern California. Just before noon PT we had a magnitude 5.4 quake hit the Los Angeles area. Amazingly, I was reading updates and personal experiences from people on Twitter way before I saw any details on major news outlets. The funniest Tweet had to be from MissRFTC: “I am totally serious. My Ob/Gyn was IN my vagina and an earthquake started rattling the room!” You can’t make this stuff up…

This week I continue to fight a battle with Sprint, their poor coverage and their awful customer service. You can read my take on it at Relevantly Speaking. Other than that, things are going OK. Had a relaxing weekend and managed to see The Dark Knight, which was really good. Now, I’m focused on getting things wrapped up as I prepare for two back to back trips. This week has not been a good one for my websites. Both 8BallRadio and AmericanCliche.net were hacked twice. It appears to be some sort of vulnerability involving Google Analytics and Wordpress, although Brian couldn’t find much information about it. Luckily there wasn’t much damage, but the sites were each down for the better part of a day and a half. For those that had trouble listening to the show, you should be OK now.

The smoke has settled a bit in Santa Barbara and the fire is about 35% contained as I write this (I’d be curious to know how they calculate that statistic actually), but it has consumed almost 10,000 acres with no end in site. Luckily it seems to be moving away from homes in the area.

Quicktime iPod | Windows Media

This is a sobering edition of ACTV. As many of you may know, there is a growing wildfire raging in Santa Barbara, CA called the Gap Fire. In a single day it went from consuming 2500 acres to over 6000. More and more people are being evacuated from their homes in the Goleta / Cathedral Oaks area. This was mostly shot from a ridge on the San Marcos Pass. The audio is from a live FM feed of local radio station KTYD FM featuring my friend Julie Ramos.

After 11 days and 4 trips across the United States, I’m back home in Santa Barbara for an extended period of time. Beyond missing Kim, Emma, and Mia – it just feels really good to be back in my own home.

This past week I was in Washington DC doing some work for an organization called the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Meso, as I’ve learned that it is called, is a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Before this week I pictured lots of 70 year-old men that worked in factories getting this disease. I’ve since learned that millions and millions and millions of homes and thousands of schools in the US and hundreds of products we use in our everyday lives contain asbestos. In fact, I learned because my childhood elementary school was built on a landfill containing asbestos that I could be at risk. Pretty scary stuff to say the least. Anyway, I just wanted you to know how I spent my week and the extraordinary people I met that showed me what true courage is.

This week I’m gearing up for a trip back to Boston to visit my family. With the Celtics looking like they’ll clinch the title this evening, it’s a great time to be going back to the hometown. I am not looking forward to leaving Emma and Kim. We had such a great weekend with me celebrating my first Father’s Day, and now the last thing I want to do is be away from them for five days.

In other news, I was saddened and stunned by the death of Tim Russert. He was one of a handful of journalists that had a real impact on me. I can’t believe we’re going to go through this election season without him.

For the last five weeks we’ve had a full house. My sister-in-law, Sarah, and my niece and nephew Sadie and Elijah have been living with us. Sarah came to help out with Emma as Kim went back to work. they live in Dallas/Fort Worth, so California was quite a new experience for the kids. Tomorrow they leave and even though it will be nice to get back to “normal,” we sure are going to miss them. It’s been truly special having them here.
