The AHA's new Homeschooling Resources page at Facebook is available even if you don't have a Facebook account, and it features links to some truly wonderful free resources like this week's Learn to Read at Starfall, Steve Spangler's hands-on science experiments library, a great collection of kid's games, music, coloring pages, and other activities presented by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Multiplying Magic Squares, the Classic Toy Museum, Little Golden Books, How Stuff Works 4 Kids, and inspiring quotes on children and learning and homeschooling. HEM Questions

HEM Questions is a new YahooGroups discussion group and forum which addresses questions and answers about homeschooling, as presented in every issue of Home Education Magazine, in the Questions and Answers column, edited by Laura Weldon. The format presents two questions for each issue of the magazine, and readers and other interested homeschoolers offer answers, advice, ideas and solutions to the problem.

The current questions, presented for the upcoming May/June issue of HEM:

"I'm a left-brainer with a grad degree in hard science who finds herself raising two highly artistic kids. I've learned to be patient with the mess of spontaneous projects (sort of patient) but I have no good ideas for teaching the arts as they get older. Their ages are 6 and 8. Ideas welcome." B. Wasserman

"I am completely at wit's end with my son (10). He doesn't write anything readable and throws a fit when I make him rewrite his work. He argues with me all the time and has gotten more immature than his younger brother. What can I do to turn this problem around?" -Meg, Portland ME

Current answers must be posted at the HEM Questions forum before the deadline of March 10th. Please note that answers may be edited for space, clarity, and other considerations, but the HEM editors will not change the meaning or the intent of your answers. If you have questions for a future issue, you may post or email them to the online forum, or send them via email to the HEM Questions and Answers editor, Laura Weldon, at ReaderResponse@homeedmag.com

Homeschooling Goes Mainstream?

While not news to homeschoolers, and not even accurate in his assessment of where the homeschool movement originated and grew, not to mention that he doesn't even spell the term properly, this article by Milton Gaither in the respected journal Education Next will doubtless bring renewed interest from intellectual types and the news media.

"...over the last decade families of all kinds have embraced the practice for widely varying reasons: no longer is home schooling exclusive to Christian fundamentalism and the countercultural Left. Along with growing acceptance of home schooling nationally has come increasing diversification of who home schools and of what home schooling actually means."

HEM: The Change Has Already Occurred

Since 1995 the primary support for the American Homeschool Association has come from the nation's premier homeschool publication, Home Education Magazine. Founded in 1983 by homeschooling parents Mark and Helen Hegener, HEM has been a respected pioneer in providing news and information, resources and support, and much, much more for homeschooling families.

Their website tagline, "More than just a magazine..." hints at the incredible array of services, resources, networks, newsletters, forums, discussion lists, political advocacy and more, all provided free of charge for over 25 years. Support the magazine which has supported homeschooling - and the AHA - longer than any other.

The American Homeschool Association has been serving homeschooling families with advocacy, support, networking and more since 1995. The AHA promotes an approach to homeschooling in line with the earliest advocates of home education, John Holt and Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore. Current AHA services include an email discussion list and an online forum which provides news, information, networking and resources for homeschooling families, support group volunteers, and other advocates of homeschooling.
