Minnesota researchers are trying to figure out the source of a greyish-brown foam forming on top of manure pits that's causing hog farms in the Midwest to unexpectedly explode

Scientists are still struggling to figure out the root cause of the phenomenon, but think it could be linked to a new species of bacteria that forms in the manure pits. The team is currently focusing on ways to curb the foam's growth.

Now, if they could just figure out how to run cars off of the little methane makers they would be rich.

I'm sitting here scanning articles about disasters, just as I have done for the past two years, and have come to realize that the more you know about them the less of a threat they become. Call it disaster immersion, and the best example of this comes from storm chasers who went from only filming tornadoes from a distance to driving their cars all around them and into some of the smaller ones.

Now I know a lot of people are going to say that they are foolish, but no one can deny the good that has come from them.

This same type of confidence can be obtained by all of us a we learn more about our natural environment, which is why some people make a big deal about inches of snow while others have no problem dealing with feet of snow.

What about you; Is there a certain type of event that some would consider a disaster, but you have no trouble dealing with?

Dirty, tired, sick, smelly, little ole me

I just started a little plumbing project yesterday; you know the kind that only takes a few hours. Did I mention that I stared it yesterday, I am not finish, and that I also got sick last night.

Now I'm sure your wondering where this is going, so I'm going to get right to the point, cause this boy is tired.

If you are a prepper and have not made a back up plan B, for when things go wrong with plan A, you might find yourself going to bed without a shower just like me; dirty, tired, sick, smelly, little ole me.

No longer to we have access to those nice clean toilets that we take for granted. No longer to we have that nice soft toilet paper, and no longer do we have the luxury to leave the problem of waste management to someone else.

If you do, and enough of your neighbors do, you are going to have a real health problem on your hands. A health problem that can sometimes be worse than the disaster its self.

So what are you going to do if your bathroom gets wiped out?

If you have planned for such an event, life goes on and you don't have to squat behind a tree; that is, if there is a tree left to squat behind.

Sanitation is the hygienic means of promoting health through prevention of human contact with the hazards of wastes. Hazards can be either physical, microbiological, biological or chemical agents of disease. Wastes that can cause health problems are human and animal feces, solid wastes, domestic wastewater (sewage, sullage, greywater), industrial wastes, and agricultural wastes.

An outhouse is a type of toilet in a small structure separate from the main building which does not have a flush and is not attached to a sewer.

In North American English, an outhouse (sometimes also called a backhouse or a privy) is a small enclosure around a pit that is used as a toilet.

Most outhouses have one or two holes. One well-built example had four large holes and one small hole, for a child.

An outhouse operates differently from a septic tank in that the pit is not normally filled with standing water. The solids act as a sponge to retain moisture but also are exposed to open air, allowing for insects and earthworms to feed on the wastes which would not be possible within a septic tank. Septic tanks also tend to contain only organisms that can survive anaerobic conditions, while the open outhouse pit can both aerobic and anaerobic organisms.

Eventually over a period of many years, the solid wastes form a growing pile will fill the pit. A new pit is dug somewhere nearby, and soil is used from the new pit to cover and cap off the old pit. Underground organisms such as earthworms continue decomposition of the old pit until the material is indistinguishable from other ground soils.

How To Build A Outhouse

So you want to build an outhouse? Well, here's how to do it.

Steps

Dig a hole. Make sure that it's at least 200 ft from all water supplies and steams, lakes, etc.

Build a floor. Put planks over the hole so you have something to stand on.

Build the sides. Use 2 x 4 lumber and cover it with plywood panels to make a fast, easy structure.

Build the roof. Put plywood on top, and cover it with rool roofing. If the slope is over 2 in 12, you can use asphalt shingles. If it's over 4 in 12, you can use metal panels over some 2 x 4s.

Decide if you want a sit or squat outhouse. If you want to sit, build a seat out of wood or get a commercial seat and just cut a hole in the wood. If you want to build a seat, you can make one out of 2 x 4 lumber and plywood.

If you want a squatty, just cut a hole in the floor.

You can also make a two-holer by cutting more holes in the floor or the seat.

Add extras, such as a hand sanitizer rack, windows, etc.

Tips

Don't make it too complicated if you are inexperienced.

I think all parents feel this dad's pain. It is time for parents to stop being so political correct. I love it when a kid says, "you should respect me and except the way I am." Are you kidding me! they should respect their parents and except the way they are. They can post grap like that when they are able to walk out the front door and survive on their own, but we all know too well that there are 30 year old kids living in their parents basements right now. We call them sheeple.

A survival cache is a container filled with food/water and supplies that is placed in a safe location protected from both accidental exposure and those aggressively searching for your preps (supplies).

A cache is used as a back up to your other supplies.

They are packed with items you believe you will need in a survival situation.

They can be made out of anything, but most people use PVC pipe.

Placing caches in you home or on your property

Caches can be placed in the ground or hidden in walls, furniture, or just about anywhere you can imagine. Just make sure you take into account your local hazards, like flooding, so that you pick an area that gives the cache a good chance of survival during an event.

Placing caches along a route

I cannot say where you can or cannot legally place a cache; you will have to make that decision.

You should place them at logical distances from each other, depending on how you plan to travel.

You should also place caches along different bug-out-routes so that you have multiple escape routes.

Remember where you place them

If you cannot remember where your cache is, you will not be able to benefit from it, so make good directions and include them in your disaster plan.

When making your directions, remember to take into account the possibility that landmarks may get destroyed during a disaster. Knowing how to use a compass and map is a must for every prepper.

Contents of a cache are similar to items found in any emergency preparedness kit.

This needs to change in order for us to be a self-reliant nation.

During a disaster you will need to rely on your stored food.

The number of days you need to prepare for depends on your environment. If you have land and live in the country, you can store less; but remember, crops can be damaged by the weather. If you live in the city, store more.

I like to watch old documentaries to see how accurate they were in predicting the outcome of things. Today I watched the 2007 doc "IOUSA" on Netflix.

I thought it was good and liked the penny chart near the beginning of the movie. It showed how our nation has handled debt from the beginning. As it turns out we have been managing debt for a long time now and only once, in 1836, has it ever been zero. Each time it went up, we woke up and brought it back down to a manageable level; today however, we have let it go on and on and on...

The Bush era did their damage; then the Obama era, made what bush did look like child's play. They said they could fix it, but it continues to climb and they give us the same old excuses as to why. Both parties need to stop with all the BS.

So what's one to do in November, 2012? I suggest you ask yourself if our current politicians have done what they said they would do; if they have not, we need to have them step aside.

Make your decision based on their actions and the facts; not slick commercials that tell half truths.

Ask yourself, did they make government bigger or smaller; because we cannot go bigger. Bigger will mean collapse and we will be added to the list of failed nations that ignored history and repeated the same mistakes over and over again.

We do not need to change the way our government works to get this done. We just need to say in one united voice - STOP! Stop spending and start saving; bring the debt down.

The people are ready and it's time for us to make sure our representatives do what they are told.

Remind them that they are not royalty, Remind them it's time to give up their dreams of being all powerful. Remind them that their dreams are not greater than their neighbor. Remind them that we are individuals with our own American dreams.

In the past people believed that land was something that could not be owned, it was to be respected and enjoyed by everyone, and yet they fought for it just as all humans have through time; now here we are, in the present, talking about owning the weather. Can you imagine the weather wars that will be fought if this ever becomes a true reality.

People have been trying to modify their weather for as long as there have been people. Native Americans used rain dances, farmers used cloud seeding and all of us control our own micro environments everyday with heating and air conditioners.

So what makes this different? One very important thing - Control. No one should have the ability to control weather at the expense or disapproval of their neighbor. We are already seeing the first effects of water wars that in part have been caused by mans control of rivers, so it is not hard to imagine a global war over such a powerful tool.

The 2009 documentary "Owning The Weather" talks about these issues and while I am sure you will not agree with all of it, you will ask yourself "What would I do if someone else had control of my weather? Would they have my best interest in mind or theirs?" I think we all know the answer to that.

Skysounds, skyquakes, earthquake booms and seneca booms are all terms that relate to unexplained sounds that no one can quite agree on, but are most likely being caused by a natural event.

Earthquake "booms" have been reported for a long time, and they tend to occur more in the Northeastern US and along the East Coast. Of course, most "booms" that people hear or experience are actually some type of cultural noise, such as some type of explosion, a large vehicle going by, or sometimes a sonic boom, but there have been many reports of "booms" that cannot be explained by man-made sources. No one knows for sure, but scientists speculate that these "booms" are probably small shallow earthquakes that are too small to be recorded, but large enough to be felt by people nearby.

The most recent documented earthquake sounds were from a swarm of small earthquakes that unnerved the city of Spokane, WA in 2001. Many of the Spokane quakes were definitely accompanied by "booming sounds". The quakes in Spokane were shallow, sometimes only a mile or two deep. This probably contributed to all the noise they made. Higher-frequency vibrations make the booming sound, and when quakes are deeper, those vibrations are gone by the time they reach the surface. Sometimes the quakes boom even when no vibration is felt.

There are accounts of "artillery"-like sounds that were said to have occurred before or during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 and during the Charleston Earthquake of august 31, 1886 it was reported that the first intimation of the disturbance was a strange sound or murmur. Others say that with the sound they felt trembling, and that both increased, at first steadily, but by perceptible stages, and then suddenly or by swift degrees, to the full roar and energy of the climax.

The term “Seneca guns” is just a name, not an explanation. It does not tell us anything about what causes these noises and shaking. The name originated in a short story that James Fennimore Cooper wrote during the 1800’s. The name refers to booms that have been heard on the shores of Lake Seneca and Lake Cayuga in New York State. The name has been applied to similar noises along the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Similar booms are called Barisol guns in coastal India. These phenomena have also occurred in three widely separated places around the world and that’s about all we know about the Seneca guns.

The Earth is a complex place and there is a lot about it that we don’t understand. Perhaps someday we will understand what causes Seneca guns, but right now we don’t understand what makes them. They do not seem to pose a threat to anyone, but a lot of people think they are warnings of bad things to come; if they are, they have been warning us for a long time now.

Everyone has a right to think what they want; as for me, whenever I see videos of strange clouds or sounds, I look back in time to see if it has happen before and it looks like thees sounds have. Can they be a warning of a future event? Maybe, but they don't bother me, because I am a prepper and have prepared by networking with a lot of great preppers here on the A.N.T.S network.

Are we overlooking the canary in a coal mine? Miners carried them into the tunnels with them to see if dangerous gases such as methane or carbon monoxide had leaked into the mine-shaft; if it had, the canary would die, giving the miners a chance to get out alive.

I say this because all around the world fish and birds have died in mass, the Arkansas fish and Bebe birds are just the latest example of that. So what is going on? We hear about a story, it fades, then we hear about another story and it fades, and so on and so on...

It might be time to figure out what's killing the canary, or we might not make it out of the mine.

Bug In Plan

If you are staying in place you should have all of your survival kits with you unless they were destroyed in the disaster. A survival kit is a package of basic tools and supplies prepared in advance as an aid to survival in an emergency.

Kits come in a variety of sizes:

● Survival kit: small, can be carried with you.

● Backpack (BOB), limited only by the weight you can carry.

● Vehicle Kit: survival /auto repair kit.

● Location kit: large, used at home or bug-out-location.

This is the most important part of your plan, it is the only part that you can be sure to have with you at all times.

You need to learn how all of the different types of disasters may effect you and find ways to protect yourself from them. After you have done that, the basic rules of survival are all the same.

3 minutes without air:

If you are able to get oxygen, you are good to go; if not, you have around three minutes to find some.

3 hours without shelter:

This depends on the weather, but I can assure you that shelter will be your next priority if you are out in any kind of precipitation or you are in extreme heat or cold.

3 days without water:

Try to go with out water for a day and you will know why this rule is so important.

3 weeks without food:

Same for food, you are going to need some.

A lot of people are concerned with what most people call FEMA Camps, a name that started being used with the introduction of bill H.R.645 - National Emergency Centers Establishment Act in 2009.

This bill never became law. It was proposed in a previous session of Congress and sense sessions of Congress only last two years, the proposed bill, which did not pass, was cleared from the books.

Members often reintroduce bills that did not come up for debate under a new number in the next session and it looks like it was reintroduce as S.3476 on 6/10/2010.

S.3476 also wants to direct the Secretary of Homeland Security to establish national emergency centers on military installations.

Mr. CASEY (for himself and Mr. SPECTER) introduced the bill; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on Armed Services and will also be cleared from the books if not passed.

The bill In general - If passed, would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to establish not fewer than 6 national emergency centers on closed military installations and parts of open installations if no closed ones were available.

The purpose of a national emergency center would be to use existing infrastructure--

(1) to provide temporary housing, medical, and humanitarian assistance to individuals and families dislocated due to an emergency or major disaster;

(2) to provide centralized locations for the purposes of training and ensuring the coordination of Federal, State, and local first responders; and

(3) to provide centralized locations to improve the coordination of preparedness, response, and recovery efforts of government, private, and not-for-profit entities and faith-based organizations.

Now, I do not know if it will pass, but if it does it might help out those who are not prepared (sheeple) for a disaster. I would not use them, I like taking care of myself and it does not look like they could force anyone to do so. If that changes, it would be in another bill which I hope no American would want passed.

So in closing, look at things for what they are and remember that there is always a bit of truth in every conspiracy theory. Keep up with the bills as they go through congress and read them. If you find something you don't like, let everyone know so that our reps can be notified of our position on it.

This year we will elect a president and we must ask ourselves, which one will protect our liberties. If we fail to do this we will have set a course toward tyranny. All other issues come in second. Do not vote for a person just because they agree with some of your concerns, but fail to protect your liberty.

Start watching full interviews of the candidates from all parties; including, town hall meetings and you tube videos. Go to their websites and then ask yourself, will they protect my liberty.

Stop watching the media sound bites and commercials, it is time to take it upon ourselves to get the facts.

A prepper is an individual or group that prepares or makes preparations in advance of, or prior to, any change in normal circumstances or lifestyle, so that they can continue to live without a significant reliance on other persons (i.e., being self-reliant), or without substantial assistance from outside resources (govt., etc.) in order to minimize the effects of that change on their current lifestyle.

Preppers are sometimes identified as modern-day survivalists or neo-survivalists, but are far from the stereotype of survivalists past. Prepping has also been dubbed as survivalism light. Many do not identify themselves as doomers or follow the 2012 phenomenon.

Prepping and survivalism is approached by its adherents in different ways, depending on their circumstances, their mindsets, and their particular concerns for the future. The following are some examples, although many survivalists fit into more than one category or orientation:

Safety Preparedness Oriented - Learns principles and techniques needed for surviving life-threatening situations that can occur anytime or anywhere. Makes preparations for such common calamities as structure fires, dog attacks, physical confrontations, snake bites, lightning strikes, car breakdowns, Third World travel problems, bear encounters, flash floods, home invasions and even train wrecks.

Wilderness Survival Emphasis - Stresses being able to stay alive for indefinite periods in life threatening wilderness scenarios. These can include: plane crashes, shipwrecks, being lost in the woods. Concerns are: thirst, hunger, climate, terrain, health, stress, fear. Prepares with: knowledge, training and practice. Survival kit often includes: water purifiers, shelter, fire starters, clothing, food, medical supplies, navigation and signaling gear.

Self-Defense Driven - Individuals concerned with surviving brief encounters of violent activity. Focus is on personal protection and its legal ramifications, danger awareness, Boyd's cycle (also known as the OODA cycle - observe, orient, decide and act), martial arts, self defense tactics and tools (both lethal and less-than-lethal).

Natural Disaster, Brief - People that live in tornado, hurricane, flood, wildfire, earthquake or heavy snowfall areas and want to be prepared for the inevitable. Investment in material for fortifying structures and tools for rebuilding and constructing temporary shelter, perhaps have a custom built shelter, food, water, medicine, and supplies, enough to get by until contact with the rest of the world resumes.

Natural Disaster, Years Long - Concerned about long term weather cycles of 2–10 years, unusually cold or warm periods, that have happened on and off for thousands of years, and have cause crop failures. Might stock several tons of food per family member and have a heavy duty greenhouse with canned non-hybrid seeds.

Natural Disaster, Indefinite/Multi-Generational - Possible scenarios include: severe global warming and the possible ensuing ice age, the greenhouse-effect-gone-wild, environmental degradation, warming/cooling of gulf stream waters, large meteor strike, shift in earth's axis or reversal of geo-magnetic filed.

Examples: Swine flu, E.Coli 0157, Botulism, Dengue Fever, Creutzfeldt-Jakob diease. SARS, Rabies, Hantavirus, Anthrax, Plague, Cholera, HIV, Ebola, Marburg virus, Lhasa virus, Sarin, and VX. Might own NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) full-face respirators, polyethylene coveralls, PVC boots, Nitrile gloves, plastic sheeting and duct tape.

Technological Mass Destruction Concerns - Concerned with unintended consequences of genetic manipulation, nano-technology, transgenic crops, psychological engineering, genome hybridized cloning, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, engineered organisms, self-replicating molecular robotic assemblers (“gray goo problem”).

Malthusian - Soaring increase in world's uncontrolled human population growth impacts available fresh water, food, health-care, environment, economics, consumerism, spread of diseases and just about every other facet of life. Projections indicate that world population of 6.6 billion may again double in fifty years. Some warn that this will result in a Malthusian population crash.

Monetary Disaster Investors - Believe the Federal Reserve system is fundamentally flawed. Newsletters suggest hard assets of gold and silver bullion or coins and in some cases other precious-metal oriented investments such as mining shares. They are preparing for paper money to become worthless through hyperinflation. As of late 2009 this is presently a very popular scenario.

Biblical Eschatologist - These individuals study End Times prophecy and believe the Saviour is going to return soon, and that the final battle with Satan on the Plains of Meggido might occur in their lifetime. Most believe that the rapture will follow a period of Tribulation, though a smaller number believe that the rapture is imminent and will precede the Tribulation. ("Pre-Trib rapture".) There is a very wide range of beliefs and attitudes in this group. They run the gamut from pacifist to armed camp, and from no food stockpiles (leaving their sustenance up to God's providence) to decades of food storage. A small subset are Messianic Jews, and an even smaller fringe subset follow a charismatic leader's interpretations of the Bible. The Branch Davidians are one such sect.

Peak Oil Doomers - The Doomers are convinced that Peak Oil is a genuine threat, and take appropriate measures, usually involving relocation to a Survival retreat region that is agriculturally self-sufficient.

Rawlesian - Followers of James Wesley Rawles, the author of survivalist fiction and non-fiction books. Adherents often prepare for multiple scenarios with fortified and well-equipped remote rural survival retreats. Most are politically conservative. Nearly all place an emphasis on both being well-armed as well as being ready to dispense charity in the event of a disaster. Most take a "deep larder" approach and store multiple years of food. They also emphasize practical self-sufficiency and homesteading skills.

Medical Crisis Oriented - Has very complete medical pack in house and in car. Donates blood and is active in the Red Cross. Has taken CERT, paramedic EMT, and CPR courses, knows vital signs, stockpiles medicines, etc. Concerned with vehicle accidents and emergencies involving injuries. Focus is on helping family, friends and community survive medical emergencies.

Aliens and Artificial Intelligence - A number of serious and semi-serious literature has emerged dealing with concepts such as how to survive and defend oneself from an alien invasion or artificial intelligence uprising.

It is sad to think that 8 out of 10 college students think the government should give them free tuition and healthcare, jobs, money for retirement, and just money in general; and that they should take it from the rich who must have a magical money tree that can provide all of this.

I wounder where they got the idea?

Maybe from the parents that gave them free tuition and healthcare, cars, cloths, credit cards, phones and just money in general without having to work for any of it.

The problem starts at home, lets hope the parents of today's kids, figure it out before it is to late.

This article claims we need more grasshoppers. The author says that the story in modern times should read different. He claims we should spend our way out of our current mess, we should have a bigger stimulus, we should be our brother’s keeper, expand the welfare state, increase entitlements... and I say he is wrong; because just as the fabled grasshopper sang his way to his own demise, the modern day grasshopper will spend his money and yours to his and our own demise.

The true difference in this modern day story would be that the grasshopper not only ruined his life, he ruined the life of the ants as well.

A snowbound ASU student was stranded for ten days in the snow, she had a cellphone, but the battery was dead. She would have known to have different methods for charging a phone, if she had read the A.N.T.S "Cell phone" page.

How to use a phone in a disaster:

Text instead of calling, it uses less power and bandwidth.

Set up some (ICE) In Case of Emergency contacts for use if you are unconscious.

Use your phone as a mobile library by downloading survival apps.

Use your phone as a flashlight.

Have different ways to charge your phone: You can use a dynamo radio to charge your phone. You can use your car to charge your phone or you can take your car charger and modify it to use AA or 9 volt batteries.

Use your standard cell phone to send emails by texting to the email address.

Use your phone to take insurance photos of damage.

Send text messages to social networks like twitter and facebook.

A.N.T.S is a survival network of individual preppers called (ants) working together to provide other members basic supplies during disasters. This is done by relaying supply pods to any member that needs them.
