WBGO Ticket Winners Love Jazz Play It's a Hardbop Life NEW YORK (AYS) FEBRUARY 4, 2011-- It's a Hardbop Life, the first play to feature an entire cast of jazz musicians, opened last night at the Producers Club in midtown Manhattan. The play, which depicts familiar characters in the fledgling jazz musician and the rich girlfriend- with tints of Lee Morgan- is geared to jazz savvy audiences and boasts a club-like late night Thursday evening schedule (10:30PM). The play was written by and stars former Duke Ellington Orchestra and Broadway's Five Guys Named Moe trombonist Gregory Charles Royal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Charles_Royal . Also starring is Marvel Comics' Spider Woman Jolynn Carpenter Joe Milligan, who won tickets to the performance from WBGO JAZZ 88.3FM raves that the play was "[an] absolutely fabulous show, great story line with a surprise ending, [and] a must see for jazz lovers". ABOUT THE PLAY The play originally debuted as a Special Event at the 2004 New York JVC Jazz Festival and was featured in Jazz Times Magazine (http://jazztimes.com/articles/26143-gregory-charles-royal-s-hardbop-life), but has undergone some revisions) The play was written by and stars former Duke Ellington Orchestra and Broadway's Five Guys Named Moe trombonist Gregory Charles Royal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Charles_Royal . Also starring is Marvel Comics' Spider Woman Jolynn Carpenter Royal, who actually lived with legendary drummer Art Blakey as a teen and was chronicled in the book Art Blakey Jazz Messenger (Leslie Gourse Shirmer Books, New York 2002) says his experience with Blakey was the inspiration behind the play. Set in 1964 New York, It's a Hardbop Life is tragedy about a jazz trombone player named Q. (Royal) and his wealthy girlfriend Julie's (Carpenter) struggle over his artistic ethics and her shallow desire for singing fame. This all happening on the day of Q.'s band Hardbop's debut performance at the Jazz Corner Nightclub. Royal, who performs live improvisation in the production says, "I am truly excited about this opportunity to merge musical performance and stage acting in a story with familiar overtones in the jazz community. I am also excited, as a Broadway musician, to perform something other than the stereotypical big band jazz in a theater production." Produced by American Youth Symphony, the production, which is interestingly, not appropriate for kids under 17, appears every Thursday evening at 10:30pm. Washington, DC (AYS) Saturday, December 12, 2009- Award winning director Kevin De Freitas, who has worked with Mariah Carey and Lionel Richie, will direct the music video of The Dreamer, sung by Season 4 Canadian Idol finalist Sarah Loverock.with AHM instrumental winners Bobby McManus and Joe Lindner. Written by AHM judge Gregory Charles Royal, the single is being initially released in Canada where it was certified Gold in November 2009. The song is available on iTunes worldwide here. This is an important accomplishment for the American Idol-like program for INSTRUMENTAL musicians produced by American Youth Symphony, whose purpose is to promote instrumental musical stars within the MTV-Hip Hop Generation. Washington, DC- Tuesday, October 21, 2008- America's Hot Musician announced today that Liesl Schoenberger is America's Hot Musician 2008. Liesl, 24, is a violinist from Cape Girardeau, Missouri and graduated from the University of Indiana School of Music this past May. The show also awarded individual instrumental winners: Bobby McManus, 21 - guitar, Detroit, MI; jMAN jR, 24- keyboards, Los Angeles, CA; and Joe Lindner, 30- one man band, Watertown, SD. The announcement had been delayed in recent weeks in part to ongoing negotiations between the show and a Canadian production company to produce season two, and by recent events surrounding judge Gregory Charles Royal and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin uncovered at a recent news conference at the National Press Club which was covered by ABC, NBC, CNN and the New York Times. America's Hot Musician aired its finals in July on Lifetime Real Women and featured as judges Duke Ellington Orchestra alum Gregory Charles Royal, National Symphony Orchestra Violinist Marissa Regni, and Ex-Kittie bassist Talena Atfield.
