Frank Sinatra's Palm Springs Home Tour TV Episode

While researching a few other things on the web, I ran across this California Gold/California Public Television episode that features a tour of Frank Sinatra's Palm Springs Desert compound. This video is from 2012, and shows the house as it was when the current owners purchased the home. If you want to see a glimpse of what Frank Sinatra's life away from the camera was like, then you may very well enjoy this episode.

If though, you are expecting to see tons of Mid-Century Modern interior design, there's not much to be seen here. Most of the interior design is late 70's to mid 80's. There are a number of good scenes that show very mcm style appropriate desert landscape design, a segment on his theator room, a good amount of photos, his train room, and the pool area.

One of the guest host is a long-time friend of Frank Sinatra's, Frank Randall, and he recounts a little of what it was like to be there in the late 70's and 80's. He also give a bit of insight about ole "Blue Eye's" as a friend and host.

A very cool bonus feature of this video, is the home video shot of the Palm Springs Parade as it would have been seen in the early 60's. That was very cool to see too.

Hey everybody! I hope that if you're coming back to amidstmod.com, you have been happy with the blog post that you have seen, and if this is your first time, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you. Either way, thanks for stopping by.

For many of you, this may seem a bit awkward. I mean, I have been in contact with many of you for some time and you have helped me thru artist block, answered my design questions, and chatted with me about various different topics. Still, since I've been gone (from the Mid-Century Modern community) for some time, I figure there are a number of people who have no clue of who I am. Well, hopefully, the first episode of Amidst Mod with Eric McGrew will give you some indication. I would like to ask forgiveness for the auto quality. I was having a few problems with my mic, and had to use the iphone mic for recording. That's never ideal!

Any who, this first episode sets up a series that I am sure will be a great time to be had by all. My hopes are that it will not only be fun for me, but be entertaining, informative, and inspiring for all of you, and your Mid-century Modern interest.

Are you wondering what we will cover on the show? I bet you are...! Well, honestly, it's gonna be a mixed bag. We'll cover some DIY Mid-Century design style stuff, designers from the Mid-Century period, Contemporary Mid-Century Inspired Designers, my views and thoughts on mcm design, and some general information on objects and products that I find of interest here and there.

It's kind of funny really. I just happened to marry into a family that has retro collectable interest. No kidding, I had never even brought up the topic with my wife before we got married. We of course talked about out interest in vintage stuff, but never really talked about how far it ran in her family. Well, over the years the interest that my wife's had in the Retro/vintage style has grown into a business for them. Me... yeah... not so much. Still, I do get to enjoy their finds. And that's exactly what I'm doing now. I'm enjoying this cool lamp, and sharing the experience with you. So, take a look-see. There are a number of other detail photos on the ebay page here.

This lamp is not in working condition. It has a dent at the top of both the inner shade and the red shade. There are scratches on the lamp as well. It can be used as either a wall lamp or table lamp. The lamp's height is 7".

Something New From Amidst Mod

Without saying what it is, I'd just like to give a heads up to all those blog viewers out there. Even though I've never lost my interest and love for Mid-Century/Retro/Vintage design, due to life, and trying to make a living in Chile S.A., I've not done the best job of keeping Amidstmod.com up to date with the awesome finds, artist, and galleries, that have made Amidstmod.com the place it is today. So, with that in mind, I am trying to do my best to push Amidstmod.com in a new and more interactive direction, while keeping the focus on what is the most important to all of us enthusiast. MCM design, art, and the preservation of it. So, please hang in there, and I promise to have some more info on how the project is going. I figured I'd try and give you folks some easy going, mindless Mid-Century Modern today. Now, I'm not so sure about the shoes. They seem just a bit to far out there to be original MCM. It's probable that none of what is featured in this video/commercial is real mid-century modern, but it is pleasant to look at anyway. They used colors well, picked good locations, added extra vintaged effects (not to much though), and selected a wardrobe that is definitely of MCM style. So, take a look, and I hope you enjoy the show.

Mid-Century Danish Modern, Why So Popular...

In complete honesty, I'm still learning about the Danish Modern Movement that took an unexpected leap in the early fifties. Yes, I know that Danish modern did exist as early as the 30's (from what I can find), but it really took the design world by storm in the 50's.

Seemingly, the design professionals had taken note as early as the mid 40's, but with all the war stuff still having it's effect, it wasn't until the late 40's that people really could take it to heart, as to just how different it really was.

As you probably know, Mid-Century Danish Modern furniture is one of the most popular styles of furniture for people to look for and try and get their hands on. In the past 10-15 years, it, along with most other forms of mcm furniture have become highly valued once again. Why so?

High Quality Materials
One reason is materials used at that time are of very high quality. As is the case of most vintage/antique furniture, even the "knock-offs" (copies of the original manufactures) designs were made of better quality materials than most furniture today. Therefore, even with the pieces being quite old now, in terms of furniture age, you can generally get a good and sturdy piece for a decent price and a little repair work.

Teak is possibly one of the most famous materials that were used in MCMDanish Modern furniture. It's traditionalism of being Danish, not to mention its strength, warmth, and beautiful tone made it a perfect material for ModernDanish furniture. Much of the materials used in American Mid-Century Modern Furniture were also used in MCM Danish Modern design as well. Woods such as Oak, Rosewood, and Walnut are also common to find. Even though many consider teak to be the more authentic or traditional material of Retro Danish Modern design.

Other materials were commonly used as well. As is the case, Mid-Century Modern furniture borrowed heavily from the design concepts of it's predecessor, Bauhaus. Even though much of what was designed and developed during the Bauhaus movement was a bit weightier in form (not all, but most), Mid-Century DanishModern definitely borrowed from it in various ways. One such way was the designer’s use of metals, acrylics, leathers, and plastics. Still, almost every one of the materials used were of a better quality than those produced today for the mass market.

Workmanship/Quality of Craftsmanship
Another reason that many people like the Mid-Century Danish Modern furniture is the quality of craftsmanship. Once again, the originals are of the best quality, but even the knock-offs of the time are generally worth their price. Quality of work in the late 40's- early 60's really meant something at that time. Therefore, it can be fairly easy to find a decently sturdy piece of furniture that can be used upon purchase or with the minimal of investment and work.

Reparation
As mentioned above, typically the workmanship and material quality of Mid-century Modern Danish furniture was of a high quality, especially in comparison with that of today. Therefore, reparations of Danish Modern furniture is considerably more feasible and allows one to not only use, but maintain, and even restore these pieces to an almost brand new appearance. This allows for the owner to have a unique piece that lasts for a long period of time, and typically is more affordable in the long run.

Styling
While all of what is mentioned above is true, you may be thinking... Those are not the reasons that I want to buy, or that I got into Mid-Century Danish Modern Furniture. I know that too. However, I think that the aforementioned factors are equally as important to mention as the styling, so people should can be educated.

Facts are... MCM Danish Modern Furniture is cool. It's sculpted, it's airy, and it's art that is truly functional. Due to its form and stance, DanishModern furniture tends to exude a more futuristic styling in the space that it's placed, but without it being harsh or creating a cold air in the ambient space. There are few notable design aspects to a "typically" Mid-Century Modern Danish piece, and we will investigate these in more detail in the following post.

Knowing Your Mid-Century Danish Modern.

Have you every looked at a piece and thought, "I really like this, but I'm just not sure what, or who's it is?" I'm sure you have.

Even though I've been semi studying MCM design for many years now, I still find that I lack a lot of knowledge when it comes to what piece belongs to what designer, or who a designer is. Another lesser thought of question is, what copy of said designers piece is the one that I'm looking at? Is it an authentically approved piece from one of the original manufactures? Or is it a cheap knockoff from the vast number of cheaper quality companies that where riding on the skirt tails of the popular designers. These questions do really deserve to be answered before you buy.

There are typically two reasons for wanting to know the designer/originality of any specific piece. One is: I want to know if the asking price is reasonable for the product I'm looking at. Unfortunately, the hay days of picking up unappreciated mcm treasures are close to gone. Even more unlikely, is that you will find any kind of stylized Danish mid-century furniture for a steal. In fact, you really need to watch out for your wallet. Many people today are sharks when it comes to Stylized Mid-Century Modern Furniture, and will try to over charge you for a decent, but not particularly special piece.

Second is: Quality. Ok, so as it goes for me personally, I'm not a big name dropper when it comes to furniture. I'm fairly shallow in the terms of furniture preferences (this only applies to my personality with furniture though). What I'm looking for in furniture are good looks and a quality build. Clearly the price matters, but only if the first two items are ticked off my list first. So, when I find a piece of furniture (Danish or not) I want to know that my money is going toward something of value. I need to know it's going to stand the test of time, and stand up to some use.

Really though, the only way to know if the piece that you are looking at is worth the price is by knowing who the designer was, but even more importantly, who the manufacturer is. Let me give you an example:

My wife's aunt, who is a big participant in an antiques mall in Georgia called Cobb Antique Mall, recently found a set of dining chairs. They're Breuer Cesca Chairs* and she wanted to know how to tell the originals from the knockoffs. So, I did a bit of research and found this link here. Thing being, depending on which manufacture made the chairs, you may be getting a well built quality seat, or you may be getting a cheaply made knockoff that's not going to last very long. Or, in fact, you may find on closer inspection that the piece has already started to come apart. Being quality or not has a direct effect on whether or not these chairs are going to be a good investment and TRULY BE VALUABLE.

You can say the same about Danish/Danish styled Mid-century furniture*. Some are authentic and some are knockoffs. So before you start whipping out that lettuce and throwing it at the sales person to make sure no one else gets that... "Got To Have Piece", pull out the smart phone a do a little research.

Here's a couple of sites to help you with that research. One is www.danish-modern.co.uk and the other is www.danish-lights.com. At www.danish-modern.co.uk, you will find a listing of designers and manufactures, years promoted/sold, and companies that sold these pieces.

At www.danish-lights.com you will find the same thing as www.danish-modern.co.uk, but for mid-century modern danish lighting*. Here the idea is that anyone can have a fairly quick reference guide to data on Danish modern furniture* and mid-century modern danish lighting* from the atomic era*, and still not loose that piece that just came in to the store, or was put up on the web for sale. Better yet though, is that you'll be able to make an educated decision as to whether or not the piece merits the price and if it will last for you and your family.

Personally, I'm not starting a museum. However, I do want to know that if I need to sell my furniture and accessories, I'll be able to recoup some of what I've invested, and I'm sure you are the same. More important than resale though, is just knowing that the piece that I've just shelled out hard earned cash for will be able to endure my families use for many years to come.

While the reference sites listed in this post are not an all encompassing, they will help you to identify many of the most common Danish Modern pieces, and some of the lesser know pieces as well.

Compact Cabins by Simple Living

If you follow my facebook, you may have noticed that I put up a post about the Compact Cabins* book mentioned in the title.

Purely, by chance, I happened to see it while I was walking thru Lowes and was fairly impressed by it. However, I had no idea how cool it really was, until my loving in-laws gave it to me as a gift. So, lets go over the book a bit.

Honestly, the first thing that drew my attention to the book was a combination of factors. These where, that the cover illustration was a tonal architectural rendering of a cabin, and the second was... that the book is about cabins. While we all know that there are many books on architecture and so on, Cabin building is one of the most iconicly Mid-Century genres of architecture there is. (This is a topic for another time.)

So, not expecting much... I figured the photo on the cover was to pull you in, and then the rest would be glossy photos of contemporary cabins that no one could afford. I picked up the book (in the store before owning it), and looked briefly over the contents. To my surprise I found a really solid retro inspired looking cabin book. While I can't count it as completely Mid-Century Modern in design, I can guarantee that the author of this book was keeping in mind the original mid-century cabin books.

What I found inside is a really interesting and well balanced book. It takes on some of the more traditional styled cabin looks and simplifies the completion and construction of them with more current innovations.

One way that the book brings in current innovations into these retro styled cabins is by taking into consideration prefab and ready made units in the construction process. Some of these concepts are: using travel trailer and camper shower/bathroom units, using shipping containers, and using pre-made kitchen units to facilitate construction of the compact interiors while cutting your cost and time for design and install way down.

While some concepts may be a bit to contemporary for those of you who are reading this post, do not fear. This book has those contemporary concepts separated from the more traditional designs. However, it is good to remember that one of the big motivations in the MCM world was pushing design to incorporate new engineering concepts.

Compact Cabins* also gives very solid advice on modular units, and how they can be designed to construct the perfect cabin for your needs. Included in the book are 62 cabin plans, a number of tips on how to source materials (in todays world), how to find out about the building codes that exist, and a number of space saving concepts.

I do think it is very important for anyone reading this to understand that the maximum size of the cabins covered in this book is 1000 sf. Therefore, if you are looking for a book that covers larger cabins, this is not the book for you. Still, this book is incredibly practical, and will make you rethink the building of a larger more expensive cabin for the practicality of one of the ones shown in this book.

In conclusion, I would say that the content of this book is more than just interesting. I would say that is super practical and very inspiring. Being that I'm somewhat of a Mid-Century book snob (not just any old book gets in my collection), any book that I suggest must fit a few important criteria.
   First- Any book to be displayed must fit in with my other mid-century books.
   Second- It must be practical and lend toward Mid-Century styled living.
   Third- It needs to be an easily understood book that is useful to anyone who may pick it up.
Compact Cabins* is all of the above without a doubt. While it isn't suitable for Mid-Century Purist, it will be a great and wonderful addition to the average Mid-Century enthusiast. In fact, just looking at this book has inspired me to reconsider the possibility of building a cabin. Who knows, it could happen...

OH...Oh...Oh... Mid-Century Modern Home Plans

Ok, so over the years I've seen all the cabin and ranch or vacation house plan's books out there. While they are all titled Mid-Century Modern home/house plans, it only takes a few seconds to see that they are only partly what they claim. In the end, buying them is more for collection than for need or a true fit. That though is no longer the case. Why? Let me show you.

I was just browsing my favorite mid-century modern book store on ebay*, Populuxe* books, and I happened to run across this awesome book.

IDEAS FOR PLANNING YOUR NEW HOME*

This Sunset Books offering from the early 60's is not the typical, so it would seem, book that they put out on, "mid-century modern", house plans. You know, the book I mentioned above, where there are two mid-century modern styled houses buried in amongst a ton of plain and simple homes of the mid-century period, that are the furthest thing from modern. No, this book, at least from what Populuxe has posted on the photos portion of the sale, shows a true potential for being able to fufill our desires of having one book full of mcm house plans.

Just to help you get an idea, check out the following photos.

If you think these are cool, go check out the other photos Populuxe* has up. You won't be disappointed. While there take a gander at the other books and toys they have up on auction. Who knows, they may just become your favorite Mid-Century Modern books store too.

A bit of Danish in Books

I thought: "While my time is short for posting, I would put together a simple, but image/informational filled post for you nice folks." Also, while I'm not turning Amidstmod.com into a danish modern only site, I am doing double duty, trying to get my facebook group Mid-Century Danish Modern up and going. My favorite online bookstore, Populuxe books, has just what I needed today for a bit of inspired staring. Today I looked up, in the search box, the topic Danish Modern. Below are some of the books and images that I came across. Hope you enjoy.

Mid-Century Danish Modern

In my searches for great facebook groups to share my interests with, I've found the following: Mid Century Modern, Mid Century Modern Chicago, Modernists, Midcentury Items Buy Sell or Trade, Mid Century Modern Design, Friends of Atomic Ranch, Mid Mod Muse, Retro Shopping, Space Age Bachelor Pad Music, and West German Pottery just to name a few. What I didn't find, was a group that focused on Mid-Century Danish Modern Design.

I spent some time looking for a group like this due to a post that I have written recently; Functional Art: Mid-Century Modern Danish Lamps. When I didn't find what I was looking for, I decided to start my own group. You got it, Mid-Century Danish Modern. What might you find, or what might you add to this group? Well, any Danish pieces that are Mid-Century Modern or pieces that fit the Mid-Century Modern Danish styling, including ones designed and made today. Lets talk about a few examples.

My recent post on Danish Mid-Century Modern Lamps: Functional Art: Mid-Century Modern Danish Lamps shows some good examples of lamps that are clearly Mid-Century Danish Modern. However, there are many pieces that are made today that follow that same train of thought, and design style. Sofas, beds, end/coffee tables, dressers, and lamps are all being crafted that scream Mid-Century Danish inspiration. Some of these pieces are from actual Danish designers. Some are not. Still, what really matters, is if the design fits. Not the age or origin.

Below, I'm going to show a few pieces that are original Mid-Century Danish modern pieces. Take a good look, and really study these pieces. With each piece, I'm going to add my own personal design observations and what draws me to each piece.

Here we have a beautiful example of Mid-Century Danish Modern Sofa Design. For me the first thing that catches my eye is the balance between sharp corners and soft rounded curves. I love the sweeping curve on the lower right and left corners, the back, and on the top of the side cushions. If left to themselves, these soft curves could overpower the look of this couch. However, the addition of the very thin lower structural line and the sharp corners create a strong and checked balance. Such a long sweeping curve on the back of the couch and the long radius soft curves on the lower corners with the super flat cushions have the potential of creating a monolithic shape for this sofa. However, in typical Danish design precision, this sofa has a wonderfully light and almost floating appearance due to the well designed, thin legs. By using such simple, but shaped legs, this piece now lives in the room. Floating instead of weighing the room down. Using the teal also helps with the visual weight so as not to create an overbearing appearance.

Revitalized Artistry has taken the effort to restore this piece so that we can enjoy it in it's almost brand new glory. How happy, and thankful we are to them for their incredible, and hard work.

This piece always catches my eye because of the great visual balance that it achives. Having a bone white base, with contrasted drawers and legs gives it a nice look that sits solid, but not to heavy. Using the white on the center drawer backing also accentuates the dimension used on the geometrical drawer accents. Allowing us to see the piece in a true 3d form.

Using softly rounded drawer pulls on each side, tie in the center piece and legs nicely, while braking up the sharp edged rectangle that makes up the outside case. Even the slightly sculpted legs are great. Placement and color of the legs lend to a blending in into the shadows and floor, yet still providing enough design to not distract from the overall aesthetic if and when in viewing range.

This piece is a bit difficult for me to find, or define, what attracts more of my attention. However, if I have to choose, I'd say that the legs are, by far, my favorite aspect of this piece. While I'm sure they hold this piece quite securely. I love how they look so laid back, fragile and jetset. This table just flows so well together. In fine Danish modern style, the tabletop has a beautifully "sharp", but extremely fluid reversed beveled edge. Giving a false perception of it being ultra thin, while providing a very sturdy and rigid table top. Then there's that floating table top that looks super futuristic. Creating a dimension that exists, but at the same time, almost doesn't. If the the dimensional top wasn't fantastic enough, they had to throw the traditionaly sculptured taper to the glass table supports, creating a sense of confusion. Making one wonder if this table should actually be used or not. Doubting if it's a piece of furniture or just a really nice sculpture in the shape of a table.

As you can see from the above, there is no shortage of pieces that fit into the Mid-Century Danish Modern group description for your choosing. If you have any information on pieces, or sites that give details on designers and technical aspects, share them too. Even though I made no mention of them earlier in this post, sculptures, accents, decor objects, architecture, and art are also all welcomed as well. Functional Art: Mid-Century Modern Danish Lamps

From the very first moment that I looked at a Danish modern lamp, I was in awe. That's been some 15 years or so ago now. In fact, this incredible appeal hit me before I even knew what Mid-Century Modern was. At the time, I just knew what I liked, and what drew me. Over the years, I've seen an extensive display online of incredibly designed mid-century lamps. In fact almost all of my preferred lamps are Danish modern. So, I thought it might be good to look at why these lamps are so captivating to me and so many others.

Texture
One of my favorite aspects of design, in any form, is the texture that is considered, developed, and then applied to each creative piece. Danish Modern lamps from the mid-century era have a large range of textures that are employed with elegance and grace. As with many lamps, the shades typically are textured. However, different from most other lamp styles, the shades themselves are primarily translucent. Not using a solid card or paper backing to reflect light up/down, and not trying to hide the light bulb completely. Allowing the light to pass, but not allowing for a clear affirmation of what lies inside creates a sense of dimension that can draw you in. Use of these textured materials in a screening capacity creates a high contrast effect on the textured materials use within the lamps design. Magnifying the already notable texture to an almost unreal proportion. By using meshes of different materials, loosely woven strongly textured fabrics, frosted glasses, fiberglass, or thinly molded ceramics, in the lamp design almost always helps give these textured lamps shades a very light visual aesthetic. Mixing a soft feel amongst the harder feeling materials such as woods and metals.

Uses of different woods, ceramics, metals, and glass, are another aspect of these lamps design that contribute to their textural appeal.

Visually Light
Danish Modern lamp shades are not the only aspect of the lamps that give them their light or airy visual look. Selection of the right kinds of materials also help in this effort to minimize their visual weight.

Wood, in it's varied options are probably the most evident of materials used in Danish Modern Lamps. Using hardwoods, such as the commonly thought of Teak, in the lamp construction is one way in which the lamps maintain there light and airy visual appeal. Such hardwoods allow for thin surfaces, sharp angle changes, load bearing at irregular angles, long sweeping curves, and hardware fastening without any major compromise to the structural integrity.

Choosing wood also allowed for very fluid and soft lines in the design of the lamps. Creating points, edges, and curves that fold and fade into various angles helping to keep the light visual appearance that makes these lamps a truly sculptured piece of home accessories.

Metals of different styles are also commonly found in the construction of these lamps. Being used in various facets. Metals are found from the finest details, such as custom made dowels, screw nuts, lamp shade banding, and light bulb stands, thru decorative ornaments, and right down to the structural aspects, such as legs that plant the lamp firmly on the ground and their vertical supports. Metal, needless to say, plays an integral part in the visual appearance of these inspiring lamps.

Use of metal is a very important aspect in the overall design of these lamps. Do to the use of metals in the various details and construction, these lamps can maintain strong but thin lines. Using metal also facilitates ease of color palette options, allowing for a more tailored and specific overall look.

String and wire are two more materials that allow these lamps to have a light, but sculptured appearance. While neither of these two materials are the norm, there are many examples of these beautiful lamps that have been designed with these materials as an integral part of the artistic pallet.

Wire and string are typically used to create a unique and custom shade, or to fill a spacial void for balance, these materials also lend to the visual appeal of these lamps.

Color, while not being the most prominent aspect of the these wonder lamps design, also plays a very important part of the overall effect that these incredible lamps have on the space they occupy. Use of highly contrasted tones on carefully selected pieces allows for these lamps to convey looks of being firmly planted, floating effortlessly, or look as though they are in motion. While the lamp shades may include the heaviest portion of the lamp, a white translucent shade made of glass or ceramic may appear to be light and effortlessly held in space by the much darker and visually heavy wooden base. When colors other than white or wood tones are chosen, they tend to be brighter and well contrasted. Most metals are coated with, or are of, specific metals types/colors that flow well visiually with the overall design. While sharp, strong toned metals, such as Stainless Steel or cold steel are used, Copper and Brass and Gold are generally preferred. Not only are these colors of these metals more subdued than standard cold steel or stainless, but they've always been more luxuries in look, and held in higher artistic value.

In the end though, I guess what makes me find these lamps truly great is that they are adequate for just about any setting or design style. Simplified Woodworking: 2 Tone Coat Rack Full Project

Over the years, I have read quite a number of books, magazines, and articles on woodworking. I've also watched a number of videos and shows too. From these, I have learned a lot about how to execute different tasks and techniques, as well as some principles of woodworking. However, something was missing from ever show or article I saw or read. What was it?

Alternatives:
Alternatives are what was missing. In what way? Well, while each show/article had photos and instructions, and while all were well written, they didn't teach people how to use simple tools to do the same job that the big professional tools do. These shows do often use simple tools in these projects. However, the focus was on the most efficient, precise, and easiest way to do the job. In wood working ease equals expensive, and therefore, is out of the range of many do it yourselfers.

Efficiency and ease are great, but only if the cost of tools and materials don't out weigh the need/function of the item being built. I've thought about, and calculated many times the cost versus need of the tools shown on these shows. In every case, I decided that, while I would love to have the table saw, bench planer, or drill press, I couldn't justify the cost. Once again, I don't have anything against these tools. There may come a day when I start to sell my works and I may just buy these for efficiency sake. For the time being though, I can build what I want, and need with simple tools. With a little creativity, a few extra hours, as well as some hard work, you can build just about anything with inexpensive hand tools.

That's why I'm starting Simplified Woodworking. The "simplified" doesn't refer to the projects that will be tackled, rather the tools and materials needed to tackle them. Since I'm no Pro, this will give me the chance to learn, help others, and make mistakes so that all of us can better our abilities.

One thing to keep in mind is that these projects are based on things I need for my own house. Even if you don't need these same items, you can use these projects to learn the techniques, and methods of wood working with simple hand tools. These methods are used in many of the woodworking projects that you will want to complete. Something I've learned about woodworking is that any project can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. Keep in mind, that many times, simple is just as good as complicated, or even better. Others times, you will need a more complex method to allow for strength, durability, and quality. In the world of woodworking there are very few variation in methods of joining, cutting, and finishing. Techniques of each of these procedures can vary greatly. Still, each one serves a very important purpose.

As the projects are completed, I will do my best to explain all the methods used to the best that time allows in the videos. Also, I will explain these same methods in a written post. My explanations will include: why I am doing what I am doing, and also, what else could have been done instead.

At the bottom of the list you will see all the videos Parts 1 thru 6 of the project: Simplified Woodworking: 2 Tone Coat Rack. It goes over the design and the materials. Above each video, you will find a description of what each video contains.

Here is the list of tools and materials you will need. You can download the drawing that I did in Illustrator. (see image above). Hope you enjoy the videos, and let me know what you think.

The materials use for this project are:
- Plywood piece 7"x30"x1/2" (1) Note: Any wood can be used as long as it is the dimensions listed
- Plywood piece 6-3/4"x29-3/4"x1/2" (1) Note: Any wood can be used as long as it is the dimensions listed
- Wood Glue, epoxy, or Liquid nails
- 1/2" Dowels, smooth or grooved (1 stick=3ft long) Note: Smooth dowels will have a more finish and polished appearance. You can also use aluminum or steel dowels with an epoxy
- Flax seed oil / Small can Note: Stains, polyurethanes, lacquers or varnishes can also be used if you choose to.)

Tools
- Circular Saw (Hand saw can be used)
- Hand Saw
- Drill (electric, manual, or cordless)
- 1/2" Drill bit / sharp
- Hammer (Wood, Rubber, or lightweight steel)
- Jigsaw (a Coping can also be used)
- Orbital Sander
- Sand Paper: 80, 100, 120
- Square
- Measuring tape
- pencil
-Application method for oils or coatings of choice. Consult your local hardware store for each product you may want to use.
- Safety gear: Safety glasses, ear plugs, and dust mask (suggested)

Before you watch video number one, please note the following information.

I just realized that I had not gone over the part of how to cut the wood to the 7 inch height that I am using. Well, my suggestion would be this.

First, go get the plywood. If you do not plan on making/building multiple pieces of furniture, then just buy the pre-cut stuff from Lowes or HomeDepot. I've found that generally speaking, Lowes has a better selection of plywood. Remember, I'm not talking about particle board (MDF), or Chip/Press board (OSB). I mean real plywood. Then go and read this link on how to make a straight edge for your circular saw. Measure down from the factory edge 7 inches on one of the corners of the 48 inch width, and then do the same on the other end. Using the straight edge again, cut the 24 inch by 48 inch board into a 7" ("=inches (just in case you didn't know)) by 30" board. Repeat until you have two boards of 7" x 30".

Now that you've thought about the sizing, it's time to think about the materials. There are a couple of easy options. Remember, there is nothing wrong with using pine plywood. Just remember that is scratches and dents fairly easy. That means that in less time your finished project could need to be repaired, or replaced. My personal preference of easily accessible plywood is Birch Plywood or Red Oak. These would be great on this project. Birch would work wonderfully as the natural back piece, and the Red Oak would look very nice as the designed 2nd layer piece. Please note that these two plywood's are my favorite, easily available plywood's, and ones that you can generally get from your local big box home improvement store. There are many more much attractive and different grained plywood's that are popular for wood working available also at any number of furniture quality lumber yards, or wood brokers.

You also can buy red oak in 2'x4' and 4'x8' plywood, just like the Birch. If you want a real 2 tone look that is 100% natural, buy one sheet of the Birch and one of the Red Oak. Using the Red Oak on top. However, if you want to save a little money, you can cut the 2'x4' Birch sheet into 2) 7"x30" pieces and stain one piece with a cherry, mahogany, ceder, or walnut stain. Just something to contrast the boards with.

If you choose to stain, just make sure you stain the top board after you cut the design out, and stain all the edges, and about an inch onto the back all around. This way it will be less noticeable that it was stained.

Please forgive the quality of these videos. This was my first tutorial, and the video equipment I was using was not the greatest. However, I've been told by many, that the project and information is very good. I'm working to improve my videos for the future.

Amidst Mod is about all things Mid-century Modern in design, and influence and as I go thru all my searches, I find that there are a number of independent design studios, individuals, and small designers that create truly mcm inspired pieces. So inspired in fact, that if you can get past the designers name, the fact that it's not a known design, and that they are not 50-70's year old, you might just like having them as accents in your retro/mid-century inspired home.

I dig thru a lot of sites looking to bring you all the best designs that I can find of the original Mid-Century Modern and the Mid-Century revival. This is no small feat, and I enjoy it immensely.

Today, I'm bringing you a grouping of items that I have found on Etsy.com. Each of these items are inspired by, but not from, that wonderful space age era known as Mid-Century Modern. So, forget the vintage/collection value, the name, and the year. Just sit back and enjoy the design. I mean, that's what drew us to Mid-century modern before we knew about the designers, and their names, right?

This one measures 48" long x 32" tall x 20" deep. It also comes in other colors of stain, so make sure you go by and check this pieces out.

These "Cats Cradle Coffee Table Bases" from Popcelona are a really nice piece to look at if you happen to find a great natural edge slab piece and want to use it as a table, but don't know a thing about wood working or leg making.

This Boomerang Coffee Table from Arboriform is a really nice piece that could really set a mid-century or retro interior in the right mood. Functiional Art: Mid-Century Clocks Part:1

If we sit down and really look at all the pieces in the house, what is the one thing that would make a our lives almost impossible to live without? A time telling devise. Many would reply:"I don't really use clocks anymore though. Now that I have my cell all the time." This may be true, but is it design worthy of your interior?

Like any other piece in the house, a poorly chosen clock can add to, fade into, or disturb the ambiance and feel of the interior of your room. Which ever room it may be. Cell phones and contemporary/modern electronic devises tend to create a undesired and an uncomfortable mix with the retro environment. While there is nothing wrong with having modern electronic devises that display the time on them, they tend to break up the fluidity and don't really add to the room. Rather, they distract.

We all know that we have computers, dvd players, tivo styled devises, and cell phones that are being hidden around our house so that our visitors think the purist thoughts of mid-century/retro-ism exist in our 15,000 sf (more or less) piece of the universe. Still, while the guests are there, you want them to be able to see what time it is. To accomplish this, you have a few options. One, is to have your cell always out laying around on the Heywood Wakefield end tables. Secondly, you could make sure the media cabinet door is open to view the dvd/tivo devise for the time. Or, third... you could enhance your interior design, ease the feeling of your guest while being in your house, and provide the the time by something artistic and beautiful to look at. A really functional piece of art.We call such devices... CLOCKS. Not just any clock though, will do.

Seeing as though many mid-century and retro enthusiast are into styles from a wide range of years, I thought that I would do a series over the next few weeks to help orientate people to clocks that might work for your interior.

Today, I thought I'd start with clocks that represent the 1940's time period. In the 40's modernism was starting to slowly, but surely gain ground in the homes of America and many other countries. At the same time though, this ground gaining was still a long and hard process. So, it's hard to find many "modern" clocks from the time period that would be like what most people think of as mid-century modern. However, that doesn't mean the clocks didn't have style, or that they won't fit into a retro modern themed interior. Let's take a look at some the 40's styled clocks that I have found^.

Early Design Resurfaces
Before the World War 2 ended, there where generally not many new accessories or designs being manufactured for the masses. Materials were short and, what did exist was going over to the War/Defense departments.

It wasn't until after WWII stopped that many of clocks and other house hold accessories started to be produced again, and even then many where made in short run order based on the materials available. Also, due to the "pause" in domestic convenience design, caused by the war, much of what was produced from 1944 to to 1948 (more or less) where the same designs that had been sold when the war began. These designs already existed and where the easiest product to produce, since the public was clamoring for nice stuff, and there was little time to design, engineer, and test new concepts. However, clock designs, along with everything else, started moving forward rapidly.

Simple Round Wall Clocks
Being as though people wanted new things, and that there was a shortage of new materials. Many products where really reduced to the bare necessities. This is, in part, one of the reasons modern design began to come into a fuller focus of the masses.

Art Deco, as a design genre, had been around for a while and it had been accessible to the elite only. Now, however, these designs of the elite where being boiled down to the barest of design. Stripping away the fluff and leaving the design in a simple and solidified design. Having some steel scrap and overages from different war product manufacturing plants that closed or changed focus after the war. Therefore, metal became a material commonly used in home product designs.

Round wall clocks are a good example of this design change and the, getting back to roots modern design. These pieces were generally made of all metal, or metal with a synthetic face backing. Some where with wood or paper face backing as well.

Simple Yet Detailed Clocks
While the simple round metal clock continued to be used until, well... today... With time it's simplicity gave way to greater design detail.

Even though desk clocks and the such had been around during the simple round clock stage, the more elaborate clocks started to pick up in sales as materials and household incomes began to flow more freely.

Still holding onto the Art Deco influence, most of the clock were encased in wood, had soft lines, and were somewhat weighty in their appearance. However, this gave way quickly to a more modern, liter look. One that mixed materials in a different way, while applying contrasting colors, and not just using woods for contrast.

The Future Came Crashing Through!

While all these other stylings where still developing, a few designers had the future, and therefore, a different modernity on their minds. One of these designers was George Nelson. His designs were much more futuristic. They created a since of movement, and lightheartedness in their being. Simply put, they were atomic in their design power.

George Nelson's and others designed clocks, amongst other things, would change the face of modernism for ever.

These clocks had a light, yet powerful presence. They made the whole room have fluidity to it, inspiring the since of time travel. Being made of metals, woods, glass, and plastics, they showed the newest advances in science, while not being harsh to their surroundings. Their conception was based on an optimist future, and their shape, on atomic energy and interstellar travel. These clocks really made an impact. One so strong, that these same designs today are carried as timeless for modern and traditional enthusiast alike as being good in design nature.

Above are just a few examples of the styles of modern clocks from the 40's. However, these are just the beginnings of the Mid-Century Functional Art that we know as clocks.

^I will use the term 40's styled clocks, because, some clocks may actually be from a different decade, but have the same styling that was popular in the 40's.

Jetset Accessory You Can't Live Without

Accessories, are in fact, accessories. Something that is not necessary to sustain life. Granted, they can make life easier, better, and more enjoyable. Even still, they are not a necessity of life.

Typically, I would stand by this rule very diligently, however, I found something on Etsy.com that is making me rethink the concept of this theory. I find that the piece below is so cool, that is demands to be you our homes. I'm seriously contemplating the purchase of this. I mean, it's a shaker, it's got retro styling, and it's made of plywood. So, judge for yourself, and let me know the coolness factor of this piece.

Plywood: More Mid-Century Than Most

While plywood is not exactly new, and...while plywood has been used in production setting of mass scale since around the early to mid 30's. It's only been since the mid (more or less) 40's that it took a full on production value and designer interest.

Plywood, was designed to be the magic wood you could say. It was to be lighter, stronger, more versatile, more economical, and longer lasting than standard wood. Uses for plywood, have been everything from building your house, making your furniture, all the way down to the toys for the kids, and from time to time, even to make tools. Families all over the states from the late 40's until the mid sixties were using and buying plywood products. Everyone could have their own outboard motor boat for a few hours, and just a couple of sheets of plywood. Plus, an outboard motor of course. Furniture could be made at home without having to find the right lumber stock. Your life could be yours for the making!

Still, today... it seems that plywood is recognized, but not respected like it deserves. This is a sore spot for me, because I find plywood to be the best and most attractive furniture material to use. I also find it to be the most Mid-Century of wood materials. It's relative explosion in popularity and the exploration of its use, in the Mid-Century era makes it that much more Mid-Century for me.

Overall speaking, I'm not saying that plywood is the only good material, or that all others should be done away with. However, personally, I find a much grater visual aesthetic in plywood crafted products than in standard board cut products.

It's for this reason that almost all my projects are made with plywood. While still respecting plank and board furniture, I almost always look at a piece and try to imagine how it would have looked in plywood.

Today, plywood is still heavily used in some industries. Many a cabinet maker uses plywood. Many door manufactures, and even some boat manufactures. Construction uses it too. Even some furniture designers are still using it. One thing I have noticed though, is a trend for plywood furniture of today, to look less refined. Not all mind you, but much of the furniture today that is made of plywood, is overly focused on being self locking, and collapsible. Where as in the mid-century era, plywood furniture was made to be relatively light, pliable, and strong. Even when products were created to be knock-down or collapsible, they retained a cleaner and more sophisticated styling. Plus, more importantly, plywood furniture was to be economical and have a fine furniture look and quality while being economical.

Plywood today, is not as affordable as it seems it once was. For instance, a good hardwood plywood is upwards of $50 as sheet. In the case of the bed that I made, I used 4 sheets. That's not including the tools, and the consumables of the trade. So, high quality plywood can be very expensive to use for making furniture.

Yet, with all of this, it still seems to me that plywood really brought the mid-century design motto's of designing for function, and using engineered material that can be multifaceted together. Even today there are hobbyist books on boat building, cabin/house building, lamp building, furniture building, toy making, and many others that are produced and sold to the public.

Also, there are many people creating some really nice mid-century modern styled pieces today, with this fascinating and iconic material.

Not all technology of the past is so bad. I mean, they got man to the moon right? Well, even with such advances of the 50's/60's as getting men to the moon, we can say that not all technology of the mid-century era was the most efficient. One such difference in efficiency can be clearly seen in the energy uses of mid-century appliances. Everything from the can opener to the refrigerator had a nasty habit of sucking the juice right out of your wallet, right thru your electric bill.

Today however, there a number of interesting options that one might want to look into. One such option is buying products from one of the modern brands that models themselves after vintage designs. Dualit is one such company. While their products are not 100% modeled after the vintage styling of the mid-century era, they do have tendencies to show the influence of early electrical appliances in their current designs. This mix allows for the design you would want in a mid-century/retro interior, but with the efficiency of modern electronic appliances.

Clearly, with any new (contemporary) product, you have to take into consideration the ideal they have in producing and selling a product. Much of the modern day product line offered is much less sturdy. Use of plastics instead of glass or metal is quite common, and this also effects not only the price, but the durability of said product.

Therefore, if you are looking for a contemporary appliance, with the flair of the vintage styling you like so much, this may just be the product for you. Dualit has a large product line including Toasters, mixers, blenders, juicers, coffee makers, coffee grinders, scales, electric ovens and friers. Some of the lines that Dualit offer are more on the commercial line. However, many of the smaller appliances are specifically designed for home use.

One instance of the residential designed appliance is their toaster line and hand mixer line. Both of these are very vintage in look. While the coffee makers/grinders, and the juicers have a retro influence in design, they clearly are less vintage in appearance than the mixers and toasters.

Mosaics: A Lost Mid-Century Styling?

Mosaic: A picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass.

From the first search I did for MCM furniture and design, oh... almost 10 years ago now, I still remember thinking about how cool this one particular amoeba table with mosaic was. While that table is long gone, my interest in mosaics still lives on. If our schedule ever cools down, we'd (my wife and I) like to do a couple of mosaic projects together. Still, I often wonder, what happened to this wonderful artistic aspect of the mid-century era gone by?

In all my research, I have yet to find mas production mid-century modern furniture that was tiled or that was finished in mosaic. I'm not saying that they don't exist. If they do, pleas lead me to them. I'd really like to learn more about this particular aspect of mid-centutry furniture.

Still, it seems that mosaics played a large character role in the art scene of the mid-century eras. Buildings held large mosaic murals on the outside, or in the lobby. Many parks had mosaics on the walkways or in the promenades, many pieces of furniture even carried mosaic tops or boarders, and even production mosaic wall art* was produced for the home or office.

These pieces weren't just pieces of ceramic or glass put together. They were real images a lot of the time. Whether it was an abstract design, a bull/bull fighter combo, still life of fruit/bottles, or a peacock, these pieces had character.

One thing that I can say for sure, is that mid-century design today has not forgotten completely about the mosaic tile trend. Many a refurb of a mid-century home is, and has, used tile mosaic in the shower or bathroom. Unfortunately, that's as far as it seems to go though.

So, what happened to the attraction of mosaics? Is it that tile is too expensive? Too hard to clean? To hard to creat? Lack of imagination? I really don't know. No matter what the reason, it's clear that mosaics are not nearly as popular for the mid-century styling as it once was.

In the effort of encouraging at least one person to take on a mid-century styled project, I'm adding photos below of some very cool mid-century/mid-century styled mosaics. Don't worry, I'm not leaving it all to you, I'm going to try and take on one too. I already have a mirror frame planed with my wife. So, go get some mosaic materials*, start designing, and get to making a new mid-century styled mosaic piece. Why leave all the creativity to the masters of the past? Just remember, they would have never become masters without starting as novice.

It's impressive to me how that Charles and Ray Eames could work out molding processes of plywood so early on. Especially, when we consider the complexity of the designs that they had engineered. Today, those complexities are much more automated than they where back in the beginning, but the making of an Eames Lounge is no less impressive. Precision is of maximum importance. From the cut of the frame to the depth of the buttons on the upholstery, every thing is measure and precise.

Making A TV Worth Watching

A few short days ago, I posted a topic "TV: Back When It Was Worth Watching". In said post, it was mentioned that the progress of the electronics seemed to have a reverse affect on the exterior design. So, what we end up with is something of a backward world. Beautiful on the outside, and dull on the inside, or beautiful on the inside and dull on the outside.

With this topic in mind, I've done a bit of sniffing around on the net, and I have found the following articles to try and balance the weights between the 2 worlds. One of the articles is a DIY and the other is a reference to a TV tech that might offer the option your looking for. If not, he may at least have the information you need to get what you want out of your old TV.

Other than converting your old Mid-century refrigerator TV into a fish tank or a dog bed/house, I found very few Retro TV Conversion DIY's. However, I did find this one. Teknynja.com has posted a two part post on the retrofitting of his MCM Cabinet TV. Teknynja's first post "Vintage TV Mod, Part I" and their second post "Vintage TV Mod, Part II" are where you will find the DIY retrofitting process. Only thing is, as of recent, the second post doesn't have working photos on the post. At least, not for me. So, that is a bit of a bummer. There are holes where knobs should be and a few other details, that You will see. It does, however, look like a decent tutorial on the actual conversion process of the TV into modern technology. Therefore, with a little extra work, you could have the retrofit done and finish out the cabinet a bit more.

Thru my searching, I also found this post, "Fair Lawn man retrofits vintage televisions with modern technology" about a man in New Jersey who has a TV Repair and retrofitting store/operation. He is said to convert mid-century TV's into modern technology beings. This article states that he has limitations as far as what he can retrofit, but that anyone can call and request a quote or ask about the set they have, are looking at getting, or would like to get. So, if you're in the market for a vintage TV and want to look at having the internals modernized, you might find this place worth the call. It seems that they may actually have some TV's already retrofitted for sale as well. However, this article is a bit old, and I have not called. So, I will leave it up to you folks to let me know how this turns out.

Please understand that I have not tried either of these options. I have not tried calling the TV store, nor the DIY Retro TV conversion.

Foureyes, Sevin Salomone And Mid-Century Plywood

If you stay around Amidst Mod long enough, you find out quickly, that my FAVORITE material in the world is plywood. I'm not going to go into why in this post, but I can say without a doubt, that to me plywood furniture and design is the epitome of mid-century modern. So I'm constantly looking for new and refreshing plywood designers who share an interest in plywood working.

I don't just rely on them though. Many days are spent drawing, calculating, and designing my own styles of art/furniture, that I hope to one day create and share with all of you.

Some times however, I find a designer, or company that has a cool and unique focus on the essence of mid-century styled designs and also appreciates plywood. When that happens, I have to bring them too you. So here we go.

Sevin Salomone with Foureyes Furniture has a style that has completely enthralled me, and I think you'll know why once you seen his furniture. This is the Courthouse in Douglasville Georgia. While this town doesn't have much in the way of Mid-century modern architecture, they do seem to respect and appreciate what they have as part of their history.

I was very happy to see such a small town take an interest in a very cool MCM building, and use it for a community cultural center and museum. However, you can't expect to much from a small southern town. I looked in the windows, and the whole building (other than lobby) had a country decor interior. Doesn't really fit, but... hey, at least the building is safe for now. That's something.

Danish Mid-Century Modern Or Modern Danish?

In the most specific form of the term, Mid-century modern^, we are trapped into a period of around 30-40 years to choose from. Not only does it limit us in products based on a time frame, it also limits us because mass production of products were fewer in quantity than they are today. Therefore limiting access to these wonderful products and pieces.

Without a doubt, there are many designers from many countries that participated in the development of the mid-century modern style in it's heyday. One extremely famous sector of the world was Denmark. Danish modern^, considered by how much the designers were talked about, or the public's purchasing trends, proved that the Danish designers had a niche that others tried to follow.

While having success in architecture and interior design, most came to know of their furniture and home accessories and that's what would catch the eyes of the Jetset infatuated world. Everything from Danish lounge chairs* to the silverware* on the table*, from the candelabra* to the magazine rack*, from the lights* to the rugs*. All of it, had to contend with the Danes, and the Danes were ruling.

Danish design awareness, to those in the states, really picked up in the 50's and the 60's, even though Danish modern designers had subscribed to modern design even before this period. During these two specific decades though, it became common to see original Danish designer furniture, art, and accents, and kitchenware in the houses of those who could afford it. And those who could not afford it? Well, they bought likenesses, or reproductions. Clinging to the ever desirable design style, just not quite getting the originality or quality.

What's happened with Danish design today? That really is the question. As I had briefly mentioned in an earlier post. A friend of ours who lives in BonAire, which is a Danish territory, entered my house, looked at a few pieces of my furniture, and said...: You like Danish furniture, don't you? I asked why he thought so? He told me that my credenza looked like the current furniture the Danish furniture stores are selling, and that all the houses are furnished with this kind of furniture. So, I had to check it out. Well, it seems he's right.

While Modern Danish (today's Danish Modern) is progressive. It still has a feel that, in mixed company of MCM Danish modern, would likely go unnoticed. That's not to say that all Modern Danish would fit into the 50's and 60's Mid-century design period. In fact, some of what is coming from current designers, better fits the late 60's and early 70's design styling that was popular.

Even so, the Danish Mid-century design DNA has been passed down. To help illustrate this, I've put together a bit of a comparison below.

As you can see, whether it's Mid-Century Danish modern, or Modern Danish, it's really all just mid-century in style and design principal.
