US fuel pipeline 'paid hackers $5m in ransom'

A major US fuel pipeline has reportedly paid cyber-criminal gang DarkSide nearly $5m (£3.6m) in ransom, following a cyber-attack.

Colonial Pipeline suffered a ransomware cyber-attack over the weekend and took its service down for five days, causing supplies to tighten across the US.

CNN, the New York Times, Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal all reported a ransom was paid, citing sources.

Colonial said on Thursday that it would not comment on the issue.

On Friday, Japanese consumer tech giant Toshiba said its European division in France had been hit by the same cyber-criminal gang.

US tech giant Amazon is to go on a hiring spree in the UK as online shopping continues to boom in the pandemic.

Amazon is to hire 10,000 UK employees as it opens more warehouses in the north and south of England.

It is also creating a number of corporate roles in Cambridge, Edinburgh, London and Manchester.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said the move was "a huge vote of confidence in the British economy".

The coronavirus pandemic has accelerated a trend towards online shopping, and tech giants such as Amazon have reaped the benefits.

Now the firm, which has come under criticism over working conditions and over the amount of tax it pays, is further entrenching its position in the UK.

IBM says chip shortage could last two years

The boss of the US tech giant IBM has said a computer chip shortage could last another two years.

Its President Jim Whitehurst told the BBC it could be "a few years" before the situation improves.

Many firms have seen production delayed because of a lack of semiconductors, triggered by the pandemic.

The shortage has been exacerbated by surging demand for TVs, phones and gaming consoles while consumers are stuck at home.

Mr Whitehurst said on BBC World Business News: "There's just a big lag between from when a technology is developed and when [a fabrication plant] goes into construction and when chips come out".

"So frankly, we are looking at couple of years… before we get enough incremental capacity online to alleviate all aspects of the chip shortage."

'Huge shortage' in digital skills says Apprentice winner

Cyber attack 'most significant on Irish state'

A cyber attack on Irish health service computer systems is "possibly the most significant cybercrime attack on the Irish state", a minister has said.

Speaking on broadcaster RTÉ, Ossian Smyth said the attack "goes right to the core of the [health] system".

However, he also said that it was "not espionage".

The health service has temporarily shut down its IT system to protect it after the attack.

Mr Smyth, who is minister for public procurement and eGovernment, said it was an international attack.

He added: "These are cyber criminal gangs, looking for money.

"What they're attempting to do is to encrypt and lock away our data, and then to try to ransom it back to us for money."

Reminders on rise as WhatsApp update deadline looms

All day, she can hear the roar of Israeli fighter jets flying overhead, along with the sound of explosions of missiles and aerial bombardments. "Everything is shaking around us," she says. "And we are shaking too because we are so afraid."

She is one of many residents in Israel and Gaza who have been gripped by fear, as Palestinian militants and Israeli forces continue to exchange fire, and street violence among Jewish and Israeli Arab mobs has erupted in many Israeli towns. At least 83 people have now been killed in Gaza and seven in Israel.

The BBC has spoken to two mothers - one Palestinian, one Jewish Israeli - who have been caught up in the worst fighting the region has experienced in years.
